Now Cigar Aficionado presents the ultimate resource, an easy-to-use, full-color guide with ratings and tasting notes for more than 200 fine cigars, organized by brand. For less than the price of 3 good cigars, it also explores the history and production of cigars, with expert advice on buying, storage, preparation, and smoking etiquette. With a wealth of useful information, this is an essential reference for both connoisseurs and those just beginning to appreciate the pleasures of cigars.

The new(er?) cigar companion.......2007-05-08
I bought this book to replace one by the same title and was dissapointed that it bears no resemblance to the 3rd edition that I had lost. While it is a handsome book, I was ultimately disappointed. What was a clear and concise review of many cigars widely available has become a very limited survey of a few cigars many of which are not easily obtainable. Most frustratingly, the reviewers will describe a certain stick as "the best of this manufacturer" and then go on to review a different offering from the same company without further reference to the cigar they deemed the most desireable. While the section on rare cigars makes for an interesting read, this seems more like a book for cigar admirers rather than one for buyers and smokers. I had hoped to find a book to help me make informed buying decisions. I plan to buy the 3rd edition-used!
Cigar Companion.......2006-11-06
Great book with loads of info. Great for the beginner just getting into cigars for the first time. Very helpful backround info on the brands as well as tips on storing, buying, and lighting. A great book all around.
The internet is the best cigar resource.......2006-11-01
I bought this thinking it would be a good reference and tell me something about all the different brands of cigars, but I don't find any value in it whatsoever. I feel like the author wanted a quick buck so he cut and pasted alot of crap from back issues of his magazine into this book so he could sell the same opinions twice. In addition to that, the brands discussed are very limited and only a few examples from each are featured. Take my advice: I realized that it is dumb to buy any book that claims to lists different types /brands/shapes of cigars because the information is always changing - look on the internet at cigar sellers' websites and cigar makers' websites, where you will find everything you need.
Cigar companion.......2006-07-07
Excellent book for beginners and people who wants to know more of the world of cigars
A nice quick propaganda book........2005-12-12
It's a nice read for anyone starting in Cigars, or even if you started a while back but want to know more about the lore and the background of big cigar companies. It's a real basic fast read of cigar information, history and making (nothing special, just the basics). It tries hard to cover all of the basis, that's why it got a 3 and not a 2.
But as reported earlier, it need more advance or detailed information. They could of put some of their Cigar 101, like info on the beetle, and how to deal with it; The counterfeit gallery etc... But instead, a lot of the book sounds like a sales pitch, saying cigar's are good, these popular peoples smoke cigars etc... (actually that list of Hollywood peoples smoking is repeated twice, and we got a photo gallery of them, so they are listed 3 times).
1st, I never started smoking cigars because it's cool or a Hollywood star is smoking, I DON'T CARE!
2nd, They try to hard at some point, it feel like a propaganda book, and when they give you facts, one is cautious of the Bias of these so called "facts".
All in all, a nice quick propaganda book with some basic cigar information.

Not as helpful as it should be.......2004-10-25
This book gave some useful information on cigars - particularly on the history of cigars, but overall, it did not answer half the questions I have. It does not even have a glossary.
An excellent guide - but needs updating.......2000-06-27
This is a fine cigar guide, but it is getting dated. I hope the author will provide an update soon. Still, it is a very useful reference guide for cigar lovers.
Excellent resource, but needs an update.......2000-05-10
A wonderful book! With an emphasis on Cubans, it gets into detail about the history of cigar production and everything about the leaf from field to final product, including how leaves from different parts of the tobacco plant affect the flavor of your cigar.
The reviews of popular brands are well written and informative, but as they are now 3+ years old, it's about time for a new edition.
An essential volume for anyone interested in cigars!
A must for any book and cigar lover!.......1999-10-22
My wife Pat gave me the second edition in 1995. I recently purchased the new addition. It only gets better. Not only is it put together beautifully but more importanly, it is fun to read as well as being very informative. I find myself frequently going back to it as I'm enjoying a cigar and a scotch. Great book, great price, go buy it. You won't be disappointed. Good smoking!

