4 out of 5 stars Good intermediate book.......2007-05-06

I've tried many other books and this one is fine for someone who has studied Chinese and needs a refresher, so someone who is beginning/intermediate. Other choices, which I think perhaps fair better, are the Integrated Chinese series.

5 out of 5 stars CD review for book 2.......2007-01-04

The CDs are a great complement to the book. The text is spoken at normal speed to be challenging, and then repeated more slowly.

    5 out of 5 stars jenessa.......2006-05-02

this is by far the best chinese text book i have encountered. i have been studying chinese in china for the past 2 years...so i have seen quite a few textbooks. my husband, who is fluent, has also been very impressed. each chapter is introduced first by a little story using the new vocabulary words and grammatical structures. then the book highlights gives many examples on the new grammactical structuring...all with great english explanations and enough examples to really understand how it works.

you don't even need to think twice about this one....go out and get it...you will be glad you did!!

    Product Description

The first volume of the long-awaited revised edition of the popular Practical Chinese Reader series are finally available! This completely new edition (it will encompass six volumes in 70 lessons when completed) takes the student from an absolute beginner to an intermediate level, approximately 3 years of higher-level classroom instruction. The text follows the story of Ding Libo (the son of Gubo and Ding Yun from the first edition) and other international students as they live in China, learning about Chinese culture and society as they learn contemporary Mandarin. Emphasizing the basic skills of reading, writing (simplified characters), speaking, and listening, with supplementary exercises, many illustrations, charts, and in a larger 8 x 11 format.

    Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Great intro to Mandarin.......2007-04-04

This is a well organized book that makes learning easy. The text is arranged with a dialogue at the start of each chapter and with the new words & verbs embedded in the dialogue. Each chapter builds progressively on the last and there is enough English to bridge the gap so you will not be completely lost.
One criticism is that the basic survival language / useful travel phrases take a while to show up and the book would be better organized if we were exposed to more of that sooner. But, otherwise this is a good learning tool. I have just returned from 2 weeks in China and the material in this book served as a good foundation.

4 out of 5 stars Good beginner book.......2006-03-12

Although I don't think this book technically qualifies as a reader. I think it is an excellent book for beginners. It starts with text and is followed by new words. It includes notes on the texts, a grammar section for each chapter, drills and exercises, and also a section on writing characters including the stroke order. This would be an excellent companion to students studying beginners chinese in college.

    5 out of 5 stars Great Resource........2006-03-10

I'm currently using this book for my Chinese 101 class in a community college. As a high school student, I was first scared to take a college class. However, this book have been really helpful to me. The text are easy to understand and not boring. Overall, it's a great book.

5 out of 5 stars The best Chinese textbook I've seen.......2006-02-13

I've been studying Chinese in China for five months now with this textbook, and I've loved it. I'm on the 19th chapter right now, and really enjoying it. The text is quite well-organized and the teaching method solid. The way I use this text is to first memorize the characters, then go through the dialgues with the audio (copying most of the characters as I go) and then going through the vocabulary lists once. Then I spend 4-6 hours with a tutor per lesson going through the exercises in the textbook, and have my tutor correct my workbook exercises. My chinese teachers and friends like the textbook and say that the content is authentic and high-quality (even though I live in Guangxi province, in Southern China, where people sometimes get annoyed if I use the Beijing dialect used in this book :) I haven't gotten the Teacher's manuals, as they're difficult to get a hold of in China, but you're better off studying with a tutor if it's at all possible. My only complaint is that more help could be given when learning the characters - many times I have to do research using a dictionary to learn what some of the components are, and what the meanings of individual characters are.

4 out of 5 stars Depends on how hard you're willing to work.......2006-01-31

I have mixed feelings for this book. Coming from a Chinese background (and having the ability to actually SPEAK Chinese fluently), the first six chapters were a breeze. It starts off with just some pinyin, so that's always there to guide. All of a sudden, chapter 7 takes away the guiding hand and puts you straight to characters! I didn't feel like I had a chance to absorb all the characters I had been expected to memorize in the first six chapters. I then decided to buy the workbook. Although the workbook isn't worth the price, it is helpful & I'd probably still buy it in hindsight. Unless you're in a class enviroment with supplementary work, the textbook alone won't be enough to help you with characters.

