extremely useful.......2007-10-03
I went to France not knowing any French except what I learned from songs, and somehow I didn't think knowing how to say "fish" and "will you go to bed with me?" would be good enough. This book was really great for a lot of different situations and was way more useful than my friend who claimed to know French from 3 years of high school. The pronunciations were particularly useful, although be careful if you get a "telecarte" as they might sell you minutes on a cell phone you don't have, not a telephone card.
French Booklet.......2007-07-03
Its OK, I didn't use it too much. Everyone speaks English. Would have been more helpful if I'd went into the more rural parts.
French: Lonely Planet Phrasebook.......2007-05-19
The book is very useful for traveling...as expected from a lonely planet speech book. However, it would be better with an audioguide to pronounce it correctly.
Useful in all situations.......2006-12-06
I got this book as a gift before going to Paris for a month and after taking one quarter of French at school. This book is so useful in very many situations! With my basic skills in pronunciation and grammar, this book carried me through at restaurants, metro stations, going out, etc. The two-way dictionary is also great because I had French people look up words they didn't know in English. There's also a funny romance section that I don't know if you would ever use, but it's a great read and my French friends love it as well. Overall I would recommend this phrasebook if you're going to France for a short trip and as long as you learn some basic pronunciation you should be fine!
Excellent Book to get around!!!!!.......2006-03-10
I was in Paris and with the phonetic pronunciation of phases the Parisians would understand us completely. I was so surprised!!! This book was very helpful and I would recommend it to anybody who needs to get around in France. I just bought the Italian version for my next trip!!!!

Excellent!.......2007-02-14
I am going to Paris in a few weeks and need a small book to carry around. I found this book and it is fab!
I have tabbed off the important details, like how to get a taxi and how to order vegitarian food. It also features a great 2 way dictionary. I look forward to using this handy book in Paris!
easy to hear audio but hard to follow along with book.......2006-08-20
i was debating between this book and In-Flight and ended up getting both. good thing bc In-Flight audio was terrible, but the companion book was done very well. completely opposite, the Lonely Planet's audio is great - they say the word/phrase twice and slowly, but the books it comes with aren't so great. the companion pamphlet has the follow-along to the CD but does not help with pronounciation. it does come with a pretty big to-go book, about 300 pages worth of French lessons, words, phrases - everything. a bit too much for a beginner.
the audio is good, but don't expect to pop it in the cd player and be on your way.

In few countries will you depend on your phrasebook as much as in France. Certainly some folks there know English, but you'll want to be able to greet people politely, make small talk, shop in the open-air market, and order food more varied than boeuf bourguignonne. At some point you'll probably want to swear like a French sailor, and who knows, you may want to croon sweet French nothings too. For all this, you need the Lonely Planet French Phrasebook. Along with help on grammar and pronunciation, the vocabulary of getting around, finding a room, shopping, and health, and a two-way dictionary in back, there are all the phrases you'll need to sound erudite au café, artsy au musée, and risqué in bed. --Stephanie Gold

