Customer Reviews:
Not so great.......2007-06-08
I wanted less ideas and more actual words to write in cards. If I have to think it up myself, why do I need a book? I'm already thinking it up myself now. I wanted something more like lists of choices of things to say in cards for each occasion. This book gives a few for each occasion. Not enough, in my opinion.
Nice book to have on hand........2007-01-05
Very cute book with good advice for writing notes.
For Sincere Expressions In Writing Those Notes........2005-11-28
Written by a past president of the American Society of Journalists and Authors, there is a new (updated and expanded) volume of this little book informing us on the importance of sending personal notes and giving ideas of how to go about it. "There are certain general guidelines which apply to every occasion." The right words are readily accessible if you know how to find them.
"Good notes are gestures to celebrate, commemorate, and nuture relationships between people. They're about connecting and communicating and saying "I care." Quotations can be used to make a significant statement for the send, but it's important to choose those which suits the occasion or person and reflects you as well. "It's not what you say; it's how you say it." Limit advice. Give it only of it means something and represents wisdom gleaned from your own experience.
"When you write...there is an enormous sense of satisfaction. You feel 'when I write, I speak a whole different language...it's as if a poetic part of me seems to spill out." You don't have to write a lot to say a lot. This communications etiquette expert includes forms to use for sympathy notes, celebrations (consider the occasion) and notes just to say "You touched my life."
We're all human and make mistakes. "A quick, sincere apology can soothe hurt feelings, heal a rift, and strengthen your relationship." Apology is a good device to free the person who offers it, but it must be accepted by the person you may have offended. "It's best to apologize in person, on the phone, or in a note in the mail. But...e-mail is okay." It removes the awkwardness of apologizing, acts as a "buffer" and allows the writer to say exactly what is neeeded without interruption."
Florence Isaacs gives proper protocol for e-mail and the occasions when it is accepted. She has also written BUSINESS NOTES: PERSONAL NOTES THAT BUILD PROFESSIONAL RELATIONSHIPS, MY DEEPEST SYMPATHIES, and HERE'S TO YOU (TOAST OR TRIBUTE), 2002. The 2005 edition of this handbook has just been made available. If you need a bit of help saying the right thing at the right time, check this one out.
90% How To and only 10% samples.......2004-10-14
Although the sample notes were very good, they could have incorporated many more samples instead of the How To's and Scenario Set-ups necessitating the Notes.
oodles of concise, eloquent examples.......2003-04-20
At first I thought this might be too simplistic a guide to social and personal notes, then I found myself getting choked up in the chapter on "Writing Notes for Difficult Moments." The author is straightforward, friendly, and sensible, and she blends sensitivity with emotion in just the right mix, facing illness, AIDS, cancer, and impending death with clarity and compassion. She also gives snappy suggestions for graduation, holiday, and congratulatory notes, and devotes additional attention to writing to children and teenagers. The book gives such heartfelt, meaningful examples of short notes that if you keep a copy on your writing desk you need never be at a loss for words again.

Truly a Delight.......2007-09-05
My first introduction to Kris Radish's writing was Sunday List of Dreams, which inspired me to check out her earlier writings. What more can I say than "Dancing Naked at the Edge of Dawn" was truly a delight! And inspired me to read her other books!!
Dancing Naked at the Edge of Dawn.......2007-08-13
This book was a joy to read......hope Kris Radish will always find the time to write.....and entertain us.
And Everyone Lived Happily Ever After...........2007-07-16
What I first accepted as gradual spiritual awakening became, after a few chapters, somewhat cloying. By the end, it had moved firmly into a fairy tale, while still trying to be literature. My, my, what a perfect self-actualizing world is out there--just beyond our fingertips.
Chic Book.......2007-06-20
Had to read this horror for my book club. An annoying convoluted story. Unrealistic in every aspect. If you love the "I'm a victim" mentality, BUY this book. If you are emotionally well balanced AVOID it like the plague!
