Excellent Pronunciation Guide.......2007-05-23

The text and CDs work quite well as a pronunciation guide. However, they are not intended as a teaching guide for learning French. They should be used only as a refresher for those who have a basic knowledge of French or as a supplement to other teaching materials.

Not the best.......2006-08-19

I bought this book as I need French spelled out phonetically. This book, however, just proved to be an exercise in frustration. For instance, on page 71 they cover the 'our' sound as in amour and jour and say it is pronounced as in the English word poor. This is accurate if you are pronouncing poor with a French accent. On page 5 it says to pronounce the vowel in le and me as in the English word again. I heard no similarity between the two sounds. I found no problems except with the comparison to English, but that is a huge problem. I'm getting rid of this book and trying a Berlitz. But for all you other language guides out there, with French in particular, add phonetic spelling, please.

Good but flawed.......2006-08-14

I agree with the reviewer who found it irritating that each word is presented in isolation, rather than making comparisons. For instance, what is the difference in pronunciation between faire and fer?

Another irritation is the fact that an English speaker introduces overall sections (this is good), BUT that for the most part, we listen to native French speakers, some with strong accents, speak English as well as French. For instance, the francophones are the folks telling us how to hold our tongues to pronounce "r" or "l." Why not have the English speaker do ALL of the English, and let the francophones do the French?

I debated giving this a 3, but the sounds covered and the extent of coverage of each vowel make it worth a 4. It is also valuable that the CDs run through the pronunciation of groups of vowels, such as "eil" (soleil).

i wouldn't have learned french on my own without this book/cd package. very much helpful for those who want to self-study french. invaluable supplement to self-study french textbooks.

I'm giving Pronounce it Perfectly five stars even though I have some reservations about it. The way this book works is to present all of the sounds of French one after the other. Each sound is presented in isolation, based on spelling. It could even be considered to be a catalog of sounds. That makes this book a good reference work. You can look up a spelling in the (very good) index and jump straight to the sound.

I'm not sure, though, how good that approach is for learning the sounds in the first place. For example, I had problems with the various "e" sounds of French. I would have appreciated it if there had been a section that presented these sounds together with each other for the sake of contrast. Considered in isolation, I had trouble relating these similar-sounding sounds (to my anglophone ears) to each other.

I did not find the descriptions of how to produce the sounds (i.e. how to hold the mouth and position the tongue) very useful either. There are diagrams, but the differences in the drawings between them are too subtle to be illuminating. (And at least one of them, the side views for [e] and [ɛ], appears to be wrong.) But thankfully the book uses the International Phonetic Alphabet, and I found that looking up the names of the sounds (e.g. "close-mid front unrounded vowel" for [e]) on Wikipedia to be a better starting point for learning how to produce them.

In summary, this book presents all the crucial information one needs--most importantly it contains the recordings of the sounds--but it doesn't present them as well as it might have. But if the reader is willing to do some work, then this book can be very valuable indeed.

Great New Series.......2005-07-05

EMERGENCY DEEP is the start of a new series (at least that's what I understand) as such it is a very interesting start.

Let's start out with the positives:

1) Michael Dimercurio is the best submarine writer (apologies to my friend Joe Buff) today.
2) He draws on his experience at the Naval Academy and his service in the submarine force.
3) I liked how he established his characters Dillinger and Vornado. Having known a few other guys to come out of Anapolis, I wonder how much of the Whitehead story is made up. Again the level of detail could only come from some familiar with life as a midshipman.

The only real weakness in this book is the CIA. They just aren't that bright or ruthless. We might like to think differently, but current events suggests otherwise.

I liked what he did with the Alfa at the end of the book, but the Agency subterfuge was pretty obvious.

Of course, I read Michael Dimercurio books for the underwater action and these are second to none.

As this was the last book of my summer vacation, I was greatly entertained.

When reading other peoples reviews people have either said this book is great or terrible so i thought i should say what i thought of the book. First the good, this book offers two excellent sub battles that are just as good as anything others have offered, and the characters are farely well done don't expect ground breaking characters but they aren't just names and faces either. Now onto the bad, first of the plot has a major whole in it the size of an elephant but only people really into realism will spot it, the writer really goes deep into the inner workings of machines that while i was able to keep up with others might get lost in, so there it is what i feal is the best and worst of this book.

This book kept my attention from beginning to the end. The plot twist in the middle was unexpected and made a good book even better. I loved it-if you're into military suspense novels, specifically those dealing with the Navy, buy this book!

I got given this piece of garbage by a buddy who now seriously owes me a beer to make up for it. I read it on a flight to LA and it put me to sleep. Hack crap. Forget it.

Learning to Trust.......2006-12-28

Anne is a former EMT who's now a candidate to be a nurse. She's relocated to Deep Haven, MN to escape the gang violence she experienced first hand in Minneapolis. Anne is hoping to settle down and start a new quiet life in the town. However she keeps running into Noah Standing Bear, who is trying to start up a summer camp for troubled teens from the city. The two have many disputes and arguments as they both try to struggle with their former lives from the past. Also someone is stealing drugs from the hospital and attacking nurses. Fear from those who can help enters the little town.

