Book Description
pproximately 5,000 words are presented in 41 separate categories, including politics, military terms, business terms, communications terms, medical terms, scientific terms, household terms, and dozens more. English-speaking readers will find ready help in translating German words and phrases sometimes too specialized to be found in ordinary alphabetically arranged bilingual dictionaries. Here's a fine school supplement for language teachers, students, and language labs, and an aid for anyone who must sometimes get information from German journals and other publications. Line art illustrations, charts, and a comprehensive alphabetical word index enhances this volume's usefulness.

Phenomenal........2007-10-06
This book is a MUST HAVE! Perfect for study and practice. Arranges common nouns thematically, which helps for tourists. This book saved my life in German II.

A good and useful book with a serious flaw.......2007-09-21
Other have already pointed out both the qualities and the main flaw of this book, but let me refinforce their opinions.
Barron's series Mastering Vocabulary is a great tool for language learners! Using a normal course, such as one in the Colloqial series, you will end up with knowing the grammar relatively well and with a vocabulary of 1500 words. That's a good start, but you need to know more words to get moving. The Mastering Vocabulary series is a great help along the way. By doing one chapter each week, you will know more than 7000 words after half a year. That is enough to live in a language where the language is spoken and use it in all everyday interactions and communication. My only real complaint with the series is that it's not available for more than four languages.
In the case of Mastering German Vocabulary, the failure to provide plural forms is a flaw. For French, Italian and Spanish, plurals are fairly regular but not so for German. Had it been included, this book would received five stars but it's such big a flaw that I've removed two starts. Hopefully this will be addressed in the next edition.
Great refresher for dormant German.......2007-09-02
This is a fine book to bring all that German forward from the buried data banks in your brain. I'm using it to study up for my coming trip to Germany. Modern vocabulary and sentences help to update my 30-year-old knowledge base. Good price and worth it.
Painless Vocabulary.......2007-03-14
I like the way this book is organized - as the title indicates, by theme. I am not more enthusiastic only because my vocabulary level is just a bit beyond the one presented. For someone who has studied German only a few years, I think this could be a nice supplemental source.
Very useful..........2006-11-10
This book is very well organized and allows you to easily find a section of the book in order to learn words relevant to you. As every speaker progresses, he finds that it is more important for him to learn certain vocabulary before others. This book makes this easy. It also has small notes on grammar. I would recommend it to anybody.
Book Description
A reformed dieter and an exbulimic, Laura Fraser traces our fixation with thinness to the images that began appearing a hundred years ago in magazines like Ladies Home Journal and Cosmopolitan. Fraser chronicles the corresponding growth of a $50 billion a year industry that provides false hope in exchange for cash. In this meticulously researched journey through Dietland, Fraser gives the inside scoop on:
Diet drugs, including the controversial phen/fen
Diet gurus Richard Simmons, Susan Powter, and Dean Ornish
Commercial weight loss centers, including Jenny Craig and Weight Watchers
Weightloss products like thigh creams and diet cookies
Provocative, political, and personal, this revealing book is a remarkable work of investigative journalism and an enthralling, compelling story with almost universal relevance.
The hardcover edition of Losing It received major television coverage, including appearances on "NBC Nightly News," the "Today" show, "Home and Family," and "Good Day New York." Excerpts of Losing It and related articles by Laura Fraser appeared in Mirabella, Vogue, Glamour, Fitness, Good Housekeeping, Self, Mademoiselle, and Health.
Customer Reviews:
Factually Incorrect.......2003-02-27
I have yet to finish reading this book; however I was incensed when I came across a glearing inaccuracy on page 101. This says tons against this 'writer' who obviously did NOT do her homework when writing this book.
It is very hard to find credibility in a book which lacks a factual background.
Further -
Calling Paul Raford a '..public health specialist.." is like calling your family doctor a public health specialist. Dr Raford had written nothing on diet pills before the Wyden hearings. His critique was seriously flawed and poorly written.
Incidentally aspirin has far more adverse effects and overdoses per doses consumed than diet pills ever have. Ms Fraser implies that all overdoses were from PPA. Far from it. A lot more attention should have been paid to products like ephedra way back then!
Sure the diet industry is not perfect. I am horrified at how the public accepts new diets that come on the market; but I am also disappointed with writers who go to the trouble to write a book yet make little effort to check their facts.
