Amazon.com Audiobook Review

Look ma, no textbooks! The Learn in Your Car series treats you like a child--in the best possible way--starting with one-word phrases ("please," "good-by"), counting exercises, and simple nouns ("bus," "train") designed to imitate a child's learning process. First you hear the words in English, then they are repeated slowly in clear, unaccented pronunciations. The method is extremely effective for those who don't know a thing, or for those who want to brush up by testing themselves when the English words are spoken. The tapes emphasize the building blocks of communicating in a foreign country rather than rote phrases that only apply on the tape and not in real-life exchanges. Level 1 painlessly covers basic verb forms, essential prepositions, near future and past tenses, as well as shopping, hotel reservations, and other travel-related situations. The series includes French, German, Italian, Russian, Japanese, and Spanish in three levels that can be purchased individually or in boxed sets. Each level contains two 90-minute cassettes (or CDs) and an accompanying booklet (not for use behind the wheel) with helpful explanations and scripts for the lessons.

I found the first set, "level one", of the Learn in Your Car German series to be an excellent refresher to basic German travel and shopping words. Years ago I had two years of German in my US high school, but I struggled with the language. I bought this first CD in order to relearn enough German to get around Germany and Switzerland, and ended up listening to the CD both on my 1-hour weekend commutes and while jogging (after ripping the CDs into mp3 format and adding them to my work out setlist).

The CD really does start off with very basic words and phrases, focusing a bit more on travel related words like bus stop, train station, how much does it cost, etc. I honestly think that people whom have not taken German will be able to pick up on the basic phrases, but that people whom speak some German already will find these first 3 disks rather slow.

There are some words included in the lessons that I've never had the chance to use. Furthermore, some of the words are a bit out of date, such as references to the Deutsch Mark. It would have been nice for that track to be updated to talk about the Euro. I also found that the disk and my German language background did not prepare me for situations such as a local offering to buy me a drink!

The CD set comes with a nice, small book. Sadly, while I've found it easy to listen to the CD again and again while jogging and to a lesser degree while driving, I've never found the time to read the book while listening to the CD. I do feel it would help both my ability to speak German and more importantly, my ability to read the language.

I liked this set enough to buy the level 2 set. Furthermore, I found the way the lessons were broken up very useful in skipping tracks and focusing on the vocabulary I felt I'd need.

Don't buy this CD. I just bought it used for cheap but it still wasn't worth it because it is outdated with lessons on German Franks, etc. It also spends way too much time on individual words instead of basic conversations. I was looking for a CD that would prepare me enough for a two-week trip and these lessons are over the place. I felt there were too much train and train station phrases, they even had the phrase "I'd like a room with a bathroom," which I feel is highly unnecessary these days. I've tried Pimsleur's CDs and they were more practical.

5 out of 5 stars Stop listening to radio commercials, start learning German!.......2005-01-22

I just bought and started this set yesterday, and it is *exactly* what I wanted. After reading numerous reviews of this set and the same series in other languages, I was convinced this was the way to go. My only regret is that I didn't buy the complete 3-level set. I can tell I am going to want to continue once I've mastered level 1.

There is an accompanying CD that features an interview with a laguage expert about how to learn languages, but I couldn't wait and started on disc 1. Right away, you are learning German like children learn their native language -- one word, then two words, then short sentences.

I do recommend starting by sitting with the book once. It helps to see the spelling of the words as you listen to the German speaker say them. Not every word's spelling is apparent in my head as I listen, so I found this much more helpful for remembering the words and for overall understanding and pronunciation.

German and English are both Germanic languages, so the language makes sense. It's a very descriptive language and you already know quite a few words from watching war movies or Hogan's Heroes on tv. (Achtung, bitte! Das ist verboten.) The most difficult part will be pronunciation, so I will practice a lot to avoid having a bad American accent as much as possible.

When I was a kid in the early 70s, my family moved to Brazil for a year. There was no system to teach kids Portuguese and my brothers and I really suffered from not speaking the language. Now that I anticipate moving to Germany for a few years, I will do whatever I can to teach my children German as well. I plan to purchase Learn in the Car German for Kids, so we can all learn together. Then we'll go from there.

