A vital resource for teachers and students.......2007-05-29
Many Russian textbooks are heavy-handed with grammar, and far too light on vocabulary. This is an excellent suppliment to any Russian course, or better yet, a way to improve your own wordpower in the Russian language. By building on common roots, wordpower is expanded rapidly, and the ability to understand words by identifying roots, just like is done in whatever your native language is, dramatically helps the learner to go from simple sentences to actual discourse.
I highly recommend this book to any student of Russian, from novice to master. You can never speak a language too well!
A must-have for serious students of Russian.......2004-12-23
I first heard about this book from my college Russian teacher, who gave it a strong endorsement as a must-have for all serious students of Russian. I couldn't agree more. This book provides Russian language roots alphabetically and lists around 3-10, sometimes even more words that are derived from that particular root. Memorization of the root leads to a rapid expansion of vocabulary derived from that root, cutting the amount of time spent memorizing vocabulary down significantly. It also allows you to figure out words with great accuracy if you're reading a text and stumble across an unfamiliar word. I strongly reccomend this book for all those who seek to learn to speak Russian fluently for any reason, as well as linguists who will be studying Russian and other Slavic languages.
An Excellent WordbuildingTool!.......2001-02-04
This book of 450 different roots of the Russian language is the ultimate tool and guide to learning not only how to build your own words in conversation and in writing, but also (and I feel most importantly) in determining how to deconstruct words you pick up in reading and listening to better grasp their meaning.
Patrick could easily have stopped at simply providing the roots, as well as words built from those roots, but he also gives you sentences with the words in them as examples. Last but not least, he provides a handful of exercises for practice at the end of the book.
This book should be on the top shelf of every translator and/or student of the Russian language.
A great way to learn basic Russian vocabulary........2000-10-28
More than any other language I know, Russian is built upon roots. This book does a good job of presenting the most important roots of the Russian language, usually listing five or more different words formed from each root. Each new word is used in a sample phrase with English translation. The introduction discusses suffixes and prefixes (including prepositions that are used as prefixes). And, importantly for beginning students, all the Russian text is shown with accents!

This book gives you a good first overview, but you absolutely have to get a book on your state's regulations as well, especially if you live in a highly regulated state like Massachusetts. This book for example only gives you a vague idea on how to handle the security deposit, but Massachusetts state law is very specific and not following the rules precisely may cost you the deposit plus penalties.

Worth getting for the forms on cd-rom.......2006-11-03
I find the forms included with the book on cd-rom to be very useful (they are included as both PDF and RTF files--you can edit the RTF files in any word processor.
However, the book itself is mostly 'duh', and what it does say it repeats. The book could easily have been 100 pages shorter. Almost all of what the book says can be found in more concise form in a good book on landlording (such as Leigh Robinson's book 'Landlording'). Also, the legal issues of finding tenants and not discriminating are better addressed in Nolo's "Every Landlord's Legal Guide".
So while this book is worth getting for the forms, it offers little information in the book itself that is not better said elsewhere.

This book not only describes detailed info about valid tax write-offs, but also has an insight into how to think as a Landlord. As a first-time Landlord, the book put into perspective why a repair can sometimes be better than a replacement and why. Lots of really good info if you don't want to pay for an expensive accountant! Highly recommended!

THis book gives you very detailed info and also gives you an examples after each topic so that you can understand how you can apply the info into your real life. I am a law student at Yale Law School and my husband is an attorney. We own and I manage about 5 rental properties. This book is absolutely essential for anyone owning a rental property. Do not depend on your accountant as a substitute as most accountants will not know this kind of detailed information about real estate rentals (unless they specialize in it or maybe have their own rentals.) My accountant who has been in practice over 20 years did not know a lot of essential stuff which I had to guide him through(it may be time for a new accountant). If I had not read this book I would have been doomed. Because I can qualify for the unlimited deduction (not just $25,000) for rental losses, we have literally saved tens of thousands of dollars in taxes we would have otherwise had to pay on my husband's salary, legally, with the guidance of this book. I cannot recommend this book highly enough. It is written in a very easy to understand format and gives you almost all the information you need in one place. You cannot rely on others to properly arrange your financial affairs in this specialized area. By reading this book you will know how to buy, finance, and repair properties in ways that produce the most effective tax benefits. Consider yourself lucky that you are aware this book is out there and purchase immediately if you own rentals.

Anyone paying rent, and any public library catering to renters, needs Attorney Janet Portman and Marcia Stewart's 5th updated edition of EVERY TENANT'S LEGAL GUIDE: it is the only book to provide legal details for handling not just landlords, but roommates and other tenants. From getting drug dealers out of the building to handling asbestos, getting a landlord to make repairs, and putting a roommate situation on a solid legal foundation, EVERY TENANT'S LEGAL GUIDE is an essential reference which should be part of any general public lending library collection.

Until you read this book, you will be taken advantage of from landlords who know you haven't read the book. I have rented for years and thought if I am a good tenant and pay my rent everything will be wonderful...UNTIL that day!!! By reading this book, I learned there were many times as a renter my rights were violated. I am an excellent tenant with more knowledge. By knowing my rights I have been able to keep situations from getting to the UGLY stage between the tenant and landlord.

As a beginner starting out in the rental business, this book was the most helpful that i have found. It is very thorough, but incredibly well organized and easy to use. The forms section and included CD ROM really give you everything you need to get started. Of course you will want to alter them a bit and make them more suitable for your specific situation, but doing so is quick and easy. A friend of mine who has been in the landlording business for quite a while actually rushed out and bought a copy of his own after viewing mine. Truly a great book!