Dancing Naked at the Edge of Dawn.......2007-01-16
Excellent book, as are all Kris Radish's! This is a book every women should read. Ms Radish has an incredible knack to put into words our innermost thoughts & emotions. Some of it will make you giggle, laugh out loud, gasp in awe & shed tears you've forgotten how to shed! Please gals get out there and buy this book, you won't regreat a second of it!

Beverly Jenkins can write.......2007-09-23
I can't help it. I love Beverly Jenkins. She truly knows how to write. Whether it's historical romance or contemporary romance she knows how to tell a story. I can't say enough about her. She's awesome. I love how she ties in her historical characters to the present characters, that makes it even better to me. I have almost all of her books and I love them all. Keep it up Beverly.
The Edge of Dawn.......2007-05-14
Why have I just found this author. I accidently ordered this book and instead of returning it, I read it. Her stories pull you in and don't let go until you finish the book. Fantastic read! Now I have to order the rest of her books.
The Edge of Dawn.......2007-05-13
This is Beverly Jenkins at her best.
Saint and Narice were tough yet believable characters.
I found myself wishing that the book would not end.
Once again - brilliant!.......2006-11-30
Brilliant, brilliant, brilliant! Beverly Jenkins captured the essence of the mysterious, handsome and sexy Saint. Narice made a spunky heroine. This book is like a well laid out AA James Bond plot. Would love to see this in the film or tv media.
The Edge of Dawn.......2006-11-02
I loved this book and every book that Beverly Jenkins has written.

Book Description
Distributed by the University of Nebraska Press for Richard Altschuler & Associates, Inc./ Gordian Knot Books
On the Cutting Edge presents a series of true stories providing the first account of many of the major programs and projects that have made the last sixty years an era of remarkable progress in the aerospace arena. Robert F. Brodsky, an internationally known scientist, engineer, and teacher, brings a unique perspective to this book, since in each of the world-changing events discussed, he was a firsthand observer or participant. Written in an accessible style, Brodsky’s account begins with the start of the computer and atomic ages and progresses chronologically through the subsequent ages of guided missiles and space.
Through a series of interrelated narratives, readers learn about the conquest of the sonic barrier, why the space age started when it did, details of a rescue from a space station, how astronautics became a legitimate academic discipline, the inevitable rise of the hydrogen economy spurred by fusion, and the great aerospace events of the past century. On the Cutting Edge also includes descriptions of little-known historical events, such as the use of the atom bomb by the United States in Mexico, and of the many technological developments of the 1960s that are just now coming to fruition.
Customer Reviews:
A Tale Well Told.......2007-07-22
Very interesting and entertaining set of career experiences as told by one of the greatest engineer's ever. Probably not for everyone, but anyone who has been a part of the Aerospace industry would enjoy the telling of Dr. Bob's career. Well writen, articulate and informative. I purchased four more copies for gifts to young engineers that might write something similar in 50 or so years.
An engaging chronicle of deadly weapons, technological marvels, and the quirky human personalities .......2007-05-08
Written by engineer, educator, and arms race/spacecraft design pioneer Dr. Robert F. Brodsky, On the Cutting Edge: Tales of a Cold War Engineer at the Dawn of the Nuclear, Guided Missile, Computer and Space Ages is a collection of true tales of the author's professional experiences. Active in the atomic and space race from 1950 to 1988, and not really retired up to even the present day, Brodsky gives an insider's view of everything from the creation and fixing of the first externally carried A-Bomb (the Mark 7) to the inception of the Space Age to how astronautics became an accredited curriculum to Brodsky's visions of a hydrogen-fuel based economy in the future. An engaging chronicle of deadly weapons, technological marvels, and the quirky human personalities behind the military and space age science that transformed the modern world, accessible to readers of all backgrounds and highly recommended.
a notable pioneer.......2007-01-15
The book is a collection of anecdotes and snippets from Brodsky's long professional life, commencing during World War 2 and proceeding past the end of the Cold War. He gives an insider's look at what it was like to work in the American defense industry. Notably the aerospace milieu of southern California. But also in the nuclear weapons program at Sandia, New Mexico. Having worked briefly at Los Alamos, but decades after he was at Sandia, his accounts brought back fond memories of New Mexico.
