An Excellent Reference, but knowing Hebrew would make for easier use.......2007-10-18

This is an excellent reference source in lexicons. However, it translates from Hebrew to English, and so the best way to use it, if you don't know Hebrew, is to cross reference it with Strong Exhaustive Concordance. The lexicon is indexed to the Strong's concordance, to make it possible to look up the words in English.

Good for amateurs and advanced levels, not beginners.......2007-10-06

It's a good book for those who already know hebrew and want to improve themselves. To find out the meaning of a word in the Hebrew bible using this book, you need to know its root, which is very difficult for beginners. I would recommend for a beginner to buy a lexicon that explains every single word as it is without the need to go to the root.

A Hebrew student's toolkit.......2007-07-12

I don't know why this great work has not been updated with Dead Sea Scroll information, but BDB is the standard lexicon for Hebrew students. Since the early 20th Century, it has stood the test of time and academic hubris to be the go-to lexicon, theological wordbook, and dictionary for Biblical Hebrew students.

Absolutely positively a MUST HAVE book!.......2007-05-30

This is a huge reference work and worthy of much more praise than one could jot down here. Hendrickson publish some wonderful material and this one is no disappointment. If you love the Word and want to get to the bottom of it, then this one should grace your library.

A much needed tool........2007-07-11

If you are studying a Hebrew passage using BDB then you need this book. This book makes it a lot easier and faster to locate a particular word in BDB.

The print is on the small side, but if you are using BDB, you are dealing with that already.

Some use this book without BDB, because they are attempting to make a rough translation. This will work well, but there are times when the English equivalent given is more appropriate the Hebrew word in general rather than the particular usage.

While there are some mistakes in this book, this is not much of a problem when you consider the scope of this book.

A big help.......2006-01-06

Brown Driver & Briggs (BDB) contains a lot of information, but its arrangement can cause a person to tear one's hair out in clumps, especially for those of us who do not use our Hebrew every day. Einspahr helps you find the listing and discussion on a particular vocable quickly and easily. Unfortunately, this volume list only words used ten times or more. I found myself making notes for words used less often. There are errors in the volume and I also found myself writing to the publisher to make them aware of the mistakes I found. On balance, this volume makes Hebrew less frustrating. I wish it had been available when I took my first year Hebrew course.

Ancient Hebrew is not an easy language to master, and so it is often useful to have a BDB Hebrew Lexicon at hand. But that too can be difficult to use (especially if you are relatively new to Hebrew). This Index is the link between the text you are working on, and the detailed knowledge "hidden" in the Lexicon. The trouble is, the Index is so helpful I feel almost guilty using it. (Hebrew shouldn't be easy!) Just one provision, if you are over 45 you will probably want to go out and buy a magnifying glass, the print is extremely small, and can be difficult to see.

soooo helpful for using BDB.......1999-12-28

This index is so very helpful that it verges on cheating. Anyone who has translated Torah knows how very difficult it can be to strip out the grammatical parts of the word to get to the right root. BDB is useful and interesting, but my havurah still sometimes had difficulty getting to the right entry. I found this Index to BDB at a used book store, and it has really speeded up our translation! It lists each BDB reference in chapter-verse order. You can instantly see which words in the passage you are translating are defined in BDB, including page number and definition number. There are still difficult words that are not indexed (because they are not referred to in BDB), so we still get some practice in figuring out the roots! But the Index to BDB (along with the BDB, of course) is very useful in getting the surface translation so that we can start looking at the meaning of the text.

This is a great Hebrew lexicon with detailed entries with references to the other semitic languages such as Aramaic, Arabic, Syriac, and Ethiopic. In fact, it even has a biblical Aramaic lexicon as an appendix.

Why a lexicon? "In the beginning was the WORD." Word usage is enormously helpful to Biblical understanding. H.W.F. Gesenius (mid 1800's) is acclaimed as the Noah Webster of Old Testament Hebrew lexicons (dictionary). He brings to the Old Testament a wonderful blend of Christian/Jewish background and insight. Be sure to note not only the word you are looking up, but also the words that surround it, for they too often lend very interesting and even uncanny insight (divine providence).

If social history is more accessible to many readers than military or political tomes, perhaps its gossipy subgenre is the most entertaining of all. This quirky, highly readable series of portraits of "Women in and Around the White House" is enlivened by some wonderful quotes (many from the irrepressible Alice Roosevelt Longworth) and a gallery of first ladies every bit as insipid as those pictures of presidents inflicted on us all in school (but with really funny captions).

The first lady (she wasn't even called that at first) has always been under pressure from the public and the press to conform to an ill-defined, constantly changing role. Each in the parade of women across these pages did something to change that role, expanding or contracting it, or just plain opting out altogether out of fear or loathing of a public life. Presented largely chronologically, Stephens's look at the wives, mistresses, daughters, mothers, nieces, aunts, sisters, and female friends and acquaintances of the presidents of the United States is a refreshing review of changing fashions in etiquette, clothing, and gender roles. By the end, you'll find yourself compelled to agree with the current first lady's assessment of her treatment: "I don't think there's anything that has happened to me that is, frankly, very new."

Wild and not-so-wild women.......2003-11-26

Not all the women in this book are wild, some aren't wild at all, but all the brief essays about them are interesting and amusing. Many of the women are already well-known, many more are not well-known at all. It is fascinating to read about all the president's wives with their very different personalities and attitudes to being in the White House. My absolute favourite is Mamie Eisenhower, who refused to bestir herself about anything and said "all women over fifty should stay in bed till noon." I only have three years to go, hooray! Truly a woman after my own heart. I was a bit taken aback though when Cher's romance at forty with a twenty-two-year old boy is referred to as a December-May romance. Come, come, Ms. Stephens, forty is scarcely December. September at the latest.