Customer Reviews:
Excellent BookýIF you have any prior knowledge of French.......2004-07-19
I found this book to be very helpful, but only if you've taken a French class before and know basic vocabulary and pronunciation. I don't think it will prove as helpful to someone with no background in French, unless maybe they study and practice it before going to France.
I found the sections on socializing very thorough and useful, but I wish that there had been more about the public transportation system. Overall, a useful guide if you want to talk to locals, who are so much nicer to you if you attempt to speak French, even if your accent isn't that great.
Good, but..........2002-04-26
Let me see if I can help clear up some of the confusion caused by the mixed reviews of this book:
It is true that this phrasebook is sorely lacking in pronunciation instruction. The emphasis is on phrases and general sentence structure. The grammar advice can be hard to follow unless you are already familiar with basic French grammar. Therefore I would not recommend this book for beginners, especially beginners who truly want to learn French beyond just the words needed while traveling.
Having said that, this book is an AWESOME resource for those with at least some background knowledge of the French language. Pretty much every idea/situation you would want to communicate is in this book. It's very well organized and a handy pocket size as well. I had 1 semester of French each in high school and college, and while I don't speak French too well I still remember the basic pronunciation and grammar rules. I found that this book contained enough phrases and general information to jog my memory enough to the point that I can sufficiently communicate in French with the help of this book alone.
So if you know a little (or more) French already and are looking for something with lots of handy phrases, go for this book - it will serve you well. If you are looking for an introduction to the language and/or have an interest in learning French from the ground up, I would recommend purchasing some sort of book & tape set, maybe with this phrasebook as a backup guide while traveling. Hope that helps!
SUPER.......2001-10-09
THIS IS A VERY COMPACT BUT VERY COMPLETE PHRASE BOOK. IT IS VERY EAST TO READ AND HAS INTERESTING TIPS AND HINTS THROUGH OUT. THE PRINT IS ALSO A GOOD SIZE FOR EASY READING. IT IS WORTH EVERY CENT.
"Can I buy drugs?": Yes. "Can you take our picture?": No........2001-08-28
We just got back from a 2-week vacation in France. We do not speak any French, and on the advice of the other reviews and the reputation of the publisher, we used this phrasebook for the trip. Boy were we disappointed! Tons of really basic things are missing from the book. For example, in the 2-way dictionaries and the food section, we could not find a lot of simple food items. What does "oeuf" mean? I'll give you a hint: you'll be as luckless in finding the answer as you will in finding the French word for "egg." The book also lacks standard travellers' phrases like "could you take our picture?" These are just a few of the many basic words, phrases, and terms that are missing here. What's even more infuriating is what this book DOES contain instead: an entire section devoted to "social issues," including talking politics, buying drugs, and dealing with the police if you are caught with drugs. My own views on these issues tend to be pretty liberal, but really - if you are not a native speaker of French, and are travelling abroad, do you have any business arguing social issues or getting involved in drug deals in a foreign country? And do these things really have any business being in a phrase book that doesn't even have the word for "egg"? I think the authors put in the extraneous stuff in order to fit in with Lonely Planet's hip, with-it image. Instead, they should have concentrated on making this book a little more helpful and useful. In France, the word "acceuil" appears in train stations, metro stations, airports, and on street signs. Not the most esoteric of terms, to be sure. The only place it doesn't appear is in this most useless of phrasebooks.
Great phrasebook.......2001-05-27
We used this phrasebook to get around Paris. A recommended reading on the plane to France. Master looking up the phrases fast. The logical sections makes this easy. We used this phrasebook frequently to decode menus at restaurants which are not as touristy (as recommended in LP Paris book). Overall, excellent guide, a must buy for your trip to France IMHO.

Mostly Useful.......2000-12-02
I found the phrase book to be very handy in some languages, but in other languages, it didn't seem to be so thorough. I was in Central and Eastern Europe for four months and mostly used the book when I was eating out. It's a good source for vegetarians. I used t occasionally when asking directions as well and found my way around fairly well using the book. In less "touristy" areas the book didn't include as much information and I was left to my own devices.

pretty good . . ........2004-06-15
Though it includes the occasional typo, this book is pretty good. It's especially nice to have the "smaller" languages. But did I miss something? Why is there no Welsh?
It was useful and very good to have around.......1999-07-18
This book is very useful to me because I travel to Europe every year and when I go there, it's difficult to get around the airports or the country itself. This little phrasebook has helped me to communicate with the other people in the countries I go to.
Too difficult to find a phrase.......1998-05-04
The phrases in this book work well and the phoenetic spelling isn't horrible, I just found it difficult to quickly find what I wanted to say. I found the two page "essential phrases" list in the back of my other travel guides more useful because you didn't have to flip a bunch of pages to get what you need. I was on a brief trip to Europe, this book may be more useful for longer trips.

300 Basic Words & Phrases, a month of pure joy using it in Vietnam.......2006-04-29
Wow! Only 300 basic words and phrases but what a wonderfully useful little guide. The audio was just right on for a beginner like me. Allowed me to hear and practice before the trip but the best part was the incredible 2x8=16 (front and back) panel folding booklet that came with the cassette. I can't tell you how many times I pulled it out of my pocket and pointed to a word to a native in Hanoi, DaNang and Saigon and was able to get a bicycle brought to me at the hotel, a tennis racket AND lessons from a pro, an improvised "tour/sightsee" by cyclo, and the most funny of all a "NAPKIN." How weird is that, they're not a paper society, they have no concept of papertowels and such amenities. Once I asked for nuo'c cai tra'i ca^y (Fruit Juice) I had all the orange, papaya, watermellon juice they could find at the open market; freshly squeezed and put in my room. We went to the market to buy stuff and I used too expensive (da' qu'a) so much and they loved it when I said this...they are very good at bargaining but are very fair, they always lower the price if you know how to say how much (Bao nhieu) Really enjoyed the trip, it made the whole vacation so much better to be able to engage in the language and they really rewarded us for trying. One complaint, I couldn't find the CD version and there's no iPOD version. It would sell like crazy if converted to digital medium and uploaded to iTunes or a server to us mp3 enable travelers. I took my iPOD everywhere and wished I had the audio in MP3 format.

