Worth to buy.......2007-01-09
I found this book helpful for the most communication problems in Italy. The pocket size of this book makes it real handy.
Comparing the Berlitz and Barron's Phrase Books.......2005-04-10
I bought both the Berlitz and Barron's phrase books. This review is a comparison of the two.
They are both small enough to fit in a pocket. The Berlitz is 220 pages, the Barron's 320 pages -- the Barron's is marginally thicker. The Berlitz page seems slightly denser, with more lines per page, although I believe the font sizes used are almost identical (Berlitz sans serif (Arial-like), Barron's serif (Roman-like). The Barron's comes with a plastic cover which seems durable. Both are sorted into sections, for example, travel, eating out, etc. Berlitz has a 12 page menu reader. The Barron's covers a little more in 26 pages, including a guide to regional specialties. Barron's has a 47 page Italian-English and English-Italian dictionary. Berlitz is about the same. Both show Italian pronunciations in a phonentically English spelling. Barron's has a larger section on Italian grammar. Both have a good table of contents; only Barron's has an index as well. One small complaint with the copy of the Berlitz I received -- the print flows into the gutter (the spine of the book) too far, so that one has to really bend open the book to read the entire line. I think this will make the book fall apart sooner. One small complaint with the Barron's -- in a few cases they print black font on a dark color background for page headings (e.g., "Telling Time," "Months of the Year") which makes the headings difficult to read.
They are very comparable and both will do the job. Both can server not only as a travel guide, but also as a vocabulary builder for an Italian class. My overall impression is that the Barron's is marginally better.
This book never left my side.......2003-06-21
Despite two years of high school Italian, my skills are pretty weak but I know the basic grammar, conjugation, etc. This book was a wonderful resource for two weeks in Italy as well as a handy way of reviewing those old lessons. Yes, it would have been nice to have a larger vocabulary coverage, but that then leads to a book too difficult to keep in one's pocket. The vocabulary coverage was still quite good and key phrases were well organized. For those that have had some basic Italian, there are some more advanced lessons for tenses, forming adverbs, etc.
Using this book does require a bit of flexibility and don't expect to find everything in a split second. It helps to skim through the book in advance and always keep it by your side.
Not user-friendly.......2000-10-14
If you are planning to use this book as a tutorial for an extended stay in Italy, then this book just might be helpful. However, if you want to use it as a simple phrase book AND as a dictionary, it is completely frustrating. Even the most basic words are not located in the dictionary section (most likely because there were included somewhere else in the book). Thus, if you need to quickly look up a word, it is incredibly annoying to sift through all of the sections of the book to figure out where that particular word might be defined.
Great for almost all needs.......2000-08-22
Having this book in Italy really improved my experience and my Italian. It is great from the English to Italian standpoint, but for translating Italian back to English, you still really need an Italian-English/English-Italian dictionary along with you. The nice thing about this book is its small size. It fits nicely into your pocket and you can leave your dictionary in a backpack for less frequent uses. The best tip I can give is this: when you're interacting with locals, just try and muddle through, ignoring the phrases you don't remember. Then, afterwards, go back and find the phrase you needed. It'll be more likely to stick with you then.

Fantastic!.......2006-01-02
This is indeed a fantastic little book. It contains all the colloquial Italian you could need for a short visit or even a long stay in Italy. I just returned from a langauge school in Rome and I wish I had this book with me. It's Italian as the natives speak it - not as they teach you in school. I found a lot of phrases I had to discover on my own from Italian friends.
One warning - If you are a complete beginner, this book does not contain pronunciation guides for the words/phrases. You'll want to supplement this with a beginning Italian text that includes basic pronunciation. Otherwise, this book is a dream!
What They Can't Teach You in School..........2005-12-13
Any student of the Italian language is sure to get a rise out of "Hide This Book: Italian". As with the rest of the "Hide This..." series, this volume teaches those of us without a native tongue what (not) to say in the presence of normal society in Italy. It is as much for beginners as it is long-time bookbusters wishing to evade the inevitable social rebuttals of mispronunciation and assumed innocence of vocabulary. Not for children. Not to be passed up!