Zippo Collecting.......2007-03-08
This book is excellent for the true collector who has been at it for a while. It list some old more wanted pieces along with some more recent pieces. I would not reccomend for a new Zippo collector though.
OK ?.......2006-11-03
Not much of a book....
Odd size format, difficult to place on book-shelves.
Other than that the photos are sweet.
The History of a World Icon.......2004-06-16
Excellent book about the legendary zippo lighter great illustrations everthing you want to know about the history of zippo a must for every zippo collectors library
Adding some light to a legend.......2003-11-24
Still a classic after all these years, the Zippo folks keep to the basic rule, don't mess with rightness and success will follow. Endearing classics like the rural mailbox, Duracell batteries or a Stanley knife are simple solutions that stay with us decade after decade. The Zippo company did branch out in Sixties with a new line in table lighters, it was not a success.
This is a typical company history book (produced with their blessing) so don't expected any deep insight. The authors zip through the decades with anecdotes and factoids mixed in with plenty of photos, illustrations, period ads and dozens of pictures of lighters. The design of the book is the main reason I bought it. Strangely, for a conveniently small product, many of the lighters shown are either larger or smaller than the real thing, I would have thought it sensible to keep them all life size.
The company recognises that collectors buy more than thirty percent of sales and they capitalize on this by bringing out annual collections plus specials for any event that seems appropriate. A useful eight pages near the back of the book covers dating your Zippo, with photos of the bottom of the lighter which has a simple coding system.
If you are a collector of this world famous lighter this nice looking little book would be worth buying though I can't see the reason for the hefty price.

Product Description
A comprehensive guide to identifying, selecting, buying and storing cigars.
Book Description
Her classroom was the last stop for a group of troubled kids. Teacher LouAnne Johnson, the petite ex-Marine of Dangerous Minds, was their last chance. The boys, like handsome Latino Julio Escovar, expected to end up in jail. The girls, like regal, golden-skinned Simoa, often mysteriously disappeared. But not in LouAnne Johnson's class.Risking her life, and her heart, LouAnne cajoled, bribed, and loved these teens. She went out on tough urban streets to track down Simoa, she faced a dangerously angry father to get pretty, talented Araceli into art school, and she fought drug pushers, trouble-making dropouts, and burned-out teachers to leave her kids alone. Her goal was to get her kids to graduation. Her method? Believe in them....until they believed in themselves.
Customer Reviews:
Amazing and inspirational.......2006-07-28
I've worked in high schools for the past several years, and now am trying to get a job as a teacher. This book will be on my shelf to assist me with dealing with my class. Her methods are great! Too many teachers are so uptight that they are the cause of their own classroom problems. This author shows that great results can be had with compassion, a sprinkle of humor and a true love of her students.
Feel the LOVE!.......2006-01-17
What a wonderful book, for teachers, students, parents, anyone who might need to be reminded of how much we have to give, if we just "will". The author shows her love for her students in every passage, and it was well written, witty, and a wonderful read.
Highly recommended as an entertaining, and insightful, book on teaching children who need love desperately.
Fine Teaching.......2002-03-15
I had the wonderful chance of reading this book. This book made me laugh and cry and jump in suspense. Ms. Johnson is a wonderful teacher who deserves awards beyong awards. The book taught me to see other parts of education. I really enjoyed reading this book and recommend it to anyone who is going into the education field
I can relate!.......2001-12-09
This should be required reading for every education major. I teach in an urban school; Ms. Johnson had something some of my young colleagues who quit teaching after a year do not have--resolve, persistance, and determination. There are no "bad" kids, there are kids who do "bad" things or come from "bad" environments, but as Ms. Johnson writes, it is possible to save the kids by giving a lot of ourselves.
How can she bear such a heart pain?.......2001-02-21
I'm also an English teacher who have been teaching teen-agers for 10 years. Teaching teenagers is hard work, very stressful, depressed by themselves and the surrounding of them. I don't have such energy of love to my students as Louanne Johnson. But I can feel her pain in heart because I myself love my students. They are devils and angels at the same time. If they were devils, I could ignore them. If they were angels, I could just smile, do nothing, and just ignore them. But they are irresistable.
I agree with Hal, her master teacher. He said to her, "Teenagers are supposed to be ungrateful little brutes. They're supposed to trample your tender feelings, break your heart. It's their job." He is always right. I wish he would be with me!!!

