Book Description
Shakespeare's genius is marked by his rare ability to appeal to theatergoers of all types and all levels of education. But for most modern folks, the Greek and Roman mythology and history, let alone the history of England and the geography of sixteenth-century Europe that his works are laden with, are hardly within our grasp. Isaac Asimov comes to making obscure issues clear to the layperson, selects key passages from 38 of the great bard's plays plus two of his narrative poems and, with the help of beautifully rendered maps an figures, illuminates us about their historical and mythological background.
Customer Reviews:
Absolutely necessary.......2007-01-21
This is the book if you want to start exploring Shakespeare. And don't get me wrong: it is not shallow -- on the contrary! -- but it is a very uncomplicated reading. Totally worth it.
The best guide .......2006-11-03
As usual with Asimov works, this guide is absolutely superb!! I fully recommend it to readers attacking Shakesperare for the first time
All the facts ma'am and nothing but the facts .......2006-01-19
Asimov was a tremendous information- processor. He could take any subject in the world and give you the basic information about it. He also understood in the scientific and mathematical books , the principles and laws of the subject.
Here he gives a great deal of information. The book has everything but the ' spirit of Shakespeare'. It has Information but no Poetry.
Some of the great literary critics of Shakespeare( which Asimov is not) caught in their reading a spirit of Shakespeare which Asimov does not.
This does not mean that this guide cannot be useful. But reading it cannot tell you what Shakespeare truly is, and why Shakespeare's work has been so loved. For that you must read it as poetry.
A Joy To Read.......2005-11-27
This book is 100% analysis and comments, it contains no works. For that you need another book as a reference as you read this present book. Of all the Shakespeare analysis books, this is book by Asimov is one of the best books available, and very reader friendly and entertaining.
Here is the analogy. Your hobby is Shakespeare and you have just won the lottery. You have decided to quit your day job, shun the world, sit down, and go over every one of Shakespeare's plays, dissect each scene in chronological order, find out where the characters' names came from, how the plot relates to original source stories such as the myth of King Lear, etc. You research such facts - as they might be available - on whether Shakespeare really did invent the plot of the Tempest all on his own, or as Asimov thinks perhaps it was based on a boat crash in Bermuda. You would go on and on... looking at all the interesting details and side notes plus you would find some maps and drawings. Then - possibly five years later - you would take all the notes, hire Tom Clancy or some other well known modern novel writer and together you would write this easy to read 750 page reference book. Perhaps you could sell a few copies.
That would be your labour of love, and that it exactly what we have here. Asimov has taken the time to methodically go through all the major works, divide them into three groups, i.e.: Roman-Greek and ancient tales, Italian-Mediterranean more modern tales, and finally the English-Europe stories starting with King Lear. He does not need a writer's help - he brings that to the table. Each play is treated in a short chapter and gets about 20 to 40 pages of analysis, general source comments, and specific comments on a few key lines. He has all the skills needed to keep our attention, make it simple, give us lots of background trivia plus the key guidance, and make it all entertaining.
I think most would agree that the best book on Shakespeare is the 3500 page monster: The Norton Shakespeare. But the present book is friendlier and at 750 pages easier to read. So this is an excellent reference where one can get a very fast and painless summary of all the works with many interesting details on lines and characters scene by scene without feeling lost or overwhelmed - as sometimes happens with Norton - a book that one can barely lift. Asimov's book is a must buy for most Shakespeare lovers even if you own other books. Simply put this book is a joy to read, an integral part of any Shakespeare library or fine on its own. Asimov spent all that time and made a serious effort, and now we can enjoy it for a few dollars.
Useful Historical Analysis.......2005-06-04
While watching or reading one of Shakespeare's plays, it's interesting to read the notes of some of the different critics. Peter Levi does a wonderful job following the poetry and language of Shakespeare as it develops over his lifetime, in the context of the other writers of his era. Harold Bloom, of course, finds in Shakespeare both a mirror and an impulse for a leap forward in literature and therefore in society. Bloom has fallen in love with certain of Shakespeare's characters (Falstaff, Hamlet, etc.) and uses them as a yardstick for all others.
Asimov takes a more historical view. He has done impressive research into the characters and times. His "Guide to Shakespeare" is useful for its insights into all of the plays, but I found it most useful for the English histories. In the eight plays of the Wars of the Roses --from Richard II, through the Henrys, and culminating in Richard III-- Asimov tracks the family trees and politics of the nobility, spots anachronisms, and does a wonderful job of simplifying the sometimes bewildering array of characters and historical references. Of course, even uneducated audiences in Shakespeare's day would have understood some of these arcane references without a guidebook, much as a modern US audience would easily understand references to Thomas Jefferson or Abraham Lincoln. With his research and clear writing, Asimov brings the history plays --and indeed all of the plays-- back to life.

