Book Description

"The desire of individuals and groups to puff themselves up by imposing their vision on other people is a recurring theme in the culture wars"

Thomas Sowell takes on a range of legal, social, racial, educational, and economic issues--along with "the culture wars"--in this latest collection of his controversial, never boring, always thought-provoking essays. From "gun control myths" to "mealy mouth media" to "free lunch medicine," Sowell gets to the heart of the matters we all care about with his characteristically unswerving candor.

Sowell skewers the "mealy mouth media" that calls terrorists "insurgents" and rioters "demonstrators." He reveals how "the idiocy of relevance" in learning has been particularly destructive in the education of minority students at all levels. He explains how a free market and a strict construction of the 14th Amendment would never have permitted the laws that asked Rosa Parks to give up her seat to a white man. And he clarifies the confusion between equal opportunity and equal results that resides behind many kinds of "spoiled brat politics."

With Ever Wonder Why?--drawn from the best of his popular syndicated newspaper columns--Sowell once again takes dead aim at the self-righteous and self-important forces in government, media, education, and other areas of our society, offering the thoughtful perceptions, commonsense insights, and straightforward honesty we have come to expect from one of conservatism's most articulate voices.

Thomas Sowell is a senior fellow at the Hoover Institution, Stanford University. Among his published works are Basic Economics, Late Talking Children, and Race and Culture. He has also published in both academic journals and the popular media including Newsweek, Forbes, the Wall Street Journal, and 150 newspapers that carry his nationally syndicated column.

2 out of 5 stars Smug Sowell overextends himself, not a worthy read.......2007-08-29

I was really looking forward to reading this book having read some of Sowell's writing and considering myself very conservative.

I was dissapointed. Most of the ideas in the book are written about with generalizations and written in a rather smug fashion('I am an economist so I view things in a more sophisticated way' kind of feel to it). I was very interested in some of the subjects but was dissapointed to find that a lot of his writing consisted of conservative liberal rants instead of actual substance. I also found some of his reasoning just plain stupid.

For example, in an essay on the trade deficit in the U.S. Sowell tries to argue that we are only concerned about it because of Liberal propaganda and in fact its fine for the government to be in so much debt because the private sector is earning more money now than ever before. He compares it to himself and Donald Trump, saying that Trump probably has more debt than he does but he is still worth more money in the end of the day.
Basically he criticizes liberals for talking about how under the bush administration the deficit has gotten out of control saying that they are just doing that for political reasons. I dont know if he thinks deficits or being in debt is a good thing but he dodges that question entirely. All I could get is that he thinks its fine to have a $7 trillion deficit.

There are tons of poorly written essays like this in his book. If you like the way that sounds than I would reccomend reading Rush or Coulter, at least those are a little more entertaining and a little more outspoken. Sowell's writing is smug and is overextending his extensive knowledge of economics into the realm of political name calling and pointing fingures. It really isn't worth the read. If you want to read about econ however his "basic economics" is a long but solid examination of conservative economic principles.

1 out of 5 stars Not recommended.......2007-08-23

I do apprecaited views from conservative authors but this is no more than a collection of "bitching" points. The chapters are short, raise some questions, but offers little in the way of answers. Lots of sweeping generalizations without specifics to back the point. If you want some substance stick to Ann Coulter and pass this one by.

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant, as always........2007-03-13

You can't read Sowell and not learn something, ever. You do have to take it in small steps though. There's just too many great insights per chapter in this book by one of the greatest thinkers of our time.
It's too bad he's not only in his 40's. I'd love to see him keep writing for another 50 years!

5 out of 5 stars Libs don't get it.......2007-02-19

Thomas Sowell explains things so well. It is so easy to understand economics when it is explained in context with basic human nature. I really do "Wonder Why" libs are sooo... baffled by capitalism and freedom.

5 out of 5 stars Sowell's best.......2007-02-07

This book is a series of Sowell's newspaper columns, and, as usual, provokes thought, makes sense, and lays bare the many myths of our times. I have always enjoyed his books, but this one is easiest to read in short bursts because of the necessarily small size of the chapter, each of which had to fit a newspaper column in it's day.

5 out of 5 stars I can stop wondering.......2007-09-02

I found this little book full of information. I now give this book out as gifts to friends and they love it too!!! I hope a new one will come out for me to wonder even less.

4 out of 5 stars Surprisingly small.......2007-04-05

Very interesting book but it was surprisingly small. I've bought other fact books and this one was filled with new outlooks and interesting answers such as "Why do we toast before drinking?" and "Why are tennis balls fuzzy?"
If you're looking for something like this try Why Do Men Have Nipples? Hundreds of Questions You'd Only Ask a Doctor After Your Third Martini and the book's sequel Why Do Men Fall Asleep After Sex?: More Questions You'd Only Ask a Doctor After Your Third Whiskey Sour. Another good one is 2201 Fascinating Facts: 2 Vols. in One.

