5 out of 5 stars Je recommande ce livre!.......2007-05-18

Translates French words to English, and English words to French. Awesome. It also has Canadian terms for the Québécois! Merci!

For those complaining about the binding and calling it flimsy -- let's remind ourselves that it's a six dollar *pocket* dictionary. It's going to get torn to pieces eventually with heavy use. If you're using this for other than a trip overseas, or your kid's 8th grade foreign language requirement, then purchase the hardcover -- you linguophile you!

5 out of 5 stars I assume all the definitions are correct.......2007-01-18

It's a dictionary -- and it works. 5-stars.

5 out of 5 stars Really extensive coverage Canadian terms.......2006-11-13

Although this is not a large scholarly Larousse, it serves as a great "pocket" dictionary--good for carrying to/from school. It also has the most extensive coverage of Québécois vocabulary that I have seen in a standard dictionary. This is a very useful tool for a student or traveller who is concerned about knowing Canadian terms and needs a portable dictionary.

5 out of 5 stars Extremely handy size and excellent depth.......2006-10-25

I studied French in high school 30+ years ago and hated it. Then I took four semesters in a community college 20 years ago (after learning Spanish) and loved it, but had little use for the language in any daily use. However, in planning to spend a month in France next year, I decided that I should study French again. This dictionary has been a wonderful aid in my studies. Although there are better, more expensive dictionaries (I personally own Petit Larousse Illustre and Harper Collins French College Dictionary), this one has an amazing amount of information and is so small and light that it can be easily referenced where a large bulky dictionary will be left on the shelf as an impediment to reading.

To resume learning French, I am reading Harry Potter A L'Ecole Des Sorciers (the Sorcerer's Stone book) and this dictionary is always at hand. The dictionary includes a surprising number of idiomatic phrases, a handy verb conjugation section, pronunciation and grammar sections. It is also handy that it includes words such as "eu", which is the past participle for avoir, and references one back to the infinitive form of the verb -- very useful when one hasn't yet mastered the past participles that are essential to the passe compose (a common past tense).

For just a few bucks, this is an amazing trove of information.

3 out of 5 stars An okay dictionary, but there are better ones out there........2006-05-17

This dictionary is useful and includes quite a few words--I can't argue that point. But its main promlem lies in its simplicty. It has a strong lack of synonyms, which makes it more of a beginner's dictionary. If you are a beginner, why buy a dictionary that will only support you for a year or so before you have to buy a more comprehensive one like Oxford-Hachette's or Larousse's. Also, I noticed that my copy wore rather quickly, which isn't good if you DO intend to keep it for very long. If you really like Webster's then buy this, but otherwise there are better, safer alternatives.

3 out of 5 stars Small and Disappearing.......2007-06-27

This French dictionary is just the size and shape I wanted, but it has two problems. One I should have expected, but the other came as a disturbing surprise. The first, expected problem is that the print is quite small, and someone with less-than-perfect eyesight or anyone in dim lighting will have trouble making out the words. The unexpected problem is that pages 291 to 354 are missing in the copy I received! That meant that I was without translations for all the English words between "indigo" and "resuscitate" in trying to make myself understood to French speakers in Quebec.

I probably should have demanded a refund, as the flawed dictionary is nearly useless. However, given the $4.95 price of the book, it was easy to consider it a throw-away.

5 out of 5 stars Perfect size.......2007-06-07

I would definitely recommend this dictionary as it was the perfect size to carry around while trekking all over France and yet there were very few words we tried to look up that weren't in it. The conjugation and french numbers information in the front were a handy bonus.

5 out of 5 stars Best little French dictionary.......2007-05-15

In a size that is easy to carry in every pocket or bag, this little wonder helps check those unknown French words fast. The verb tables in the front make finding conjugations much faster than the big verb books - I save those other books for more in depth study. I own three copies, and I may buy more soon.

5 out of 5 stars WOW.......2006-05-17

This is the smallest dictionary I've ever owned. Just over the size of an index card (and less than an inch thick) this dictionary actually deserves the term "pocket." On top of that, it actually has a surprising number of words. While you wouldn't want to use it for studying, it's good to carry around or have sitting beside you while watching or reading something for quick reference. It's become part of my normal French routine and I wouldn't trade it for another dictionary at or below this size. It's just amazing.

          Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Satisfying but not outstanding.......2001-09-09

There's nothing really remarkable about this book to make it resonate in a reader's memory. On the other hand, if you like English village mysteries - with the implied promise that the villain can be found among the residents described and won't turn out to be a passing serial killer - you'll appreciate this story. Granger gives us plenty of players with motives and doesn't make it easy to spot the crucial one. Unfortunately, her leading characters have come to an "awkward" point in their relationship and aren't a lot of fun to be with. Let's hope they work things out before becoming less pleasant company than the bad guys they're chasing.