Just Finished Losing It.......2003-02-14
She covers nearly everything, doesn't talk much about Type II diabetes, doesn't cover liposuction at all, and she DOES say that losing weight is deleterious to your health (directly negating what a previous reviewer wrote). She talks about dieting causing more fat to be layered on when it fails, but also about how dieting to lose weight actually kills the heart muscle, and can cause heart attacks (John Candy is cited). Her thing is not that it is unhealthy to "lose weight if you are meant to once you start eating healthy and exercising regularly", but that repetitively starving the body's muscles and other tissues is simply bad for your health. She says some people will stay round and plump looking even when eating normally (i.e., not overeating all the time, not undereating all the time, but eating till your satisfied and knowing when you are hungry.)
What I really liked was that she talks about the healthfulness of eating plenty of nutritious calories and getting plenty of exercise, as in "eat your veggies and then go outside and play." Seems so commonsensical, but most of us would rather wait for a pill to solve our problems and to do it fast. We would rather change to fit society than tell society to start accepting ALL sorts of bodies and types. Probably, because this is the USA, we will never get around to letting go of our puritanical viewpoints (part of which is denying the self=godlike), and we will continue to be thrown an onslaught of thin, plastic surgery girls to look at in the media. The only way we can stop feeling bad about ourselves is probably to just get over it and live our lives to the fullest.
I like what she says about living.
Wake-up America!.......2002-05-24
The book goes behind the closed doors of the diet industry and reveals what's really going on in the world of dieting. This book really is a wake-up call to all those who have fallen into the American diet trap. I was astonished at some of the tricks and gimmicks used by the diet industry! The book even gives some steps to becoming a healthy eater by relying on yourself, rather than following someone else's diet.
Freedom from Guilt!.......2002-02-14
Fraser traces the history of what's been considered acceptable weight (surprise, it hasn't always been the Kate Moss figure), as well as debunking all those "diet gurus" out there. Goodbye Richard Simmons, Weight Watchers and Susan Powter! She presents all the negatives associated with gastic bypass (not only do they fail, but they bring about huge health problems). Finally, she offers guidelines on how to live DIET FREE! Yes, she actually promotes how to just eat normally (who's have thought?). BUY THIS BOOK, you will not regret it!
An excellent read for anybody.......2002-01-26
As a fat person, I was particularly interested in this book and it did not disappoint me. The author's engaging style and thorough research draw in the reader and make this book a quick read. I was convinced after reading this book that weight loss surgery would be the absolute worst thing for me and that I should concentrate on living an active life and enjoying myself instead of going on yet another frustrating and difficult diet. There is no "quick and easy answer" to weight loss, which is amply illustrated by this book.
Book Description
False Profits is an in-depth examination of the multi-level marketing
industry and related illegal pyramid scheme phenomenon which have grown rapidly in the US and abroad in the last 15 years. The examination looks at the MLM field from the perspective of its social, personal and spiritual effects on those enrolled and solicited.
Customer Reviews:
Great for Mediocre Minds.......2006-09-08
Not only is this book OLD, it is the most rediculous and illnatured book on MLM period. It is a great book for those that don't see where the trends are going and the importance of MLM/Network Marketing in our lives. 50% of the products in our society are moved from some form of NM. Ask Donald Trump, Bill Gates, Bill Clinton and Warren Buffet to name just a few...do you think Mr. Fitzpatrick knows more than them??? He wouldn't be writing urban legends if he was...
Get over it.
Be careful what you read, it will not only impact how you think but it will also either improve or downscale your life.
Oh, come on people....do the research........2004-07-02
I agree with a number of the responses here about the spectrum of information and OPINION in this book. The sad thing is that everything is made so generic and stereotyped. There are good and bad examples of most all business models and distribution methods. MLM, Networks Marketing has had more than many others since it is so open to "everyman" to get involved. There are bad examples at the corporate level too - obviously Amway comes to mind as do the many "businesses" that became illegal pyramid schemes. But that's not it!
Network Marketing is, in fact, taught in some business schools now (marketing). Check out the presentation at "Brilliant Money" web site.
Yeah - the name sounds "typical", but it is a good review by Tim Sales and University of Illinois at Chicago Professor of Marketing - Dr. Charles King.
Not All MLM/Network Marketing Are a Pyramid !!! Research.......2004-05-11
Alot of people think that network market is a semi-legal pyramid scheme, but not all network marketing companies are a pyramid. If many of you do your research, you'll see that companies such as life plus, melaleuca, market america, etc. are true network marketing companies they'll really compensate you if you refer people to their company & products. Before anyone pre-judges a network marketing company, do your research on each company, plan, products, etc. The true pyramid schemes are the one's that you get in the mail that ask you to send between a $1 - $5 to each name & address, and in return, you'll make millions within a few months...that's a true pyramid scheme, I know because I've lost money to these pyramids through the mail. I now know how to tell the difference between a pyramid & a real opportunity. These pyramid schemes give real & great network marketing companies a bad reputation. So again, do your research on a company before enrolling or sending out money. There are truly real gold mines out there, so please do your research by reading articles on them, and check the Better Business Bureau (www.bbb.org) . Thank you.
