Book Description

A truly innovative and enjoyable way to learn Japanese-based on manga.

Like the original Japanese in MangaLand, the second volume in the series combines the phenomenal popularity of manga with language instruction to make learning Japanese easier and a lot more fun than with traditional approaches. Japanese in MangaLand Vol. 2 helps even beginning students master the
basics of conversational Japanese with fifteen lessons including drills, the patterns of Japanese grammar and more than 360 kanji characters to assist in the learning process. Eleven of these lessons cover such grammar topics as intransitive/transitive verbs, particles, honorific expressions, and
even dialects and proverbs.

The four conversational lessons will prove invaluable to readers traveling to Japan by teaching them phrases and expressions to use at airports, hotels, shops and restaurants. Another new feature in this second volume is the culture notes section, which provides insight into life in Japan
today.

5 out of 5 stars Finally! A course that focuses on the written word!.......2007-10-03

This series is the best I've found after floundering off and on for years. I am a visual learner and the best way to learn for me is to read, but reading Japanese has always been presented as something difficult and fearful. Traditional courses put it off as long as possible and you are always taught "polite" language first. However, most of us who want to learn the language are used to hearing the extremely colloquial language found in our favorite anime and/or reading manga. This course does just the opposite. Polite language is not ignored, but colloquialisms that would only be taught to advanced students elsewhere are brought up right from the first.

More importantly, this course hits reading head on from the first page. While it's true that they hang on to romaji throughout the first book, it is eliminated in the two that follow. As the author warns in the preface to Vol. 2, it's time to strap on a headband and get to work after you've made it through the introductory first volume.

I'm now nearing the end of the second volume and ready to tackle the third in preparation for the JLPT in December. The author claims that you should be ready for the level 3 after Vol. 3, and I intend to put that to the test...literally.

Frankly, I would like to see this series repackaged for college use with more workbooks like that accompanying the first volume (and the answers only found in the teacher's edition!), it's that good and most college course books that I've seen are that BAD. (Don't even get me started on the dense, dry style and confusing romaji in "Japanese: The Spoken Language". It's horrible, and is yet one of the more commonly used series. *sigh*)

The format changes slightly after the first volume, with in depth work with those evil particles and verb conjugations. But to get to the heavy hitting work, you first must make it through the first volume.

My suggestion is to buy all 3 and the workbook for volume one and give yourself the goal of passing the level 3 JLPT (there are 4 levels with 4 being the easiest and 1 the hardest). With a definite goal and a once a year testing schedule with a definite date that YOU have no control over, it's much easier to buckle down and study.

It's working well for me, anyway. I've already noticed myself automatically reading the signs in pictures I took on vacation in Japan a few years ago..and not just the ones in English or kana!

3 out of 5 stars NO STROKE ORDER?? Good book but less value........2006-05-16

I'm a big fan of the first book in this series. Japanese in Mangaland seemed like a good jumping off point for those looking to do some self study in Japanese and I thought that the second book would really expand upon the ideas laid out in the first book. Not so. Book 2 is more of the same featured in book one which is, I guess, a mixed blessing. You'll have a grammar, vocabulary or culture lesson for a couple of pages, these can include a chart or two and possibly some pictures and the lesson is followed by several ONE PANEL manga examples of the ideas introduced in the lesson. What's the problem? Well, for the second book I would've liked to have seen more than one panel and the manga used aren't any I've ever seen before making the examples harder to relate to or even remember often. I think having some of your favorite characters (or maybe even some you're familiar with) can help he ideas stick in your head. Also, anybody who's studied japanese can tell you that context is VERY important as the language itself is rather vague. So, getting one panel where a character is yelling out a sentence that is TOTALLY dependant on the panel above or below it for context isn't going to help you understand it. You'll just have to rely on Bernabe and his translation choices. I think that "Mangajin's Basic Japanese through comics" does a better at this aspect of the book. There you get an entire section or page of manga which is then broken down and analyzed by whatever topic was introduced in that lesson. I've honestly retained more from being able to preview that book here at Amazon than from several of the lessons in JiM 1 or 2.
Another thing that's a HUGE, HUGE step down from the previous book (and one that I find very misleading, mind you) is that this book claims to teach you Kanji and that together with the first and third books you'll have learned about 400 or so Kanji, but in books 2 and 3 ther is NO STROKE ORDER for the new kanji being "taught". WHAT? How important is stroke order? Critically so! Most people learn kanji the way they learned their ABCs. Repitition, repitition, repitition. This book provides the various On and Kun readings and the typical example compound, but if you're learning these charact ers for the first time and this book is your ONLY source of info than your out of luck. The first book was also bigger and had more lessons so for the money you got more in the first book.
So here's my run down:
PROS: If you liked the first book, this is the more of the same.
CONS: Should include more information. Uses Manga that I've never seen or heard of. Not enough manga for a book that's supposed to teach you "through" manga. The Kanji are "taught" with no stroke order. It's only 3 bucks cheaper than part 1 but has WAY less info making it less valuable in my eyes.