3 out of 5 stars Reads like an early Deborah Crombie...........2000-05-03

If you want an easy to read and mildly entertaining book for a long flight somewhere-this is the book for you. The characters are sterotypical--including a career policeman with a failed marriage, his professional but meddlesome girl-friend, a troubled child, her caring teacher, an embittered husband (of the corpse-natch), and gypsies not much different from Auntie Mabel and Uncle Herbert who bought a camper for traveling around the U.K. Heck, this book isn't even scary. Granger will make a mistake if she marries the two main characters at some point--then there'll be no tension. Well, I read it anyway, but hey, I'm home sick today with a head cold.

4 out of 5 stars Good addition to this long-running mystery series.......2000-02-18

Inspector Alan Markby asks his long time girlfriend Meredith Mitchell to marry him, but she rejects his request. They continue to see one another, but their relationship has turned awkward as neither one is fully comfortable with the other at this time.

That changes when Alan begins an investigation that Meredith finds interesting. The Smith family members are tinkers who always stay on the Hazlewood Farm when they are in the area. This time when they park their camper, the murdered corpse of the farmer's wife greets the Smith patriarch. The tinker and the deceased's spouse Hugh report her stabbing death to the police. The victim's adolescent daughter Tammy is distraught over the woman's death and worries what will happen to her and he father, especially since evidence points towards Hugh. Tammy's teacher asks her friend Meredith to uncover the truth behind the slaying. Meredith and Alan travel down numerous paths in search of that elusive truth.

The twelfth Mitchell and Markby mystery remarkably retains its freshness due to the twists to their relationship. Readers obtain a glimpse of life in a small British village through the eyes of the lead characters. Alan and Meredith narrate the story line. That method works as it provides insight into what each one is thinking about their relationship as well as the case. The police investigation is entertaining especially the behind the scenes activities of an aid. An Ann Granger novel is always a wonderful reading experience and BENEATH THESE STONES proves the veracity of that statement.

Sean Russell writes for people who prefer books to movies. No snappy dialogue or nonstop action sequences, just a mesmerizing tale, multifaceted characters, and lyrical descriptive prose. Beneath the Vaulted Hills is the first part of Russel's River Into Darkness series, which is itself a two-part prequel to Russell's Moontide and Magic Rise series. Each series stands alone, despite some characters in common.

Both series are set in the first half of an alternative 19th century. In Beneath the Vaulted Hills, Lord Eldrich, the last Mage, seeks to suppress all knowledge of magical powers. Two young men, Hayes and Kehler, and the beautiful Countess of Chilton have discovered clues to a possible trove of magical lore. It's concealed in a labyrinthine cave system behind a mysterious "crypt" linked to Teller, a renegade mage apprentice who founded a society to preserve magic. Erasmus Flattery, once a student in Eldrich's household, knows how dangerous the Mage can be, but finds himself joining the investigation. Both the Tellerites and Lord Eldrich follow, determined to control their discoveries.

Russell has the rare ability to immerse his readers so completely in his tale that reaching the end feels like waking from a particularly vivid dream. Fortunately the second volume of the series, The Compass of the Soul, continues it. --Nona Vero

          Book Description

The last of the world's great mages, the enigmatic Lord Eldrich has dedicated his life to eradicating all remaining vestiges of magic in the world. But the fanatical Tellerites--followers of a long-dead mage-apprentice--oppose Eldrich, desiring the hidden knowledge of the magical arts and with it the coveted key to immortality. Drawn into this conflict against his will is Erasmus Flattery, who as a boy dwelt with Eldrich, and is still haunted by the memories of what transpired during his stay with the mage. Now Erasmus must lead as expedition to search for a secret taht has remained hidden since the time of the first Mages!

          5 out of 5 stars Amazing.......2007-01-07

In the Sean Russell's book Beneath the Vaulted Hills, he arguably creates one of the deepest fantasy stories ever contrived in a long while. Throughout the book Russell's style is unparalleled as he weaves an enchanting tale about a European-esque world. Reinventing the overly done concept of magic and mages, while setting it to an engrossing fictional world, creates an amazing atmosphere that will keep you on the edge of Russell's every word. Sean Russell continues to best himself though as he also creates memorable characters with gripping inner conflicts with actually believable personalities. Russell, in writing such a fine novel, proves himself worthy to sit in the Pantheon of fantasy greats with the likes of Tolkien and the lot.