I should probably note that I'm going over the work myself as this is the textbook used at my uni and will be assumed knowledged for my Chinese class this coming semester. From my experience so far, using this book -- without classes & its weekly assignment -- a *lot* of discipline must be exercised & much hard work to progress through the chapters.

    5 out of 5 stars Hao ji le ! A Well-Planned Series.......2005-04-26

I have used the original Practical Chinese Reader series and found it very useful. I was so impressed with this new textbook and workbook. There are many improvements over the old series.
    1. The book is simply larger and easier to read.
    2. Chinese characters are intoduced and reinforced in a very effective way. The meaning of character parts is well-explained.
    3. Grammar and usage are much more clearly explained.
    4. The book uses homophones (some with the same tone, some different) to highlight the importance of proper tones.
    5. The workbooks and actvities are interesting and they have really helped me retain the material. The old series activities were too formulaic and boring.
    6. The lessons are longer (14 lessons in Book 1 versus 30 lessons in the old series). This gives you more time to actually use the material in different ways. I find it more effective.

I'll be finished with Book 2 in a few weeks and look forward to using all 6 books in the series.

Good luck with your Chinese study.

5 out of 5 stars This is the 3rd volume in the series.......2004-10-15

Based on the classic Chinese textbook Practical Chinese Reader, the New Practical Chinese Reader is finally here. In this complete revision of the old text (in fact, it is a completely new book, not a simple revision), the student will go through a total of six volumes, taking the student from the beginning level to the end of the intermediate level. Six books in all, the whole set is intended to cover three years of college-level instruction. The layout is excellent and the content is interesting; the first three volumes contains dialogues and expository text (volumes 4-6 is not yet released) that introduce the reader to aspects of Chinese culture and communication, and in keeping with the old Practical Chinese Reader, the grammatical explanations are excellent and clearly illustrate the usage of Chinese grammar. Furthermore, the new volume is written with the HSK guidelines in mind, so if you are planning to take this test, this is the textbook for you. Overall, this is probably the best textbook for English speakers to learn Chinese. Note: simplified characters are used; the grammar in the first three volumes corresponds more or less to the grammar covered in volumes 1-2 of the old Practical Chinese Reader, the vocabulary selection, however, is completely updated to cover usage of Chinese today.

    Book Description

Compiled under the sponsorship of the China National Office for Teaching Chinese as a Foreign Language (NOTCFL) and in consultation with the Chinese Proficiency Test (HSK) Guidelines, the New Practical Chinese Reader (NPCR) series is designed to help native English speakers easily learn Chinese. Based on the time-tested Practical Chinese Reader (PCR), the revised and updated NPCR combines the grammatical strengths of the old PCR with contemporary material and more emphasis on learning to use Chinese in everyday conversation.

NPCR consists of 70 lessons in six volumes, covering beginning to intermediate levels, for three years of instruction. Features include balanced training in speaking, pronounciation, grammar, and vocabulary; gradual increases in difficulty, and a cyclical approach to learning with constant review of language structures, functions, and cultural knowledge; an abundance of practice material suitable for students to use inside and outside the classroom; and a new, systematic approach to the teaching of Chinese characters.

    Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Good for beginners.......2006-03-15

This book is great for beginners. Students in their first or second semester of Chinese would benefit from having this book as a resource. It provides text with vocabulary, notes, a grammar section, drills and exercises, culture notes, and instruction on writing characters. One thing I really liked about this one is that the pinyin is omitted from the texts and dialogues. This prevents new learners from becoming dependent on the pinyin. I don't recommend getting the workbook unless you have nothing better to spend your money on or are just plain bored.

      Book Description

Forty lessons designed to introduce beginning students to the basic patterns and structures of Classical Chinese are taken from a number of pre-Han and Han texts selected to give students a grounding in exemplary Classical Chinese style. Two additional lessons use texts from later periods to help students appreciate the changes in written Chinese over the centuries.