Customer Reviews:
Very Practical and Useful.......2005-03-16
Bravo to Berlitz for having produced a one-stop comprehensive source of information on the Italian language. I find Berlitz Italian Grammar Handbook to be invaluable in its depth, clarity and precision in explaining and deciphering often incredibily difficult concepts in Italian.
This handbook can be used either as a strict grammar reference or to acquire a general or specific understanding of most aspects of Italian grammar. It may also be used as one of several means of acquiring a working knowledge of the `syntax' of the language.
Syntax means `word order' or how words fit together to convey meaning. I find the handbook to be quite good at demonstrating common everyday syntax in a simple fashion by means of the direct examples it provides.
Fortunately, this grammar handbook does not assume that you know the meanings of different grammatical terms. It contains abundant explanations for each specific point of Italian grammar and there are always complete explanations provided for all grammatical terms. The way in which the classic grammatical term and explanation is followed immediately by a practical
example of everyday use is one of Berlitz Grammar Handbook's greatest strengths.
Another major plus to this grammar handbook is the huge number of practical and authentic mini-monologues which utilize different points of grammar in actual real-life contexts to illustrate a point of grammar as it's really spoken.
It is obvious that Bertlitz intended this manual for individuals who actually wish to `use' their Italian in real life situations. The handbook also makes clear which constructions are only for formal and not everyday use.
Overall, I recommend Berlitz Italian Grammar Handbook as a very good reference guide and learning tool for Italian. With Berlitz Italian Grammar Handbook you will be satisfied whether your are a complete novice or a language expert. It literally has something for everyone.

Wonderful!.......2004-07-31
This is a great book. The title is misleading because grammar handbook seems to imply boring and disjointed. Quite the contrary. It proceeds through 30 chapters in a logical order. You can start from the beginning if you like or simply open up to any page and learn something. This is because they use great and USEFUL expressions to explain each point. And the book is set up with Italian phrases in a pleasing gold/yellow background with English and everything else in the normal white background of the page. Your eyes easily go to the yellow areas (blocked areas not highlighted sentences) and you've learned something new. Great to take along when you're staning in the USPS post office line here in the San Francisco Bay area ;).
Ciao!

Wonderful reference.......2000-06-04

Featuring thousands of entries, precise grammar and an appendix loaded with helpful cultural and language information, these handy bilingual dictionaries are ideal for use in home, school or office.
Book Description
Among the most important private art collections ever created were those of Imperial Russia. Catherine the Great, guided by Voltaire, amassed treasures on a Herculean scale, laying the basis for what is today the Russian State Hermitage. Favorite courtiers built palaces of unprecedented magnificence in St. Petersburg and Moscow for their vast collections of paintings, antiquities, and decorative arts. In a lively and anecdotal text, Oleg Neverov reassembles these now-legendary private collections-which, after the 1917 Revolution, were dispersed among the Hermitage, Pushkin, and Tretiakov museums, sold to foreign museums, or spirited abroad.
Represented here are works that once belonged to such famed aristocratic families as the Stroganovs and Yussupovs; to the merchant princes Mamontov and Tenischeva; and to the legendary Morozov and Schukin families, the largest purchasers of the early works of Picasso, Matisse, and Braque. Here, portraits of the collectors, period photography, and architectural drawings and watercolors, along with beautiful reproductions of the artworks and texts drawn from the latest research in Russian archives, bring this long-gone era and its treasures back to life. AUTHOR BIO: Oleg Neverov, a Russian art historian, is the keeper of the department of antiquities, Russian State Hermitage. He is the author of catalogues, monographs, and nearly 200 articles. Mikhail Piotrovsky is director of the Russian State Hermitage. Nicholas Romanov is head of the former imperial family.
Customer Reviews:
Great Book!.......2007-01-12
I am surprised that Russian nobility possesses great art collection that worth millions of dollars in today's money. Great works by Picasso, Poussin, Monet, Gainsborough, Renoir, Gaugin and other impressionists took pride in the private galleries of russian noble families.
This book will amaze you of the artistic side and wealth of russian nobility.
My only concern is that the pictures are mostly of black and white. Too wordy and contains few interesting information about the paintings and artists.
Still, I gave 5 stars for the effort of coming up with this extraordinary book.
Great Private Collections of Imperial Russia.......2006-11-10