One of her best.......2007-03-29
I can't count the number of times I've reread this book and its companion piece, Gift of Fire. If you like strong characters, some paranormal activity, and a great romance, you have to read this one.
Unforgettable pair of books.... a "must read".......2005-07-07
I wanted to write a review of this book, and its mate "Gift of Fire" because they are unforgettble.
I am not usually a "paranormal" type reader, I stumbled upon these two because I like the author so much, I wanted to read her earlier works. These two are perhaps her finest books.
The plot is unlike any I have ever read. The hero has a gift, which is sometimes more like a curse. That the heroine has the missing piece to his puzzle is interesting, and makes one think about soulmates and fate. The mystery is as good as it gets.
My advice, buy them together, because once youhave read the fist, you won't be able to stop until you have read the second as well. I only wish there had been more to follow.
The Best JAK book written yet!.......2003-06-07
I have read almost every JAK book that she has written. I can say that I have enjoyed every contemporary romance she has written (I'm not too into the otherworld, futuristic ones). Her heroes are always believable but heroic. Her heroines are down-to-earth women. And of all the books I've read, this one is my absolute favorite. Those professional advertising reviews always state "you won't be able to put it down", but in this case, its true! I totally fell in love with Jonas and could easily imagine myself as Verity (I have red hair too!). And by the way... Make sure you read Gift of Fire after this one; it takes you through Verity and Jonas' next phase of their romance and keeps you "begging for more".
Another winner!.......2001-03-10
Highly recommend Gift of Fire and Gift of Gold.
Definitely not Krentz's best work.......2000-08-26
If it weren't for the Renaissance story thread, I'd have tossed the book without finishing it (Jonas is a dishwasher with a PhD in history). In the beginning Verity lets Jonas force his way into her closed restaurant and gives him a job even though she is fearful and suspicious of him.
Jonas later shows up at a nearby spa where the owners let Verity use the hot tub after hours. Jonas joins her in the women-only facility, climbs in with her in his underwear, and starts fondling her. I've never run into another of Krentz's female characters that stupid. It does get better toward the end.
The sequel, Gift of Fire, is much better. The only reason I read it is that I bought the two books at the same time.

Apples of Gold by Jo Petty.......2001-10-19
This is to say "Well Done" to the seller, Colorado Mist Sanctuary...they were great!! Received notification of receipt of my order and next day shipment within 24 hrs of placing my order. The book is brand new although I purchased a "used book". All monies (minus Amazon's commission) go towards last chance help (feed, vet bills, etc) for wildlife and horses. They have no public funding and I was very pleased to not only receive a great book, but to help in the rescue of hurting animals at the same time. I highly recommend their organization for purchasing books. Amazing service, great reason to buy and enjoy a good book.
SWEET SIXTEEN FOREVER.......2000-06-19
This book was given to me on my sixteenth birthday from my Dad; naturally I will cherish it always. Dad is a very wise man and he knew that this was the perfect book for an impressionable young lady with her whole life ahead of her. This book truly makes me understand that "A word fitly spoken is like apples of gold in pictures of silver." Proverbs 25:11
"Apples of Gold" contains short sayings of wisdom about numerous virtues WE ALL should strive to attain. These virtues are taken from THE HOLY BIBLE Galations 5:22-23; entitled "The Fruits of the Spirit." These 9 "fruits" are the table of contents of this book: LOVE, JOY, PEACE, LONG SUFFERING, GENTLENESS, GOODNESS, FAITH, MEEKNESS and TEMPERANCE.
My favorite saying in each chapter is:
LOVE: "Success in marriage is much more than finding the right person; it is a matter of being the right person."
JOY: "Just think how happy you'd be if you lost everything you have right now--and then got it back again."
PEACE: "That man is the richest whose pleasures are the cheapest."
LONG SUFFERING: "A diamond is a piece of coal that stuck to its job."
GENTLENESS: "True nobility comes of the gentle heart."
GOODNESS: "What lies behind us and what lies before us are tiny matters compared to what lies within us."
FAITH: "Today is the tomorrow you worried about yesterday."
MEEKNESS: "The best medicine for you to take is yourself--with a grain of salt."
TEMPERANCE: "Wise men aren't always silent, but know when to be."
"EVERYTHING HAS BEEN THOUGHT OF BEFORE... THE DIFFICULTY IS TO THINK OF IT AGAIN."
Now do you understand why I treasure this book? Go buy it! This is a keeper folks!
Kudos.......1999-08-17
Jo Petty certainly has a real winner with "Apples of Gold". I am over fifty and can relate to many of the phrases quoted by the compiler. The book generated rather mixed reviews from my young granddaughter who seemed bewildered at some of the outdated metaphors. However, to most of us "oldsters", we are quickly able to grasp the wisdom behind the phrase.
