Miss Manners' down-to-earth collection of wisdom and pithy wit is a joy to read. Under the chapter on Table Manners, she notes "the inevitable slippage of spaghetti from the fork back onto the plate is Nature's way of controlling human piggishness" and suggests "a quick motion of the wrist, such as one uses to shake down a thermometer, will remove excess ketchup" from French fries. From common courtesy and proper attire to the etiquette of weddings, Martin knows right from wrong and sensible from rude. But this is no prissy, preachy tome. Miss Manners is very funny and has impressive insight into life.

Book Description

An indispensable manual to navigating life from birth to death without making a false move.

Your neighbor denounces cellular telephones as instruments of the devil. Your niece swears that no one expects thank-you letters anymore. Your father-in-law insists that married women have to take their husbands' names. Your guests plead that asking them to commit themselves to attending your party ruins the spontaneity. Who is right?

Miss Manners, of course. With all those amateurs issuing unauthorized etiquette pronouncements, aren't you glad that there is a gold standard to consult about what has really changed and what has not?

The freshly updated version of the classic bestseller includes the latest letters, essays, and illustrations, along with the laugh-out-loud wisdom of Miss Manners as she meets the new millennium of American misbehavior head-on. This wickedly witty guide rules on the challenges brought about by our ever-evolving society, once again proving that etiquette, far from being an optional extra, is the essential currency of a civilized world. 32 illustrations.

5 out of 5 stars Everyone should read this.......2007-08-12

Judith Martin's most important purpose in this Guide is the pursuit of respectful and civil human interactions. In our age of instant gratification, many people fail to take the time to do the small (or large, for that matter) things that make one another feel worthwile and respected.

I had the pleasure of meeting Miss Manners and her husband at a tea party this past spring. She happens to be intelligent, quick, and charming. You should have seen the hat that she was wearing. At first, not really knowing what to expect, I was concerned with minor aspects of my behavior, such as the crumb I dropped on the floor from the delicious scone she had served me. But those fears were quickly allayed by engaging conversation and more important matters. It was a wonderful experience.

Check this book out. It is interesting, entertaining, and is bound to help become more conscious of how your behavior effects those around you.

5 out of 5 stars Practical, Up-To-Date Advice.......2007-07-05

I'd read an earlier version of this guide to etiquette and remembered it as being useful and witty, but I am struck in this updated version by how practical is Miss Manners' advice. Don't be fooled, Gentle Reader: this book is packed with information that you may put to good use in everyday situations, not just at receptions at the White House or at fancy weddings.

Miss Manners covers cell phones and laptop computers. She lets us know that etiquette does NOT require that we agree to be put on hold when we phone a business and are asked, "Would you hold, please?" or that we leave a message when our call is routed to voicemail. (Hanging up on a machine is not rude, she assures us; it's not the same as hanging up on a person.)

Particularly helpful to me are the author's suggested ways of saying "no" politely--for example, when declining to enter into conversation with someone seated next to you on a plane or declining to donate money to a charity when someone phones to ask for money. Main take-away point: apologize ("I'm sorry. . . ."), and say "no" firmly, but do NOT offer any excuses (truthful or otherwise), which is where, she tells us, we are apt to get ourselves into trouble. If pressed, there is always a polite way to cut off the conversation, such as, "I'm sorry, but I never discuss my personal finances" or "I'm sorry, I'm not up to conversation right now."

This book is not just one that deserves to be purchased and read; it deserves to be read cover-to-cover and then referred to again and again.

Recommended most highly.

Brava, Miss Manners!

5 out of 5 stars What parents should have their children read.......2007-06-18

As a child I thought the Miss Manners' Guide was another way for my mother to torture me. However, in the adult world and when dealing with many situations, Miss Manners was the ultimate tool. Not only is it humorous, but it teaches you the way to portray your thoughts in such a polite way that no one, no matter how hard they try, can find fault. I have recommended it to many!

5 out of 5 stars Maintains the tradition.......2006-03-16

I bought the original, and this one is even better. Very helpful.