3 out of 5 stars High on grammar, Low on manga.......2006-03-27

I was really looking forward to this book based on a review at a Japanese news site. Previously I enjoyed the great manga based lessons in the monthly Nihongo Journal but it's no longer being published. So I was looking for something to replace it.

I thought Japanese in Mangaland would feature a page or two of manga and then explain the grammar that goes along with a story. However, there is no story. What you get is a grammar book with one panel manga as examples. This might have been fine for the beginner book but the intermediate level should be expanded to more panels to show a conversation.

The grammar lessons themselves are extensive and detailed. Each panel of manga illustrates the point being explained. The manga is interesting although I really don't recognize much of it. Don't expect to see Goku, Naruto, or any well known characters.

Since the manga is so obscure, why not use original created manga instead? I would have preferred to have a short manga story with several grammar points worked into a useful conversation. As it is, Japanese in Mangaland offers a lot of grammar lessons but the manga doesn't do much except to break up the lines of text.

5 out of 5 stars Best series of language books I own........2006-03-10

This series of language books is the best I own. I have university textbooks for both Italian and Japanese. As usual they are comprehensive, but dry and impossible to use for self study. I purchased the Japanese for Busy People books, but found them also to be dry and difficult for self study. But the Japanese in Mangaland series is amazingly entertaining. I have found that my motivation to study and comprehension of the language have both increased since buying these books.

The main reason this series succeeds where others fail is that it is truly geared toward the self studier. The grammar is presented in simple stages along with plenty of examples. Vocabulary in introduced slowly and in line with the grammar. But, the most compelling aspect is the examples are all drawn :) from manga. This gives a visual context in which to understand and remember the language principle's being presented.

4 out of 5 stars Say goodbye to romaji, and step up to Intermediate!.......2005-11-20

Continuing this excellent series, "Japanese in Mangaland 2" brings up the level to intermediate, eliminates the training wheels of romaji, and teaches several real-life common scenarios that one might encounter in Japan.

Following the same style as volume 1, the lessons are presented with a grammar point, vocabulary, and then follows up with examples from various manga and finishes with a review quiz. The covered topics alternate between pure grammar, like "the -te form" and particle lessons, and scenario-based lessons like "At the airport" and "In the hotel of ryokan."

"Japanese in Mangaland 2" is a serious study book, and not just a way to memorize a few cute phrases of your favorite manga. The author assumes familiarity with the topics covered in "Japanese in Mangaland 1" and continues forward with each lesson. While not a complete study course, as no language should be studied without conversation practice and listening skills, it is an excellent addition and study-aid that can be used to support language acquisition.

The main drawback of this series is that the manga used is not well-known or popular. True otakus would probably rather learn from their favorite characters, but the rights to those are too difficult to acquire. In fact, the manga examples are original to this book, and while clearly mangaesque they are often not Japanese in origin.

However, this should not be a barrier to the purpose of the book, which is to teach Japanese in an authentic environment of manga with real-life situations and conversations.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful and Action Packed.......2007-06-08

I am a HUGE Michael Turner fan and was so excited when I saw this book for sale through Amazon. Even if you don't care about the amazing world he has created here you must admit it's beautiful to look at. This is a great deal specially with all the extra cover art inside. Don't miss this hardback version either. It's so rare to find that done these days.

4 out of 5 stars Dragons Vs. Video Gamers!.......2006-03-07

From Michael Turner, whose work on Superman/Batman brought it to godlike popularity, comes this new series he collaborated with writer Jeph Loeb. Soulfire takes place in the early 23rd Century. Even though it doesn't seem as advanced as a future you'd imagine would be two hundred years from now, they still cling to outdated concepts like virtual reality arcades.

