Great explanations, many exercises, answer key.......2006-07-30
As a teacher of many grade levels and English fluency levels, I found this book very useful. It has perhaps the best explanation I've read on "perfect" tenses. My ESL student couldn't understand why he should use a simple past tense versus a present perfect tense, and this book helped him.
The book features many useful charts on major and minor grammar topics. I find the charts very effective and easy to learn and teach. There are also plenty of exercises in this book, too.
I've used the book with 5th graders, 12th graders, and ESL adults. I highly recommend it. It's very well organized and quick, quick, quick to use in the classroom.

The exercises in this workbook are well targeted to help students with specific issues in English grammar, issues students commonly meet. The exercises encourage thinking in English instead of translating.
Ya either luv it or hate it.......2006-03-18
At UC Berkeley, when I first started, several teachers recommended this book to me. I perused it and used it for the next 16 years - when the program was closed. The large number of exercises, the charts that really show how the verbs function (for visual learners), and the oral exercises (for aural learners and reinforcement) were invaluable. Even now, I sometimes refer to it for answers and ideas in specific areas. However, I must say that two teachers with whom I worked, really disliked this book, and never used it. But, 2 out of 28, still puts it pretty high on the list as far as I am concerned. I cannot recommend this book highly enough.
P.S. It is the mid-level book of a 3-book series. The other two are also excellent!
The best book for teaching English grammars to foreigners..........2003-10-10
I think this book is really wonderful. I have been teaching ESL/EFL for about eight years, and I have yet to see a book that is so complete. I teach English in Mexico, where everything the students have ever learned comes on a chart, so the charts are a HUGE help. What I most like about this grammar book is the oral exercises. Since I focus mostly on speaking and listening (due to my student's needs, of course) the students generally love the oral drills. I really recommend this book, especially for the oral practice of the grammar points. Any grammar book gives you boring fill in the blank exercises, but this book goes beyond that.
Drill and Learn.......2003-05-30
This book is exhaustive but it gets the job done for any student on a plateau. It should be used after a simpler book like Side by Side 3. The goal is to reinforce and consolidate the skills learned in the simpler communicative learning books. TESL/TEFL apologists for ESL students obviously have not integrated this book because their students are not ready for it yet. It is a social matter of lower-educated working adults or a motivated language learner. It is for immediate students and will polish their skills in general. Spoken language is not very directly correlated with reading and writing. If you can not speak well, then do a simpler book. Then practice, practice, practice...and do this book as you practice speaking only. You will move off the plateau in a few weeks to a couple of months. When you are finished, my experience with private students is profound. You are ready for advanced ESL classes in community college or local university. Advanced-level English is not for academic students, it is a bare minimum for the functional English literacy in this society. You'll still need spell check and grammar assistance, but you'll be so much more confident. You'll distinguish your language skills in spoken, reading and in your general everyday writing. You can't skip to near-native speaker with this book, and slang books alone are not a short cut. This is a time saver.
Good for Grammar Fundamentalists; Weaker than Murphy.......2003-04-03
This "classic" ESL text, recently updated with green headlines and green tinted pages in the appendix, remains a favorite among English grammar fundamentalists. This thick book offers the drill and kill approach to learning languages with far too much time spent on minor differences of more interest to linguists than to ESL students wanting to read, write, and speak English. What is the goal, anyway?
Yet even if one believes in dwelling on the smallest details of some idealized use of the English language, I'd hestitate to recommend to either the second or third versions. Why?
"Fundmentals" costs far too much, weighs too much, and contains far too many impractical exercises of limited practicality. Teachers may find the grammar puzzles fascinating, but students usually want to learn grammar so they can use the language.
In comparision, Raymond Murphy's "Grammar in Use" series (Cambridge University Press) provides far clearer examples, a simpler format, and a more logical format. It's also ideal for self-study since lesson's answers can be found in the back.
Plus, the "Grammar in Use" books cost far less. Administrators and teachers, especially ones working with immigrants and refugees, should consider price and practicality when choosing texts.
Granted, this "classic" text makes more sense in elite, private programs where wealthy studdnts are preparing for the TOEFL test outside of the United States. Yet immigrants and refugees, however, don't need, want, or have the time to master these often silly distinctions without a difference. They need practical readings and compelling conversation exercises that help them get better jobs, make smarter consumer choices, and fully participate in the society. Ms. Azar's book provides almost no assistance to immigrants as they struggle to create new lives in an often confusing, strange land.
Finally, I must confess that I don't like fundamentalists in religion or language study. The same excessive zeal and narrow-mindedness that can distort and pervert rich religious traditions can be detected in the Fundamentals of English Grammar. Ms. Azar wants new English readers to write - and speak - far "better" and more "correct" than the vast majority of native English speakers. She advocates a fossilized view of the English language where innovation, slang, and change are all "corruptions" and "wrong." Let's just throw away the last century of art, film, and literature!
How can we, as English teachers, ask our immigrant students to write and speak better than of the President of the United States?

Plenty of practice exercises.......2004-02-12
Ever been shocked at how many errors a colleague catches in your writing? How long has it been since you worried about parts of speech, sentence construction, and punctuation? If you are like most of us, the word "participle" strikes a note of fear in your belly. It doesn't have to be that scary.
In bettering our language and writing skills, we need a good book. We need a book that doesn't go into too much semantic detail that we are scared off. This book has plenty of exercises and examples. Each chapter is too the point and has a summary. Then, the book has plenty of exercises.
If you are not part of a class, then the practice set is for you since it has the answers listed in the back. This way, you can test your understanding. If you are teaching a class and looking for a grammar text with exercises in the same book, after the practice exercises are more exercises, which you can use as assignments in the class.
This book works well as a self-help or classroom text. It is similar to Forms B and C, but with different exercises.
English grammar is fundamental.......2001-08-22
I've been involved as a user with this textbook since its 7th edition and still find it to be the best grammar text out there. Its depth of knowledge and organization assist the reader in understanding the various grammatical units writers can use, as well as how to use them correctly. The only weaknesses I've identified are typos, repeated examples in the same or adjacent chapters, occasional incorrect answers in the key, the discussion of subjects and verbs placed before parts of speech (the most basic grammatical unit), and the omission of interjections and conjunctions from the parts of speech chapter. I do love this text and will continue to use it.

Es uno de los mejores libros que he obtenido para aprender la gramatica fundamental en Inglés. Yo habia realizado cursos de Inglés en institutos Educativos especializados, pero luego mi profesión me exigió hablar y escribir el Inglés perfectamente, entonces decidi contratar un profesional para clases particulares y me dijo que comprara este libro. A Must Have For Spanish Learners (Even Advanced).......2005-09-21
This book has definitions, not just word-for-word translations, that broaden your understanding of the spanish culture and language. There are words in this book that even most common spanish-speakers haven't heard of, so this book is great for beginners and advanced speakers. I would recommend to anyone no matter the cost.