          5 out of 5 stars uniquely satisfying.......2003-05-08

This was my first Sean Russell book and, like most of my favorite books, just came out of left field.
Rather than give details of the story, let me describe the reading experience.
Fantasy is so often placed in 'mud and thatch' medieval settings, which in reality leaves little to work with. Swords, fire, magic, horse-riding and running from the enemy are all one can play with. Ok, maybe elves and castles. Groveling beggars populate the masses.
Russell picks the perfect setting here. Elegance, style, pre-industrial but post-literate, old enough to have a shadowy history but young enough to be just awakening to the excitement of the 'renaissance'. I would place the culture as somewhere between 1700 and 1800, though there are obvious deviations.
As a sub-genre this might be called Alternate History Fantasy, as the environment is very 'real', almost contemporary, and magic is very, well, magical, and rare.
The energy of the characters following the 'magi' reminds me of contemporaries studying the Sphinx, though in fantasy something real can actually develop. This story is probably 80% academic mystery, and the depth of the plot and the mostly standout characters swirling around the unknown make for uncomparable fun.
The book diverges halfway through, and this is what really captures me.
I use to be a spelunker and Russell seems to have actually done some himself, because the second half of his book is so intense and real that he fully captures the sheer rigurousness and challenge of negotioting a real cave system. The combined sense of isolation, claustophobia and mystery that is unique to caving is captured perfectly, and really makes you feel like you've journeyed somewhere, rather than the few miles that in reality one has moved. (one does not journey lightly underground for long: bone-sucking chill, nowhere to go to the bathroom that somebody might not crawl through later, one must pack extremely light, you can't build a fire, its almost impossible to adequately respond to an medical emergency, etc)
Lots of good, intellectually-paced dialogue and very atmospheric.
All four are worth reading, but 'Vaulted' was my favorite. Hardly a cliche in the whole series.

          5 out of 5 stars Excellent Find!.......2003-01-01

This is one of the best finds in my reading for 2002. A great introduction to Sean Russell's great stories and deep plots it has everything a great story needs. After reading this I couldn't help myself but get his other books and I am not dissapointed! If you like fantasy or science fiction then this book is a must.

While the characters are slow to be introduced it is a problem every writer faces and is well made up for by there human-like qualities in a world completely believable. Great work Sean Russell!

4 out of 5 stars Intriguing Beginning to a Masterful Fantasy.......2002-07-11

Beneath the Vaulted Hills is a beautifully-conceived fantasy tale. Written by Sean Russell, author of the Moontide and Magic Rise duology, the story follows Erasmus Flattery-a man of science once fostered in the home of Lord Eldrich, the last of Farrland's magi. Erasmus is called upon to aide his friend, Samual Hayes, in escaping capture by both men of the Admiralty and a group of mysterious strangers.

Erasmus, haunted by demons from his past, has spent his life seeking knowledge of the arcane. His relationship with Hayes brings him closer than ever to realizing his goal. But he is not the only player in this game of intrigue. The Tellerites, a band of renegade magi long thought dead, seek knowledge now known only by Lord Eldrich. Eldrich, a figure of mystery and legend, more feared than admired, will stop at nothing to remove the last vestiges of magic from the world before he, too, is forced to leave. Each character has a role in the story, and the dramatic, cliff-hanger ending leaves the reader wondering which characters move the pieces, and which are the pawns.

The concepts of empiricism and natural science, strongly woven throughout Beneath the Vaulted Hills, are rarely considered in fantasy works, and the setting-a late-medieval society, empowered through the use of the recently-developed cannon-is one not often explored by fantasy writers. Nevertheless, Russell manages to instill both personality and believability into his characters and their countries. Fans of both science and magic will delight in Russell's work.

          1 out of 5 stars A bore.......2002-02-15

I purchased this book based on all the good reviews, however, I was very disappointed in this book and could barely finish it. I found the characters to be very vague and unfriendly. I did not care for them nor cared what happened to them. I found myself knowing as little at the ending of the book as I did at the beginning. I realize that this is only the first book however, my interest was never sparked and I have little curosity in the outcome of the story. I, for one, will not be searching for the next book in the series.

          3 out of 5 stars A Christian version of a Louis L'Amour novel!.......2003-01-09

Brazos Fortune is determined to find his dream under some type of cross. However, he is forced to leave behind his youngest child, beloved Dacee. An adventurer herself, she runs away.

Gold fever, hunger and hardship mark the adventures and close calls suffered by Brazos and his friends. Bly certainly does a good job of painting the surroundings clearly to the reader.

This is the first book of the series, Fortunes of the Black Hills.

5 out of 5 stars Stephen Bly Captures the Spirit of Dakota.......2001-03-10

This was the first book I've read by Stephen Bly, and I am more than anxious to read the next in the series. As a former resident of the Black Hills, I found Bly's descriptions of the Dakota landscape accurate enough to make me homesick. His characters are well developed and sympathetic, and I especially enjoy his sparkling dialogue passages that help develop the characters and bring comic relief and a sense of comraderie between the characters not unlike the good natured humorof a good John Wayne movie. I look forward to reading the second book in this series.

          5 out of 5 stars A Dangerous Quest.......2000-09-27

Brazos Fortune sets out on a journey for a new home after locals threaten the lives and property of his family. He follows a vision he receives of a Dakota cross and faces corrupt lawmen, wild outlaws, and a bitter winter as he wrestles with the temptations of gold and a burning desire to be reunited with his family. Each family member seems so real and alive. Reader is pulled in to care about what happens to them.