5 out of 5 stars THE Etiquette Reference.......2005-11-18

If you can only buy one etiquette reference book, make it this one. Miss Manners is second to none; her knowledge is extensive, her instruction is flawless, and her tone is pointed yet compassionate.

Filled with thoughtful humor, gentle encouragement, and the best advice for almost any conceivable occasion or circumstance, this book is already a classic and will remain the standard for etiquette elucidation and prescription for the foreseeable future.

Highly recommended!

      Book Description

The required classics in grades 7-12 are often too complex and removed from adolescent experience. This informative text uses thematic groupings built around recent young adult literature (YAL) as bridges to the classics. This second edition, which the authors have revised and greatly expanded, emphasizes the goal of helping teenagers become lifetime readers, as well as critical and confident readers. By pairing the required classics and young adult literature around common themes, the authors illustrate specific theme connections and include extensive lists of annotated YAL titles at the end of each classic title. New to this second edition:
    • Features more than 1,000 titles, hundreds published in the last five years.
    • Thirty-three recent YAL titles are included as theme connectors among the twelve most frequently taught classics.
    • Thematic units on "War: It's Effects and Its Aftermath" and "The Great Depression," including the "Dust Bowl" have been expanded.
    • Many new annotated YAL titles added to Archetypes.
    • A step-by-step approach to writing an Author Paper using YAL
    • Profiles of five outstanding school and public library programs that exemplify innovative student involvement.
    • Twelve interdisciplinary categories include lengthy annotated lists of fiction and nonfiction for interdisciplinary approaches.
    • Internet resources of book reviews, professional journals, authors, organizations, and Web sites devoted to YAL.

More than 30 years after they were published, S.E. Hinton's award-winning novels, The Outsiders and That Was Then, This Is Now, are as profoundly affecting as ever. With generation after generation growing up amid violence and angst, these classics continue to be relevant in their exploration of some of the harsh realities of youth. Now brought together in one handsome volume, the two titles are available for the many fans who finish one of Hinton's novels already champing at the bit for the next one.

In The Outsiders, Ponyboy Curtis and his brothers struggle to stay together after losing both parents. The road is uphill, especially for Greasers like them, kids from the wrong side of the tracks--at least according to the Socs, or Socials, jet-setting rich kids from the west side of town. Ponyboy finds himself in big trouble when his friend Johnny kills a Soc in self-defense, but it's nothing like the trouble they're heading for when they run away. That Was Then, This Is Now addresses more kids on the outskirts of society. Bryon and Mark--buddies, almost brothers--are from the same neighborhood as Ponyboy and his gang. While the war between Greasers and Socs has subsided somewhat, drugs have entered their world with a vengeance, and the closeness between Bryon and Mark is in the balance. Both novels are heartbreaking, touching, and brutal; neither should be missed. (Ages 12 and older) --Emilie Coulter

      Book Description

As popular today as they were when first published more than thirty years ago, The Outsiders and That Was Then, This Is Now are finally available in one handy edition!

Both titles incorporate universal themes of loyalty, independence, and alienation in a realistic voice that speaks directly to young adult readers. The Outsiders: Growing up in a rough city surrounded by violence, Ponyboy and his friends learn what it means to defend your turf and to stand up for each other. That Was Then, This Is Now: Mark and Bryon are practically brothers-they have no family to speak of-but they eventually come to a point in their lives where they have difficult choices to make; choices that might separate them forever.

Being tough guy and all is easy especially when you have friend beside you. but what happens that tough guy you used to be all changed and that friend beside wasn't really your friend it was your enemy. And both worlds changed.