Customer Reviews:
Todd drops out of SVU.......2005-04-14
Todd drops out of Sweet Valley University,so that he can have more fun at Frankies, where he works[a bar] Elizabeth has been duped by Finn,Finn has another girlfriend. I love the part where Sam and Finn are at The Red Lion, and Sam dumps a cup of Coffee on Finn[Defending Elizabeth, how chivalious!] Elizabeth and Sam Kiss, and Sam doesn't want their kiss to mean anything. Chloe moves out of her dorm, away from Moira and into a new dorm.
All SVUs are exciting.......2001-08-04
In this Todd drops out of college..imagine studious Elizabeth's reaction. He starts working in a bar which none of his school friends can appreciate.Todd starts to lose all interest in the Sweet Valley-ites he has grown up with as he realizes they are all naive snobs. But Todd likes working at the bar and makes fab new friends so good on him!!
Dropping Out--a review.......2001-04-28
Although the plot of this book--Todd drops out of school because he is confused and likes his job--is pretty good, I have really got to question the author sometimes...If Todd can pay solo Southern Cali rent on that minimum-wage job, I'm the Queen of England...sometimes her books are just too much fantasy. I thought it was interesting to see the princess-in-school attitude Todd got when he tried to date SVU'ers...Looks like "townie" Todd is going to have some trouble ahead. Sam & Liz have had a kiss, but that story is progressing really slowly here. Jess still has no love interest to speak of...if you like Todd, this book might be for you.
My favorite from SWEET VALLEY UNIVERSITY series........2001-04-08
DROPPING OUT is probably the best book from the SWEET VALLEY UNIVERSITY series. My favorite character in the whole SWEET VALLEY series - each and every one of them - is Todd Wilkins. He seems like the most realistic character of them all and if he were a real person, he'd be a really cool (and cute, from the pictures on the covers) guy. In DROPPING OUT, Todd finally starts to realize how much independence means to him. His father had forced him into majoring in Business, but he didn't do well in that because that's not what he wanted to do for a future career. So he decides to drop out of Sweet Valley University and get a job working as a bartender at a local bar! His parents, especially his dad, are really furious when they find out he dropped out. They take away his bank and credit cards and even his nice BMW they gave him in high school. Now he has to pay for everything himself.
Liz, who didn't understand why Todd wanted to drop out, is confused about the kiss she and Sam had. Sam, who loves Liz, doesn't want Liz to know that the kiss really meant anything because of a secret he's been keeping from her. The rest of the characters don't really have any big problems in this book, though. Todd, Liz, and Sam are the three main characters in this book. But if you love the SWEET VALLEY UNIVERSITY series and wanna find out what happends to Todd, Liz, Sam, and the rest of the Sweet Valley gang, then check this book out. Great read. You won't be disappointed!
Dropping Out.......2001-02-26
This book gives a reality based image on actual college life. Todd has always been a 4.0 student, but now the life of independence is calling to him. Dropping out of school, he becomes an assistant manager in a bar. THis book shows how hard life is without education. Elizabeth is now in a romance turmoil with her housemate Sam, They have had an on again, off again relationship for a year. Will it last?? I don't know. This is another amazing book in the never dissapointing series.

"A hip compendium of cinema savvy ... perhaps the most practical battle manual available to the young filmmaker." -Newsweek
Customer Reviews:
A Great Book. A Classic........2005-08-20
Read this book before you even CONSIDER working in the film business. Everything Bayer says is as true today as when he first wrote it. This book belongs in every filmmaker's library.
Breaking Through, Selling Out, Dropping Dead GREAT BOOK.......2005-03-26
When I read this book in the mid-1970s, it was almost
unbelievable to me that the film business, or any business,
could operate this way. I still find it hard to believe,
but there it is.
If you read this book, you'll lose much of the dangerous
belief that film is intrinsically art, which most persons
have. It will only slow you down, and keep you mystified.
Movies are mass-produced entertainment, and this book will
tell you how to get a toehold in what must be the most
cut-throat business anywhere.
If you want in, read this book. If you still want in,
you're well on your way.
No One Wants Truth.......2000-03-11
I read this book in 1979 and have since spent over 20 years in the movie business seeing if the information is true. It is. But no one wants to confront it because they think the playing field is level or that they will be the chosen one, or, or, or ad nausium. For more details read "The Feature Film Distribution Deal" by John W. Cones, Esq. You will come to see the film business for what it is and learn ways to correct it, before it completely polutes, or destroys, Western culture.