Setting: small city in Ohio
Thirty-three-year-old Minerva Dobbs is annoyed when her current boyfriend dumps her three weeks before her sisters' wedding. But she's downright furious a few moments later when she overhears her now "ex" boyfriend bet hunky Calvin Morrisey that he can't take her home and bed her. In fact, she's so angry at them both that she lets Cal take her to dinner and decides to string him along until after her sisters' wedding. Minerva pegs Cal as a handsome "used car salesman of seducers." Cal thinks Minerva is a "cranky, starving, risk-averse statistician." But Minerva's hormones keep whispering "this one," although she knows the gorgeous Cal isn't the man for her practical, white-cotton-bra, several-pounds-over-thin, self. And Cal is blindsided by the lust he feels for the voluptuous, sensual woman he glimpses behind Min's actuary exterior. While Cal and Min struggle to deal with their mutual distrust and attraction, their friends and families try their best to interfere and direct the progression of the unlikely romantic connection.
Bet Me is unabashedly, irrepressibly romantic. In the wacky, wonderful world of Min and Cal, author Jennifer Crusie leaves no humorous situation unexplored--no potential comedic cauldron left unstirred--no hysterically funny complication left undeveloped. The reader is treated to a seemingly mismatched hero and heroine who fling caution to the winds to explore their unexpected attraction. The sexual tension is hot, the dialogue witty and wickedly sarcastic, and the supporting cast of secondary characters hilarious. Like Min's favorite Krispy Kreme donuts, this novel is rich and sinfully delicious. Indulge. Enjoy. --Lois Faye Dyer
Book Description
This is New York Times and USA Today bestselling author Jennifer Crusie's novel about long shots, risk management, true love, and great shoes. . . .Minerva Dobbs knows how to work the odds.Calvin Morrisey always plays to win. But when they face off, neither one is prepared.Because when real life meets true love, all bets are off. . . . Minerva Dobbs knows that happily-ever-after is a fairy tale, especially with a man who asked her to dinner to win a bet, even if he is gorgeous and successful Calvin Morrisey. Cal knows commitment is impossible, especially with a woman as cranky as Min Dobbs, even if she does wear great shoes and keep him on his toes. When they say good-bye at the end of their evening, they cut their losses and agree never to see each other again. But fate has other plans, and it's not long before Min and Cal meet again. Soon they're dealing with a jealous ex-boyfriend, Krispy Kreme doughnuts, a determined psychologist, chaos theory, a freakishly intelligent cat, Chicken Marsala, and more risky propositions than either of them ever dreamed of. Including the biggest gamble of all---true love.
Customer Reviews:
Couldn't put it down!.......2007-09-06
I LOVE Jennifer Crusie but she is at her best with Bet Me! I could not put the book down, in fact I stayed up all night reading it. I have enjoyed the quick wit and dialogue of all Crusie's books, but my favorite by far is Bet Me. I have bought copies for all the women in my life who have in turn bought copies for all the women in their life! I haven't met a person who didn't love this book!
Crazy Tension.......2007-08-09
Rather than retelling the plot, I'll focus my short comments on my reaction/review of the novel:
I really enjoyed this novel with all of its sauciness and sexual tension. This book, more than any others I've read in awhile, really builds the chemistry between the two characters so that you can't put it down! If you're wanting some good, escapist reading, this is a good choice.
Crusie at her very irreverent best........2007-08-08
At first you think Bet Me is going to be one of those `big misunderstanding' books, where Calvin Morrisey accepts a $10,000 bet from Minerva Dobbs' ex-boyfriend to get her into bed within a month. Yes, you read that right, $10,000. And of course you just know that he's going to get her into bed, she's going to learn about the bet, her heart will be broken, and all hell will break loose! Wrong! Well sure, it sort of starts out like that, but that's about it. There's nothing normal or predictable about this book. Drawn into the betting circle, so to speak, are Cal's two friends and business partners, Min's two girlfriends, her ex and Cal's ex, and - well, heaps of other family and friends. The joy of Crusie is watching sane people make a fool of themselves, all done with wry, self-deprecating humour, friendship bonds that are priceless, food (oooooh, yes, the food), animals, and a cheerful thumbing of the nose at all that is sacred in society. Like no-carb diets, for example. Min is a plus-sized heroine and Cal loves every lush inch so much he tries to feed her up. Her joy of all the naughty, forbidden foods is orgasmic for her and him! Gotta love this guy, even when he unashamedly sneaks peeks at her lacy underwear down her top. He develops a shoe fetish, previously unknown until Min walked into his life with her do-me, believe-it-or-not shoes and peek-a-boo toes, and an enormous appreciation for tying her up so she can't have her way with him too quickly. He has a bet to win/lose, and he'll do it in his own time, thanks. There are so many excellent lines in this book that your head will reel, and so many sexy vibes your bones will melt. This is Crusie at her very irreverent best.
One of my favorites by Crusie!.......2007-07-07
Min Dobbs has had it with her stuck up ex-boyfriend, her weight-obsessive mother, her sleazy future brother-in-law, and her ugly apartment. Then one night at the bar she overhears her ex-boyfriend, David, making a bet with one Calvin Morrisey. The terms? Cal has to get Min in bed within a month. Outraged, Min decides to string Cal along through at least one miserable date, before parting ways. What she doesn't expect is to fall head over heels with commitment-phobe Cal. Suddenly he's feeding her Krispy Kremes, buying her perfect shoes, and belting out Elvis in a crowded restaurant. Despite meddling exes, Cal's frigid family, and her overprotective best friend, will Min finally find her fairy tale? And will Cal be able to risk it all for love? Crusie will delight readers with her trademark humor and witty dialogue in this novel about a pleasantly plump sweetheart and her playboy prince.
I'll admit that this book was not what I would call true-to-life. After all, I've never met someone as perfect as Cal (who assures weight-conscious Min that men prefer women to be "soft and round" and sexy is all in the head *sigh*). But, Min and Cal's relationship is pretty realistic. Crusie demonstrates how love doesn't necessarily happen at first sight (i.e. the hilariously horrendous first date), but takes time and effort. Min may be funny and smart, but she's insecure about her appearance, a feeling almost all women can relate to. And despite his confident outlook, Cal has some family/childhood issues that come into play as well.
I love Jennifer Crusie and "Bet Me" is a fabulous example of her ability to tie in romance, humor, and wonderful characters into a great read!
A book to read again and again..........2007-04-24
Crusie has done it again with her great characters and witty dialogue.
I had to buy this on audio as well, just for the pleasure of having it read to me (by the way, the reader for the CD's is GREAT!)
The dynamics of her characters and the concepts of fate and chaos theory that obviously led to the weaving of this story make it all the more interesting. But it is indeed the great characters with real personalities and Crusie's ability to write great dialogue, with individual voices, for each of them is what holds the readers interest and makes her a favorite author.
I think that some of the poor reviews of this book relate to some people who find that they can't relate to the characters. Some of it may be a generational thing, as one review stated kindly, or that it is a matter of not caring for the genre, but it remains that this is a good book that is well writen in the author's genre.
Now as for the romances. I liked that Crusie covered three romantic relationships while still having the main love story the dominant one. I like that each of the main women had their own different ideas about love and were still able to be supportive of the other's needs.
This is a great book. Order a copy and enjoy, Reader, for it is most certainly worth it (And if you like to listen to books in the car, then get the Audio CD's).