5 out of 5 stars 2 classics made into an outstanding collection.......2002-07-18

This is a collection of two books by S.E. Hinton; THE OUTSIDERS and THAT WAS THEN, THIS IS NOW.
THE OUTSIDERS is about rivalry between the greasers and the Socs in 1960's Tulsa, Oklahoma. Ponyboy Curtis, a 14-year-old greaser, is one of the many kids caught up in this mess. Luckily, he has his fellow orphan brothers, Sodapop and Darrel, plus his gang of almost-brothers, to help him out. One night, though, Johnny Cade, another greaser, kills a Soc to save Ponyboy, which causes them to run to Dallas Winston for advice. Johnny and Ponyboy go to hide out, which turns into a chain of events leading to tragedy.
THAT WAS THEN, THIS IS NOW is about two teenage boys, Bryon and Mark. Mark is an orphan, and he was adopted by Bryon's family after his parents died. The two boys were like brothers before that, though. But things are changing between them. They both feel it, but they don't know exactly what's going on. Bryon is trying to move on, and grow up, by becoming more serious about some things, like his girlfriend Cathy. Mark still just lives for the thrill of things, and seems to be trying not to grow up. Then one night, Bryon comes to a horrible realization about Mark, which throws at him a decision that could change their friendship forever.

THE OUTSIDERS is easily one of the best books I've ever read. If you don't buy this collection to read both, at LEAST read THE OUTSIDERS. You won't forget this vivid and amazing story.
THAT WAS THEN, THIS IS NOW was not as good. The plot was less unique, and the characters were less developed. Still good, but it takes a backseat to THE OUTSIDERS.

This overall is an amazing collection by an amazing author, so if I had to describe, I'd say it was--amazing. This is a terrific buy.

      5 out of 5 stars A TIMELESS CLASSIC.......2001-11-01

I have loved this book since I was a child. It is one I treasure today.

Ponyboy Curtis and his equally weirdly named older brother, Sodapop live with their oldest brother, Darrell. The boys' parents are dead and Darrell scrapes by at a minimum wage job to make ends meet.

The brothers live in Oklahoma during the mid-1960s. Called "Greasers" because of their love for Elvis and hair grease, these boys are socially defined by their residence. They are considered "from the wrong side of the tracks."

The "Socs," short for "Socialites" are the more affluent kids who look down on the greasers. Ponyboy is friendly with a Soc girl, thus crossing social boundaries. He is equally friendly with other greasers, including Byron, a very bright and literate boy and his adopted brother, Mark. Mark ends up in jail and Byron graduates from the large high school he attends with Ponyboy.

Both boys share the love a quasi-soc girl. Her brother, called M&M is a brilliant boy who falls prey to drugs and hard street living.

The characters are sharp and well defined as is their neighborhood. The story is indeed compelling and many of these same characters are revisted in "The Outsiders."

      S. E. Hinton's books make me think of "Romeo & Juliet" and "West Side Story" with attitude. I love her works.

5 out of 5 stars The best books I have ever read.......2001-06-26

I consider "The Outiders" an instant classic I love this book. It was much better than the movie. "That was then, this is now" is also a terrific book the end is the best part I love it. It was so shocking and unexpected. I love the way she put Ponyboy in each book. the way she mixed the characters and town was just perfect I love them both.THis book puts them both in together which is just perfect.

5 out of 5 stars A book that I would most definetly read again and again!!.......2003-12-07

This book is so captivating!!! Personally whenever I got to a really good scene it feels like it's happening right around me!! Its about a boy, Ponyboy Curtis, he is in a gang called the Greasers. His parents died and he relies on his 2 brothers Darry and Sodapop Curtis. This is a truly good book!!!

5 out of 5 stars Comparison to my own life.......2002-04-14

I got the idea to read S.E. Hinton's "The Outsiders" from by best friend. We saw the movie together and she got me the book for my birthday. Now I've read it twice already!! It's my favorite book!! Reading this book made me compare it to my own life and I concluded that my life and the lives of "The Outsiders" are somewhat the same. Discrimination from other classes . We are the kids that get made fun of 'cause of how we talk and what we wear. But we try not let this bother us and get along with each other. It's us, "ghetto kids" (sometimes we get called that, and like were "thugin'" from the hood), and the other ones, the rich kids that shop and A&E and AF, the preppy kids, they're the ones that call us that stuff. But all in all, "The Outsiders" is my most favoriet book in the entire world, I love it!!

