A pocket full of appropriate caring.......2005-01-18
Though described as a "pocket guide," one would need generous pockets to contain this quick reference book aimed at assisting nurses to provide culturally competent healthcare in everyday situations. Culture & Nursing Care contains profiles of over 20 ethnic groups whose numbers and cultural perspectives on healing may make caring for them problematical for nurses.
The book is organized and laid out conveniently and consistently. Each ethnic group is dealt with in a similar structure, making information easy to find and read. Cultural and ethnic identity are discussed, and the preferred names and ways of describing each group are offered along with historical information and geographical references.
Next, sections on communication include not only information about language, literacy, interpretation and do's and don'ts of communicating with individuals and groups, but also touch on specific cultural factors in the group's behavior that would affect interactions in the medical setting. Further sections include activities of daily living, food practices, symptom management and descriptions of the critical rituals surrounding transitions like birth and death. Family relationships and spiritual orientation discussed, in addition to details about the all-important illness beliefs and health practices common to the group.
In addition to these ethnic profiles, an appendix on "Diversity Among Spiritual and Religious Beliefs" profiles each belief system and points to specific factors that affect the believer's approach to health and life transitions, spiritual care during illness, dietary regulations and the group's expectations of caregivers. Other appendices provide hard demographic data on the populations presented, along with selected maps. Unfortunately, in today's geographically challenged USA many users may not be able to connect a group with its homeland by simply looking at a map.
Culture & Nursing Care is obviously a good starting point for culture awareness on the part of students, nurses and other healthcare workers and a manual worth having on hand at intake facilities and nursing stations. However, with the exception of major urban centers, it is likely that professionals will need in-depth awareness and knowledge of certain ethnic groups, while rarely encountering others. Perhaps familiarity and use of the current book would facilitate interest and energy for the development of more extensive on-site information resources as the local population dictates. The editors have chosen contributors with close knowledge of and identification to the groups presented. Each profile contains a picture and short bio of the contributor along with further references to information about the group discussed that could be resources for more in-depth development.
In addition to nurses, this book can initiate doctors and administrators, as well as psychologists and counselors into the realities of healthcare diversity. Trainers might do well to peruse it in preparing human resource professionals and others involved in personnel management to recognize this dimension of difference.
Excellent companion book.......2003-05-08
I also use the Mosby pocket guide to cultural health assessment by D'Avanzo, but this book is a must for those cultures found most often in the US. It includes American Indian, Japanese American, Chinese American, etc. It was last edited in 1996 but the information seems to be current. The spiral binding makes it much easier to use also.
For Occupational Therapists too.......2000-03-27
I actually purchased this book to enhance my professional knowledge as an Occupational therapist. As a medical professional, I feel that with the varied cultures we work with on a daily basis, this was an extremely helpful handbook. I would recommend this book as a reference for any medical facility. In relation to Occupational Therapy, the book includes attitudes & rituals that a culture has toward activity of daily living (ADLs), food practices, care of family members & family relationships. In a medical field that "does not have time to deal with anything other than the physical needs", we should all reallize that if we take a moment to listen to the patient & incorporate their cultural differences, then we can all offer better quality of care. When we offer the most complete unbiased care, respecting the differences in others, we can help prevent further medical complications, by NOT neglecting the "true" needs of a family. Please add this book to your quick reference medical collection.

Wonderful book to find yourself, God and your soul mate!.......1999-05-16
Once I started reading this book, I could not leave it. I felt that God was speaking directly to me through the words of this book written by Eileen Flanagan. Finally someone of my same generation finds that the way to romantic love is growing from within, trusting God and the Universe to lead the way. In a world of consumerism, finally someone sees beyond the material and superficial world, and looks at the spiritual essence of human beings and life, in such a crucial thing as searching for one's soul mate and sharing a fulfilling life together.
