5 out of 5 stars concise and intense.......2007-10-17

I bought this book years ago when I first studied Portuguese and used it intensely when I was in Brazil. Now that I have started to study again after many years away from the language, am finding it a great review. It's something I can just put in my purse and if I have a few moments, can look something up easily. For a beginner, I would recommend this along with another grammar book, but for a good thorough review, this is fantastic.

4 out of 5 stars Simple, concise.......2007-07-03

5 reasons to get this book:
1) Easy to read
2) Well laid out
3) Helpful coupled with another language book or cd
4) Small, portable
5) Inexpensive!

This book has helped me in my quest to learn Portuguese. It outlines the basic structure of Portuguese from simple verbs, conjugations and tenses.

I highly recommend this book with Behind the Wheel Portuguese. Read my review under BtWP for more information!

5 out of 5 stars good reference.......2007-05-04

this book can be a good reference source for those learning portuguese. it's a small, dense book composed purely of grammar rules. you'll definitely need other sources to supplement this one. i used this book while i was in brazil learning portuguese and it was very helpful in clarifying any grammar doubts i had.
each small grammar section includes some examples to help give some context.

this is a far from comprehensive resource for studying portuguese but can be a helpful part of the armament.

5 out of 5 stars What the doctor ordered........2006-11-05

Bought this book in preparation for a trip to Brazil. Knowing Spanish already I was able to grasp Portuguese grammar quickly with the help of this book. It did not prepare me well, however, for the use of the pronoun "voce" (the Brazilian form of "you"). However, if you already know Spanish and are looking for a crash course, this is a good choice.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent When Used With Behind the Wheel Portuguese.......2006-03-27

Alexander Da R. Prista's Essential Portuguese Grammar gives the reader a clear cut
tool for understanding the complexities of the Portuguese language.
One may use this guide only to study the written language, which is fine.
My personal goal is to speak Portuguese fluently.
To that end I have invested in and am using 'Behind the Wheel Portuguese' which is a marvellous and highly effective course, but contains no written material whatsoever.
For that reason I find Essential Portuguese Grammar to be so 'essential'.
I'm sure this guide would work well for anyone desiring to learn Portuguese at any level, but I can attest to its effectiveness when used with a good recorded CD course like Behind the Wheel Portuguese which uses no grammar at all and rather simply teaches you to 'speak' and 'understand' the language.
I wanted to go further into the grammatical understanding of the language and also wished to learn to write the language a bit.
I am very pleased with my results and am speaking the language quite fluently already.

Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars Apontamentos de estudante.......2006-04-08

This book resembles my apontamentos de estudante (student notes) when I was a beginner learner of Portuguese. It is far from being an authoritative grammar book that will lead you to the mastery of Portuguese, as it appears to think it is. It lacks the background knowledge of the language that will enable to streamline what is important and what comes second. It is very much, as I said, a tentative work of a beginner learner, not the competent guide a master can devise. Not good enough.

As someone who can speak the language quite well, I was asked my opinion on this book. That is how I came across it. Here it is my opinion, not just for the learner who asked me but for all the learners looking for good books who may read this review. Look elsewhere is my advice.

4 out of 5 stars Review of Portuguese Verbs And Essentials of Grammar.......2006-01-12

Concerning my background, I am the founder of Learing Spanish Like Crazy and the author of several articles on How to Learn Spanish. I have also been learning Portuguese for several years now. And now for my review of Portuguese Verbs & Essentials of Grammar.

I give this book 4 stars because it squeezes an enormous amount of grammar into a relatively small book. I have been learning Portuguese for several years now. And I realize that many of the learning-Portuguese materials are pale renditions of the available learning-Spanish materials.

Portuguese Verbs & Essentials of Grammar is an exception to that rule. It covers all of the topics that you would expect to find in one of the top Spanish grammar books (but of course in Portuguese), including regular verbs, irregular verbs, reflexive verbs, the subjunctive mood, commands, the passive voice, por and para, and more.

Admittedly, the book does not cover the topics in as much detail as some of the more popular Spanish grammar books, but as its title suggests, it covers the "Essentials of Grammar."

1 out of 5 stars What is this book for?.......2004-05-19

If this book is for a beginner, then it should give better basic information on the language. Everything is oversimplified, and much is misleading. Some statements are positively wrong, like saying that the gender of words for people and animals is determined by the sex. Not always, eg, 'pessoa', 'crocodilo', and many other examples. A beginner also does not need to learn things like the archaic form for the second person, used in church services. Equally not for the beginner are the complicated tenses that usually you can find in more advanced grammars, like 'we would not have visited the castle' (nao teriamos visitado o castelo) or I would have been speaking (eu teria estado a falar / falando).