4 out of 5 stars A really great compilation of everyday questions and answers.......2006-08-08

The question "Why?" is the most difficult question to answer. Douglas B. Smith put together a compilation of more than 200 questions about everyday sayings and trends so people may not take them for granted. The word "piggybank", for example, did not originate with the pig, the farm animal that says "oink, oink", but the orange clay of old European dishes and cookware, called "pygg". Wedding and marital traditions are covered extensively, and so are nautical expressions. One example of the latter is the "devil", as in "there'll be the devil to pay" and "between the devil and the deep blue sea"; that is the hard-to-reach seam, below the waterline most of the time, on a ship built with wood. It is so good a read it even addresses the simple question that many children wonder, like "Why is the sky blue?"
This book even explains -- in the preface -- the origin of the preface, and contains an eight-page index. A "must read" for those who are curious about everyday phenomena. I also recommend the "Imponderables" series and "More Ever Wonder Why".

5 out of 5 stars This book is great!.......2005-01-02

This book really is great! I have never before had a book that every single member of my family actually fights over!! My little brother, my big sister, my mom, and my dad:every single one of us loves this book! It has taught me so many great facts! I even was awarded a free bottle of champagne on an airplane recently thanks to this book: a woman had a nose bleed the whole flight and this book explained how nose bleeds can be reduced or stopped by putting an ice pack on the back of your neck, and guess what it worked!! On top of that, once we reached our destination, all the people in our tour group would beg me to read excerpts of this book to them and the people in our tour group came from all over the world, from England to Gautemala- almost every single one of them wanted to purchase this book by the end of our trip! If you are considering purchasing this book..do it! I promise you will not regret it-this book is way too great to pass up!

1 out of 5 stars A Real Letdown.......2001-11-28

When I was first given this book as a gift, I was quite excited. I am a trivia buff and the questions being answered in the book were really fun subjects. As I read, however, I quickly became suspicious. Why didn't the author allow virtually any room for multiple explanations of the origins of phrases and customs? How could he possibly have done the research required to answer all these questions thoroughly? Why did he seem to answer almost all questions with such certainty, even those with a brief explanation?

Doing some research of my own on a few questions (why is sidespin in pool called English, for example) and found that the author is often just passing on apocrophyl stories and urban legends. It seems as though mostly he researched perhaps one or two sources to answer each question.

Since getting to the bottom of urban legends and myths are what caused me to get so interested in trivia in the first place, I found this book a real letdown.

My family enjoyed reading this book, it really answers questions you may have always wondered about black people but were not comfortable asking. It really is a book for everyone you will find yourself saying oh now I get it, along with getting good laughs. You will want to share this book with friends and family. I highly recommend this book!!!

5 out of 5 stars Light-hearted Read!!.......2007-06-24

I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book! It is a very quick read and has a very comic take on some of the questions that some of us have (& are ashamed to ask!). I whole-heartedly reccommed this book... you will laugh while realizing that all of our "differences" is what makes the world go 'round!

4 out of 5 stars Why do black people have rhythm?.......2007-04-24

A fascinating little book filled with things that non-blacks might have wondered about "black people" but were afraid to ask, lest the question be perceived as offensive. Kevin Moore addresses some of the more common wonderings in a humorous and forthright fashion. Black people will no doubt chuckle to learn how practices they take for granted can seem so curious to others! A great way to begin tearing down the walls between the races.

4 out of 5 stars Did You Ever Wonder????.......2007-04-12

I thought the book was very good! Funny and informative with a different perspective. Serious and yet humorous, the authors experiences have obviously prompted him to write this book- with the intention of sharing information with the "majority". I think you'll enjoy it!

5 out of 5 stars WHY? Do You Ever Wonder Why?.......2002-10-27

This book is like having a decade of therapy wrapped up into
192 pages. It really taught me so much about "LIFE"! I learned
more about myself than ever before, and I also found out how I
can improve my own life successfully -- simply by the way I look
at everything or everyone. I even learned about WHY people do
the things that they do, and I also found spiritual answers
              [about GOD] too!

I have recommended this book to all of my friends...I even heard
that the author did the ENTIRE book by herself - with no outside
help - isn't that amazing? When you read the text, it feels as
if she is talking "directly" to you. When you get your copy,
you will see + hear exactly what I experienced!

