Molto Buono.......2006-02-27
Italian for Travelers was perfect for my trip to Italy during the Olympics. The book is well organized and is instantly useful! It has inspired me to learn more about the Italian language.
bad cd.......2006-02-18
useful phrases in book, but the cd is a bit messed up. it will randomly switch from first stating the english followed by italian to then stating the italian followed by english. very hard to follow because of this. they really need to redo this.
The Italian language teacher says..........2005-12-29
It's hard to find that "perfect" Italian book or audio CD to recommend to students, because I often run into these two situations: 1) the book is too in-depth and too focused on grammar; 2) the book is too superficial and more of a phrase-book for travelers, therefore not sufficient. SO, what I usually do is use a combination of books, including audio CDs, this being one of them. It has some useful information on the culture, as well as practical expressions for the brave traveler. However, my recommendation is to take a basic course before traveling to Italy, because even knowing a few simple sentences can get you a long way. Also, in a group setting you'll be able to ask specific questions and to practice with others. I'm sure that if you check with your local community college, there are some short continuing education courses for foreign languages. Non dimenticare! Don't forget: the trick in learning a language is repetition, so any audio CD that gets you to repeat the words over and over again, is great practice. The more you repeat, the more you'll remember! It's like learning a song: you can't sing a song you've heard only 1 time, but if you hear it over and over, you'll be able to sing all the lyrics!! So, keep up the good work! [..]
Even Better in CD.......2005-07-28
Independent travelers who use this product should feel reassured that they can ask for what they need; express proper appreciation for assistance; make better informed menu choices and can even hold a friendly conversation with host country residents. Hearing native speakers repeat sounds, words and dialogs in proper cadence and accent is the key element to making the included phrasebook/dictionary usable in the real world. Although I am not an adept linguist, I have found Fodor's and Living Language products to be equally usable and equally comprehensive in meeting these needs on a basic level.
I migrated to Fodor's 2-CD Italian package from the older cassette format for ease and speed in finding and replaying spoken phrases and have been well-pleased with the results. Starting with drills for basic sounds and the alphabet, chapters build skills in vocabulary and forming sentences. Again, user repetition of the spoken models is the key to recognizing what is being said to or asked of you in a variety of standard situations and to building user comfort with reproducing the language. As with previous editions, the set includes a paperback version containing written transcriptions of the recorded passages plus a basic dictionary with phonetic transcriptions showing emphasised syllables. Users can follow along and see what they are learning to say. On tour, the 4x7-inch paperback is tote-able and, as necessary, words can be pointed out to locals. Back at the hotel, I use the paperback to plan conversations dealing with specific situations (illnesses, injuries, medicines, first aid supplies and toiletries)and try to locate some words that might be in the answers I might hear. The food vocabulary is very helpful in reading menus but works best if each traveller has some advance ideas of the names of main ingredients in the dishes and courses that might appeal. The text also contains useful background information on the country and how they handle a variety of issues of daily life. This edition omits the "vest pocket" abbridged booklet that used to come with previous sets. Having the more extensive dictionary along probably justifies this change.

Customer Reviews:
Good, this aged version slightly outdated.......2007-05-24
Used this book extensively during 2 week sojourn in Italy. Very helpful, but as this edition was several years old, some vocabulary (particularly internet, phone) out of date. Other than that content was excellent, well organized and easily usable. Good Italian to English and vice versa dictionary in back of book. Would recommend getting same book in more recent publication if availble.
Not for the beginner........2005-06-02
This book is not for someone who just wants to pick up enough Italian to get them through a trip unless they have a good ear and memory. I found "Italian in 10 Minutes a Day" much better as you must write what you learn in a workbook.
Definitely not a stand-alone tool.......2004-04-29
I strongly agreed with the reviewers who described the Fodor's CD as poorly organized, too quickly spoken, and not terribly useful. In some instances they stated the English term and then followed it with the Italian; in others they stated the Italian term first. Because there was no warning about the switch, if you're not on your toes you may find yourself repeating the wrong Italian term for the English word you believe you are translating.
The dialogues, while spoken at natural speed) are often not translated into English on the CD. You can go to the book to read the translation, but if you're using the CDs in traffic as I did, that's impossible. The CD ended so abruptly I thought perhaps my player had failed. All in all, it seemed as though the DC was designed and produced rapidly and without much thought.
The book and CD are a great combination when your goal is to learn specific vocabulary and then hear the pronunciation of those specific key words. What I learned on the first CD - particularly numbers, dates, and times - was extremely helpful during my trip to Italy. (Although I have to admit that I listened to these sections of the CD repeatedly because I knew they would be essential.) But the CD would be a much stronger tool if it were consistently organized and included translations of the dialogues.
When I had time to work on the language before my trip to Florence, I often put the Fodors CDs aside in lieu of the Michel Thomas "Speak Italian" CDs, which were also a two-CD set, but taught me the basics language rather than memorized phrases. Using Michel Thomas, I was able to construct my own, fairly complex sentences in Italy by simply looking up one or two additional vocabulary words.
In terms of a phrase book, I preferred Rick Steve's. Steve's contained more practical phrases and information - some downright amusing - and it fit better in my pocket during the trip.
CDs are poorly organized........2003-10-27
I paid full price for this set because I'm planning a trip to Italy. The book isn't bad but the CDs are pretty terrible. They have boring drills on numbers and vocabulary. Not at all interactive. The phrases are read in Italian and then English, but sometimes in English and then Italian without warning. Since I know no Italian, I had a hard time knowing which English word went with which Italian word (and since I was listening in my car, I couldn't check the book while driving to find out). All in all this is a pretty poor set of language tapes, and it's way overpriced. I'm sure one can do better.
Travel with ease.......2002-04-10
I bought the "Italian for Dummies" and this dictionary together. They complemented each other well. If you are planning on doing some traveling for a short period of time, this is more than enough for you. Even those who want to start studying seriously will benefit greatly.
However, I should warn you that in both Rome and Venice, while on vacation, usually I would try to speak Italian only to be responded to in fluent English. You definitely do not need to know Italian in Venice. It you are only going to the tourist spots, you might not need it much.
It's cheap, pocket-sized, and comprehensive. If you are planning to spend some real time in Italy, it may save your life and/or sanity on more than one occasion.