If this is for someone who already knows the basics and wants to brush up his or her Portuguese (my case), then the reader spots the flaws. Flaws are not just oversimplifications and misleading statements; there are also true mistakes. In particular need of revision are the sections on the personal infinitive, the passice voice, and radical changing verbs etc.

4 out of 5 stars very adequate.......2003-11-24

My jaw dropped at reading the horrible reviews of this book so I followed the advice and bought Prista's, expecting to see some magic and here's what I found.

Prista's book, though ok, is NOWHERE near as thorough as this one. This small book, by Sue Tyson-Ward, covers just about every section of portuguese you will need to be a fully functional speaker and I credit what I've learned to this book. I speak Portuguese with native speakers who correct me when necessary and I can say that they don't do that so often.

I see Prista's book as something for someone who is in a massive rush and who will not grasp the necessary intricacies of the language because the explanations are chopped short for the sake of saying SEE, WE TOLD YOU IT WOULD BE SHORT!

I confidently recommend the book on this page for those who need thorough explanations backed with examples. Prista's book has some pros - for example clever ways to remember Port words by learning english suffix equivalencies, etc., but at the end of the day you will walk away from the Tyson-Ward book with the capability to to read and speak Portuguese on a high conversational and literary level.

1 out of 5 stars Self-promoting and flawed.......2003-10-23

When i bought this book i looked up the word 'pessoa'. This means person and plural 'pessoas' means people. Grammatically this word is always feminine but applies to both male and female. This does not fit in with what this grammar teaches. I sought help. Then i was shown several faults in this book. The worst apears to be the verbs.

I bought this book because i believed what it says, that it is a practical guide to the mastery of Portuguese. I fell for it and am quite annoyed with myself for being so gullible. Perhaps some good will come out of this bad experience. If this review stops other learners from making the same mistake, then it wasn't a cmplete waste of time and money.

Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars A poor effort.......2005-07-09

This grammar describes Lisbon variety of Continental Portuguese and misses to explain other usages, especially Brazilian Portuguese ones, which limits its range of functionality. The grammar is not particularly friendly of colloquialisms and it is more appropriate for those interested in old literature. Using the language explained here will certainly cause strange looks, not only in Brazil, but in some parts of Portugal as well. This is such a poor effort, it almost hurts to have to write this review.

1 out of 5 stars Horrible, but sadly, not atypical of most grammars .......2005-04-14

This book is great if you want to learn European Portuguese, but if your interest lies in the most wide spread form of Portuguese, in other words, Brazilian Portuguese, it's worthless. Not only does it gloss over Brazilian Portuguese and treat it like a subcategory of the European dialect even though Brazilian is spoken by nearly 30 times as many people, but it treats the real spoken language of the Brazilian people as though it were erroneous, even though any linguistic worth his salt knows that there is no good or bad language, only official and unofficial, and that language is in a constant state of change. Seriously, don't buy this book and support this author's eurocentric egotism unless you really have you heart set on spending time in Portugal and never in Brazil, because if you speak this way in Brazil, you will sound archaic and will probably have trouble understanding what people say to you, because it's so incredibly different. I have no probably with European Portuguese; I've been to Portugal and it's a truly lovely place, but a good Portuguese grammar should tell you how to communicate in both places without placing such heavy emphasis on one, particularly the much, much smaller one with only 10 million speakers and it most certainly should not treat what native speakers use in their daily lives like unintelligent prattle and more or less lie about what people say out of his desire to preserve the language in a state is has not been in for nearly century.

4 out of 5 stars Quite good but..........2004-11-14

This grammar book is better than most. I like the well organised way materials are presented, systematically numbered, so you can find the item you want. The index is helpful too.

The book is well balanced with a fair amount of detail on everything except perhaps verbs. There could have been more detail there. For detail on verbs you have better buy another book, and Portuguese Verbs Explained by Manuela Cook is the one I have bought and am quite pleased with.

More detail could have been given to grammar points in this grammar if space had been used more appropriately. There is a whole section on historical and cultural notes including literature, music, cinema, etc. As interesting as all this may be, it has nothing to do with grammar. If I wanted a book on music or cinema, I had bought one. In a grammar what I expect is grammar!

