Excellent Dictionary.......2007-10-18
Just what I needed for my desk at work. It's hard bound so it will handle a lot of use.
surely you are joking.......2007-09-18
I ordered the item in your communication except with a CD included. The CD never showed up. You then sent a replacement with exactly the same result. After I called Amazon I was informed that you were out of the advertised item. I was then informed via email, to which no reply was allowed, twice, that I would be charged for the item and its replacement I can see that we will be having a battle royal with the credit card company as there is no way on God's green earth that I will pay anything for such absolutely lousy customer service.

Great resource of advanced ESL learners.......2007-08-09
Since I am an international student studying in the United States, my perspective is slightly different from those of other reviewers. If you are studying for standardized tests such as SAT or GRE, this is the ultimate authority you should refer to whenever you feel unsure on the exact meaning of vocabularies you encounter in past administrated tests. If you practice on questions on analogy for awhile, for example, you would discover that the ETS (Educational Testing Services), the maker of GRE and SAT, also relies intensively, although not thoroughly, on Merriam-Webster Collegiate Dictionary definitions to design their questions. Only by referring to the MW can you truly understand why certain answer choice is correct, while others are not.
As a bonus, you also have exclusive rights to send inquires on difficult words to MW resourceful editors, a service I find extremely helpful. Although responses are slow (because of, surprisingly, numerous projects in Merriam-Webster Corporation), you will generally receive the most authoritative answers from the brightest people on the planet. As an ESL learner, I am deeply obsessed with the flexibility, inherent logic, and beauty of English language; all introduced by this enlightening tome.
A worthwhile purchase.......2007-08-04
I have been using this dictionary for many years. I have gone through a few editions. A couple of weeks ago I was looking for a word that this dictionary did not contain. I decided that it was time for a change. I purchased The New Oxford American Dictionary.
I found out that there are features that this dictionary has that The New Oxford American Dictionary, Second Edition does not contain. First of all, the thumb tabs are quite helpful and time saving. Next, would be the word origins, country and languages when applicable, and year that it actually became a word. Followed by the pronunciation keys and parts of speech. In some cases, they also have word variations.
The only reason that I had bought the Oxford one was because this dictionary has words missing that I feel should be included. If a larger more updated version of this becomes available, I will be happy to purchase it.
Merriam-Webster's Collegiate Dictionary, 11th Edition.......2007-05-06
Excellent reference book that I use on a daily basis. Spell Check on my computer doesn't always have the answers to my horrific spelling ability. So having this reference book along with the Spell Check on my computer I can actually write an email, letter or report and impress everyone without looking like I have the worst spelling abilities this side of the Mississippi !!! LOL I should have purchased this book along time ago and now that I have I really have no idea what I did without this reference book all this time !!!

Small and very handy........2007-09-07
Does not take up much space, and it's easy to use when you are in the need of correctly spelling some of those long and complicated medical terms.
great tool for the medical secretary .......2007-05-08
I've had a previous edition for over 20 years. However, my typist keep the book together with rubberbands since the binding had eventially broke. This is a great little book at a reasonable price. My typist is over 70 years old, and I hope I replace this current edition for her in 20 years.
A boon for medical records/transcriptionists.......2002-05-04
This is an excellent book for the medical records tech/transcriptionist. The easy to use book helps you out when you can't remember if vertebrochondral should have an "r" behind the "t" or not (it shouldn't for all of you dying to know;)). I generally do not have a problem with spelling but it's very helpful to make sure I'm transcribing correctly. And it's a nice gift for any of your fellow co-workers who need a little help with spelling. I'd recommend this book to any person in the medical records/transcription field.
Webster's Medical Speller, Second Edition.......2000-02-20
This is an inexpensive, must have, quick glance word/speller desk reference book for medical transcriptionists. Always a time saver!

Medical lingo is nearly a language in its own right, so for students of medicine or amateurs who'd like to understand their doctors' conversations, a dictionary of medical terms is a necessity. With a section on medical prefixes and suffixes, more than 2,000 new entries added since 1986, and thousands of illustrations, the recent version is 112 pages longer and a lot easier on the eyes. There's information on AIDS, biochemistry, psychiatry, and geriatric medicine, concise definitions for procedures, tests, and medications, plus all the terms and topics that hit the headlines or appear in your physical report.
Book Description
Merriam-Webster's Medical Desk Dictionary, 2005 Revised Edition is an invaluable resource for health care professionals with over 59,000 entries covering today's most widely used health care terms, abbreviations, medication names, and biographies of medical pioneers. Unlike unwieldy medical encyclopedias, Merriam-Webster's Medical Desk Dictionary, 2005 Revised Edition is compact, portable, and affordable, making it perfect for everyone from allied health students and medical professionals to consumers without a medical background who want a desktop reference without investing a lot of money.