Don't Bet on the Prince: How to Have the Man You Want by Betting on Yourself is a hard-hitting book that tells it as it is: while most women continue to seek their Prince Charming, what they're most likely to end up with is "Mr. Cheap, Mr. Bad-Mannered, Mr. Ill-Tempered ... Mr. My-Wife-Doesn't-Understand-Me." This is not a male-bashing book. This is a guide to helping women become stronger and more independent, becoming "Will-Be" women instead of "Wanna-Be" women. To the women who have the unfortunate tendency to lose themselves in their relationships, causing their self-esteem to plummet and giving the men in their lives too much control, Dr. Carle gives sensible advice ("Ask for What You Need and Believe You Deserve It") along with "Gilda-Grams," pithy summarizations of her wisdom (as in "Forget the 12-Step programs. Women in pain need only two steps: Get up. Get out."). After a thorough discussion of how to develop a better self-image, thus finding a healthier mate, the author advises how to keep your relationship going, not by using games, but by projecting a stronger you. --Jenny Brown
Book Description
When we dream of princes, we wake up with toads. What's a woman to do when one Prince Charming after another turns out to be a frog? According to Dr. Gilda Carle, women should never bestow "princely" expectations on men because it leaves men in control of-- and women in denial about-- the fundamental nature of the relationship. Often in their desire to be swept away and protected, women fail to cultivate their own internal strength. In order to succeed in love, women need to establish their own personal power, project it, and attract partners who respect it and reflect it. A woman's primary love should be the love she gives herself-- because, ultimately, how she treats herself sends a message about how she expects others to treat her. Dr. Gilda shows you how you can find a worthy mate by using her five key tenets: * Ask for what you need and believe you deserve to get * Project a Power Image * Give from the overflow, not from the core * Know how to receive * Enjoy being alone With a colorful assortment of case histories, insightful Self-Assessments, memorable Gilda-Grams, and plenty of humor to illustrate her practical and proven advice, Dr. Gilda reveals how to achieve a self-made version of happily-ever-after.

