Customer Reviews:
How could it cost $99 Dollars???.......2007-08-07
Please tell me that the price of this map has been entered wrong and that is is NOT really $99
Told by a resident to get this map, excellent purchase........2007-07-07
There are plenty of maps out there, this is the one my friend told me to get, he lives on Maui. My other friend and I planned to go biking on the Hana Highway, this map has lots of ideas for side trips, and close-up views of popular areas. Much more detail than the freebies at the tourist stops, up-to-date, colorful, easy to read, especially the topographical reference.
I Like Maps.......2007-04-13
This map and our Maui Trailblazer guide were essentials. Perfect combo for the drives we took circling this island.
Good for long-term visits.......2007-03-08
A detailed map that we didn't use once during our visit. However, I suspect that if we lived on Maui or our stay was longer than 9 days, we may have used it to poke around into the back waters of Maui. For a short term stay, it's overkill.
Great alongside travel guides.......2006-02-14
Used this map on our last two trips and found it to be a useful tool alongside our travel guides. The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars was because the map can be somewhat "busy." You probably could tour the island alone with the map, but a good guide like 'Maui - Mile by Mile' is perfect with this map.
Book Description
Recreational map for scuba divers, snorkelers, kayakers, hikers, bicyclists, boaters, surfers, tourists, and others who love Maui. Printed on waterproof, tear-resistant, permanently folded paper. Measures 4.25 x 7" when closed, opens to 14 x 21".
Side 1 shows Franko's Map of Maui with its beautiful mountains rising up from 120 miles of coastline in green shaded relief, with ocean blues descending in color the deeper you go away from the island. Maui's main roads and highways are detailed all around and through the island. The road map goes from Kapalua, Ka'anapali and Lahaina on the far western part of Maui, around the western mountains to Kahului and Wailuku, and then south to Kihei, Wailea and Makena. On the eastern side of Maui, the roads take you on the 37-mile uphill route to the very roof of the island, at Haleakala National Park -- some folks like to go up the mountain in the wee hours of the morning to catch the spectacular sunrise. The Road to Hana is detailed -- this is the famous, scenic drive and is certainly one of the most beautiful scenic drives anywhere in the world. The road starts in Pa'ia and ends in Hana, although most people like to go beyond to the wonderful 7 Pools of Ohe'o to frolic amidst waterfalls and deep swimming holes. Snorkeling is Maui's number one activity and this map beautifully shows it all off. Dive sites detailed include everybody's favorite, Molokini Island, where water visibility might exceed 200 feet. Other sites include Turtle Town, Olowalu, Kapalua Beach, and LaPerouse Bay. A handful of Maui's top surfing sites located and described.
Side 2 shows Franko's Map of Maui County. Details the rest of Maui County -- "The Friendly Isle," Moloka'i, and "The Private Isle," Lana'i. Molokai is shown from its desert-like western half, to its mountainous, jungle-filled eastern half, and from its southern string of ancient Hawaiian fish ponds to the historic Kalaupapa peninsula. Lanai is notable for its numerous fabulous dive sites from Turtle Haven in the northwest, to the famous southern spots of The Cathedrals, and Huopo'e Bay. Lanai is a common dive/snorkeling tour boat destination out of Lahaina on Maui. Side 2 shows a beautiful aerial photograph from straight overhead of Molokini Island, with the crescent shape of the island crater beautifully revealed. Details of dive sites such as Enenue, Tako Flats, and Garbonzo's Lair are shown.

Authoritative and complete - the essential map of Maui.......2002-01-30
I'm a geographer and a cartographer, have been to Hawaii many times, and have even taught geography courses there. Take my word for it - this is the map to have with you when you explore Maui. It gets the spelling right (most don't), shows all the important and interesting places, and isn't cluttered up with advertising and commercial pitches (like the rental car maps). Part of a series that covers all the major islands.
Nicely done!.......2001-07-17
This map is very colorful. It also shows the typography (I hope I have that spelled right)or high spots and low spots such as the volcanic craters, etc. The beaches and airports are marked very well and the insets are detailed enough to figure out where you actually are. Street names are included at the top of the map and various points of interest around the perimeter. I have it hanging in my kitchen as a constant reminder that this is where I will be retiring!