Bottom line: If you want to learn German easily on your own and maximize the value of your time in the car, get this set!

3 out of 5 stars Good content, but too quiet.......2002-03-03

Decent content, well organized. Unfortunately, the audio level is so low that you have to crank the volume way up. Forget that you did that (or fail to react fast enough when the track ends) and you blow your ears out when the next track starts.

2 out of 5 stars Strangers in Blood.......2006-06-11

This book has a high "fog factor" and is difficult to read. It uses academic jargon and long sentences. The structure is complex and confusing. That is not to say that the book is inconsequential; indeed, the subject matter is quite important. It is simply difficult to access it through this book.

The back cover accurately describes the book as looking systematically at the families and offspring of the upper echelon of the Hudson Bay Company and the North West Company. Unfortunately, this was a male-dominated business and a male-dominated period in history. Men kept the written records. The author of "Strangers in Blood" relies heavily on anecdotal accounts of individuals, complete with many direct quotes. Thus, this is a book that follows the men of the fur trade. Their wives and offspring become adjuncts. The book partially compensates for this by providing information on societal pressures within the fur trade, as well as in Canada and England at the time. It also addresses the policies of the fur companies relative to dependents.

The book characterizes and contrasts family connections in the Hudson Bay Company and the Northwest Company. The presentation is roughly chronological from the late 1700 to the mid 1800s. The 1821 merger of the two companies is a focal point. Chapters and subchapters move back and forth between the two companies; as well as between various topics of gender and types of family relationships. The focus is on individuals, with every page containing a confusing array of proper names. The names of key individuals (men) reappear constantly until the reader longs for a wall chart to keep them straight. The author has even provided a few small pieces of such a chart and they are helpful.

One comes away with the feeling that the men of the fur trade took more responsibility for their families than one might expect. They usually tried to place their offspring, both male and female, in a position to start a life of their own. That included at least some education; an apprenticeship for men, and marriage for women. Fewer men stayed committed to the mothers of their children but some of the relationships were life-long.

From the early 1820s on, one man, George Simpson, had great influence over the fur trade and the people involved with it. He directed the Hudson Bay Company through the merger with the Northwest Company and for forty years afterward. He influenced the tenor of the fur trade and everything connected with it. Ms Brown shows his impact to be more negative than positive. Simpson, the clergy, and English women all arrived on the scene at about the same time. The result was increased racism, emphasis on class, and moral disapproval of "country marriages." These semi-formal unions with Indians and mixed-bloods were prevalent in the fur trade up until that time. The problems of integrating the descendents of the fur traders into society continue in Canada today.

Finally, I even want to complain about the title. "Strangers in Blood" is an English legal term for relationships that exist "in blood" but the law refuses to admit as legitimate. This book is about a much broader range of relationships. The author recognizes the problem in the final chapter. Someone in the publishing process should have insisted on a better title.

5 out of 5 stars Characters to care about!.......2007-08-13

I found Sanchona's first book "A Family Of Strangers" to be an engrossing and enthralling read...I found myself caring deeply about the characters and their travails to the point that I wondered still about those characters who left the story. Kate is but a teenager when she is falsely accused by a British Nobleman who has her shipped off to a penal colony in Austrailia...how she wends her way and carves a life for herself and those for whom she cares proved to be a story that left me hoping that Sanchona will quickly supply us with another fine tale and another, and another....

                    5 out of 5 stars A Gripping Historical Piece!!.......2007-07-06

                    Sanchona has done it!!!

This historical novel follows young Kate from a prison cell in England, to an uncompromising ending.

I cringed in horror at the brutality she suffered and i cheered her triumphs. I also now wonder what kangaroo meat tasted like. ;-)

This novel reads quickly, is intertwined with full and interesting characters, and opened up a whole period in time I had only vaguely heard of.

I am anxiously waiting for more of Sanchona's work!