Its here that young Mal and his mates were enjoying a nice afternoon engaged in electronic fantasy worlds. They are soon brought back to the real world when a mysterious bikini-clad woman approaches them, and grabs Mal and hurls them both out of a skyscraper. What seems like a botched suicide attempt turns into something different as the woman reveals to have a pair of large wings on her back. Mal manages to knock himself free from her, only to plummet to almost certain doom. Luckily he hits a few streamers on the way down to break his fall. After landing, another strange woman on a motorcycle rides up and offers to save him. The winged woman chases after them. The biker chick also has a pair of wings, and she flies up after the other one where they engage in mortal combat. After the evil winged-chick leaves, the other one reveals herself as Grace, and that she must take Mal to Hawaii on a matter that involves saving the entire world. At the same time, reports start coming from all over the planet about dragons showing up and causing devastation to numerous major cities.

Soulfire has a very crisp and colorful look to it. The dragons featured in it look like they're something that the makers of Evangelion would quake at. The story itself has a great "Blade Runner meets Lord Of The Rings" appeal to it. It appears to have a bright future, provided the creators can avoid the pitfalls of other hyped-up fantasy comics like Battle Chasers and keep their mind on track with their artistic vision.

5 out of 5 stars Light the Fire Within.......2006-02-11

Finally, finally, FINALLY we get the Trade of the Greatest thing in comics since Batman: Hush and Superman: Godfall!

The original hardbound/trade paperback of the first volume of Fathom is one of the those books that absolutely everyone should read. It's the story of a person awakening to their past, their present, and their future, discovering that there is far more to the world than they ever imagined. It is a story of mer-people who live beneath the waves and the young woman who is the key to their future. While the dialog may not have been the slickest every made (Turner wrote the story too), the characters he crafted were good enough to have their own series spin-offs (Cannon Hawke is one of my all-time favorite characters). What all this means is....

Soulfire is a series that is completely original. It's not based off of some Marvel/DC universe or story. It's a completely different world with completely different characters. It is a return to the imagination of Fathom under the direct control of it's creator. Only this time, Michael Turner is truly at the zenith of his creative and artistic abilities, and he's got Jeph Loeb writing the dialog.

If I have ever had reason to complain about anything that Turner does, it stems from two things. First, the series that he draws are notorious for being delayed and delayed and delayed and delayed and delayed like you wouldn't believe. I think at one point it was either getting close to or feeling close to a year between issues of Soulfire (I think I finished a quarter of college, moved to another state and got a new job between issues). Secondly, when Turner does grace us with a few pages of his masterful work, it is just that. A few pages. He's fond of doing two page spreads for character introductions, action sequences, and just plain cool moments (and I wouldn't have it any other way, it's like Widescreen for your book-reading pleasure!), and that makes it feel even shorter. You barely even start to understand what's happening before the issue is over.

As I was buying the issues of this series when it was coming out, I was dying for three things. First, the next issue, second, a trade paper-back so I wouldn't have to buy all the alternates just for the awesome covers (but in the end I bought almost all of the alternates anyway), and third for the main (or is it secondary main?) character to become "the one", awaken his powers, and start fighting dragons! What I got instead was not quite what I wanted (I already told you how long it took for the issues to come out, and let's not even start on how long the trade was delayed, oh and I'm still waiting on the hardcore battles to begin...) but the journey has still been very much worth it.

I said it before and I'll say it again, Turner is at his absolute best right now. And he really pours his heart and soul into his personal projects. The characters created are fully fleshed out (and very likable AND cool). The plot is to die for (Death of Magic? Winged Beautiful Women? Dragons?!). The pacing and excellent and the art is... I can't stop saying it. Turner's art is the best you can find. Teamed up with his dream team of inkist and colorist it absolutely boggles the mind The only other art that can really compare to it would be Jim Lee, Alex Ross, J Scott Campbell, and maybe a few of the other greats. It's worth reading for the eye-candy alone.