Each lesson consists of a text, a vocabulary list featuring discussions of meaning and usage, explanations of grammar, and explications of difficult passages. The standard modern Chinese, Japanese, and Korean pronunciations are indicated for each character, making this a learning tool for native speakers of those languages as well. Appendices give suggestions for further readings, review common and significant words, explain the radical system, and provide Japanese kanbun readings for all the selections. Glossaries of all vocabulary items and pronunciation indexes for modern Chinese and Korean are also included.

      5 out of 5 stars At Last!.......2007-08-11

Finally! A very good text for introducing classical Chinese! I have looked at most of them and as a teaching/learning tool this is head and shoulders above the rest. Really in a class by itself.

I first studied Classical Chinese back in the days--yes it is true--when there were no textbooks available at all. That it has taken this long for somebody to produce a single volume that does what language text books are supposed to do (including exercises of various sorts, useful glossary and varied indexes, translations--just about anything you could need in addition to Korean and Japanese pronunciations)is surprising. But at last we now have such a book. It is written for normal language students, not ph.d's in linguistics. And if, like me, you are studying on your own, this one works! I am enormously grateful to the author. He has opened the door.

I would give the book more than 5 stars were it to include just one reading from Buddhist literature (the Sinological tradition in this country seems to feel that Daoism and Confucianism are legitimately Chinese but that Buddhism is a foreign intrusion. Silly, that.) Too, putting in the simplified characters would probably help some students, as would calligraphic versions of characters since the printed versions can sometimes be misleading. But these quibbles aside, Prof. Rouzer has done us a great, great service.

A very good book to learn chinese in a course with a teacher.

      5 out of 5 stars Chinese methods.......2006-02-25

New Practical Chinese Reader is an excellent textbook for beginners in Chinese. The materials are presented in a simple though explicit way, helped visually, which makes it easier to understand and memorize the contents.

4 out of 5 stars Great Addition to the Textbook.......2006-01-05

The Workbook is an excellent addition to the Chinese Reader Textbook; it helps you memorize words and practice pronunciation as well as develop basic writing skills. No question, you are not going to write like a native Chinese just by using the Workbook but it will certainly put you on the road to a better understanding of the characters and how they are combined to form complex words.

2 out of 5 stars Think twice before buying workbooks.......2005-12-27

I recently purchased textbook 1, textbook 1 audio CDs, and workbook 1 for this series. Although the quality of the textbook lessons seems excellent, and the audio CDs for the textbook are very clear, I wish I had not purchased the workbook.

The workbook has various exercises such as matching the pinyin to the sound, matching the characters to the pinyin, writing the characters, completing sentences, and such like. The first puzzlement came when I listened to the audio CDs I bought with the textbook; there is nothing on them that resembles the "match the pinyin to the sound" exercises. The second puzzlement came when I tried to find the answer key in the workbook. After more research on Amazon and elsewhere, I was able to piece together what you would need to make a complete set just for book one:

New Practical Chinese Reader Textbook 1, $19.95
New Practical Chinese Reader Textbook 1 Audio CDs, $29.95
New Practical Chinese Reader Workbook 1, $12.95
New Practical Chinese Reader Workbook 1 Audio CDs, $16.95
New Practical Chinese Reader Workbook 1 Instructor's Manual, $14.95 (Amazon has it, but it's hard to find)
New Practical Chinese Reader Workbook 1 Instructor's Manual Audio Tape, $9.95 (Amazon doesn't have this; I found it at www.chinabooks.com)

I have nothing negative to say about the quality of the lessons, but I wish I had known how many things I needed to buy to make the workbook usable.

It would be good if Amazon would disclose this somewhere in its editorial descriptions of the books.