5 out of 5 stars A grammar that won't let you down.......2004-10-11

I am a student of Portuguese and have tried other grammars. Hoping to economise on money, first I went for some cheaper books but I regret it now. Since the late nineties the mass market has been littered with a number of sub standard Portuguese grammars. This grammar is a fortunate exception and I am glad I have bought it. You pay more but you get a grammar you can feel comfortable with, you can trust it will not let you down, unlike some amateurish grammars that do not know what they are talking about and confuse more than help.

This grammar helps by giving you info you feel you can rely on and by the way this info is presented. It is all very well organised, each section is numbered, so you can find what you are looking for. The index is quite long, and you can find everything there. It gives you the section number for what you are looking for. Sometimes a page number would be easier but you can't go wrong with section numbers. This is a grammar I can recommend to any learner of Portuguese.

4 out of 5 stars Concise and yet complete.......2000-12-11

This book is an excellent tool for intermediate learners. It covers both European and Brazilian Portuguese. But there are two drawbacks: 1) The book should have listed the alphabets and their pronunciations (e.g. how to pronounce the foreign-borrowed letter 'k' in Portuguese.) 2) Chapter seven: 'verbs': this chapter should be the core of this book. The authors, however, do not give the English meanings of the irregular verbs they list in this chapter. They provide the English tranlations of everything but the irregular verbs presented in chapter seven. This is weird. Overall, this book is highly recommended for intermediate learners to review and grasp a solid understanding to the verbs and grammars of the language.

            5 out of 5 stars Great Book.......2007-04-02

So I didn't actually want to read this book, but had to for a class I was taking...

It was great! Absolutely loved the book!!!

Gave me a lot of insight into a very competitive gymnast friend of mine :)

3 out of 5 stars The view of a twelve year old gymnast.......2006-07-22

I am a 12-year-old elite gymnast, in training for the 2012 Olympics!

Here are some amazing things in this book.

Did you know that a young gymnast called Adriana was murdered by her coach?

It does not, however, tell the story of Australian gymnast Sophie Gilligan, who at 13 looked 6. An Olympic prospect at age 13, but she was turned down by the olympic selectors because she was too young. Her obese stage mother told the tiny, 66-pound Sophie off. Later that day, the depressed, sad Sophie beat both her mother and her cute, chubby 4-year-old sister Molli to death, then committed suicide. She was a great and promising gymnast, and we lost her.

3 out of 5 stars It is how gymnastics is.......2006-04-29

I know that many gymnasts are anarexec, but that is just that happens in gymnastics.

It is sad, but you must be thin and small to be a perfect gymnast, and they will just keep getting smaller, thinner and younger. I am twelve, but I have reached puberty, so I will never be the ideal gymnast.

MAny gymnasts do not fit the mould of tiny thin and light. I mean when i was only ten, i was ideal, at four feet and six inches and probably 52pound sprite. But now I have grown to 4feet 10 inches and about 108 pounds, so I will never be able to be what i was when i was ten.

It is sad that the womanly, graceful gymnasts are not considered good as the tiny, tumbling pixies. But that is just how gymnasyics. Soon, 8-11 year old gymnasts will be big names, like nz gymnast Lily West, junior New Zealand champion at age 9.

Now, gymnastical girls are coming in as young as 9-10 years. They are tiny, maybe 36 pounds at 10! And they are thin and flat chested. Because that is the ideal gymnast.

3 out of 5 stars THE CHANGE OF GYMNASTIC.......2006-03-28

Olivia was eleven. she wanted to be a gymnast so she was watching olga Korbut live at the olymips she noticed that Olga Korbut was skinny and perpurspent at 36kg .but olivia had breasts and hips and was plump at 120 pounds but she wanted to be a gymnast but if olga changed gymnastic she could not join, because the sport would be for tiny skinny preprubesnt girls aged 13-15 that they would stary gymnastics at age3,4,5,6,. It would be too late for Olivia sha hd to stop olga so she ran onto the floor and olga's feet plummeted into her fat stomach and Olgs Korbut was mad and she jumped on Olivias tummy and olivia felt allhot and sick she rubbed her sore tummy but she sicked all over the floor and since olga jumped and upset olivia's tummy she also had diarea as she was sicking.

and that is the story of how olivia missed her chance at the olumpics and lots of other girls too

5 out of 5 stars behind the glamour.......2005-11-09

Ever see a gymnast or a figure skater on TV and wonder just how they got their bodies to do that? This book goes behind the scenes and charts the often painful steps these girls go through on the road to the Olympics. It isn't pretty. The various subjects Ryan profiled developed eating disorders in record numbers, as well as exacerbated injuries while refusing to rest. Ryan describes the abuse these girls suffer at the hands of their coaches and parents, who push them relentlessly to be the best. In one example, an Olympic hopeful became paralyzed attempting a vault that was too difficult for her level of expertise, and who eventually died as a result. And figure
skating has its share of horror stories, the Nancy Kerrigan-Tonya Harding being the most famous. Ryan calls for reforms, noting that girls are still children and their welfare must be looked after. It's impossible to watch gymnastics or figure skating after reading this book without looking for the pain behind the cheers and smiling faces.