Customer Reviews:
Useful phrasebook.......2002-10-21
I found this to be a well written, detailed, and easy to use language guide. I have used a number of the Fodor language guides and travel guides over the years, as well as the ones by Lonely Planet, and I think they offer the best value for the price.
I plan on going to Europe soon, and hopefully, this guide will make it a smoother trip than the one I made to the eastern bloc some years ago.
While we're at it, I hope you don't mind if I recount a funny story that happened the last time I was in Europe.
I was in Sophia, Bulgaria, trying to ask a Bulgarian policemen where I could buy a map, which in Russian sounds like "Gedzye ya pokupaiyu carteeriye? and instead I pointed to the phrase in the Russian phrasebook which said, "Where can I find a mild laxative?" He gave me a look that indicated I hadn't quite communicated my real intent, and then I noticed where I was pointing in the phrasebook, and I guess the expression on my face did the rest, because at that point he basically realized I didn't know what the hell I was doing.
Anyway, hopefully my next trip will go smoother in the cross-cultural communication department.
Perfect for travelers.......2001-03-07
My native German friend was my personal translator but since I knew I'd be on my own half the time, I wanted to have a grasp of essential German words and expressions. I asked around for a good German program for travelers and a coworker recommended this program which didn't disappoint! The audio was great for helping me with pronunciation. What I learned in the "finding your way" section came in very handy when I was lost and needed to ask for directions back to my friend's place. The phrasebook also came in very handy especially when it came to dining out by myself. I knew I didn't want "hasenpfeffer" (spicy rabbit stew) or "eisbein" (pickled pig's knuckle)!
Excellent.......2001-02-03
This phrasebook should see you through most encounters you are likely to have as a tourist in the German speaking world. Easy to follow and well laid out, it certainly helped me through a recent trip to Germany. Apart from a minor misunderstanding with a Stuttgart hotel clerk whom I mysteriously told "I am not normally flaccid" in response to a routine credit card inquiry, I coped marvellously.
good for please and thankyou.......1999-09-05
I bought these tapes before going to Germany, and found them useful in asking questions, such as, "Do you have a room available", but the only problem is that they don't really brief you on responces...understanding what people would answer back was quite confusing.

Customer Reviews:
This book was invaluable to us.......2004-07-23
My husband and I travelled to Spain for our honeymoon knowing very little Spanish (cerveza, por favor and gracias were basically it). This book helped us to communicate with ease. The book is organized by situation to allow you to find stuff quickly, and also includes a small dictionary. Its small size made it easy to carry with us everywhere. We also carried the Living Language Spanish-English dictionary to help us translate specific words, but to put them in phrases that actually made sense we used this book. We will definitely buy other phrasebooks by Fodor's for our next trip.
Outstanding.......2003-02-25
I have this book and several other Spanish language books. This is the best of the lot. It has a dictionary of most common words, a useful phase section with pronunciation and useful information about Spain and Latin America. It is worth every bit of the price. Es muy bueno.
No hablo Espanol!.......2003-01-28
I'll get straight to the point: Do NOT buy this unless you have a basic, solid knowledge of Spanish already.
This CD set is comprised of phrases, first said in Enlish, then repeated in Spanish. The Spanish pronunciation is difficult to understand without the book in front of you- which is confusing to follow.
This CD set does not teach grammar, pronouns, tenses, etc. It only teaches phrases- complete sentences.
In order to benefit from this set, you will need to already understand some basic verbs and pronouns (gender and formalities) or you will become lost very quickly.
This CD set is only good if you need to quickly memorize phrases for traveling- but remember, you will also need to UNDERSTAND what people say to you. It's better to learn the basic language skills than to memorize, "Where is the bus station?" and realize you have no idea what the response means!
I recommend starting with a "Teach Yourself Spanish" course first. That will give you a good foundation.
phrases are spoken too fast!.......2003-01-27
The audio with this book has useful phrases that would be great to learn before your trip, however the phrases are spoken to quickly for a beginner to learn. Also, the format is inconsistent. In the beginning they start off first giving you the word/phrases in english followed by spanish. Then, without any warning, it changes to giving you the spanish word first and then the english. This makes learning even more difficult. This is not a good program for beginners. Maybe if you have taken spanish classes and know some basic spanish vocabulary, grammer, and phonics then this would be a helpful review. If you are a beginner like me with one semester in college completed years ago this program is not for you.
A must have for any trip to a Spanish speaking country!.......2001-03-05
I picked this up before a trip to Guadalajara, and it really came in handy. It was simple to use and full of exactly the words I was looking for. I practiced with the cassettes on the plane, and then I brought the phrasebook everywhere - shopping, sightseeing, eating out, and (unfortunately) to the pharmacy for, um, an emergency. It even helped me there, although I wish the situation to test that particular area of usefulness hadn't come up. Really a great buy and a fantastic way to stretch those two years of high school Spanish I barely remember.