If you are really ready to ask the right questions, read on........1999-05-04
If you are searching to spiritually understand yourself and how you can love better, read this book! I stumbled upon this book a few weeks ago. Within two weeks I had completed the book and filled a journal with the thougts it provoked.I felt like I was having a conversation with a close friend about everything most important to me--God, marriage, family and most importantly the love that ties them all together. This book is a page turner and a soul awakener.
A thinking person's antidote to marriage manuals.......1999-03-24
A wonderful new book on relationships. This book is based on the assumption that there is an abundance of love and that the way into a loving relationship is to learn to be a better lover. It is a refreshing antidote to the marriage manuals which often purport a scarcity of love and a manipulation of others to get it. Flanagan also explains a process called discernment whereby we try to discover how we are meant to live, be it single, in a committed relationship, with children, etc. She skillfully weaves the stories of many people she interviewed about their own relationships (including single, married, gay, straight, young, and old) and how they discerned their way into them. It is a very engaging, readable book. I recommend it for anyone who is looking for a mate as well as for those who want affirmation for a current loving relationship.

Would the Real Fern Michaels Enter and Sign In Please?.......2004-04-04
I have been a long-time fan of Fern Michaels, but occasionally you run into one of her novels that does not sound as if she wrote it. Late Bloomer, No Place Like Home, and Cinders to Satin were wonderful reads. Her book The Future Scrolls was disappointing and defintiely not of the same caliber. Unfortunately Listen to Your Heart is another example of one of her poorer writing efforts.
While reading Listen to Your Heart I couldn't help but wonder if this was written by a member of a stable of writers that call themselves Fern Michaels, a very junior member.
The story line was contrived and predictable. The characters were shallow, and the conversations unbelievable. There was no plot development, save for the detailed explanations given during conversations between the characters. One example is the first time that one of the principle characters, Josie, meets a new business client. The client compliments her on her place of business. Jose responds by saying,
"My sister and I have only been here three years. Our parents operated the catering service until their death. There was a gas-line explosion that killed them. This has all been redone and landscaped. We added more flowers, some shrubbery, and we repainted the ladybugs and the cottage. I apologize for the condition of the carpet, but we had a bit of an accident this morning. I had to take the screen door to the hardware store for repairs and didn't get to the floor. Step carefully."
Please, enough! Information overload! Poor writing. Skip this one.
A pleasing southern tale, a little bit supernatural.......2002-07-02
This is my first Fern Michaels book.
This was a pleasant story about a "work alcholic" twin and the love she finally meets. The story tells a lot of details about life in the "richer" part of the south and paints a real good picture in your mind so it is easy to see the setting. The story centers around a maltese and a boxer (dog) and their owners. It is love at first sight for the dogs and this leads to some rather humorous situations.
I did think that the book was VERY predictable as to what would happen next which I found to be a bit dissapointing. Which is why I only gave it 3 stars.
I did find all of the references to the "dead mother" giving signs a bit far fetched and I thought it actually took away from the story.
This refers to the unabridged audio version.
Great potential, but no detail.......2000-08-26
This book has the potential for a wonderful love story, but I felt it was written in a rush. First of all, there were mistakes that weren't even caught, using the wrong names for characters, Paul when it should have been Jack, etc.
I really felt I was reading an "abridged" version of the book, there was no time to get to know the characters, no development of their relationships, no detail into their past. I felt more like I was watching a movie. My first Fern Michaels novel, and a bit of a disappointment.
Not a keeper.......2000-08-23
Josie runs a catering business with her twin sister Kitty after her parents' death. Josie's only relationship is with her dog when suddenly Paul and his giant Boxer smash into her life.
This was the most pathetically contrived book I've read in a long time. I really have little respect for a romance that goes from "I'm not sure I like him" to "Let's get married" with little or no development. This book did that and had little else to redeem itself. Even the lush setting of New Orleans was barely explored. The dialogue was pure torture, rambling sentences and interruptions. Sure, the dog thing is cute, but it will only get you so far in a romance.