And here it is. The complete first story arc with all of the awesome dialog by Loeb and the awesome art by Turner. All the alternates, the issue 0 and the preview issue. No longer do you need to refrain from reading the story because of fear of tarnishing your sacred individuals of the rare issues. At long last you can read and re-read the entire first chapter of this story over and over. If you're a Turner fan, or just a fan of great art (or even just a fan of good sci-fi fantasy) you will buy this right now. I do so hope I'll be able to see the end of this awesome series. But if not, I could be happy just with this, the awesome introduction. My personal thanks to Michael Turner for helping to keep the the truly creative independent comics alive.

      3 out of 5 stars Similar Patterns.......2003-09-04

This is the second volume in the PATTERNS OF CHAOS series, comprising the third and fourth original books. I reviewed the first volume a short time ago, and what I wrote in that review holds true for this volume. In short, I found the plot was pretty good and the characters sympathetic and appealing. There were three aspects of it that I was critical of. First, the not-so-alien aliens. Second, the author's use of a psi power called "bahdur" as a plot device. Finally, I thought that potentially compelling action situations in the story were glossed over. See my earlier review for a more complete discussion of these issues.

This volume generally has the same strengths and weaknesses as the first. In fact, the use of "bahdur" becomes ever more outrageous. Sometimes characters can tell who the attacking pilot is in another flyer through it, others times they are not even aware of enemies right outside their door until it's too late, or are unaware of the nearby presence of a close friend or ally.

Besides the above, however, there is one additional criticism I will add in regard to this volume. It has a very abrupt ending. The story builds toward a final confrontation, but as I got into the last twenty or thirty pages it seemed that there was still a lot that needed to happen. I actually went back and looked to see if there was another volume in the series. I didn't think the author could possibly wrap everything up in the few pages that remained. The bad news is, he doesn't. The climactic scene is pulled off and a brief denouement follows, but a lot of loose ends are just left dangling.

PATTERNS OF CHAOS held my interest all the way through both volumes, but I was disappointed in the ending and, at the same time, glad it was over by the time I got there. It's a mildly entertaining read, especially if you can overlook the weaknesses and inconsistencies, but it ends up being just mediocre, given the shortcomings. If you've already read the first volume, you'll probably want to read this one just to see how it all comes out, but I can't recommend it.

Todd Williams, a 16 year old teenager who lives in the Denver projects goes through the hardships of life, while his friend Ezekiel is desperately trying to change the world. Because of thegangs and the violence in the neighborhood, Todd and his friends have to be careful and watch their back wherever they go. If the violence in his neighborhood isn;t enough, he doesn't have the greatest family either. His father isn't around, his brother Marcus is in a gang, and his older brother tries to control everyone around him.
While falling in love, stopping fights, and trying to build a relationship with his family, he has to live in a place where his word doesn't really matter.
I enjoyed this book because it's about the reality of the world today. This book isn't fake. I would definitely recommend this book, especially to young adults who are looking for a good read.

2 out of 5 stars I thought the book was ok........1999-10-18

I thought the book was ok but if I had to give it a rating I would give it 2 1/2 stars.. My opinion is that I would not recommend this book for little kids because of the language. My favorite character is Marcus because he was a vital part in this book and I like his rebellious attitude My least favorite character was Todd because he whines about every thing that's why I don't like him.

      4 out of 5 stars I really like this book a lot........1999-10-16

I think this book is for people my age 15 and over. You really have to read this book to really understand this book. This book explains real life that is going on today. So many people die from being in gangs. Most people that are in gangs die,go to jail, are moved far from where they use to live.I like Soulfire because it explains how people survive in today's world.

4 out of 5 stars This book was very interesting........1999-10-14

Soulfire takes place Denver Colorado. Basically the book is about Gangsters. I especially liked Todd Williams because he doesn't pick fights. I could not relate to the book for several reasons because I'm not in a gang. I really didn't like Zeke because he always got in fights. One thing I'll probably remember is when Tommy got shot because he was brave. Overall I'd give this book a +8 out of a 10. I would recommend this book to parents because it has many swears.