Choose Your Own Adventure.......2007-09-10
These books are fantastic - I have fond memories of them from my childhood. As a school teacher, they are a wonderful read aloud. I let the children vote everytime there is a choice. They think they're great!
Great reading for people of all ages.......2007-09-03
We have read Choose Your Own Adventure 1-6, and our 7 year old son, my husband & I were glued to every book. The books are well written, interesting & intriguing. Not too scary but gripping. We highly reccomend these books to everyone. They can be read & reread, a real plus.
NOT the original books.......2007-04-20
My children have been enjoying some of my old Choose Your Own Adventure books from the 80's, so when I saw this rerelease of several classic books for such a reasonable price, I bought it for them. Well, apparently R.A. Montgomery wasn't able to get the rights on the original illustrations, so he had a bunch of freelance designers from Thailand draw replacement pictures for each of them, and they are AWFUL. Not just 'different,' but shockingly, unignorably BAD -- they look like cartoons drawn carelessly by teenagers, with no sense of proportion, anatomy, lighting, or anything else. The drawings in "Mystery of the Maya" are not bad but most of the others are so terrible they render the books unreadable. Leaving them unillustrated would have been better than this. Find used copies of the originals (most of which are for sale cheap on Amazon) or just pick something else to read.
Paths Too Short.......2007-03-30
You make one or two choices and the book is over. They should only have a few endings and make each path longer.
My 9-year-old LOVES these.......2007-01-10
We bought these books for our son because we remembered how much we loved them at his age. They are much quicker reads than I remember, but he loves them, so they get 5 stars. One book takes him less than 45 minutes to get through. He hasn't gotten to the stage where he goes back and makes different choices yet, but I'm sure he'll become even more fond of them then.

Start here!.......2007-09-29
If you are new to choose your own adventure, I recommend starting with
these 4. They are the first in the new series, and are all individual
books. I am pretty sure they are all reprints, and the art is definitely
new, but they are a great place to start as they cover a wide range of
topics. The bottom line is kids will eat these books up, not just because
they are about great topics, with fun art and very well written but
because they get to choose. They get to pick where they go, what they do,
and all they while they are reading. A warning though, buy this box set
and you might have to by the next.
A classic collection returned.......2007-07-10
Choose Your Own Adventure collections have always been a part of the series, and carrying on that tradition is this collection of the first four books in the newly republished series.
If this is your first trip into CYOA, or are a long time fan coming back, this is collection has a lot to offer. The first four are a nice mix of adventure, mystery, and sci-fi and you get a good feel for the writing of author R.A. Montgomery. The stories have been updated for the times, which is to say the "You" character now has cell phones, GPS and the like. The art has also been redone, but continues to be of excellent quality and pertinent to the choices. Those choices, however, are still the same. They are yours.
There are also collection of 5-8 and 8-12. Six book collections are available as well, but if you are looking to get a started in choosing your own adventure, this collection is a great way to start.
Finally, on a personal note, its great to see the series back!
Warning: These are NOT the original books.......2007-04-21
Don't buy this set expecting a reprinting of the original 1978-1982 Choose Your Own Adventure books. The text has been revised, though the revisions are serviceable enough; but what's worse is that all of the illustrations have been replaced with hideously bad cartoons. Words cannot even express how amateurish and badly drawn these cartoons are, with no sense of proportion, anatomy, lighting, or composition; some appear smudged or to have eraser marks on them, and others have no relevance to the text they are accompanying. And since they're on nearly every page, it's impossible to ignore them.
The exception is The Abominable Snowman, where the pictures are of much better quality (though still not exactly compelling--it seems that the illustrators only read the first two sentences of each page before illustrating it, so that an ending in which the protagonist is killed by a tiger is illustrated by a picture of him slapping mosquitos, for example, because that's what he was doing in the first sentence of the passage.)
Buy used copies of the original books, or choose something else to read. "The Abominable Snowman" is the only one of the set I intend to keep.

