I purchased this book to help me with my family trip. It was quite helpful when I don't know how to say certain
things. I was able to learn how to ask for directions during our driving trips to Tuscany town. I was able to purchase fresh grocery, order food.

I also learn some Italian from the CDs I purchased from Amazon.

I highly recommend this book. My children picked up some Italian, too.

I travelled alone in Italy for one week, and this little book was so helpful...referenced it again and again during my visit. It came in handy for practical situations travelers always encounter...directions, menu verbiage, and basic conversation with locals.
It also helped in more specific situations...for women traveling, this will help you formulate quick responses to the "ciao bellas" you'll receive. Bene!

Potty Mouth Phrases.......2007-03-09

I thought this would be a great way for my 10 year old and me to learn a few phrases before our trip to Italy. This would have been fine if I was 20 years younger and traveling with a bunch of free loving hippies. Using this book, I can use pick up someone up at a bar, ask for a condom, let everyone know I brought my own needle and call people derogatory names. Sure, I can learn to order spaghetti for dinner, but this is definitely not what I was expecting. In the future, I will have to read over a phrase book in person before purchasing.

How do you say that in Italian? When you need a quick answer, this little pocket-sized volume can come to the rescue. Organized according to situation (politics, banks, music, souvenirs, even romance and dating), this compilation of phrases, vocab, and basic grammar is user friendly and practical. Tho it's hard for me to imagine having to say "Spogliati" to any of the Italians I meet ("take your clothes off"), if the need arises, I'll be prepared. Amusing in parts, portable, and broader in scope than most phrasebooks, you can't go wrong with this little personal assistant. Just remember to carry with you!

The Best Italian Phrasebook.......2002-05-06

After travelling to Italy several times in the last few years for both work and pleasure, I have found this to be by far the best phrasebook available. The grammar is correct, there is instruction on improving your Italian capabilities and useful side information on everything from menus to dating. Not a substitute for practice and study, of course, but certainly the best available phrase book for Italian (believe me, I've tried at least 4 others!)

A great trip primer.......2001-07-29

I highly recommend this little book for anyone wanting to function quickly in Italian. We just got back from a trip to Italy and I found the little book a great help. My only regret is that I did not begin working with it a couple months before taking off. If you don't have time to do a full fledged course in Italian, this little book will get you operational in no time at all. And the Italians love it when they see you making an effort!

Helpful -- Take A Dictionary Too.......2000-09-17

In a recent trip to Italy, I found the Lonely Planet Italian Phrasebook to be helpful while buying train tickets and making basic transactions. The book stayed in my pocket as insurance against any situation that I may run into where the other party did not speak any English. (The book is a very good size for living in a pocket). I did find, however, in the heavy tourist areas of Italy, many people speak a little bit of English. So, I did not use the phrasebook as much as I had expected.

As a suggestion, take a small dictionary along with the phrasebook. The dictionary in the back of the book is incomplete. You will need a dictionary to translate signs and labels.

I suggest purchasing the phrasebook, but buy a small dictionary also. WIth the combination, you should have a pleasant trip in Italy.

Great phrasebook for every situation.......2000-08-01

I visited Rome in October 1999, and I brought this book along with me. It was very useful for navigating through the city, and a wonder at restaurants. Also, while many phrasebooks are similar, the Lonely Planet phrasebooks are thoughtful enough to include phrases on sex (Was it good for you?), common pickup lines (Do you come here often?) and polite rejections for same (You're not my type.), and specific phrases for technology issues (I'd like to surf the Internet), disabled people (Is there wheelchair access?) and gay people (Where are the gay hangouts?). There's also a section called "Traveller's Latin", which will help you translate all the inscriptions you find on arches and tombs. In short, a well-rounded phrasebook for travellers who might not fit the standard tourist profile, or for ones who do!

Well, this is where LP keeps its Italian. . ........2004-06-23

This book is a good resource. I'm slightly uneasy with the Serbo-Croatian section, which seems to contain some errors. I also wish the system for presenting varying levels of formality or various genders could be more standardized throughout the series, across languages. Also, Americans should keep in mind that these pronunciation rules were apparently designed more for British (and Australian?) readers. The effects of that mainly show up in vowel pronunciation, especially with o's and a's.

Lonely Planet Ought to Reprint This One.......2000-11-03

I used two different editions of this phrasebook in Macedonia, Greece and Bulgaria (western part, where Macedonian is spoken). Not only did I find it extremely easy to use, but everyone I met wanted to buy it off me. Albanians suggested that the Albanian section was nice; Macedonians suggested the Macedonian section was good. A Serbian friend of mine found the Serbian section useful for learning English phrases. Several people in Greece were delighted to see something that had Macedonian and Greek and Albanian all in one phrasebook but suggested that the Greek section was spotty. A member of the Turkish minority in Macedonia said she was irritated that Turkish was not included as a Mediterranean European Language but _even so_ tried to buy the phrasebook off me.

Mostly Useful.......2000-12-02

I found the phrase book to be very handy in some languages, but in other languages, it didn't seem to be so thorough. I was in Central and Eastern Europe for four months and mostly used the book when I was eating out. It's a good source for vegetarians. I used t occasionally when asking directions as well and found my way around fairly well using the book. In less "touristy" areas the book didn't include as much information and I was left to my own devices.

I thought this was a really good book because like someone said it showed the outcomes of a depressed teenager. I thought it was interesting and would have wannted Stacey to go out with Robert again because it looks like they belong together! Keep up the good work Ann! What is the next story going to be about?

Robert was not nice to Stacey.......1999-11-06

I think that Robert kind of made his own bed and should have laid in it but I guess he was having serious problems. This book was sorta boring, the climax being the part where Stacey wakes up in the night because someone is throwing stones at her window. Robert was a drip and a loser but he obviously had a problem. Stacey should have told him about Jesus!

Confusing and sort of stupid plot.......1999-06-16

"Stacey's Ex-boyfriend" is really weird and really boring. All it talks about is Robert's stupid moody attitude. There is very little of a plot and doesn't really make sense. In the end, it's even stupider. (to me) The other parts of the story (Kristy and the other baby-sitters and their charges and the Strawberry Fair) was better.

Stacey's Ex-boyfriend was sort of boring. It was a pretty simple plot that could be used as a side plot. The cover wasn't very nice, either. Stacey's hair looked like a wig and Robert looked about 18. And there was also Stacey's Ex-Best Friend. Why does Stacey have so many exes? Needs improvement. Claudia and the Terrible Truth much better.