Perfect tool book for foreigner medical guy.......2007-01-10
If you don't speak English, and try to start your medical career in a English country. Merriam Webster's Medical Audio Dictionary can help you successful.
Nice to have and very helpful.......2006-02-28
Best in: Quality of sound, sharp pronunciation, complete word coverage, shortcut menu access.
Desired improvements: pronunciation shortcut key, better integration with other products in the same family. (Shortcut key access causes crash after switching direction inside application), lack of examples and diagrams, no IPA reference.
So 4-stars though no 5-stars product found yet.
A not so great investment.......2003-06-13
I have taught allied health students for years and I can say that I was most disappointed with this book. It is surprising that Delmar Learning, who claim to be such a leader in health textbooks, would put their name on something this miserable. The terms are largely out of date, definitions are badly written, there are no illustrations and students (who apparently this is designed for) would find a hard time using this book. I hate to be so negative but in a word IT IS AWFUL!
Not my favorite medical dictionary/manual........2000-06-13
This was the first medical dictionary I got while in medical school. Since I was in there for Neuroscience and not to get an MD. perhaps my area of speciality was too limited for those who would usually use this dictionary. It was extremely frustrating to look up things such as encephalocele and find either no information or very little information. I decided that as a dictionary of medical terminology, books such as this cannot be limited to the concise words given in other dictionaries. There were too many times I was reading or writing medical papers in which I had to put this particular version down and look up the information I needed either at school or on the Internet. When you are in a hurry, you don't have time to do either of those things and prefer to have something you can just flip open alphabetically and get the answer you were looking for. I realize someone put a lot of work into this, but it just isn't enough and I have since gotten another dictionary to which I regularly refer. It isn't this one. Karen Sadler Science Education, University of Pittsburgh
Great Dictionary!.......2000-03-25
Medicine is not my field, but I have had no problems in understanding medical terms with this dictionary, ranging from simple words like "drive" from a medical point of view, including Ct-Scan, to the strangest words for the laymen. It should be useful for a wide range of professionals working in health care. A very fine presentation!

Relating.......2002-03-21
I went to the library to get books for a paper that I had to write, and as I was browsing through the teenage section, I picked out a few books that I thought looked interesting. As I was walking away, this book just caught my eye. I went up to it and read the cover and I decided to get it. Well that night I started reading it at like 9:30, and I couldn't stop, and I am not an avid reader, so to find a book that I liked was interesting. I stayed up (even though I had school the next day) and I read the WHOLE thing. I was up until 1:30, I just couldn't put the book down. So, I went to school the next day and I was telling my best friends about it. I passed the book to my friend Jess, and she started reading it and couldn't put it down. Now, 3 of my other friends want it next. Stupid me didn't realize that there are 2 more books, I was sooo happy. This is one book that me and my friends can DEFINITLEY relate too. It is about something that every teenage girl is faced with and to read something that I can relate to makes me happy... I just wanted to tell all the young girls out there that are around my age, to READ THIS BOOK. You will LOVE it... I can't wait to get the next one...
"Forever" for the new millennium.......2001-11-04
Heroine Coll, influenced by her feminist-to-the-point-of-man-hating mom, rightly believes that her first sexual relationship should go beyond the physical and as she holds out for "holistic sex," her boyfriend Art, a former player, becomes more and more frustrated. Much of the first book is taken up with the struggle between head, heart and hormones. In book number two, when Coll and Art do finally become lovers, the intensity of the relationship becomes too much for baggage-laden Art who skips off to New Zealand. In book number 3, Coll is recovering slowly from the relationship that left her ravaged when Art, interested in being "just friends" returns. But is there really such a thing between men and women?
Protective parents will complain that this book is "too" for teens -- too sexy, too honest, too promiscuous -- but the sexual relationship between Coll and Art is mature and tasteful. Collete describes the overwhelming emotion of being physically intimate, rather than play by play of what goes where, and condoms are mentioned regularly, with a subplot of a best friend's abortion fortelling the disasters of going skin to skin, even one time.
The flawless writing, realistic story, and complex characters blend together to give a sense of "I know what she means!" about the short series. This is Forever for the new millennium, British style: A smart girl falls in love and has a sexual relationship that runs its course with no harsh repercussions (such as disease, pregnancy, or death). Hopefully a three-in-one version of the series will be published soon, because it is impossible to not want to read all three books in one sitting.
Great story for budding teens & high school students.......2001-07-07
When I read the first few sentences of this book I expected a trashy romance-type novel. While the book does contain some of those elements, its realistic enough to teach valuable lessons about sex to those just beginning to discover it, or even those who have only been at it a few years. Colette plays a great heroine, even to the point of performing a few heroic acts herself against drunk would-be rapists. And then there is Art, the affluent, arrogant, muscular, every-high-school-girls dream type who is used to getting what he wants, sexually and otherwise, no thanks to the flighty free-spirited dad and stepmom he has who go to almost any lengths to ensure he gets the sex he "deserves as a young man." Colette's parents, and most especially her mom, play a counterpoint to Art's free-spirited folk. I didn't quite agree with the character development of Colette's mom...I believe she went much too quickly from the overbearing, highly feminist dragon-type to the loving woman willing to go to any lengths to protect her precious daughter, although the point where she storms in to yell at Art's parents had me smiling and saying "good for her" at the end. All the other friends tie in well to the story where it is appropriate, but those are the characters you remember most after reading this book.
I highly recommend this story for any teenager, sexually experienced or not, for the values and trials it teaches.
I must also state that the book is written in British dialect, and American teens may not understand some of the words used. But the glossary at the back of the book is helpful, although I would have put it in the front of the book, or at the very least a note that readers might refer to the back of the book for American translations of British words they might not understand (after all, one does not expect to find a glossary in a work of teen fiction).