5 out of 5 stars THE OUTSIDES is on the INSIDE of my mind.........2001-05-04

I had to read the Outsiders by S.E. Hinton for school and another one of her books. I am currently reading That was then, this is now and its a really good book. The outsides is a really good perspective on life from an outsiders point of view on things.. I like in the "hood" and we are called hoodlums and we have to watch out for people like the "soc" or what we call, preppies.. S.E. Hinton just does a good job telling the point of view form a outisder and i rate this book on a scale from 1 to 5 a 6...

      5 out of 5 stars Great Cliffsnotes!!.......2000-09-22

WOW!! This was totally helpful! I had to read "The Outsiders" for school and these cliffsnotes helped me so much! They helped me to understand the book and to really grasp the concept of it. I would definitely recommend this for anyone reading "The Outsiders"!!

      Book Description

Modern American poets translate classical Chinese poetry.

The New Directions Anthology of Classical Chinese Poetry is a rich compendium of translations like no other. It is the first to look at Chinese poetry through its enormous influence on American poetry, starting with Ezra Pound's Cathay (1915), and including translations by three other major US poets (William Carlos Williams, Kenneth Rexroth, Gary Snyder) and an important poet-translator-scholar (David Hinton), all of whom have long been associated with New Directions. Moreover, it is the first general anthology ever to consider the process of translation by presenting different versions of the same poem by various translators, as well as examples of the translators rewriting themselves. The collection, at once playful and instructive, serves as an excellent introduction to the art and tradition of Chinese poetry, gathering some 250 poems by nearly 40 poets, from the anonymous early poetry through the great masters of the T'ang and Sung dynasties. The anthology also includes previously uncollected translations by Pound, a selection of essays on Chinese poetry by all five translators, some never published before in book form, and biographical notes that are a collage of poems and comments by both the American translators and the Chinese poets themselves.

5 out of 5 stars Making It New.......2003-05-12

The rediscovery of Greek and Roman literature kickstarted the Renaissance in Europe. In a similar way, though on a somewhat smaller scale, the conveniently Imagist makeover of Chinese poetry by Ezra Pound and Amy Lowell undoubtedly had a seismic and far-reaching effect on later 20th century American poetry. In his learned Introduction to this outstanding and indispensable Anthology, Weinberger traces the many subsequent debts owed by a galaxy of fine American poets to that seminal work of re-invention. Such impressively talented scholar-translators as Burton Watson, J. P Seaton, Jonathan Chaves and several others receive an honourable mention, though their work is well anthologised elsewhere, and Weinberger¡¦s brief seems to have been only to include full-time poets: with the possible exception of Hinton, that is. (However, Sam Hamill's, Arthur Sze's and David Young's names have inexplicably been left out: all three of them marvellous contemporary re-interpreters of the classical Chinese tradition, and all three fine poets in their own right.)

Weinberger concentrates in particular on five exemplary writers: Ezra Pound himself, William Carlos Williams, Kenneth Rexroth, Gary Snyder, and David Hinton. They are certainly all major figures, and it's useful to have them grouped together in this way (particular since the last of them diverges in such interesting ways from the Imagist 'Less is More'tradition: though he certainly 'makes it new' in accordance with that central dictum, which is even quoted in the original Chinese characters both on the cover and on the titlepage).

I thought I already knew quite a lot about American translators from classical Chinese---a whole shelf of mine already groans under their weight---but the William Carlos Williams renderings were entirely new to me, and so were some of the later Pound translations.

For this reader it's hard to contain his excitement at such a beautifully produced edition (only spoiled by a spine-label that's somehow been glued on upside down), and I recommend anyone interested in either recent American poetry or in the classical Chinese tradition to go out and buy it straight away. It will admirably complement Minford and Lau's recent historical anthology of all translations (both European and American, and both scholarly and 'creative'), which of course covers a much broader range, but which is similarly ground-breaking and enthralling to read.