Don't Miss This One!.......2000-08-10
As always, Ms. Michaels does an outstanding job of entertaining readers with her gift of storytelling. "Listen To Your Heart" is no exception. A fast-paced love story with a supernatural twist, she takes readers on a journey revealing just how far the bonds of love can reach.
Book Description
Listen to Your Heart (Narrator: Joyce Bean, Director: Sandra Burr, Engineer: Melissa Coates): With her parents gone, her twin sister, Kitty, about to be married, and no hint of Mr. Right on the horizon, Josie Dupre is lonesome. Luckily, she has her booming New Orleans catering business, and her fluffy white dog, Rosie, to keep her company. Then, a jumbo-sized Boxer destroys Josie's flowering windowboxes, and in the process, brazenly captures petite Rosie's undying devotion. Josie finds herself an unwilling chaperone - and doing her best to avoid Zip's owner, the irritatingly appealing Paul Brouillette.
What You Wish For (Narrator: Laural Merlington, Director: Laura Grafton, Engineer: Jill Sovis): If her abusive husband had not tried to kill her and her beloved dog, Helen Ward might never have left her million dollar home and run far away. When she meets college professor Sam Tolliver, she begins to believe fairy tales do come true. But the past is catching up with Helen - and her fear is growing. Soon, she'll have to face the biggest decision of her life.
Plain Jane (Narrator: Laural Merlington, Director: Sandra Burr, Engineer: Jill Sovis): Back in college, plain Jane Lewis would have given anything to be like homecoming queen Connie Bryan. Today, a lovely and confident Dr. Jane Lewis has a thriving psychotherapy practice, her own radio talk show, a beautiful old Louisiana mansion, and her affectionate, nutty dog, Olive, to keep her company. But Jane has never forgotten Michael Sorenson, the boy she had admired from afar in college. She's also never forgotten the brutal, unsolved attack that ended Connie Bryan's life - and that haunts her still.

Customer Reviews:
A good direction.......2004-10-10
I am a pre-med student and I bought this book becase I want to start thinking about the issues addressed sooner rather than later. I only gave the book four stars because I think it really only has resonance for those in medicine. I also was not impressed with the quality of the prose in many of the selections. Some, however, were outstanding and since this is really not meant to be a book of great literature I added a star. If you are not in medicine I'd subtract a star and maybe even two.
I understand that some may not agree and think this book has general relevance to patients as well. I would not agree with that assessment at this time.
Bought it as a gift for a Med Student.......2003-01-25
and he thought the writings were not that great
Put down those note cards and read awhile!.......2003-01-01
I am a second year medical student, halfway through a year filled with hours and hours of lectures, labs, studying, lectures, small groups and then more studying. This book was a much needed reminder of why we all got ourselves into this field--people and the stories they have to tell us.
Let Me Listen is a collection of reflections by medical students as they completed a primary care rotation in Cooperstown, NY. All students on the rotation are required to write about their experiences, and this book is a compilation of the best pieces.
I wholeheartedly recommend this book to any medical student. It will be just the thing to cure those highlighter blues! I also recommend it to those involved in medical education. I think it would be useful for all of us to record our experiences with patients from time to time.
This collection of essays and poems was a pleasure to read and I look forward to picking up this book again and again whenever I need a break from the second year deluge of information.
Humanity in Medicine.......2002-11-14
As a practicing physician, I see all too many signs of the decline of medical care in our country. This collection of writings by medical students goes a long way towards restoring my faith in the next generation of physicians. Nicely edited and organized, Let Me Listen To Your Heart gives hope that in our ever-busier world, young physicians are learning more than how to deal with insurance companies and how to practice defensive medicine. Patients as well as every practicing physician should read this book.
medical prose at its best..........2002-10-30
this collection of writings by medical students is a touching collection of "amateur" writing at its very best! it is a moving glimpse into the human side of medicine -- to be enjoyed by medical and nonmedical readers alike. a tribute to the emotions and humanity of medicine - refreshing and inspiring.