Good overview of a hopeless field.......2003-03-24
Reading "False Profits" was one of the factors that made me decide to quit the MLM job I had been in for a year and a half. It showed me that my MLM job isn't really a fantastic opportunity in which I alone happened to be failing miserably. Failure is universal in MLM. Though the company I was in was never mentioned in the book, every MLM technique described in the book was used in my company. This demonstrates how the recruiting and sales techniques are common to every MLM company out there. I never wanted to get rich. I just wanted another job. This set me up for failure right from the start. Only the greediest, most ruthless and most aggressive people can make it in MLM's. To succeed, you have to be willing to ...as many people as possible into a hopeless, money losing job. The authors drag in lots of talk about spirituality, altruism and worthiness of career goals. They do this to contrast most jobs with MLM jobs. To me, this wasn't necessary, but I can see why they did it. The book lacks real organization and conciseness in its presentation of how MLM's are set up and run. But despite this, the book is one of the very best out there for describing the futility of a career in an MLM. I thank Fitzpatrick and Reynolds for helping to cut short my losses in my MLM job. I highly recommend this book for anyone who is in an MLM or thinking about joining one.
It's not the company, it's the people.........2003-02-05
I truly do not believe that all MLMs are evil and are new age adaptations. I believe Mr. Fitzpatrick and Ms. Reynolds are some what off tangent, although I do agree with some key aspects.
I do believe that there are a lot of unethical MLMers that take advantage of people. I hope their business comes to an end.
But there are a lot of Network Marketing companies that are ethical, neutral businesses. People choose to make these companies look bad or good. The companies themselves are of good reputation and credibility. A lot of people stamp the company based on their independent business owners who act unethical and cult-like.
I am in one and I for one use God's truth in my dealings and my approaches. In our organisation, we teach principles of Godly values, not materialism values.
But let me reitirate one thing here - understanding that the internal affects the external was, never has been and never will be, new age practise. God has mentioned this many time over in His Word. But let me set things straight here - only with God can we become better spiritually and mentally.
It seems that a lot of people, without realising nor knowledge, just tend to believe what others perceive without much research and understanding.
People cannot accept change and new bedazzling things like a thousand people rising up and being estatic about freedom. Why? Most people have given up being free. So when they see this and hear of principles that boggles their minds (which are not new but old with the ancients), they tend to deduce it to cult-like mannerisms.

False Profits.......2007-10-04
Good book. A real page turner. Really made want to read "Cover Your Assets" (Second book in this series).
Not a Profit or a Loss.......2007-04-20
Tucker Sinclair thinks she's on the fast track to making partner at Aames & Associates, a Los Angeles based business consulting firm. She just has one last interview with her boss before the announcement.
That interview doesn't go anything like she expects, however. Instead of reviewing her performance at the firm, Gordon announces that she and the company are being sued for some work she had done for Dr. Milton Polk. Dr. Polk had come in wanting Tucker to write what he told her to write and was less than pleased with her honest business evaluation. Now some investors in his medical company are saying they were defrauded and are suing to recover their money.
Tucker thinks she doesn't have anything to worry about until she discovers the original report for Dr. Polk is missing. When he turns up dead, she really starts to panic. Can see find the documents and save her career while dodging a killer?
I am a sucker for books set in Los Angeles, and this one proved to be fun in that regard. As a mystery, it fell a little flat. The plot was a little too convoluted for its own good. It makes sense, but it needed a little more time to be ironed out. Tucker was fun to spend time with, although I felt she was very naive, especially when it came to her ex-husband. The side kicks are wonderful, from co-workers to her actress mother and the mother's dog.
Honestly, my complaints feel like rookie mistakes. I certainly wouldn't mind spending more time with Tucker and her friends. I just hope that the plot has been better developed next time.
Some characters are just TSTL (too stupid to live).......2006-10-19
Tucker Sinclair was named after Sopie Tucker. This is not necessarily relevant information, and it certainly gives one no real insight into Tucker's character. It does say something about Tucker's mother, Pookie, who is off-stage but certainly a presence for much of False Profits.
