World's Worst Textbook.......2006-07-17
I teach developmental writing at a local community college. My department decided on this book long before I started teaching there. I've found the grammar section of this book useless. anytime I have ever assigned a chapter for my students to read from it, they all complained in unison that it was "boring, too broad, and way too confusing." There is not a single note in the entire text about how to combine sentences using subordination, coodination, or relative pronouns, much less how to punctuate them.
With the writing section, there is one decent chapter on how to write a thesis statement. The chapters on the individual rhetorical patterns, on the other hand, present students with two student models and a professional essay, but no explanation or exercises on how to actually write an illustrative or descriptive or definition essay. As a result, I am a slave to the copy machine. Since I am required to make my students buy this useless book, I photocopy material for students to use to initially help them learn the material. I then use the material from Langan's as additional practice, just so students don't feel like they wasted valuable money.
Even the companion website is a pain. I thought of using the companion website for my students, but I found it particularly confusing to get around. In addition, it is next to impossible for me me to assign anything from the website because nothing can be printed, emailed, or pasted.

Excellent beginner's textbook........1999-11-03
I use this text for my remedial college freshman English course to help them brush up on grammar, punctuation, and writing forms before moving on to freshman English. My students have always liked it, and so have I.
The readings within it are short, simple, and easy for anyone of any skill to read. They all evoke some sort of response out of my class and have even converted some "non-readers" into new devotees.
This text might also be useful for high school English courses. The only reason I don't give it 5 stars is because some of the grammar/punctuation sections don't have quite enough exercises in them to help some lower-level students get a firm grasp on the ideas. However, any teacher well-armed with worksheets can remedy that problem immediately!

excellent developmental composition text.......2005-10-27
This is the best developmental composition textbook I've seen or used. It opens with chapters exploring each step of the writing process, including exercises for students to do on their own or in class. Next are several chapters covering different genres of essay-writing. Each chapter includes three examples of the genre, one each from school, work, and everyday life contexts. 9 or 10 genres are included (including several types of arguement) so that the instructor can pick and choose which ones to focus on. Another section briefly introduces the research process. The final section, which takes up half of the book, covers grammar topics. It's organized according to frequency and severity of error, beginning with "The four most serious errors," (fragments, run-one, subject-verb agreement, and other verb problems). Each chapter includes a real-life example showing why it's important, in the real world, to understand these grammar concepts. Everything is explained in clear, simple language, with as little specialized terminology as possible. This is a terrific textbook, particularly for a community-college developmental writing class.

More errors.......2005-09-17
In addition to the errors listed by others, I see missing letters in the middle of words, quote marks that are the wrong style (backticks instead of curly quotes, done inconsistently), inconsistent indentations ... it's a typesetting nightmare. Big disappointment.

I wonder if anyone tried to edit this book. You would think that after 86 years of no championships, this book would be flawless. O well, at least the Boston Globe tried and I'm sure the ring is more important than a book to Red Sox fans.
Pathetic, weak effort - someone ought to be fired over this.......2005-04-01
So, after 86 years, the Red Sox finally break through. And, for this special, long-awaited moment, does the once-august Boston Globe take the time to lovingly, painstakingly put together a keepsake for its maniacly devoted fans? No. Instead it puts out a complete and utter piece of dreck. Someone at the Globe or publisher Triumph Books - perhaps the entire team charged with assembling this gaffe - ought to be fired. Shame on you.
This book simply was not edited, fact-checked, reviewed, verified or even given the simplest 'once over.' Even a quick read-through should have caused even the most junior editor at the Globe/Triumph to ask that the presses be stopped.
Reviewer Arthur Weeks has compiled a great list and it gives you an idea of just how egregious these errors are - missing box scores, earned runs in shutouts, St. Louis scoring four runs in the ninth inning of a game they lost 6 - 2. You can't make this stuff up.
Here's a couple of more:
- On pages 26 - 27, two pictures claim to show Larry Walker (p. 26) and Jeff Suppan (p. 27) making baserunning blunders. In fact, both pictures are of Walker - different angles, but it's clearly Number 33 in both shots (and Suppan was wearing a warm-up jacket as I recall).
- On page 86, they bollix up the name of the very guy who coined the term 'Curse of the Bambino': the Globe's own Dan Shaughnessy, who here becomes Dan Shaugnessy.
Furthermore, the box scores are of the variety that appeared in your small, local paper circa 1969. They've got about 25% of the content of a box score that appears today in USA Today and most other corners of the statistics-crazed world of baseball. These box scores offer the reader next to no insight on the game.
One other metric to give you an idea of how thin the gruel is: the marketing blurb provided on these pages (no doubt provided by Triumph) says the book is filled with 'hundreds of color photos.' The book, in fact, has exactly 79 photos. And I'm being lenient here by including the front and back cover images and one page that contains six 1.75" x 3" photo head shots of various players.
In short: pathetic.
It's a crying shame. I urge all Red Sox fans to avoid this book.
I want my money back.
Highly disappointing effort.......2005-02-03
[...] This book was highly disappointing to me as a huge Sox fan for a number of reasons. In an effort to produce something quickly, the Globe sportswriters wrote some of their worst articles ever. Look no further than inside the front cover, where it says that a statue will be erected to Pedro Martinez, among others. After Pedro bolted for the Mets and trashed the team, that seems highly unlikely. Perhaps if the Globe let some time pass by before writing this trash, they could have placed the championship in a better perspective. For now, however, I am glad that I borrowed a copy instead of paying for one.
Ok but dissapointing!.......2004-12-19
Waiting 27 years will whet your appetite for a world championship but thankfully, the wait is over! I purchased Finally! in great anticipation of the quality writing and photography the Boston Globe is known for but came away dissapointed. Photography is a bit grainy and unexciting, the format is in reverse chronology and the writing uninspired. I'm still glad to have this keepsake but not sure if I would recommend it to others. The one commemorative item I have seen that is worth the $$$ is the NESN dvd, Faith Rewarded. If you can only get one commemorative item, go for Faith Rewarded...