            MARTIN PRING ON TECHNICAL ANALYSIS

McGraw-Hill's Martin Pring on Technical Analysis series introduced individual investors to the value and legitimacy of technical analysishelped by the worldrenowned Martin Pring brand. Each book focuses on explaining and demonstrating one of the key tools of technical analysis, while the interactive CD-ROM/workbook format helps traders develop their technical analysis skills.

The Martin Pring on Technical Analysis series is a compelling new chapter in supplying accurate, timely information to technical traders everywhere while, at the same time, introducing traders to the foundations and proven methods of technical analysis.

Martin Pring's Breaking the Black Box shows technical traders and investors how to design, build, and apply trading systemswhether automated or mechanicalfor successfully trading in today's volatile markets. Martin Pring explains the basic ground rules and bedrock principles of technical analysis, and then builds from there with examples of several of his favorite systems. From the McClellan oscillator to proven intermarket systems of analysis, Pring explains how anyone can incorporate the benefits of technical analysis into his or her own trading program.

4 out of 5 stars Sound Guidelines for Setting Mechanical System Parameters.......2002-02-07

Breaking the Black Box was not written for lazy traders. There is no Holy Grail. Traders who want to learn the skill of building a functional system will benefit from this CD tutorial. If you're looking for unreal profits and wild promises, you won't find it here! Great, sound advise.

            1 out of 5 stars A delusion and a legal fraud.......2001-08-10

It doesn't break any black box. The author writes with it's usual clarity but the text does not keep up with it's promises at all. It generalizes about trading systems but it does not give any real advise. It is in line with the author who is good in teaching the basis of TA but nothing else. Unfortunately famous persons obtain a large following even with routine and useless productions like this. John Sweeney, in the back cover page of the book, states: "....a good introduction to system developments and helpul in supplying trading ideas....". That is right: introduction, no more. Ideas, right or wrong, are everywhere. Also don't get fooled by the CD ROM which comes with the book. It is just a tutorial (no productive software) and, in order to force you to see his site, where you are offered other (a lot of) things, the CD runs only with MS WIN NT. I was able to use it with Win 2000 but why not produce and offer it for the most widespread WIN operating system? Unfortunately exploiting losers is the rule. Extremely sad! Don't buy this book. There are a lot of them much better on trading systems.

Winner of the 14th annual Delacorte Prize, Breaking Boxes just may break your heart. It's the story of a loner named Charlie Calmont, his older brother Trent, and how they get by after both of their parents are gone. Most of the time Charlie feels lucky: Trent never hassles him, and, for the most part, they get on fine with fish sticks and canned vegetables. The calm disappears, though, when Charlie gets suspended for fighting with guys at school who care more about the kind of shoes he wears than who Charlie is on the inside. In this alternately heart-warming and heart-breaking tale, A. M. Jenkins tells what happens to Charlie after he befriends one of the guys who tried to beat him up. What is a friend, anyway? How will Charlie, who's never had many friends, know when it's appropriate to open his heart for a new friend or when it's time to shut himself off from the world and act cool?

              Book Description

Charlie Calmont is a teenage loner. His parents are gone and except for his older brother, Trent, he doesn't need anyone, especially friends. But when Charlie ends up suspended after a school fight, he meets Brandon Chase, and things begin to change. Even though privileged Brandon hangs with the moneyed crowd, Charlie discovers there's a real person underneath the rich kid exterior. For once, Charlie makes a connection, and allows himself to care. Until he reveals something about Trent . . . and Brandon turns away.

3 out of 5 stars It was something..........2003-09-07

I thought it was nice, and only nice, mind you. It wasn't that the writing was bad. Heaven's no- the writing was brilliant, for god's sake, that was the best part! However, the book beside the writing- meaning the plot, the charactors, the setting- was a little on the boring side for my taste and I'm only saying that because the book is somewhat long and yet nothing really interesting happens, but don't let something silly like that stop you from reading it.