5 out of 5 stars A Great Read for the Married and Unmarried Alike.......2007-08-14

I'm not part of the target demographic for Altared, since I've never dreamed of "the big day" or really imagined I'd ever get married. So I'm not really sure what drove me to pick it up save for the names of some of my favorite writers, like Lisa Carver. What I liked most about Altared is that it's not just anti-bridal industry or full of horror stories, but features women grappling with both their weddings and the countless issues weddings make us question. Even when the bulk of the essay is about the actual wedding day, the authors manage to say something more profound as well. The authors certainly don't escape their own barbs or criticism, but they are ultimately hopeful and humorous (of her gay wedding, Anne Carle writs: "What I remember is panic, worry, cold feet, and sometimes total and utter numbness. A coworker asked whether I felt like Bridezilla...but I actually felt more like Groomzilla.")

Jill Eisenstadt's "To Have or Have Not: Sex on the Wedding Night" looks at a topic I'd never have thought was a question and humorously breaks down the myth that wedding night sex is a triumphant celebration. Even though there's a little bit of repetition about the evils of Bridezilla-mania, wedding magazines, and the like sprinkled throughout the anthology, those pale in comparison to the many diverse and touching stories here, from Anne Carle's "Weddings Aren't Just for Straight People Anymore" to Gina Zucker's tale of crashing her mother's wedding and Samina Ali's tale of two weddings, one arranged marriage, one chosen. Carle's piece also touches on children, who are woven throughout these essays as either future hopeful possibilities or already born family members, but her reasons for not having children with her wife, and instead opening up their circle to a wider community, made her vision of marriage and family quite an expansive one. My favorite section was "Getting Hitched," where Jacquelyn Mitchard gives any fiction writer a reason to believe in the power of words, intuition, and creative visualization in "First, Reader, I Made Him Up, and Then I Married Him." What's interesting is how for many of these women marriage and their weddings seemed to sortof spring up, rather than be endlessly plotted, making them aware only at the last minute that they have specific ideas and dreams for their big day (as do their mothers). There's a kind of lackadaisical approach, at least at the beginning, that immediately sets them at odds with their more perfection-focused peers. As they explain just when the hysteria sets in, or wryly laugh at their own ability to get sucked in, such as Janelle Brown's "The Registry Strikes Back," they show that while weddings are events that are planned (even in very brief spurts of time), part of the process can still sneak up on you.

Lisa Carver's uniquely solitary approach in her trademark style (she starts her essay thusly: "For me, getting married has always been like throwing up. I do it as alone as possible, feeling sick, drastic, and doomed.") makes for one of the best essays here, by a woman who's been there, done that, and come back again to both wedding planning and attending. Several essays such as Carver's and Lori Leibovich's, question whether being an "anti-bride" or an "indie bride" is not its own form of capitulation to opposition to the salesmanship that's been built up around weddings. And anyone who liked Julie and Julia must read Julie Powell's take on what goes into making that wedding standby, "Rubber Chicken" (hint: it's not chicken). Taken together, these essays are about, yes, weddings, but moreso about love, family, and figuring out what the essentials are when it comes to each. As Jennifer Armstrong's essay about her slowly fading, much-postponed engagement and eventual breakup, sometimes the best wedding of all is the one you don't have.

5 out of 5 stars Super Funny and REAL.......2007-08-06

This collection of real life stories is absolutely hilarious! Almost every story leaves you chuckling a little at the rediculousness that is the wedding industry and our society. I think I could relate to something in almost every story as well. I am giving it to my sister in law who is recently engaged to help her see what people go through that she is not alone and hopefully show her how rediculous things can be and to not let it get out of control.

5 out of 5 stars An "altaring" experience.......2007-06-09

This book is funny, and very informative. It confirms the idea that each bride is individual whether they succumb to the pressures of the multi billion dollar bridal industry or prefer a private ceremony with their closest friends and family. I really enjoyed reading the wedding stories of these fresh new authors; a very interesting selection!

5 out of 5 stars Took me back.......2007-06-02

My husband and I have been married for 12 years now, but this took me back...and in so many different and authentic and enjoyable ways. I loved Colleen's introduction and felt each essay was like a friend sitting down over coffee and sharing her wedding story. This is not just for those about to be married since it invites so much reflection on what marriage means to modern women, and how we are redefining it with our partners as we go.