What's old is new again........1998-05-18

Reading Autumn Stephens' Wild Women in the White House reminded me that what's old is new again. These wild tales of First Ladies and other women who've made their own impact (sometimes notorious impact) on the White House just goes to show anything coming out of our nation's head household is nothing to be shocked about. A great read. Lots of attention to detail, history, and mindful entertainment.

What a fun and intersting book! My impression of the world of the White House is forever altered. Page after page is filled with intriguing tales of the tangled lives of the people who have in some way ended up at the White House over the course of U.S. history. It's a real window to the emotional side of the lives of the Presidents, their wives, and all the hangers-on. Yep, those folks are just as wacky and disfunctional as the rest of us. This book is best kept on top of the toilet tank since it's a perfect bathroom reader. Each page is a separate little vignette; pick it up for just a few minutes during your "morning routine" and you'll surely learn something really interesting to share with friends and co-workers later in the day.

Seeing the progression of Ochester's development from the early poems heavily influenced by Robert Bly and Mark Strand through the awakening of his own voice in Miracle Mile, his second book, and finally to his mature awakening in Changing the Name to Ochester where he explores his working class Brooklyn roots -- is an inspiration. Ochester is an important poet, and this book shows us how his unique talent evolved.

Ochester's stand-up poetry style is similar to the best of the comedian Lenny Bruce and poet Gerry Stern. Like life itself, these poems are made of the daily crap and politics of everyday living: what we eat, what we put into our body, what others try to put into us and the quest for happiness, or at least, a strong afterglow every once in a while. If you're looking for self-important poetry that manages to suck itself off with overbearing lyricism that appeals to readers who refer to people as "claque," look elsewhere. For accesible, intelligent and downright funny poems, read Ochester.

Ochester's is a modest talent, and all too often in this retrospective, plain-speaking devolves into the merely plain and into under- or unachievement. There are a few assured and forcible passages, some wisecracks verging on the clever, and long swaths of lazy-man prose. A mixed bag, to be sure, but certain to please the claque.

THE BEST OF THE BEST.......2000-03-09

These are, simply, the best poems by one of the best poets writing. Love, sex, rock n' roll, the Rolling Stones, Shakespeare, Dr. Spock, and even da levy (for you serious underground poetry fans)all show up in Ochester poems. This is a book you lend to friends (and it never comes back) or pull out at a party (the comedic poems in here are better than jokes). These poems, dating back to 1973, still sound 20 years ahead of their time. No other poet in America has been able to bring so much craft to such an accessible body of work. These poems literally sing in the way Whitman did, though Ochester keeps his ear closer to the door and captures our common language better than Walt. I can't say enough about this wonderful book-- other than, buy it.

Great read for all ages!.......2005-02-03

Although this is technically a YA book, the only real "teen" thing about it is Meg's age. She, her siblings, parents and various White House personas are thoroughly fleshed out, as well as the multitude of psychological issues that come along with being the child of a president. White intertwines this with Meg's thoughts -- usually zany, humorous or sarcastic -- which keep it from ever becoming too serious.

I have read and reread (and loved, especially the first one) all three Meghan Powers books in their original editions. I am grateful to Hawk Publishing for reprinting these three books (now called the "President's Daughter" series) so that more people can enjoy them, but I do feel that people should know that these reprints are not high quality. They are trade paperbacks with bindings that seem sturdy enough, but the text is not at all crisp -- in fact, it looks like the publisher may have enlarged the pages from the original mass market editions on a Xerox machine and then reprinted these new editions from those copies. I am basing this guess on the fact that the text looks enlarged and somewhat blurry.

The covers of all three of the reprint editions are hideous; the first one shows a girl who looks to be about 8 or 10 years old instead of a teenager, and the "White House Autumn" cover is not much better. The price is also steep at $14.95. I can excuse that on the basis that Hawk is probably a small press, and small presses find it hard to make ends meet.

If you can get past all that, these books are marvelous to read. "White House Autumn" continues to use Meg's unique voice and sense of humor. The book also deals with Meg's feelings of guilt when her mother is the subject of an assassination attempt. Again, I am grateful to Hawk for reprinting these, even if the quality is a little disappointing.

When her mother, The President,gets shot(a really sticky situation) she is forced to mature like never before. It teaches girls of all ages what can happen any day, even if your the president's daughter! A real life, well almost, look into the life of the first family.

Great sequel to a great novel........2001-05-20

Like its predecessor, I found myself unable to put the book down until I had read the very last page. I stayed up until 5 in the morning to finish it, and it was worth every minute (good thing I didn't have work the next day). Not as light as The President's Daughter, the first book in the trilogy, White House Autumn is bit more depressing and a bit more adult as it tells what happens to Meg and her family when her mother, the President, is shot. It's a serious subject, and the author deals with it in a very mature, realistic and sympathic way. Of course, all of the other great qualities of the first book is still present in this one. The characters are as likable as ever, especially Meg's best friend, Beth, who I'm sure would've been my idol had I read this book when I was younger. The conversation is witty, and the situations and the way the characters deal with them are very true to life. Admittedly not as great as the President's Daughter, but nevertheless a wonderful wonderful read. Try to get your hands on this one.
