Listen & Learn french ( CD Edition).......2007-10-15
Until now I have not received my products. Already it was conquered the time estimated of arrival.
And in the Internet consultation I could not have raised a report.
Can you help me?
just phrases, phrases, phrases - best bang for $10.......2007-05-02
I used this in conjunction with the Berlitz Essential French book to learn pronunciation/phrases and written French, respectively, in preparation for a 3-month organic-farm work-abroad stay in France. This combination turned out to be perfect. I had no background and couldn't conjugate or put sentences together, but Listen & Learn's rote memorization of standard phrases got me pronouncing and small-talking quickly. After 3 months in France, I could shoot the breeze with the barber.
PROs: Once you know that this is just a list of phrases, spoken once in English and once in (rather dramatic) French, you will probably agree that within this simple category it is mega hella awesome, and hella cheap. The overdramatic Francophone is difficult to imitate at first, but once you can mock him well, you'll be able to convey _real_feeling_ when you speak, bashful though you may be. It's rare to see personality and humor like this in the rush-hour-2-minute-learn-now-textbook-cramathon culture of other audio programs.
CONs: The French is native-speed and only uttered once (with space afterwards for your attempt). Two repetitions would have drilled it better and made this a five-star product. Also, upon closer examination, you will notice that 1. the booklet looks suspiciously like a xerox, and 2. the recordings come from analog tape (audiophiles will note the giveaway hiss and print-thru echo), dating it back to the 70s/80s. Actually, the inner cover reveals the source phrases to be from 1956. This just means that the phrases are a bit campy ("How should you like to dine?") and you will learn NO PHRASES related to the information age, i.e. internet, cell phones, etc. This is just a minor downside, but a major DISHONESTY on the part of Listen & Learn, who go to great lengths to modernize the packaging (outside of the box has a 2004 copyright) without modernizing the content.
HIGHLIGHTS: The Anglophone is a riot in general, but for maximum entertainment, listen to the first 2 seconds of "Numbers" (as many times as you can stand). Also, in the final "Restaurant" chapter, all of the phrases are lambasting the waiter for the mediocre soup, overcharging the bill, and ruining everything; the last phrase, however, is this: "La cuisine et le service étaient excellents!"
Don't Buy It!.......2006-11-10
Don't waste your money on "Listen and Learn French" - the "teacher" actually sounds like an old voice over from the 50's or 60's (and sounds kind of angry). I couldn't listen for more than 10 minutes - no value added. Spend the extra couple bucks for Drive Time French - those cd's are awesome!
french cd review.......2006-08-31
I really enjoy the french tapes, I listen to them on my headphones at work. I am studying abroad next year, and these cd's have helped me to learn easy conversation french.
Straightforward, Useful, No Gimmicks - Great Value.......2006-04-21
I've been listening to a number of French language audio CDs over the past year. It is a crowded field. I'm not complaining, because they are all good in different ways, but this is my current favorite. I have been listening to these two short CDs for weeks at 5-10 minute intervals driving my car. The 700 phrases are spoken in English and then repeated in French. The voices (male and female) that repeat the English phrases in French are very clear. The simplicity of the presentation will likely catch you off guard if you are used to listening to cutesy music or sound effect gimmicks in other language packages. This straightforward presentation is precisely why the material is easy to listen to again and again. It is what it is: Useful English phrases and their French equivalency. There is the obligatory booklet, but it repeats all the words and phrases exactly as they are heard on the two discs. So it is very easy to check what you have heard later on (as I need to). The packaging is slim and easy to slip into my jacket side pocket. When I have mastered these phrases I won't be reading Camus or Proust, but I will be appreciative. Maybe the producers should consider a sequel.

The Best Review Kit Out There!!!.......2002-08-11
All right, the first kit definatly was not perfection, but this one is. I say review kit, because it really is a review. You need to have gone over the first kit, or have some other experience with the French language, to actually appreciate what this kit has to offer.
I saw that another reviewer said that they speak much faster in this kit. Well, yes, that is true, but it is very clear to me. Unlike the other kit, where you'd frequently hear background noises, in this kit you hear none. Well, at least not as much as the other.
Most of what you'll find in this kit actually is review. They don't teach you a lot of new concepts, but what you really need is a review if you just finished up the first kit of this series.
Also, they received a lot of user-input on how to improve this kit, and I have to tell you, it worked. One of the things that I enjoy is that they now have more practice with speaking the language. After every dialogue, they give you "Travaux Pratiques", it's a set of exercises which help you practice the material you've gone over in the last dialog. At the end of Travaux Pratiques, you get a thing sort of like Your Turn To Speak, well, it's exactly like that, and it allows you to speak the language, something desperatly needed in the first edition of the series.
Anyway, this kit is very great, and it will put you at the head of your French class. I just started high school, I'm taking French I, and I am ahead of everyone else by far! I could probably move ahead to French II, or perhaps even French III. But again, if you really want to take advantage of this kit, by the first one too, it is a MUST.
Excellent.......2000-03-30
A very useful course to get a real feel for the sound and use of the language. Not for beginners; you need to have worked with the basic course for awhile to get the real benefit. Is much more realistic than the normal "stilted text studio recorded" scripts.

