Arabic Verbs & Essentials of Grammar.......2007-01-09
This book is a complementary work to Mastering Arabic by the same authors. It is called Arabic - Verbs & Essentials of Grammar. It appears to be a nice complement for beginners to studying Arabic.
This is an Arabic language book. It assumes the student might have the companion book, Mastering Arabic and begins with learning basic grammar and sentence structure. Obviously verbs are essentials to nearly all sentences with their tenses, cases and gender. My objectives are not to speak Arabic so much as to be able to read and write it.
It is really a little too early to tell how far this book and the other will take me since it will be several years before its benefits are fully known to me.
I am a typical Mid-west American with some interest in languages and I have studied Spanish, German, with some Hebrew and Russian exposure. I thought I would tackle Arabic because it is an entirely different language in structure and speech than any other language that I have studied. I also see more and more written Arabic in the news media; and much as I love the news media, I would like to be able to judge what is said for myself (i.e. to keep the news media honest). I am 68 also and this is an adventure.
Transliterations Not Good for Pronounciation.......2006-06-16
The review by "Cat Marie" is very similar to my initial review of "First 100 Words" by the same author. I wrote that review before receiving classroom instruction in Arabic from native speakers. As a result of that experience, I amended my review as follows:
There are basic sounds and sound patterns that simply cannot be represented by English phoneticisms, period. So for the purpose of learning the *sounds* represented by Arabic *script*, English phoneticisms are misleading in some cases, and flat out wrong in others.
For those already familiar with Arabic sounds, phoneticisms or transliterations are merely "codes" rather than representations. Unfortunately, this book gives the (often false) impression of *representing* the sounds. Readers who get a false sense of confidence in mispronunciations learned from this book (as I did) may be discouraged when they first encounter the difficulties of correct pronunciation.
For the English speaker, many Arabic sounds and ways of verbally connecting sounds are totally unfamiliar. To learn to properly pronounce Arabic on even the most basic level, inter-personal instruction is an absolute must. Recordings are good supplements for "ear training," but they cannot provide the correction essential for properly *verbalizing* Arabic sounds.
Good start, but you've got a little further to go.......2006-02-13
As a beginner to the Arabic language, I was grateful to find this book. In the past, I've been subjected to dry-as-toast Arabic grammars that made NO sense whatsoever (because they often used jargon that would only be familiar to Arabic scholars with PhDs, probably). Wightwick and Gaafar's book is a nice, slim reference for basic Arabic grammar. What is particularly nice for the elementary student is that while grammar is shown in Arabic script (in my opinion, this is necessary for any Arabic guide worth its salt), the words are also transliterated so that the reader can accurately learn the pronunciation of a word.
HOWEVER, it should be pointed out that the subtitle is a little misleading. This is NOT a practical guide for the "mastery" of Arabic. While a great desk reference, it is still a good introductury Arabic grammar. There are other books for advanced grammar. This isn't it.
Also, this book is not for the absolute beginner. You should have a foundation in the Arabic alphabet and some basic vocabulary. This book teaches none of those things, just how a sentence fits together and various verb tenses.
Looking back on this review, I have to amend a few things. I began studying Arabic with a tutor and would add that while the pronunciation used in the book is close, sometimes it's inaccurate. Really, you need to use this book in conjunction with an Arabic course, because you won't be able to teach yourself. You NEED to hear the language firsthand, and flat words on paper aren't going to give you that.
Honestly, I recommend this more: A Reference Grammar of Modern Standard Arabic (Reference Grammars). This is a fuller, more complete picture of the Arabic language (so why waste your time on a very skinny intro grammar that occasionally makes transliteration mistakes?). Wightwick's book is a decent reference but really, for your time and money, you can do better.
I'd change the stars on my original review but unfortunately the edit option doesn't seem to allow me.
A Well-Rounded Reference Grammar.......2005-12-28
This book is very well-structured, divided into three parts: introduction, verbs, and grammar. The introduction is a glance at the root system of the Arabic language. The verb section is an excellent overview, beneficial to both the beginner and the advanced. For the beginner it acts as a primer; for the advanced, a review. It discusses topics such as tense, mood, verb forms, and irregular verbs. The grammar section is considerably more concise, and seems like an afterthought. It caters to the beginner, but is redundant to the advanced. The end of every chapter provides a brief summary, as well as a good number of examples. This book is essential for the beginner and a good reference for the advanced.
a good start, but that's it.......2004-06-22
First off, it looks like I might have an older edition of this book, so maybe it has been improved. The edition I have is concise, with some errors, and is okay as a reference for beginning students. It's quick and simple to use. But it's nowhere near in-depth enough for advanced students, and even intermediate learners will find it frustrating a fair amount of the time. Use it in conjunction with a variety of other resources.

