Excellent Survival Guide.......2007-09-11
This book is written mainly for those in social sciences who've begun work on their dissertations. It's comforting timely overview - while written a while back, still applies. It's practical guidance is both comforting and helpful -and will encourage any doctoral student who has begun the process.
This one's good.......2007-05-13
A not-too-lengthy, not-too-convoluted explanation of the dissertation writing process, including what is entailed, what kind of support you can expect (and not), and how to manage your own. What I especially like about this book is that its points seem to sink in later with me (whereas with most books, the points seem to evaporate later).
This is well written and of value not only to the dissertation writer but also to all those who have no idea what we're doing (but lots of opinions about our activities, just the same!
Worth skimming, but not owning........2007-02-02
The author wrote this in the 80's when the future of academia was looking a little bleak so I can forgive him some of his pessimism, but the book is rather dreary and has the principal effect of scaring away those considering a doctoral program (which is perhaps a good thing). The book has three critical flaws: it's 100 pages too long, it's dated (especially the material on computers and sexual harassment), and the author has the annoying belief that social science dissertations are the only "full" dissertations. By suggesting that his own field of Sociology is the most difficult field of study, the author alienates many potential readers and loses any claim of impartial observation. All of the useful gems of advice are covered in a shorter and more optimistic book written by Evelyn Hunt Ogden on the same subject. Read that one instead.

Having been in the Business of Education for 29 Years; I know all too well the dynamics and inter-relationships between 'The Politics of Education' as well as 'Your Step-By-Step Guide to Academic Achievement and Acceptance.
And what is EDUscam. def.; "The Practice of Profiteering by U.S. Colleges and Universities.This occurs within this Billion Dollar Industry that is Education when a "Student-Customer"is 'bumped' [failed] from a respective course or Curriculum. This Practice is especially rampant among the Graduate (Master's Thesis and Doctoral Dissertation [Ph.D.]and yields hundreds of millions of Dollars for U.S. Colleges & Universities.
The Primary Target audience of this pernicious practice: Women and Minorities.
My name is Frank Boyd and what I have been speaking of is merely the tip of the iceberg...not at all far from what this author is saying, and I am more tahn available to share "ALL" the vicissitudes of 'The Politics of Education'.

GREAT "office politics" for the PhD--Buy before you write your prospectus!.......2006-01-06
Do. Not. Be. Fooled. into the "truth and beauty" of the academic world ideals-- finishing and going from ABD to PhD is HARD. The ABD student doesn't need encouragement as much as warnings, in my opinion. I very nearly didn't finish for a variety of reasons, mostly work-related, but thankfully I successfully defended in December 2005. There are some other books that are better for the nitty-gritty of writing the dissertation (Authoring the PhD by Patrick Dunleavy comes to mind) but this book is a classic in terms of the many pitfalls facing the ABD student, many of which you really need to know BEFORE you are ABD.
The one piece of advice in this book that is worth the whole book itself is the warning to limit your committee to those who want you to succeed. I faced just such a choice at a certain period and thankfully I decided NOT to ask a person whose scholarship interested me but whom I did not trust to be on my committee. BOY, was I right! The fullness of time and the things he did to other people in the department, showed me the truth of that warning.
Not to be missed.

This is a lovely story, and I wanted to own the book to follow while I listen to the story in Spanish on my ipod. Children's stories in Spanish are a delightful way to study for the mid-level student.

A BOOK THAT INFLUENCED MY LIFE
The book that has influenced my life is "The Little Prince". This book iis basically about a little blond boy that meets an adult with who he will become friend, somewhere in the world, dunno where.He discovers, during a trip, adults, who will allow him to understand adults world and life on hearth In the begining of the story, the pilot crashes in a desert and thers were the story begings.This story has many characters, but the two main ones are the pilot (the narrator), and the little prince.One of the main settings are the dessert were the pilot meets the little prince, and the planet were the little prince lives, but this story has many settings.
I read this book because my mother told me that every kid must read this book, so she gave me the book and i read it when i was almost 12 years old. This book has influenced my life in many ways. Every time i read this book it makes me think, about pepole and friendship, it makes me cry, laugh, and be a better person and a better friend. It also makes me be more pacient, and this is a thing that im not so good at, but every time im in a cituation were i have to be pacient, since i read that book, I have teach myself to try to understand people, and why they are like that. This book is in a prose/chatter way written, in this way it was easier for me to understand the meaning of the words. This book you have to read it more than once to get the meaning of the words.

Este libro es simultáneo el libro más maravilloso y el libro más triste. La historia del piloto que se estrella en el desierto y que se encuentra ahí con el principito, me aflige mucho.
Aunque es un libro para ninos, gente de toda edad puede leerlo y no es aburrido. Puede ensenarnos mucho sobre la amistad. Para mí este libro fue un enriquecimiento para mi vida. Y podría leerlo decenas de miles de veces.

el principito uno de esos libros que siempre debemos leer en diferentes edades, creo que es una de esas escrituras hechas para el disfrute de todos, nos hace pensar y ser más humanos cada vez que lo leemos, solo piensa que alguien todos los días esta esperando para ser domesticado. Si tienes un hijo leeselo y espera, que al cabo de los años el solo buscará el libro para leerlo.

I listened to this CD set while driving. First, the production qualities are oustanding. The text is read clearly, thoughfully, and in a way which engages your attention. Bravo! Then of course, the story itself is much much more than a child's tale. Brilliant!

This book is a great book, I'm far above the suggested age and I enjoyed it very much. This is a great book which teaches certain values that most of us have forgotten in this materialistic world. I definitely recommend this for kids and adults.

The `90s have proved a frustrating experience for Latin America. More so to those who consider Liberalism to be the fairest political system. After a seemingly positive start, a series of unclear administrative practices ensued, plagued by lack of control and a steep growth of government expenditure, most for corrupt and clientelistic reasons. This situation -of high expectations about a Truth victory frustrated by political manouvers- immediately recalls Juan Bautista Alberdi's book "Peregrinación de Luz el Día, o Viajes y aventuras de la Verdad en el Nuevo Mundo"*. As a sharp publicist Alberdi identified his villains with thos most easily identifiable at his time: Tartufo, don Basilio de Sevilla, Gil Blas de Santillana. Regrettably nowadays hipocrisy, bad faith and vile are common political practices, thus loosing their stealth. Today's state of the art political trap comes disguised as "pragmatism" or "idealism". These are much more difficult to detect, as their evil lurks behind the acromegalia of their positive characteristics.