Exciting!.......2007-01-06
This book is one of the more creative ones in the Choose Your Own Adventure Series. Basically, YOU are born to parents of two different planets and you have to figure out which planet YOU want to be your home planet. I think this book really stands out in the series. I can remember being especially fascinated by it as a child. Most children wonder about outer space and aliens at some point, and this book is fun for them to read. It brings in all sorts of fun characters including aliens and robots. For a child, I believe this book would be fantastic. It is definitely one of the more imaginative books in the series. The adventurous story brings me back to my childhood days of imagination where anything was possible.
More beyond than Space itself.......2005-01-04
This could be a strange book at times. But there is also a certain charm about it. There is more to the story than just space travel. It is more like a galactic quest through life as it exists in the deep past, distant future, physical and supernatural sense. There are a number of interesting and unusual endings in the book with some philosophy thrown in for good measure. There are also cross references of wars, epidemics, politics, and civilizations from alien planets to planet earth.
One would be frustrated at first that it seems impossible to fulfill the mission of reaching the planet of your citizenship as this appears to be the goal in the beginning of the story. Being diverted to help other planets, other space organizations, other beings, and even MISSION TRAINING seems to demean the goal of the story. But then again, that is the premise of the story, which makes it a really good read. R.A. Montgomery isn't known to be as good as his colleague, Edward Packard, but he did put forth good writing here. He managed to cram alot about life in the galaxy in 116 pages. Don't expect a lot of what is on the cover of the reissue (a corny Buck Rogers like scene of a laser battle) to be in the story though. Paul Granger's original, lush, colorful artwork is more suitable.
Not the best of the series.......1998-12-22
The "Choose Your Own Adventure" series was a great invention for kids, and the first 14 or so were very interesting. However, simply put, R.A. Montgomery is not very good at writing them, unlike his colleague Edward Packard. Arbitrary, preachy, and sometimes practically incoherent, his books are only for rabid fans of the genre.

Somewhat frustrating..........2005-04-01
You were born on a spaceship traveling between two galaxies. You now can select which planet, and therefore which galaxy, you will now be a citizen of. Which planet will you go to? What adventures will you have in getting there? Will you find either of them?
No likely. Space is full of black holes, wars and hostile races. Will you give up your search and join the Universe Governing Body to try to bring peace to the galaxies? Or will you pick a side to fight on, joining in the wars? Will you travel in time, explore new worlds or go to school?
Most of the 44 possible endings seem to be your death or some vague ending without any real meaning. I'm surprised that, as a kid, I kept trying to find the endings I wanted.

Book Description
A hilarious sci-fi comedy.
Walter Nutria, bored with high school in East Weston, is only too happy to enter the spaceship that descends from the sky one afternoon. Once inside, he learns he has been specifically sought out by the Lirgonians, a race of aliens who look like middle-aged men in footie pajamas, to act as their commander in their long-enduring feud with the Wotwots, who look like rutabagas with goatees and tentacles. Why Walter? Because of his meritorious sci-fi video rental record. But the Wotwots had the same idea and have recruited his friend Yselle Meridien, who has lately been renting on Walter's card, as their commander. Once the battle begins, things go absolutely haywire, and the two enemy races find themselves having to team up in search of their spaceships when they're stolen by the elusive Space Mice from Galaxy Four.
The jokes come fast and furious in this clever novel, which will have appeal for both devotees of the science-fiction genre and those with only a casual interest in distant planets and giant talking thumbs.
Customer Reviews:
This book was awesome!.......2007-06-18
I have read this book three times and I love it. It's really random and the aliens aren't as menacing as in a lot of science-fiction books. They actually kind of seem like kids, because they have almost no common sense. It flows along really well, too, and it seems like the kids in it are smarter than the aliens (they've been fighting a war for three hundred years and don't really know the actual reason). Almost anyone that likes science-fiction and has a sense of humor would like this book.
Hilarious.......2003-07-17
This is a very funny, very fun book. It's not as bizarre as the Hitchhiker's series, but just as, maybe more, funny. My class is going to love this book!
Science Fiction Breakthrough.......2002-12-09
The book "Beatnik Rudabagas From beyond the stars" is a classic Sci-Fi with hilarious twists on villans and normally scary or boring charecters. The story stays semi relistic while still being outrageous. It is an exciting book leading up to a somewhat funny and happy ending. Any one with a toch of humor would love this book. I reccomend it to 11yr olds on up. I give it five stars all around.
Eleanor Cameron Award Winner (Golden Duck).......2002-06-13
Our committee liked this book so well that we are giving it the Eleanor Cameron Award for Excellence in Children's Science Fiction.
It is very much like a younger version of Hitchhiker's Guide and should excite many readers.
Mixed-up Over Rutabagas.......2002-02-13
As A person of practicaly 13 I found this book fairly interesting, however I fond it hard to follow the plot. It seemed that the chapters seemed to jump around a lot. I couldn't seem to follow it that well. My friends and I talk about books though, and I highly recommended it to them. One read it from our school library and told me that it was well written, she loved it.