This book is almost the same price of a CD, but it's worth every
penny + more! If you think about it, when you listen to an
album, that's ALL you get -- a temporary moment of "tunes" that
you probably don't play for the rest of your life...BUT if you
think about entertaining yourself with "education" like this
instead, your entire life changes for better, and everyone wants
a better life. I can finally say that I have one now!

Millions of men lived in the trenches during World War I. More than six million died there. In Eye-Deep in Hell, the author explores this unique and terrifying world--the rituals of battle, the habits of daily life, and the constant struggle of men to find meaning amid excruciating boredom and the specter of impending death.

              Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A Great View of Life in the Trenches.......2006-05-12

Eye Deep in Hell by John Ellis was a good social history of trench life on the Western Front in World War I. The author's description of social history during the war reminded me of Geoffrey Parker's The Spanish Road. It seemed like a rather dismal existence, hence the title. Ellis divided his book into four parts and subdivided into chapters, each covering a different aspect of trench life.
Part I, "In the Line" was about daily life in the trenches. Ellis wrote about the design of trenches and the concept of defense in depth, which was a basic military history. According to the author, then northern sector (where the British were stationed) must have been the worst region because of all the rains and mud; afterall, one must consider how many soldiers drowned at Paschendale. Other factors, including a poor diet, rats, disease, lack of sanitation, which helped bring about the disease, and trench foot, all contributed to making the soldiers miserable. The German soldiers had it worst in terms of diet because the British blockade virtually halted their ability to import food from overseas.
The part on combat was a pretty basic description of military history during the war. All of the weapons from artillery to poison gas, to machine guns were mentioned. Unfortunately, the generals had little understanding of how to use these advanced weapons, and that resulted in the needless slaughter of countless soldiers. I was most interested in the military actions that were not conventional battles, such as patrols and raids because I knew nothing about them before reading Eye Deep in Hell. I was also surprised to read that there were times when soldiers would make it a point to spare the enemy, such as the incident where a Canadian soldier walked too close to a German trench in foggy weather, and the Germans told him to go back to his own trench or he would get shot. I was surprised that the soldiers were not necessarily scared when they entered combat (where there was a good chance that they would be killed). The soldiers were in a daze when the went over the top.
"A Lighter Side" was about entertainment and recreation in the trenches. They had a variety of different activities, including sporting matches, plays, concerts. There were also the time-honored forms of recreation for soldiers of gambling and visiting prostitutes. As in all wars, letters from home were a great diversion for soldiers. I was surprised about how strictly the alcohol intake was regulated for soldiers, and how the officers actually managed to enforce it. Soldiers used to drink like fish in other wars. Naturally, it was a great blessing for soldiers to be able to go on leave. It was harder for English or American soldiers because their homes and families were far away. The amount of leaves granted increased towards the end of the war to improve morale.
I found the least section on Attitude to be the most interesting. While I knew that there was the "Christmas Truce" in 1914, I did not know that there were similar truces during the war. It is hard for me to understand how the soldiers did not necessarily hate each other despite the propaganda during the time (English soldiers were curious to see what the Huns were like, only to find them normal people). If I was in the army right now, I would have no desire to do anything to an Al Queda terrorist than to fill him with lead. While I knew of the French mutiny of 1917, I did not know that the British army was on the verge of a similar mutiny, and the two nations did what they could to improve their soldiers' lives in the final year of the war. Despite this mutinies and a few other forms of protest, most soldiers joined the army and did what they could "to do their duty," which seemed to be the book's overall theme.
I considered Eye Deep in Hell to be a good read. It was informative, it was easy-reading, and had descriptive pictures. There were two things that I would have liked to have been able to see. Although Ellis wrote about the Western Front, it would have helped if he made reference to other fronts; I would have been interested to read about the cold weather and starvation in the east or the sheer slaughter in Italy, as it is virtually impossible to wage a successful offensive in the Alps. While Ellis provided many quotes from soldiers to add the common man's perspective, I wish that he could have provided more quotes from soldiers who fought in the trenches and went on to other things after the war. While he did quote poet Siegfried Sassoon, it would have been interesting to hear what some others such as J.R.R. Tolkein, Adolf Hitler, or Harry S. Truman had to say.

3 out of 5 stars Different Way of Telling the WWI Story of Waste.......2006-02-04

Ellis doesn't produce anything new or different in terms of his evaluation of life in the trenches. The unique feature of the book is that it recounts history from the standpoint of the personal experience rather from the sequence of battles fought. The material is a review of much contained in the first person accounts of Sassoon, Graves, Barbusse and Junger. Eye Deep is a relatively short work but presents little new in view of the classic works of World War I. It might be a good explanation of the personal tragedy of the soldiers involved for a reader not very knowledgeable of the conditions encountered in the trenches of World War I.