NEVER try without MASTERING the 1st book.......2001-02-24
This kit is VERY advanced and pretty good to gain fluency in French. That is, if you already mastered the first lesson....IT IS ADVANCED. I couldn't understand what they were saying on account of it was so fast. It's really still a good course, just advanced. I'd recomend it to anyone that wants to continue their French vocabulary as long as the basics are there.

Customer Reviews:
Great for intermediate learners! .......2006-05-06
This review refers to the CDs: I have about 6 years of junior high/high school French, so I would consider myself intermediate but by no means fluent. The CDs were great in helping me with my pronunciation and listening skills (as an Anglophone my pronunciation is horrible), and I was able to review one lesson a day during my daily car commute. I like the fact that the speakers are actual French speakers, although the background noises were indeed distracting and made it hard to hear at times.
The problem with other CDs I've tried were that they repeated boring conjugations that would never stick. At least with learning from this CD if you misconjugate, the listener would at least understand what you mean. This CD was actually fun to listen to.
Hope you have a tape player!.......2003-10-30
I used this program in conjunction with a non-credit French course taught at my local community college. I think the program is very good because the recordings are obviously of real French speakers in their native situations. It is almost impossible to understand some of them; they speak so fast, the words are all slurred together. But I know that when I travel in France, I will be better prepared to understand native speakers, for having listened to the tapes over and over! Also, I like that they record even small children on the tapes, and that's encouraging, because they don't always speak correctly (I am not the only one!). My major complaint about the program is that it uses cassette tapes, which are very outdated! I had a hard time even finding a cassette player in my home, and I only have a CD player in my car. Its very hard to find a place to listen. Then, you have to keep rewinding the tape back to relisten, and its the pits to find the exact spot where the last unit or lesson began. If they put it on CD, it would be great!
It's a great kit, but.......2002-08-06
This is a great kit, a great way to get started on French, but it definatly isn't thorough. First of all, let me tell you that if you expect to take full advantage of this kit, you should have a partner or at least someone who speaks French. The kit doesn't let you practice enough with speaking the language yourself.
But, it does help you a lot with understanding the language. The conversations on the tape are authentic, which lets you hear French as it is usually spoken. It can be a little bit fast, but that just helps you to understand French better when you actually listen to a French person.
The kit also teaches you a little about other French speaking countries and their customs, which is great. Additionally, it also teaches you some about grammar, which is a must in any language.
I bought this kit(and the Plus kit, which I will start soon), as a way to get myself ahead in my French class I'll be taking when I get back to school. So if you're a student and planning on taking French, then this kit is DEFINATLY for you. It doesn't make you perfect, but it should make your first year of French much easier, since most of it will be a review...

Good idea with a major flaw..........2002-01-11
If you're looking for French resources to learn the language with your children, I can't recommend French For Beginners without reservation. Many of the songs are cute and catchy (with the exception of the highly irritating alphabet song), and teach common vocabulary like numbers, food, colors, days of the week, animals, and greetings. One side is mostly French to English; the other side has the same songs - English to French.
However, the children on the recording (with one possible exception) are NOT native French speakers, and don't even sound as if they were well coached. The pronunciation of many sections is so bad, it sounds like a person with no knowledge of French saying the words for the first time. This ruined it for me - catchy tunes are of no benefit if they can't pronounce the words right! What a shame, because this would be a lovely resource otherwise.

