good for beginners, maybe.......2007-09-03
This is a very basic Japanese-English dictionary that should be avoided by any intermediate-or-better learners. There are dicitonaries out there which have so many more words in them that this one is just kind of superfluous. Its simplicity may make it useful for beginning language students, but people who have been at it for a while should avoid it.

Awesome resource.......2007-08-26
I'm trying to teach myself Japanese, and this book has been a great companion. It conatains almost everyword I ever needed to look up. This won't teach you much about grammar, but it makes a great suppliment.
The dictionary is completely in roomaji, so it requires no knowledge of kana or kanji. It does have the Japanese script for the word listed after it, though.
I got my copy from a second hand book store, and it fell apart at the spine after a few month, which is the danger of a thick-spined book. I have no idea how old the actual copy was, though, or how roughly its previous owners had treated it.
Good enough reference work for home or travel.......2007-07-27
Nakao Seigo-san's waei/eiwa, or Japanese-English/English Japanese dictionary, is a nice-sized quality paperback with enough entries, more than a pocket-sized edition, but nothing ultimate like the legendary Green Giant by Kenkyusha.
The English-Japanese entries have the translations in romaji (written in Latin alphabet) as well as the kana and where appropriate, kanji translations. They also cover homophones, such as bridge (for crossing) and the card game.
However, for those not versed in Japanese, the guide preceding the Japanese-English section is imperative reading, as it covers basic grammatical nuances and rules in Japanese. Regarding words borrowed from English, for example, one might observe how most Japanese words end in a vowel sound, hence Christmas is pronounced "kurisumasu," plastic is pronounced "purasuchikku." Then there are the copular nouns, or "keiyoudoushi" that accompany some adjectives. For example, "an elderly person" would be "toshiyori no hito." "Toshiyori" is elderly, "hito" is "person," which makes the copular noun "no."
There are also some verbs whose infinitives include "suru," which is kind of like "do." For example, "emancipate" is "kaihou suru." Others don't, like "to reside," which is "sumu."
I wore out my copy of this during my 72 day trip to Japan, and boy did it come in handy. This time, for my upcoming stay in Japan, I will treat my new copy much better.
I can't recommend this one.......2007-07-01
As a student of Japanese, I've consistently found this dictionary lacking. Translating from Japanese to English, I often find that it's missing important words that I need. Translating from English to Japanese, more than once I've had my teacher tell me that the word this dictionary listed isn't the one that's usually used. Perhaps it's a difference in dialect, but considering that my teacher is from Tokyo, I have to wonder!
I'm writing this review because I've given up on this dictionary and am hunting for a better one. This book is okay for simple words, but beyond that, I've found I just can't trust it. Save your money.
SO Glad I Bought This Book!.......2007-04-11
I recently had SIX people from Japan visiting me for 10 days. They ranged in age from 7 to age 77. I speak no Japanese and they speak no English. With the constant help of this book, we had a fantastic time together. This book was particularly helpful because it translated English into Japanese written in letters and also written in symbols.

Excellent Pocket Dictionary, Don't leave home without it!.......2005-12-23
This is an excellent Japanese-English/English-Japanese dictionary that I used religiously while living in Japan for a few years. In fact, I never left home without it, always carrying it in my purse.
I had another Japanese pocket dictionary, but did not like it because 1) there was no kanji but only romaji, and 2) I found some definitions to be incorrect while conversing with natives. I wanted to buy another dictionary that was more useful and wanted to upgrade, so I bought this one.
This one is great for it's small size. I agree that the plastic cover makes it excellent to carry while protecting it. I even put note papers in the inside pockets to take notes and aid in my learning. Kanji translations are included, making it especially useful for advanced users or while traveling. Has over 20,000 entries, so most words that I needed to look up were often found in this pocket dictionary.
If you are looking for a useful pocket dictionary, I highly recommend this one. Hardly a day went by where I didn't refer to this dictionary.
Kanji + lightweight + inexpensive.......2003-09-27
When shopping for my first Japanese-English dictionary I was amazed that many give only romanji and/or are extremely expensive. This dictionary gives romanji along with kanji and/or katakana and/or hiragana for all entries. Both romanizations and Japanese entries are printed in very readable fonts (Japanese nano-fonts can be very problematic for kanji neophytes...). The book is also very light and so can be carried along easily whereover you go. Being a beginner, I cannot really make any comments as to its accuracy, but I have found this dictionary very helpful in my learning process. It is certainly nice to be able to see immediately what the kanji/katakana are for a word. This feature allows for both learning and review in a dictionary that is small, user-friendly and reasonably priced.
Subarashii; adj. Wonderful, Superb.......2003-04-20
I took this compact (4"x6") dictionary with me everywhere outside my home while living in rural Japan for two years. The plastic cover ensures its durability, and the inside cover can double as a gallery for my students' print club stickers or a file for business cards. Such portability really helped me to learn the language by having instant access to the right word at the right time. Most people were very patient, even delighted, when I used this during our conversation. Sometimes, it was the topic of conversation. In addition to it's size and sufficient word pool, each English or romanized entry also includes the Japanese written form (kana or kanji), which other dictionaries often neglect. The kana or kanji is beneficial for studying, figuring out which bathroom to enter, or, in the event that you can't pronounce the word correctly, showing the entry to someone. Translations are also concise. After a couple years of daily use, however, it might be time to get a new copy. I recommend this dictionary to anyone traveling to Japan.