      5 out of 5 stars Fun Read.......2007-06-02

Great, fun read. This book is a collection of amusing and touching essays
about weddings and relationships and the extensive culture and traditions
surrounding weddings. These women writers offer a wide variety of personal
experiences sprinkled with a lot of humor, wisdom and insights. Enjoyed it
immensely. Great gift to all my women friends.

4 out of 5 stars Good but sad.......2005-03-11

I think this was a good book, but I still don't like how the babysitters don't babysit anymore. I don't think that Mary Anne and Logan should have broke up. I know Logan was controlling Mary Anne, but MAry ANne should just tell him adn compromise. I personally thought they were the perfect couple! Also Ann, why dont you write more books on them. I am the BIGGEST BSC fan ever!

5 out of 5 stars Mary Anne Breaks Up With Logan.......2003-07-30

Mary Anne breaks up with Logan (for good this time)! The way she went about it wasn't that great, in my opinion (she made poor Logan cry), but what she did was totally right. (It was the SAME reason again- he was smothering her and making all the decisions.)

Anyhow- the main points of the book are:

      1) she breaks up with Logan
      2) she starts getting over the fire a little bit
      3) her family starts to convert the barn to a new house
      4) 2(!) boys ask her out, not including Logan
      5) much of the grade excludes her
      6) and she decides to be her own self!

All in all- a HUGE turning point in the BSC, and a WONDERFUL book!

5 out of 5 stars ITS ABOUT TIME!.......2000-05-08

This was an excellent book, i really enjoyed reading it. It was about time mary anne ditched logan and became her own person, i think mary anne is the best, i can really identify with the way she is and how she feels about logan. Still it will be a bit sad to see the best bsc couple so far dissapear i am sure the future will give mary anne great opportunities and a very interesting life.

5 out of 5 stars A View to the New Mary Anne.......2000-01-23

When I was 8 i've been reading bsc books for the longest. Eventually it became dull and unrealistic about real middle school life. Mary Anne finally let go of Logan. Logan was too overprotective and thinks he's always right. I'm glad Mary Anne got rid of him and finding herself. They were an unlikely couple to began with. The story was very realistic and i felt for Mary Anne , and even Logan ( He may be protective, but his feelings were genuinely hurt as well) Ann M Martin gain back a fan after I read this book. If your shy and need to get rid of smothering boyfriend, this is the book for you.

5 out of 5 stars Funny, Witty, Wise.......2007-07-16

I've been through many breakups. After one of my very first breakups, with the girl I thought was my soul mate, I was devastated and heartbroken. I can't describe how awful I felt other than to say that it was like having a loved one pass away. It took me a long time to get over that breakup. I wish I would have had this book to help me through those sad and dark times.

After another breakup I made the mistake of not cutting off contact with the ex. We got back together, broke up, got back together, etc. It was an awful emotional rollercoaster with twists and turns that wreaked havoc on my psyche. I wish I'd had this book then to help me through those insane times.

Throughout all my breakups my friends and family were there for me (Thanks guys and girls) but their help lacked something and I always felt like no one knew what I was going through and what all these breakups meant. I didn't feel there was anyone who could guide me though the process and help me get some clarity and insight into my breakups.

All I have to say is thank you. Thank you Ms. Steadman for sharing your wisdom about breaking up and how I can use my breakup experiences to move on UP. I now get it!!!!!!

As the book says, "breakups are significant because the ultimately teach us about ourselves". I now understand that I can use my breakups as an opportunity to learn about what I really want out of dating. I've been challenged to take a negative, a breakup, and turn it into a positive, an opportunity to grow and learn.

Lastly, thanks for the "target rich" environment dating tip. I now have a better idea of what I want in a woman and where we might meet.