He was also involved in some of the earlier postwar uses of computers. Like programming ENIAC for the first Computational Fluid Dynamics calculations. A total dinosaur of a machine by current standards. But truly cutting edge at the time.
There is a brief mention of wind tunnel tests he did in Pasadena, Los Angeles. How times change. That wind tunnel building is now the south campus of the Arts Center College of Design. I was there recently for a reception. Few of the current students appreciate the history of that building, and its crucial contributions to the US war effort during World War 2, and later in the Cold War.

Book Description
It would have been a perfect crime if one small boy on Holly Island hadn't snuck out at dawn to play at the food of Lindisfarne Castle and stumbled on Jon MacLean's body. If he hadn't prevented the murderer from retrieving one clue, no one would have
Customer Reviews:
A very complex mystery with a lot of suspects.......2003-11-18
I give the book 4 stars rather than 5 primarily because I had trouble keeping track of the many characters and the geography -- just way too much to follow . But I decided not to bother figuring out "who dun it" (although a shrewd guess halfway through turned out to be correct) and just enjoy the trip.
The plot involves the death of a man who was greatly loved but had a few enemies as well -- an upper class man who had returned from World War II a changed man, who became a Presbyterian minister and married an American pianist. He is found dead on Holy Island, apparently the victim of an accident, but there are circumstances that make those close to Reverend McLean question whether it was really an accident or murder. Ben Reese, an American archivist with a skill for solving mysteries, has already been called in to make an inventory of saleable items at a castle in Scotland owned by Reverend McLean's best friend, so he is asked to poke around and see if there is enough evidence to go to the police and ask for the case to be reopened.
The strength of the book is in the literary skill of the author, although some of the dialogue seemed a bit to lyrical for the characters. This book kept me reading and wanting to know "who dun it." If you like Scottish settings, you'll probably like this book, although be warned, you're not going to read this book in one evening.
Very very good!.......2001-02-01
Some of the best new mystery fiction coming out today. I'm glad to see the adventures of Ben Reese moving forward--unlike most other modern 'mysteries,' this series doesn't rely on blood and guts or sex between the characters to keep the novel moving along--the mystery is the point of the book, and mystery is what you get. The plot is well thought out, and the clues well placed.
Sally does it again.......2000-05-19
She informed me and delighted me again!
Intriguing plot and characters. A fine setting. And a decent mystery to boot!
I had never thought of Scotland as a possible travel destination. Maybe after her depiction I might consider it. Not that she romanticizes it, she obviously just loves it because it is lovable. Plus there were so many amusing and beguiling Scots that I had the pleasure of meeting. Not to mention the depths of the human heart that I had to ponder when reading this (I thought I knew who the murderer was, but I really didn't want to believe it was who I thought it was--so I had to ponder my own heart's depth as well).
I rarely reread mysteries, but I will return to this one again sometime. There's more to this than I could get on one time through.
A surreal atmospheric mystery.......1999-12-13
In 1961, Jonathan MacLean is a minister in the Scottish Church. He is happily married to the woman he loves and owns the ancestral estate Kilgarth. His best friend, Lord Alexander Chisholm, owns Balnagard Castle. The two buddies plan to take their annual trip together, which consists of roaming the countryside wherever their instincts lead them to travel. However, Jonathan dies from anaphylaxis reaction to bee venom.
Alex believes that someone deliberately murdered his friend as the bees were found inside Jonathan's picnic basket. Alex is happy that another friend, intelligence officer Ben Reese is coming to Balnagard to appraise his heirlooms. When Ben arrives, he agrees to investigate Jonathan's death. Ben soon finds several viable suspects, but never anticipated that the killer might want to make him the next victim.
Although the story line occurs less than four decades ago, there remains a surreal atmosphere, as if the events occurred in a previous century. The plot is compelling as PRIDE AND PREDATOR focuses on a monster wearing the respectable mask of sane civility that fools everyone except the likable hero. Sally Wright has the right stuff as she shows her story telling abilities to turn a mid-twentieth century who-done-it into a grand novel.