I enjoyed returning to Deep Haven again. I wish I could visit this quiet town to go away to relax. I definitely make a stop at the bookstore for a read and cup of coffee. The characters in the town are all friendly and for the most part everyone gets along. However, at first Anne's treatment of Noah gets really annoying. She blames him for everything wrong that happens to her and there's a lot of prejudice in her accusations. I understand that because of her attack she's very wary of people and not able to trust easily. However you feel for Noah that he can't do anything right in Anne's eyes. He doesn't even have to be near her and she gets into a rage about him. She's prejudiced towards him because of what her attacker had done to her. I did like the story overall. Gang violence is a topic that is a big issue in major cities. It's sad that many teens and even children are affected by gangs. Many families are torn apart because of killings and it's almost normal to hear that a friend has been shot or hurt by a gang member. It's a good eye opener that we should help people in those situations instead of ignoring them. I also liked the use of a minority character, sadly it's still rare in Christian fiction to find a main character that is not Caucasian. This book was an interesting look into what happens when you have to fully trust God even when you're scared to.

A darker subject that enlightens the heart..........2006-06-08

This book was harder for me to get into. The horror of being attacked and trying to rebuild...faith in God, faith in Humanity, faith in yourself. It's a tough subject to tackle and while we watched the heroine heal it also helped me to heal.

Having lived in gang territory in Minneapolis for 10 years, I appreciated the research put into this book. Having lived through a brutal attack, I appreciated the insight, the love, the healing brought to my soul and my mind just from reading this book.

Kudos for tackling a darker subject and making it shine. To some, books are just words, for others they become a LIFEline.

This was a very dispointing book. For an author that claims to be religious with a missionary calling, this book was a poorly written text with a trashy theme and negative images.

I would not recommend this and will think twice about any other of her books.

Obviously this book is to be considered fiction however, the author took great liberties at the expense of a real community. By depicting a pristine, healthy, progressive community as a gang haven, poverty stricken and AIDS infested. The author's attempts to tell a story are lost in the blatant, stereotypical, racial stereotyping... No educated person should waste their time reading this story. This writing falls well below any standard for christian writing.

this book saves the student from the hype and promo that the PADI books now have, and is actually a very good basic text for open water. Jeppesen, the original publisher, publishes all the texts that airplane pilots use and carry in those black bags, called 'jep kits'.

An issue with this integration is the effect of low-frequency shipboard vibrations on the optical cavity mirrors. Alignment of the cavity mirrors is required for the proper operation of any type of laser. Mirror alignment is especially critical for an FEL because the electron beam and optical mode must substantially overlap. Laboratory FEL facilities, along with other laboratory high energy facilities that employ active mirror alignment systems, are investigated. In addition, a model theory for controlling the vibrations of a single-degree-of-freedom system is developed, and experiments with a simple mirror alignment system are described. Reduction of an impressed vibration amplitude by a factor of five is achieved, compared to a factor of fifteen that is achieved in major laboratory systems with sophisticated control systems. The purpose of these efforts is to understand the underlying physics of vibration control. The knowledge forms a basis for follow-on research towards the development of a prototype shipboard active mirror alignment system.

This is an excellent text for all persons involved in the field management of diving injuries. A clear and concise format. It not only provides the "basic" treatments but also the "advanced" treatments for dive emergencies. This will be the required textbook for my "Advanced Diver Medical Technician" program I teach in Roatan, Honduras. The publisher indicated to me that a second edition would be out in the Spring of 2000, where is it? This is a "must have" book in your diving medicine library.

This thesis presents the first study of Pulse Width, Pulse Frequency (PWPF) modulated thruster control using the method of command input shaping. Input shaping systems with linear actuators has been successfully developed to reduce modal vibrations. Recently this method has been extended to systems with on-off actuators to some degree. However, exist approaches require complicated nonlinear optimization and result in bang-bang control action. Bang thruster operation on flexible spacecraft is propellant-intensive and causes frequent thru switches. In this thesis, a new approach integrating command input shaping with PWPF-modulated thruster control is developed to minimize residual vibration in maneuvers and to reduce propel consumption. To realize this approach, an in-depth analysis of the PWPF modulator is first conducted to recommend parameter settings. Next, command input shapers are designed and integrated with PWPF modulator. Simulation verifies the efficacy of this technique in reducing modal vibration. Lastly, robustness analyses are performed and demonstrate the method's insensitivity to frequency damping uncertainty.

Author and EMT Ken Barnett shares with the reader his life-changing, deeply emotional experiences as a flight paramedic in this inspiring new autobiographical novel. Once the reader opens the books, they are drawn into the day by day life of an EMT. As one of the medical profession, Barnett shows what self-sacrifice truly is, as he and his team battle time and the elements to save as many lives as possible. During the 1990s, Barnett and his team formed the first and only helicopter rescue team in the Arkansas River Valley area, and began the awe-inspiring and courageous life of flight paramedics in an area where they previously weren't available, and the reader can not help but feel moved by the tales of rescue, survival, and hope presented withing the pages of this book. Barnett shows the human side of a profession that is often portrayed as being cold and uncaring. This book, in my opinion, should be required reading of anyone that may be seeking to pursue a medical career, as well as those of us who admire this highly trained group of professionals.

The abstract provided by the Pentagon follows: For a compressor disk, effective vibration suppression requires broadband control, and the elimination of inter-blade coupling forces. Previous researchers achieved this using an active/passive piezoelectric shunt network. Unfortunately, optimal tuning of the shunt requires prior knowledge of the coupling strength, which is not well defined. This thesis uses an adaptive parameter estimator to eliminate the inter-blade coupling forces. In addition, the passive shunt is replaced with an analogous positive position feedback method. The resulting control law was used on a simulated four and eight bladed system. While substantial reductions in system response were achieved for the Adaptive/PPF control technique, the parameter estimates did not always converge to the correct solution. Similar reductions in the response were achieved using PPF control by itself.