Customer Reviews:
Spanish for Travelers on the "small side".......2000-09-19
The book is a great Spanish phrase book with useful phrases for travelers broken down into useful categories. Particularly useful is a pronunciation guide.
The biggest let-down with this book was its size and page format. Although I exepected this traveler's phrase book to be small, I didn't expect it to be as small as it is. It measures 2.25"x3.25" and is a magnetic type book with all the pages connected together in an accorian style. I personally wish the book were a bit larger with traditionally stitched pages.

Book Description
What would you do if you were sitting quietly in your living room when a mysterious couple appeared from out of nowhere - and then told you they were "ascended masters" who had come to reveal some shocking secrets of existence and teach you the miraculous powers of advanced forgiveness? Would you call the cops? Call a psychiatrist? Call out for pizza?
When two such teachers appeared before Gary Renard in 1992, he chose to listen to them (and ask a lot of impertinent questions). The result is this startling book: an extraordinary record of 17 mind-bending conversations that took place over nearly a decade, reorienting the author's life and giving the world an uncompromising introduction to a spiritual teaching destined to change human history.
Customer Reviews:
For serious spiritual seekers only.......2007-10-17
The first time I read this book, it messed me up for about ten months. I no longer knew what to think or believe about all the spiritual concepts I had been studying and practicing for many years. In the end, though, it literally changed the way I perceive reality. As a result of reading the book I learned to live life without beliefs. Now life is split up between what I know through direct experience, what I think might be "truth" or the way things work until I learn differently, and what I just don't know. It is not necessary to be a student of A Course in Miracles to benefit from reading this book, but if you have very strong beliefs about the way things are, this is a book that will challenge them from nearly the beginning to the end. For all the difficulty I had with the cognitive shifts that reading this book provoked, my life is clearly better for having read it
The disappearance of the Universe.......2007-10-11
This is one of those books that includes lots of Ahaaaa moments. One of the best books that I have read in a long time. I would recommend it to any one that is either considering or doing a Course in Miracles.
You definately need to be open minded to read this.......2007-10-09
This is interesting and different from anything I'd ever read before! I don't believe everyone should read this book. I know many people who are just not ready or open minded enough to accept some of what's covered/proposed here and would end up vehemently opposing it. The first time I read this I honestly didn't know what to think. I was shocked really. Many of the things this guy was saying was just out of bounds of the 'conditioning' I grew up with. I initially checked this out from the library and returned it without having made it thru the first chapter. Then, several weeks later, I ordered it kind of by accident (a recommendation from another source)and was surprised to see that this was the same book I had checked out and returned mostly unread. I think things happen for a reason, and so I thought obviously I was supposed to read this book.
This guy has had the experience of two spiritual instructors who materialize to him on several different occassions and set him straight on how things really are. They are from his past and his future. As far as the information they conveyed, I'm thinking, how could they know all of those things if they were not who they claimed to be, and why would they and Gary lie about it? Some things were easier for me to accept than others. But, that doesn't mean that I don't believe it all, it just means that I don't exactly understand it all, so therefore I won't say that it's not true, because I really don't know. Some things I just need to think about a little longer I guess.
I still pick this up and read it now and then. I have underlined and made notes to myself which I have found helpful. I was glad to have read this before I started 'A Course In Miracles'. Otherwise, I think I would have had a harder time with that. This was like a primer to get me ready for the concepts presented in ACIM.
This book has the power to change the world!.......2007-10-03
I am recommending this book whenever and wherever I have the chance to. I suffered all my life from a traumatic and tragic childhood until I read this book and began practicing true forgiveness. Mr.Renard's teachings showed me a new way to view this world and a new way to forgive. My life is forever changed. If I can heal from sexual assault, deaths, and a lifetime of suicidal depression than so can others. This book has the power to change the world, one life at a time.
Everyone must read this book!.......2007-10-01
This is a life changing book. A must read by everyone. I loved it.