Book Description
This is the first book entirely devoted to analyzing the "bullwhip effect". It examines in depth all the problems associated with the bullwhip effect, its consequences, and known tools to design well-suited supply chain management systems that can cope with it. International supply chains are a central topic in this book and analytical tools that permit handling the Bullwhip Effect for global supply chains are of primary importance. The book compares the various approaches for dealing with the increased variability that is at the heart of the Bullwhip Effect, all illustrated by real case studies.
Book Description
Did you ever look at the person with the bullwhip on the movie screen and think, "Hmmm, I wonder if I could do that?" Or maybe you are one of the people in the circus audience looking at the man or woman cracking the whip, not at the lion. If either of these scenarios describes you, then you are the kind of person for whom The New Bullwhip Book was written. The book introduces you to whip basics, parts of the whip, the different types available, as well as the three basic cracks, and step-by-step instructions on how to master those cracks.
Book Description
In the mid-thirities, the Federal Writer's Project, an adjunct of the W.P.A., dispatched interviewers to capture the personal memories of the last few thousand survivors of American slavery. In Bullwhip Days, they tell, in their own voices, of the harsh realities of human bondage. The vivid and powerful images are a vital part of America's history and offer sobering insight into the roots of racism in today's society.

A Definitive Book.......2007-09-24
"Bullwhip Days - The Slaves Remember, An Oral History" is essential reading for anyone interested in the history of slavery in America. It is edited by James Mellon. But with respect to Mr. Mellon, it is not his story.
During the Great Depression, the US government created work programs for a besieged economy. One of these was the Writer's Project of the Works Progress Administration (WPA). Someone realized that the last generation of African Americans who had been slaves was dying. Writers were dispatched to interview these ex-slaves and record/write their stories.
This work is a selection of transcripts from these vital historical records.
It is suspected some of the slaves may have moderated their comments to appease the interviewers sensibilities. I really doubt that. Having read a number of personal memoirs of people in their later years, I find their candor amazing. Just because an ex-slave speaks fondly of their former owner does not mean they are lying or have skewed perceptions.
There's no definitive slave experience. We have the account of one woman owned by the Vice President of the Confederacy, Alexander Stephens on a plantation operating entirely by slaves (including the overseers). Another woman agrees to be bred only because her `kind' master had agreed to buy her in addition to her parents.
One elderly couple had diametrically opposite experiences. She had an idyllic family existence with gifts and new clothes for Christmas. He was separately from his parents as a child, starved and beaten. Decades later, he hears of a child abused like himself. Despite being elderly, he and his wife take the boy and raise him as their own.
There is one major theme through the interviews. How a slave was treated was entirely a function of their owner. They had no rights, no recourse to the law. If caught without a pass, you were fair game for the infamous "paddyrollers" (patrollers). Even after freedom, the Ku Klux Klan terrorized the fomer slave population.
Another thing that I found interesting was the mortality rate after slavery. In multiple interviews, these old people were alone with no children or grandchildren surviving. A lifetime of slavery did not equip them well for freedom.
This is the first book I would recommend to anyone interested in the subject.
The Bad, The Sad, And The Extremely Ugly.......2006-06-12
This is the real deal. Ex-slaves telling their own experiences; a few not-so-bad, many extremely heartbreaking. This is one of the best insights into what slavery was really like during the 19th Century. This is the story, in there own words, of how a people were totally dehumanized during America's most shameful period. A country claiming "liberty and justice for all" while denying that freedom to millions of fellow human beings. And many still ask the question, "why do African-Americans still lag behind in so many areas, while other ethnic groups had to struggle as immigrants also?" This book is a reminder that blacks were forcibly brought here, and denied-for-years even the simplest education. Maybe the reading of this book, will help some realize the continual uphill struggle, blacks have tried to achieve in a few short decades since the Civil Rights Movement. Trying to make-up for Centuries of bondage, and inequality. Just as we can never forget the evils of the Holocaust, so it should be equaly true with the era of slavery.
The Slaves Own Words.......2006-02-01
I have used this book as part of my Black history classes for 5 years now. It would be impossible to make up the stories that actually happened to a people held against their will and it is riveting to read about the memories and nightmares. This book gives a name to slaves, personalizes it and makes the suffering immortal. These recollections, though they belonged to individuals, makes the suffering universal. The experience of one is the experience of all. But yet, these people on occasion find some humor in various memories and you can share there collective joy over 150 years later. I highly recommend this book to anyone, not just students and historians.
"The Real Deal".......2005-10-19
I first read this book back in 1991. Even today, I will occasionally reread it. It is very informative and very much real. I can truly say that I love this book and this is a must have. You will truly enjoy it. My people have come a long way.
Powerful & Moving.......2005-02-08
Wow...That's all I can say. This is a wonderful book and a must read for everyone. I read this as part of a book club discussion for Black History Month. What a way to open my eyes to a part of American history. Very moving.