5 out of 5 stars The World Needs To Know About Her!!.......2007-03-01

I have to keep buying additional copies of this book because everyone always wants my copy! Soulfire truly is, as the author is, so incredibly different from all of the ridiculous and dubious other offerings one finds in the media these days. Between the gross manipulation of self-help insanity like "The Secret" which only has one secret: how to secretly get your money to buy all their products so that you can get rich and beautiful and buy that sports car you always wanted. (Meanwhile, the rest of the world is drowning. What a quaint marketing scheme to justify narcissism.) Or just look at the dangerous and socially irresponsible film "Borat." It doesn't take a genius to figure out that hatred is not funny, but we only think it so when we have become so numb as we now collectively are... which brings me back to Soulfire and this author, Brigitte Secard. You can literally feel this woman jump off the page with such power and wisdom, and most importantly: purity. You can actually feel her as you read this book, that you can feel she is in fact doing this for one reason... out of a beyond-words deep love that is on fire for the people. And that is something we hardly see anymore in our leadership. She talks about in the book how Soulfire is really a movement to evolve forward the legacy of Dr. King, Gandhi, Malcolm X, and Nelson Mandela. And you know what? That is precisely what this book does. Seriously. As a 29 year old Latina woman who was Vice President of one of the largest Latino non-profits in the United States, I can attest that what is in the book is the real thing. And when you see things like Rush Limbaugh getting nominated for a Nobel Peace Prize, (wha!?!) you just have to ask yourself what has happened to us? What has happened to `The Dream'? I, for one, think this is the brilliant and original work that should be receiving global acclaim and focus, not all of the incredibly self-serving tragic examples of leadership we typically see. And let me also say--this book is very funny too. If I had to describe this author, hmmm.. I would say she feels something like the DNA mixture of the intellectual acuity of one Cornel West, the otherworldly sageness of the Dalai Llama, and the fiercely shameless beauty and womanhood of a Bettie Page. To say she seems to be unusual or rare would be quite the understatement, indeed.

The bottom line is this--this book has been a miracle in my life. No, not because it saved my life. No one can do that. It gave me something infinitely more valuable: it taught me I could save my own life, and after that-- my marriage, too. And in times like these, my greatest prayer is that this author and her voice reach our world. It has truly never been more needed than right now, especially for the younger generation, as we really do need her in the midst of all this violence and madness and everyone popping pills for depression and everything else. I am just so thankful I found this book when I did... ! It is truly the peace that passeth understanding. I would have never even believed it was real or even possible, except that it is. She is. I must say: Thank You Soulfire. You are a profound gift to a world in need.

5 out of 5 stars One Wild Ride..........2004-10-07

SOULFIRE: It's not a book, it's an experience; an emotional and soulful ride thru your own personal insights, thoughts and viewpoints, and Ms. Secard is your personal guide. It's a book that offers new ways of thinking, and acknowledges that everyone is different and that difference should be celebrated, not simply tolerated.

Thanks Brigitte, I thoroughly enjoyed your book... when do I get it signed?

5 out of 5 stars Come Home to Yourself!.......2004-07-22

A lack of love is the root of all of our problems in this world, personally, socially, politically and otherwise. However, before we can address the issues outside of us, we must first heal the lack of love within ourselves.

Brigitte Secard's book, Soulfire, is a tool that will help aid your delivery to self-love and self-truth. Only truth and inspiration lie between the pages of this book. Secard effectively demonstrates how a lack of love for the self results in disunity and disharmony in our world as a whole.

This book is not about self-help. It is about recognizing the truth that you and everyone else on this earth is already whole and perfect as they are. Only through realizing this fact will we be able to heal not only ourselves, but the world around us.

I have several books on my shelf that I regard as being life-changing and extremely important, but this one delivers the ultimate truth like no other. I regard Brigitte's message as the truth, because I have begun to walk the path that she speaks of and my entire life has begun to change. I don't think it was a coincidence that soon after I began to walk this path, I was fortunate enough to encounter Brigitte, herself. It is important to know that an author practices what they preach, and her presence and existence alone serves as the ultimate example of a soul eternally on fire with love and joy. I never knew that humans could live in constant love and joy until I met her. But the truth is that we are all meant to live in such a state. With that said, I urge you to buy this book and begin your own journey home to your truth!

      5 out of 5 stars Remarkable.......2004-06-05

As a librarian who purchases psychology, philosophy, religion, and literature books for a major metropolitan public library --I have seen more 'spirituality-self help' books and reviews than anyone should have to. This book is exemplary...I don't think there's a single individual who wouldn't gather insight and collective wisdom from this very smart and decent book. The book's graphic and organizational aesthetics compel the eye nearly as much as the self. Very impressive.