5 out of 5 stars A Heart Filling Historical Tale of one Girls Life... .......2007-04-04

After finally receiving my first copy of "A Family of Strangers" I could not put it down. For such a young woman going through what she had to survive was terrifying and exciting. Page after page as the ships swam out to sea so did my own mind.
This book takes you to places you could never dream about or even would like too. You will go through many emotions at once feeling ever moment out that our dear main character Kate O'Neal, goes through.

I can say that Ms. Sanchona has out done her self in this very book. Feeling the environment as if you were almost their. Sometimes not knowing or knowing what's there but unable to stop the scenes that are written out already.
If you do truely love to read historian novels I highly suggest this wonderful novel. Filled with compassion, horror, love, survival, and one girls life in Australia set around 1793. The Family of Strangers.

                    5 out of 5 stars A Delightful Debut Story.......2007-03-25

Sanchona's debut novel is a wonderful "sneaker," meaning it is like a secret that is both entertaining and one to be cherished by all ages. Kate O'Neal, because she is a moral young woman with survival instincts is subjected to a life as an outcast, a convict; as the pages turn, we see Kate's life, thanks to Sanchona's clever writing, proceed in rapid order; a chronology of events depicting Kate's growth that will charm the reader. It is this quality of Sanchona's writing that also will capture and transport the reader into the 1793-1802 period. This delightful story is a gift for the reader. Thank you, Sanchona.

5 out of 5 stars Exciting and Engrossing Debut Novel.......2007-03-16

Family of Strangers, the debut novel by Sanchona, has it all: lust, love, despair, hope, injustice, justice, hardship, and ease. Kate O'Neal, an innocent girl, matures into a woman through a series of incredible hardships. Only her determination to survive allows her to endure life as a convict shipped to the penal colonies of Australia.

Reduced to being a sex slave, she begs to be sent to a remote farm when her abusive owner nearly kills her. He agrees only because he thinks she is dying and doesn't want to be bothered with a body to dispose of. But instead of dying, Kate forms her new family with the convicts assigned to the farm and regains her strength.

Her second owner chooses to not abuse Kate physically, but eventually leaves her an emotional wreck.

Sanchona expertly pulls together all the elements of Kate's story with intriguing secondary characters, continuous action, and vivid descriptions, all the while maintaining historical accuracy.

Family of Strangers is a "must-read" for fans of historical fiction.

In these eight short stories Lillian Beckwith packs in a rich cast of characters and seductive Highland settings. In the title story Catriona McRae embarks on married life and learns a closely guarded secret from her mother-in-law. 'The Banjimolly' features a witch - and two bottles of whisky. 'Because of an Elephant' concerns an eccentric laird's wife. A boy and his adored collie dog, Meg, are the subjects of 'The Last Shot'. Each story is beautifully and affectionately told.

I read the entire book last night; couldn't put it down. All the stories are compelling and thought provoking. My favorites were 1. A young boy has a new family member who ruins his relationship with his sheepdog, soon after loosing his mother 2. A spinster teacher takes her 3 month summer vacations in the Hebrides imagining herself in love and 3. A young lady with lovely manners finds help for her broken down car in the most unexpected place. I was captivated by the wonderful characters, human and animal, as portrayed in the Scottish style Ms.Beckwith is so adept with. It's too bad her books are so difficult to find.

Since the back cover description is already included on this page, I'll skip straight to my review.

Though this book is part of a series, it stands perfectly well on its own (I never read any of the other books in the Bride's Bay series and I was not at all confused reading this book).

This book, which is in the Supperromance line, read more like an Intrigue novel. Which is fine if you like that, but I'm not much of a fan of the Intrigue line. I read romance for romance, and I find the intrigues focus more on the mystery than on the romance.

That being said, the mystery and suspense was very well executed in this book, but the romance aspect of it left a lot to be desired. But the plot twist in the middle was so unexpected that it kept me reading, and the conclusion of this book was exciting.

While not a keeper, this was enjoyable for a one-time read. If you're a fan of the Intrigue line, then you'll probably like this. If you're not, then you may or may not like it.