TIMELESS.......1999-08-08
WHENEVER I NEED A LITTLE PICK ME UP, I FIND MYSELF GOING BACK TOTHIS BOOK, AGAIN AND AGAIN. THE PHRASES SEEM TO ACQUIRE A NEW MEANING ASTIME PROGRESSES AND AS SPIRITUAL NEEDS CHANGE.
THOUGHT PROVOKING.......1999-04-22
I BOUGHT THIS BOOK YEARS AGO, READ IT AND FORGOT ABOUT IT. HOWEVER, YEARS LATER HAVING LOST TRACK OF ITS WHEREABOUTS, I FIND MYSELF REMEMBERING BITS AND PIECES OF THE GEMS HELD WITHIN. I'M PLACING AN ORDER FOR A 2ND COPY SO IN MY OLD AGE I AM NOT WITHOUT WHEN I NEED A LITTLE REMEMBERENCE.

Except for Balogh, I didn't like it.......2006-08-30
This anothology consists of three stories:
A Handful of Gold -Mary Balogh
Julian Dare, an heir to an earldom, offers dancer Blanche Heyward (aka Verty Ewing) money to accompany him to his friends hunting lodge over the holidays and become his mistress. Desperate, Verty accepts his offer knowing that she will become ruined. She has no choice. She is the daughter of a deceased Reverend Ewing, who left his family penniless. Verty is the sole means of support for her mother and sister. She lies to her family, telling them that she working as a companion for a lady and not as a dancer at the opera. Soon Julian finds out that she is a virgin and is not pleased, rather confused because she acts like a lady. Later he realizes that she must be a lady for the way she takes charge of the household when a snowstorm develops and strands a family there and the women gives birth with Verty's help. When they retun to London, Verty and her family disappear to the countryside and Julian is frantic to find her because he realizes he's in love.
The Three Gifts -Julia Justiss
Miles Hamperton, a new viscount, is critically injured during the war. Out of neccessity, he marries Edwina Denby on his supposed death bed in order to prevent his horrible drunkered cousin from becoming his sister-in-laws and nieces guardian. Edwina agrees thinking that if he dies, she'll care for the relatives and if he doesn't then they will quickly annul the marriage. Surprisingly, he survives with her help and is undoubtably drawn to her, even though she is far below his station and quite ordinary looking. Edwina is in love with the handsome viscount, but refuses to believe he could want her. Miles stalls any annulment attempts while trying to woo her.
The Season for Suitors -Nicola Cornick
Heiress Clara Davenport needs advice so she goes to the source, rake Sebastian Fleet. She needs to know how to avoid the compromising situations she keeps getting herself into. She's desperate, so she chooses Sebastian even though she's still sore that he refused her marriage proposal two years ago -he'll never marry. He refuses to help, in fact she is in more danger with him than with anyone else, but she can't help it cause she's in love. He's in love too, but can't marry because he can't forgive himself over his part in a family tragedy.
Balogh's story was great as usual, the others stunk. Justiss's story lacks romance. You don't get the feeling that Miles really loves Edwina, there should have been much more buildup. The love scene is really creepy with Edwina pretending to be a her own maid sent to 'tend' to Mile's needs. Cornicks story is the worst, Sebastian was excellent up until he started crying -rakes cry? and when his manhood went limp -I kid you not. Who wants to read about crying and unable to perform rakes??? That just ruined it for me.
An EXCELLENT christmas anthology is A Gift Of Love by McNaught et. al. Read that one, you won't be dissapointed.
EXCELLENT!!! At least an "8*** Star" Book.......2006-01-15
Mary Balogh does it again. But then I shouldn't be surprised as she is one of my favorite authors.
Julia Justiss is also one of my favorites as I have all of her books and have read all of them, most of which are on my Keeper Shelf.
Now, last but not at all least is Nicola Cornick. I have all of her books and have read them too and they are all "EXCELLENT", but, I would advise you to read "THE EARL'S PRIZE", "THE CHAPERON BRIDE", and "WAYWARD WIDOW" before reading her story in this book, as Carla Davencourt and Sebastian Fleet have a history from the other three books. As Ms Cornick says in the beginning of the story....Can Carla Davencourt, who has loved Seb for years, open his heart to the comfort and joy of the Christmas season?
She says this story is especially for all the readers who wrote to her after Seb first appeared in her books and asked when he would have a story--and a LOVE--of his own. SHE DID AND HE HAS IN SPADES!!!!!
A truly wonderful Christmas read.......2005-11-24
Yummy - another Christmas Regency anthology! Well, yes, but it wasn't perfect. However, because of the Balogh and Cornick contributions, it rates five stars.