              5 out of 5 stars Amazing.......2000-12-29

This book is just amazing! Its a book anyone can releated to. The charaters are very real and intresting. This book will put a smile on your face after reading and you will never get bored of reading it.The content is very well written. A job well done by A. M. Jenkins. This book is a must for every teen out there.

5 out of 5 stars A powerful, unflinching look at some tough teen issues.......2000-10-26

Charlie is such a wonderful character -- he reminds me so much of what it was like to be a teenage boy, while at the same time he is so complex and interesting...a study in contrasts at times, which makes him so more real for the reader. I like the way he gathers his inner resources to cope with challenges on his own....I know YA books these days are supposed to provide the reader with everything right down to 1-800 helplines -- but this book is much more realistic than that, which is one reason it is so good. Because so often in life there IS no help that is readily available or even apparent, and it is through dealing with these challenges that a person's inner strength is grown and matured.

I am astonished at A.M. Jenkins's ability -- especially as a first-time author -- to get into this character's head so perfectly. I also love the interplay between Charlie, his brother Trent, and Charlie's new friend, Chase. An emotional, satisfying read!

1 out of 5 stars No resolution of plot or character flaws.......2000-07-13

Since this book won the Delacourte Press contest, I kept telling myself there would surely be something redeeming about it. I read the entire book and still felt Charlie did not change in a positive manner, too many loose ends in the plot were left in a negative way with no resolution, and I did not LIKE Charlie at all--very important for a book aimed at teens. Beware the explicit language and sex. I will NOT put this one on my school library shelves!

5 out of 5 stars Breaking Boxes - Breaking the Barries in Teenage Readings........2000-05-19

Breaking Boxes clearly brakes the traditional barrier in teenage readings. It effectively deals with contemporary issues incl. alcoholism, domestic violence and homosexuality that are often avoided or dealt relunctantly in young adult literature. AM Jenkins's potrayal of the characters are all thorough and emotionally touching. It's an excellent reading for both young adults and adults alike.

Personally I would include Breaking Boxes as one of my old-time favorites.

2 out of 5 stars very little of De Bono.......2003-01-22

There is interest in this book... but it hardly surrounds understanding De Bono or his work better. Infrequently we get an idea of Dr De Bono - almost in a state of anxiety about getting on a plane, ignoring said biographer as he first appears at De Bono's gate. These, while interesting, are overpowered by an almost overzealous need to praise everything that De Bono has done.
We read that De Bono churns out another book mid flight: no criticism, no effort to understand if this new book adds much to what has gone before. Rather, we are left with the uneasy feeling that Dudgeon is in awe of his subject, afraid to wonder if any book written in several hours can really be an addition to what has gone before.
Although I happen to enjoy most of De Bono's work I couldn't help but feel that this book is something that De Bono would be proud of: "Simplicity" is one every page. Nothing is examined beyond the most cursory of thought. It's the only biography that I know of so, if you're desperate, grab a copy. Otherwise - spend your time elsewhere.

Breaking Out of the Box: Adventure-Based Field Instruction offers the unique opportunity for professors to use experiential, or adventure-based, learning activities to help students develop skills that are often overlooked in traditional reading and journal writing based field courses. Integrating these experiential activities as educational tools also emphasizes the importance and potential of methods of alternative learning. By asking students to participate in activities that may challenge their comfort zones, instructors create a situation in which higher risk can lead to greater trust between group members.

                        Book Description

Mary Latela claims that religion wrapped itself around her, first bringing structure and certainty, then a choking tangle of confusion and disappointment. This dramatic and fast-paced adventure is the basis for Breaking the Boxes: An Open Spirituality. In place of the image of houses of worship or "faith communities" as locked boxes which often exclude some and privilege others, Mary proposes a spirituality based on open hearts and minds. Personally, this involves an intense, painful, yet often humorous examination of life lessons about spiritual health and spiritual sickness, healing, and release. Grappling with the unfolding of a religious call, Mary tells the story of wrestling with the Spirit, with her beliefs and misgivings, and with significant people in her life, in a search for her inner core-who she is and what she is doing here. Mary Latela holds a Master of Divinity degree from Yale University. She was a member of a Roman Catholic religious order in her youth, then a young mother, and later an ordained church pastor and college educator. A native of New Haven, Connecticut, Mary is devoted to her family and friends. As the family genealogist, she keeps in touch with relatives from the Adriatic coast of Italy. She is the published author of twelve other spiritual books.