              5 out of 5 stars Must Read.......2005-10-27

World War I deserves to be understood; that is, what the soldiers in that war experienced deserves to be known. Now that probably all WWI veterans are passed, it is more imperative that we not forget this history. This book really sheds no light on the politics of the war, or the strategy, or really even the big picture history of the war. But, if the "how" (not the "why") of WWI and trench warfare is puzzling to you, this will clear it up. Easy reading, but quite informative.

4 out of 5 stars Postales desde el frente.......2004-02-27

                Book Description

An exceptional photographic history of the changing face of war through 150 years.

From the Crimean War and American Civil War through the two World Wars, from Vietnam to the Balkans and Afghanistan, photographers have been drawn to the battlefront. This book selects 200 of the most powerful war photographs, together with poignant testaments by soldiers and battlefield witnesses, to make an unforgettable tableau. Among these arresting images are Mathew Brady's Civil War pictures from Gettysburg; those taken from the Cape to Cairo during the colonial "Scramble for Africa"; those from the armageddon of the First World War; the World War II photos of Robert Capa and Margaret Bourke-White; and those of Don McCullin and Larry Burrows from Vietnam. The brute strength of military hardware is contrasted with the vulnerability of the human body, as artillery, tanks, planes, and aircraft carriers are set against infantry. Heart-stopping images of the trenches in WWI, the empty steppes of Russia during WWII, and the street fighting in Afghanistan testify to the skill of the photographers. 150 color, 50 b/w photographs.

                Book Description

Frank "Lindy" Fancher was born May 19, 1919 in rural Hart County, Kentucky, the son of Ben Fancher a Tobacco farmer. In October of 1940, he enlisted in the 106th Cavalry Illinois National Guard and entered Federal Training on December 6th 1940. Thus began Lindy's military experience, one that would forever leave indelible memories of great sorrow and joy. This is the story of those experiences. It is a story for this generation and future ones that reminds us that freedom is not "free" and that this country was won through hardship and bloodshed. It is also a story of the transition from boyhood to manhood and how the war forever changed that.

5 out of 5 stars An authentic account of one man's World War II experiences.......2005-07-13

This is not literature or anything like a Stephen Ambrose book. It's a simple account of one man's experiences during World War II. It's written in a conversational style that one might find while sitting in the bar of a local VFW or American Legion post.

Mr. Fancher tells his story. It's funny, tragic, heroic and honest. His courage during the Battle of the Bulge (where he recieved his Battlefield Commission) and during his campaign in Germany (where he received the Silver Star) are nothing short of remarkable. He also shares some escapades during his time in Paris prior to and during V-E Day that make this book inappropriate for younger audiences.

It took a tremendous amount of courage to live through that time and even more to write about it so candidly. If you enjoy hearing an old soldier's story in his own words, than this is the right book for you.

This is one of the best books ever written on the experience of the common soldier in World War II (or of any war). Ellis shows remarkable range in examining the reaction of Allied soldiers in WW II (in Africa, Europe, and Asia) to the experience and stress of combat and war. There is not a false note in this book. Thorough, moving, insightful, and complete.

This is a AIR FORCE INST OF TECH WRIGHT-PATTERSON AFB OH report procured by the Pentagon and made available for public release. It has been reproduced in the best form available to the Pentagon. It is not spiral-bound, but rather assembled with Velobinding in a soft, white linen cover. The Storming Media report number is A050913. The abstract provided by the Pentagon follows: The rising number and importance of Department of Defense software developments, when combined with declining defense budgets, has resulted in a critical need to accurately plan and manage software development costs and schedules. Unfortunately, the increasing size, complexity, and diversity of these software developments has made accurate estimating problematic. Uncalibrated software cost models have not generally produced reliable results due to generic default parameters and improper usage. The default parameters cannot hope to accurately represent and predict the wide variability of software efforts to which the models are being applied. However, some of the models have achieved improved accuracy by calibration from their generic default parameters to new parameter values based on specific characteristics of the development efforts being estimated. This research effort focused on the calibration of SoftCost-R, Version 8.4, to specific stratified data sets obtained from the Space and Missile Systems Center (SMC) Software Database, Version 2.1, (SWDB). The accuracy of the new calibrated inputs was verified through comparisons between the calibrated and default estimates and the actual cost data. Statistical methods used to make the comparisons included magnitude of relative error (MRE), mean magnitude of relative error (MMRE), root mean square (RMS), relative root mean square (RRMS), and prediction level Pred (k/n) or percentage of estimates within (100 * k/n)% of the actual costs.