Let's start with Julia Justiss. Her contribution "The Three Gifts" had great potential. It's the story of a deathbed marriage of convenience but the groom, a badly wounded officer in the Peninsular War campaign, does not die. Instead, he survives and he and his bride must decide whether or not to seek an annulment. Viscount Hampden and Edwina Denby (a widow) seem a somewhat mismatched pair but they fall in love despite their circumstances. What let this story down, I think, was that the author failed to give her characters any real spark of attraction to the reader. I just could not care one way or the other about them. Somehow the plot seemed too contrived and unfortunately, for me at any rate, the whole thing fizzled out. I found my interest waning well before the conclusion. Sadly, I am beginning to think that this author and I are never going to hit it off together.
I haven't read anything by Nicola Cornick before so I approached "The Season for Suitors" with an open mind. I was dazzled. I fell completely in love with Sebastian, Duke of Fleet - crash, bang, whallop!! Clara Davenport met Fleet some years ago and was spurned by him as too young. He is a rake and wastrel - well on the surface he is at any rate! She seeks him out to ask for advice on how to cope with the unwanted attention she is getting from the ton's fortune hunters. He is attracted to her; indeed, he has been all along. What sets this story off was that Fleet is a tortured hero. There was an incident in his youth that has caused him great and continuing grief and, to hide from the grief and hide it from others, he behaves against his true character. I defy anyone not to love this man. He is charming, intelligent, loving and kind and despite his flaws he is, as they say, to die for.
Mary Balogh is a personal long-time favourite writer. I read "A Handful of Gold" in a previous anthology but was delighted to read it again. It is a beautifully told story of a young woman, Verity Ewing, who must earn a living and who is mistaken by Julian, Viscount Folingsby as a lightskirt. He invites her (promising to pay her enough money to ensure the well-being of her family) to spend Christmas at a friend's hunting box along with the host and his mistress. However, gradually, both realise neither are what they seem. A stranded clergyman and his family arrive and almost instantly the planned holiday in bed turns into a true family Christmas and everyone involved sees that the meaning and values of Christmas directly concern them. This is a story of much emotion and introspection and the two lovers become man and wife in a marriage guaranteed to bring them both deep and abiding happiness. This is the sort of Christmas story I am always hoping to find in the Regency Christmas anthologies.
So, hooray for Cornick - I shall have to pursue her back list. Julia Justiss has disappointed me but Mary Balogh, together with Nicola Cornick, make this anthology rate five stars.
three fun Regency romantic novellas .......2005-09-28
"Handful of Gold" by Mary Balogh. The handsome and wealthy heir to an earldom, Lord Julian Dare, seems to have everything; so what do you get the man you love for Christmas who seems to need nothing Verity Ewing asks herself. You give your heart to him though the risk is that he will return it broken.
"The Three Gifts" by Julia Justiss. Near death from war related injuries, Viscount Miles Hampden needs a spouse to provide him an heir; that is if he recovers enough to perform. Edwina Denby agrees to a marriage of convenience because she holds Miles in high regard. Edwina tends to her new husband's near fatal injuries even as they fall in love.
"The Season for Suitors" by Nicola Cornick. Because she is a pretty heiress, rakes and wastrels try to compromise Clara Davenport into marriage. She has been fortunate so far, but knows her luck will not hold out so she decides she needs a teacher to train her, an innocent, on how to fend off rakes. She turns to the poster boy of rakes Sebastian Fleet for mentoring and advice. However, the lessons between the teacher and the student turn into one of love.
These three Regency romantic novellas are fun tales due the assertive females who know what they want and take charge of achieving their respective heart's desires. The men are solid partners but the strong women make this anthology worth reading.

just like grandma and grandpa's.......2007-07-16
In 1969, my grandparents received Leaves of Gold for their 50th wedding anniversary. I was 5 years old. When I was about 8 years old, every time I would go to my grandparents home, I would read this book. My older sister ended up with this book after my grandfather died, and I looked for years to find one like it. I found it on amazon and ordered it. It was just like the one that they had. My little sister never knew my grandparents, so I ordered a copy of this book for her birthday so she
can have a part of their history. I am going to write up a story about why I wanted this book. A friend of mine, who is no longer with us, gave me a book that was similar to this that someone gave her in 1943. She was ninety years old when she gave me this book at church one day because she knew I would appreciate this. It is in a fire safe under lock and key. Highly recommend this book.

This book speaks deeply to the soul. It's topics hold a splendor of variation ranging from courage to happiness. Sitting reading it is like having a grandfather at your side, teaching and training in soundness of mind. It reaches into today's realities with the, almost lost, wisdom of yesteryear. This book is one of my treasures.

excellent account of blind college student's life.......1998-05-18
This is an excellent account of a blind girl's struggles in working toward her career goal of being a speech therapist. Cathy, the main character of Butler's earlier novel, "Light a Single Candle," goes on to college and faces many trials, including dealing with the death of one of the children she works with and dealing with the parents' attitudes about her blindness.