"Claypitts, Pearl of the Prairie... it's the kind of town you drive right through without noticing... it's where we live... three not-exceptional daughters and one exasperated mother." So starts Carol Patterson's story, the story of a 15-year-old middle child who longs for a life less ordinary, one outside the boundaries of Claypitts and her mother's expectations. Carol has always been a responsible, stoic soul, helping her single working mom by caring for younger sister Liz and steering clear of older sister Ellen's bad habits and reputation. Carol lives her life safely in the middle--never too sad, but never very happy, either. It is only when Ellen upsets the balance of the small family by getting pregnant and moving to a home for unwed mothers that Carol finds herself taking thrilling risks like dating the school bad boy and sneaking away in the middle of the night to visit Ellen. After years of turning away from problems so they couldn't hurt her, Carol suddenly realizes that she must experience life's pain in order to better recognize its joys.
This debut novel by legendary young adult author Richard Peck--back in print after 27 years--is a quiet story whose strength is in its timelessness. Today's teens will quickly recognize their own conflicting desires as they identify with Carol's need to stay safe yet at the same time explore new territory. Don't Look and It Won't Hurt foreshadowed Richard Peck's brilliant writing career and makes for a thoroughly enjoyable read, whether you're diving in fresh or revisiting an old friend. (Ages 12 to 15) --Jennifer Hubert
Book Description
"Out at the city limits there's this sign that says WELCOME TO CLAYPITTS, PEARL OF THE PRAIRIE, and if you'd believe that, you'd believe anything."Sixteen-year-old Carol Patterson is a girl in the middle: in the middle of her sisters, in the middle of her adolescence, in the middle of her family's problems. It is the early seventies and the world is in turmoil, but hardly anything from the outside ever seems to creep in to effect the Pattersons, who live in half a house at the wrong end of town. But there is turmoil enough in Carol's own life. The family is barely getting by on her mother's waitress salary. Carol's bookishness and shabby clothes make her an outcast. Then Carol's older sister gets pregnant.Still, in the midst of it all there is hope: Carol's first fledgling romance; her unexpected friendship with the preacher's daughter. And suddenly a door opens, providing Carol with a glimpse of the world outside Claypitts and a glimpse of her own inner strength.Originally published in 1972, Don't Look and It Won't Hurt was Richard Peck's first novel. It was adapted for the movie Gas/Food/Lodging in 1992.

Fighting Against the Odds.......2007-08-02
She has no father to speak of. Her mother, who works hard but gets nowhere, is skilled at trying to be in charge, but not at being close or understanding. Her older teenage sister, who does pretty much as she pleases, turns into an unwed mother. Only her little sister is close to her.
Carol doesn't particularly like her town or her school or herself, but you'll find her open and honest and her story very moving.
[Realistic fiction suitable for junior high to high school.]
Excellent Story!.......2002-09-20
"Don't Look And It Wont Hurt" by Richard Peck is a very good book!
It tells about a girl that is very poor and doesn't have many friends and her mom works all the time and she feels very alone.
The book is very good because it is based on a true story and in the book the girl tries to escape her terrible life but she cant it is a very extraordinary book for many readers
Read it as a kid and still love it.......2001-10-17
I read this book when I was bearly a teenage and fell in love with it. Every teenager goes through the same feelings and worries Carol does about "fitting in". This book helps to show that growing up we all have the same worries and fears, and the only person you have to worry about liking you is you. If you can like who you are, then what everyone else thinks about you is meaningless. It is definitely worth reading. I still have my copy and will pull it out once and a while to read it again. When my children get older, I want them to read it too!
Don't Look and it Wont Hurt.......2000-03-03
A readers first impression of Don't Look and it wont Hurt by Richard Peck, is if you are a teenager, you could identify with the normal problems teenagers do. This is a book of suspense and courage. This is a great book and I encourage you to read it. Claypitts, known as the "Pearl of the Prairie," is where the Patterson's live. Liz the youngest, Carol in the middle, and the oldest is Ellen. Claypitts is the kind of town you drive right through and don't even notice. Even thought it is small it still has its share of problems. Kids using drugs and teenagers getting pregnant. Carol Patterson is a girl in the middle; in the middle of her sisters, in the middle of her adolescence, and in the middle of her families many problems. At Carol's high school her shyness and ragged clothes maker her outcast. When Carol and Liz get together her shyness goes away. They let their imaginations take them places they've never been before. An unexpected turn happens in Carol's life when she finds out her older sister Ellen is pregnant. Through it all Carol changes in a way she has never changed before. Don't Look and it won't hurt; in my opinion is a great book. Anyone could read it even if you aren't the best of readers. It has a satisfying ending which you will love. Don't Look and it Wont Hurt will touch you with its honesty and sensitivity.
Tough life her sister gets pregnant, but she's poor !!!!!!!.......1999-10-19
I found this book to be nothing but good. It was very good, and even though the ending was like shortened it's ok. The book is about a girl who's family is not to rich and her sister gets pregnant. The teenage girl Carol is like and outsider and is not popular at all. She later on meets a boy and becomes very close. She now is enteracting with other people and actually has friends. Once you start reading this book you won't be able to put it down. At the end you find your self wishing the author had written more, I for one read slow so that I could still have it iguess I was quite attatched. You'll enjoy it! I reccomend this book to everyone young and old!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