      Yours Truly,
      Juan

2 out of 5 stars It's a Breakup Not a Breakdown: Get over the big one and change your life - for good!.......2007-07-13

This book is too simplistic and tries very hard to laugh at a bad situation. It almost feels like a parody of "He's Just Not That Into You" in some ways. When I had heard about this book I misunderstood and thought it would have solid, cutting edge advice, but was greatly disappointed with the tongue in cheek humor. To sum it up, if you want to laugh about your situation, this is the book for you. However, if want solid answers that are above a 10th graders level of intellect, find another book. This book is not for a mature woman (unless you are trying to laugh).....too cutesy.....

5 out of 5 stars Congratulations on your break up!?!.......2007-06-14

Lisa Steadman's book "It's a Breakup, Not a Breakdown" is designed to help women discover a new, and improved, way to deal with the big relationship breakup. She has defined a well thought out process to help you feel, heal, and get back in the game.

Lisa begins by walking along with you through the grief process. I loved her post breakup supply checklist:

      (paraphrased)
      Your favorite "comfort beverage",
      PJs,
      Blankie,
      Tissues, and
a comfortable place for the fetal position.

She even provides you with a breakup vocabulary, e.g. Ex-factor, Boo-Hoo Crew, Fabulous Factor, and The Slump. Mixed in a long the way are breakup rules and breakup secrets.

"It's a Breakup, Not a Breakdown" addresses rebounds with qualified candidates and not so qualified candidates. Lisa tells you how to deal with revenge in a healthy way and start on the path to identifying your fabulous factor.

She helps you figure out your breakup persona, identifying celebrity examples.

In part two, Movin' On, you create an accountability contract to leave the past behind and take control of your heart. You get to change your Boo-Hoo Crew to a Woo-Hoo Crew and celebrate with a fabulous party.

Now that you've come out of your self imposed cocoon you can bust out as a beautiful butterfly and go about attracting the right guy for you. You can use tips from her fabulous female's guide to dating.

I thoroughly enjoyed "It's a Breakup, Not a Breakdown" and believe that even though the book is written for women, men should read it for the insights it will give them into dating, breakups, and the powerful minds of women.

If you're going through a breakup then get "It's a Breakup, Not a Breakdown" to help you move past the pain, heal the hurt, and go on to a better you leading to much improved relationships!

5 out of 5 stars A new spin on breakups.......2007-06-13

I was recently involved in a life-altering breakup that sent me reeling. Lisa's book was so helpful because she helps you put things into perspective. Yes, it's heartbreaking. No, it's not the end of the world. She helps you see that there's actually a upside to breaking up - it's a wake-up call that gives you the opportunity to take a good, long look in the mirror and decide what you really want in life. And it's not written in a style of "this is what experts say," but in a "listen, I'm your friend and you need to do this." It's almost as though Lisa's your best girlfriend giving you the pep talk you need. And I'm planning the Movin' On Party as we speak...

A MUST READ for anyone getting out a relationship.

5 out of 5 stars A SENSIBLE GUIDE TO NAVIGATING THE BROKEN HEART!.......2007-05-17

I have read many self help tomes, and some were truly enlightening (Co-dependant No More) but Lisa Steadman's fresh approach had me in stitches...really! I was surprised to discover an intelligent and wry wit that worked in tandem with the unsettling themes explored. Yes, it's painful, yes it stinks, yes, yes, yes -but NO, Lisa has no use for self pity and after each chapter, neither will you. "It's a Break-up," spirals upward from the depths of despair to enlightenment of the spirit. The book celebrates the individual, a return to you and disentanglement from the one that got away - good riddance according to the love expert! Read it and weep for him/her and all they're missing out on!!! Thank you Ms. Steadman, I needed that! Chris Varaste, author of Face of the American Dream

From the supplier: Antarctica has been growing warmer in the last 4,000 years and its thaw has been gaining speed, prompting scientists to fear that this could lift global sea levels to harmful heights. The rapid thinning of the Thwaites Glacier in west Antarctica could boost sea levels worldwide by as much as five meters. Another development that has inspired increasing concern was the recent calving of two of the region's icebergs, A-38 and B-9, which is believed to be another symptom of global warming and an impending global disaster.