A word from the author.......2004-10-12
I'm afraid my publisher let this book go out of print without warning me, so I no longer have copies to sell. However, a couple of vendors still have copies in stock at a reasonable price. Try www.murphywhips.com or www.westernstageprops.com if you want to buy a copy. Thanks for your interest in my book.
Andrew Conway
A one of a kind book covering many aspects of bullwhip use........2003-11-17
I wish The Bullwhip Book had been available when I started playing around with bullwhips. It would have helped me to find a whip, learn some throws (preventing some mistakes), and care for the whip (Don't use neatsfoot oil). But, as it is, I can still learn from this book. So far it has caused me to modifiy my grip and try new variations of cracks. Mr. Conway starts the book with the process of choosing a whip, discussing the parts, types of whips and the materials used to make them. He then goes on to basics such as pre-use care and the physics of the whip (a whip breaks the sound barrier when it cracks). Other chapters include: keeping safe--i.e. protective gear and the hazards of practicing in public (watch out for people and dogs). "Three Basic Cracks" is a chapter covering basic throws and it's very helpful that Mr. Conway describes how to recognize common mistakes and offers some corrections. Next is variations on the basic cracks, including some of my favorites: the overhand and the backhand cracks. Also covered is the use of targets (be careful in target selection as hitting anything can damage your whip), doing wraps (of yourself and an assistant), tricks and stunts (like the multi-crack Queensland Flash), and throwing and catching the whip. The book has a good description of how to care for your whip and ends with a little history and a list of other resources the reader can investigate. If I had to make a suggestion to improve this book it would be to make the illustrations multi-part--showing each crack in at least four stages: setup, mid throw, crack, and follow through. I enjoyed this book as it is the only book available that brings together information on many whip topics that you would otherwise have to pull together piecemeal from a wide range of sources. I think at any skill level you can either learn something from this book or at least come away with an idea or two. If you are interested in bullwhips, buy and read The Bullwhip Book.
Not really about sexuality.......2003-09-16
In twelve chapters Conway covers a lot of information about bullwhips and how to handle them. The multi-ethnic and gendered drawings add a lot to the descriptions. Nothing here about BDSM however, it doesn't tell you how to use a whip on a human being even though it is published by Greenery Press. Also, I don't think that just a book can make one compentant in using a bullwhip -- luckily that is never Conway's claim. So if you want the basics for bullwhips for fun, sex, or profit, this is a good introduction.
The Bull $#!t Book.......2003-08-19
The explanations for many of the cracks are useless and the illustrations are just awful. The overall design of this book is amateurish and even encourages BDSM which I am strongly against. The perverts have given whip cracking a bad name and will not support them. I'd have given this book a second star if it had been made out of toilet paper because then I, at least, could have use it for something.
Won't teach you how to do impact play.......2002-11-22
This book is great if you want to simply learn to crack a single tail whip and some basic wraps for show only. However if you want to learn how to use a single tail whip for impact play this book gives you no information on that subject.

Remember your youth.......2004-07-22
Bullwhip is the second book of a trilogy by author Rubio. I recommend you read the first, Neophyte, and then Bullwhip. This book continues to take many twists and turns as a young man gets his education from a number of real life sources. It is fast reading, sometimes shocking, and for many of us will bring back many thoughts of our youth and the crazy things that happened during that period. As with the Neophyte, Rubio uses an advanced vocabulary and words which are very descriptive at telling the story. It is an interesting book in that it can appeal to all ages from 16 and up. Since it has some racy parts, it is not for the very young. Grab it, read it and hold on!