Repairing and Mending The Broken Hearted!.......2001-01-27
Just wanted to say...I have recently purchased, and am in the process of reading the book entitled "Don't Bet On The Prince" by Dr. Gilda Carle..I must say, this is one of the refreshing and enlightening books I have read in a long time...It's timely message has helped me more than I can begin to say... Dr.Gilda has answered so many questions that I have had in my heart for so very long..It is teaching me about myself and the mechanics of the female heart! The book is written from Dr. Gilda's heart to all the broken hearted and disillusioned women of our time... Surely a masterpiece that stands alone in its class! I applaud Dr. Gilda for her frankness and boldness to share and explain the complex issues of the human heart..Her motive is clear... to help the hurting and get them back on the road to recovery! I highly recommend this wonderful book to all women that are confused, disoriented, used, abused, mistreated, etc.. Get it at all costs, read it. and get back your dignity, self-confidence, pride and self-worth ! Women were created to be loved, treated tenderly and not abused! Dr. Gilda, your book is truly an answer to prayer...May you be blessed beyond measure for all the good that you do with a pure heart for all the hurting women of our time ! Love to Dr. Gilda, and to all who read this review !
Even for already-marrieds like me - tons of great advice!.......1998-05-04
I really wondered what I could get from this book after 13 years of marriage to a great guy who is also the great father of my children. But let me tell you there is so much here! The self-assessments made me realize how much more criticizing than complimenting I was doing, how I was getting too busy to play, and most of all gave communication techniques. It's true that my husband was attracted to me for the power and self-confidence I had when we first met, but so much of it had waned over time. I'm looking forward to really working on myself so that I can add that faceted sparkle to our relationship again. Thank you Dr. Gilda!
This book taught me how and why to not bet on the prince........1998-03-22
I really enjoyed reading this book. Gilda has helped me tremendously. I realize that I have bet on princes in the past but now know how to look out for them so that I can be self-confident and find a person who truly deserves me. I had been moping over an ex for 6 months until Gilda made me see the light. Thank you Gilda. Now I can get on with my life and improve myself.

Good..for Sweet Valley.......2005-06-29
Ok this one was pretty entertaining, In the first chapter Dana Larson and Aaron Dallas both say that they are through with love, and as usual, if anyone at Sweet Valley has a problem, Elizabeth is there to exploit it. Her and lamest boy ever Todd make a bet that Elizabeth can't get them together. Sound like every other SVH plot? Yeah, but its the little things that make this one great.
It deals with Dana Larsons band The Droids involved with a battle of the band contest.(PS: I always imagined the Droids to sound Flock Of Seagulls-ish with a girl singer). They decide it would be way cool for the whole band to dress up in animal print (including the dudes) and hang vines around the stage for a stage show. Cool guys. Rock n Roll.
Jessica and Lila figure if they help one of the other bands win the battle they can go with them to LA to meet their fav rockers, so they...wait, wait, decide to be roadies for a band called Spontanious Combustion. I didnt know non-touring bands needed roadies, but whatever. The book describes the band members as tall, really skinny, greasy black hair, smoking cigarettes....mmmmm I love that type, way cooler than the dorky droids right? Oh and they play loud screamy music. Awesome! Anyway take a guess, Do Dana and Aaron hook up? Do the Droids win the battle of the bands? Does Elizabeth end up crying? YOU BET!
fun book!.......2001-08-04
This is a very good book.Dana is all through with love..and so is some other boy..i cant remember his name.So Elizabeth has a good idea..she is going to plan and plot to get the two together.'its perfect' she thinks.
But Todd thinks this idea is ridiculous and the two begin a bet over the matter.