Tucker is trying to make partner at Aames and Associates, "as a management consultant, a sprt of business doctor handling everything from financial facelifts to red-ink bypasses." She thinks she has a good shot at it, until one of her more unpleasant and obstreperous clients, Dr. Milton Polk, decides he wants his "group's eleven million dollars back, plus attorney's fees." As one might surmise, this does not bode well for Tucker's shot at partner. Life gets more interesting when she can't find a copy of the business plan she put together for the good doctor. It only crosses Tucker's mind that one of the other people up for partnership might be stabbing her in the back after she has pretty much worked through any other, however unlikely, alternative. And then Dr. Polk turns up very dead, drowned, with a hole in his forehead. His office staff is devastated and not very helpful, considering that Tucker's name is on some medical test results that Tucker doesn't ever remember having done.
In the meantime, her ex-husband Eric is insisting that he needs to talk to her about their relationship. Tucker, for reasons which may make sense to her but not to me, seems to think he wants her back. It is at this point in the book that I decide Tucker is way too naive to be doing what she's doing, either personally or professionally.
False Profits is an amusing book, once one accepts that Tucker needs a guardian. I had no trouble with the plot or the characterizations (other than Tucker). The love interest takes a while to make an appearance, even if the reader knows more than Tucker about what Eric is really looking to talk to her about; the love interest would be much more interesting if there were more of him earlier in the book.
Perhaps I've just read a few too many mysteries lately where the female detective doesn't have the business sense that God gave a turnip. And/or assumes that the man who used to be in her life wants to be there again, when any reasonable woman would know just how unlikely that was. Perhaps I just had a bad several days trying to get interested in what was going on in Tucker's life. For whatever reason, including that this may not be the best mystery ever written, I just couldn't get engaged by Tucker, didn't care if she ever figured out who killed Milton Polk, knew fairly early on who the bad guy was even though the only clue was the sheer predictability of it all . . . for whatever reason, I won't be in any hurry to read more of Patricia Smiley. If you enjoy naive young women who put themselves in danger, knowingly, and think that leaving a number on their cell phone will do for a back-up . . . go for it. I'd rather read Virgina Lanier for the fourth time.
Her dreams of success get diverted by lawsuits and murders .......2005-08-29
Tucker Sinclair has worked hard to be make a name for herself as a financial consultant at the firm of Aames & Associates. Tucker anticipates negotiating big deals and a partnership for herself. It goes horribly wrong when a financial contract written for Dr. Milton Polk and his dreams of his diagnostic testing facility go missing and he ends up dead. Tucker is suspended from work for a week. Tucker recently divorced, has her mother and her beloved dog living with her. Tucker struggles also with feelings for her ex-husband Eric. At the same time, she has to fend off attempts by her bitter Aunt Sylvia to take her beach house away from her. Tucker reluctant but determined to avoid jail time goes on the hunt to find out what happened to Dr. Polk. Being an inexperienced sleuth, she has to work her way out of some very awkward moments. A fun, well-written novel with potential as a future series.
A Fast Paced Mystery Adventure .......2005-03-31
Tucker Sinclair is a successful management consultant working in fast paced Los Angeles. A big 11 million dollar deal she's working on with a big name client goes awry and Tucker finds herself with a whole lot of blame pointing at her and a bullseye on her forehead.
Tucker begins a fast moving adventure of dead bodies, shady investors, annoying ex husbands and a cranky old aunt who is trying to take claim over Tucker's beach home over some bad family history.
The mysterious business plan gone bad takes on a life of its own and takes over Tucker's life sending her running all over town to solve this who done it before time runs out.
Patricia Smiley's first novel is sure to capture many fans cheering for Tucker Sinclair with False Profits. Readers will be hoping and waiting in anticipation for more.
Patricia Smiley's first novel, False Profits, packs a punch of memorable characters, a fast paced mystery adventure and a fantastic heroine.

The Names Have Changed, the Game Remains the Same.......2006-05-07
This is a story of the Bank of Commerce and Credit International, apparently the largest bank fraud in history. "False Profits: the Inside Story of BCCI," concludes that many aspects of the scandal remain shrouded in mystery.
BCCI was a privately-held bank that was a criminal enterprise from its inception. It bought political influence, did a brisk business with dictators and drug lords and the CIA.
Why was it necessary for an intelligence organization to run a bank? For drug running, money laundering, and arms-deal schemes, of course.
BCCI controlled a maze of subsidiaries and affiliates incorporated in several different countries No regulators had jurisdiction on a simultaneous consolidated basis, so entries could fool regulators and auditors by shell-game tactics.
BCCI and its allies had personal and financial ties to both the Bush and Clinton administrations. There were plenty of indicators that the funny-money game was being played at the highest levels of our government, including presidents and their closest advisors. The Justice Department went out of its way to hamper the investigation, and the most serious offenses were punished with innocuous plea bargains.