Excellent Resource.......2007-10-08
This dictionary has been one of my favorite resources while learning the Arabic language. I bought another dictionary (Oxford concise), not realizing it only had the English to Arabic, whereas this dictionary has both!
Okay but not great........2007-08-23
I bought this dictionary when I was doing an Arabic immersion Program through the University of Wisconsin. I was looking for a concise pocket dictionary to carry with me to class to suppliment the Hans Wehr Dictionary. I found this dictionary acceptable as a reference but not super helpful. It contains pretty basic vocabulary. If you are loking for anything more complicated, such as 'exile', it is pretty worthless. Although it does contain tranliterations of words, there is hardly any vowling. I found the the Oxford better as E-A since it includes voweling, multiple meaningsand and also prepositions. However, the Oxford dictionary also has problems with accuraccy. The fact that the A-E section is aphebetical also makes looking up Arabic words combersium. If you are a first year student, this will probably be sufficient but beyond that you will quickly run into its limitations.
Not as great as it appears........2007-03-17
In comparison to other compact Arabic-English dictionaries that I have bought, I, at first, found this book heaven-sent. As a second-year Arabic student, I found the large amounts of vocabulary extremely helpful... that is until I began to check my work with native Arab speakers. A number of words listed in this book are incorrect, and do not match up with their translated meanings. Sometimes the translations are extremely off base, and now that I've become aware of this fact, I use it less and less. It can be very helpful for basic words and for the beginner, but it's important to know that it contains a number of errors.
with transcription everywhere.......2007-02-20
although it contains about 20.000 words it is practical giving full sentences for some words with full tranliteration supplied.excellent for the beginner and maybe for intermediary.
Best quick reference.......2006-11-10
Handily the easiest quick reference dictionary for arabic, particularly the English-Arabic half. While not as complete as the Hans Weir or the Al-Marwid Arabic-English, its a perfect mix of both, and all the English-Arabic dictionaries kinda suck. The Al-Marwid is useless E-A and the oxford isn't really accurate.
Excellent for any use and particularly at the price.
Book Description
This translation guide is based on sound theoretical and pedagogical principles. Unlike other translation manuals available, it transcends crude dichotomies of "literal" vs. "free" translation, "specialized" vs. "general," "communicative" vs. "semantic," etc. and concentrates instead on developing in the student a sensitivity to text-types and a deeper understanding of the demand. which a given text-type makes on the translator. In addition, the student who closely follows this Guide will acquire the analytical tools necessary to make meaningful comments about translation and translations. A glossary of text-linguistic and translation terms Is provided together with a select bibliography.

3 stars i think.......2005-09-07
im in the airforce serving in iraq, some of the iraqi nat, guards that i work with were carrying around old arabic to english books with horrable translations and fotos of "our father sadam" all over them, including songs about sadam, so i bought a box of these books and gave them to the guards, they seemed really excited to get them, i really have no idea how good the books were or how practical they were, how ever it was really hard to find anything that was arabic-english.
Cassette NOT Included!.......2000-05-09
The blurb on this book indicates that it comes with a book ANDan audio cassette - NOT SO! There was NO cassette, and the book alone is not worth half the price. I am an English tutor working with Syrian Arabic speakers. The English phrases in the text are oddly worded, not typical American English. I believe without outside help to make sense of the sentences, it will be difficult to get value from this book other than to help in some (very) basic English sentence structure.

Customer Reviews:
Great story, good lessons learned.......2007-10-11
My 12 year old son and I read this book for his (homeschool) English class. I read it with him as it was a hard read for him. But we both really liked it and as we got further into the book we didn't want to put it down, but read as much as we could. It has a good lesson about not keeping revenge and hate in your heart. It is set in Jesus' time and he is a character in the book. We are not Christians, but loved the book's lesson and story line and I was glad to discuss the topics the story line brought up.
Fantastic!!!.......2007-04-28
I am an [...] girl and this is the absolute best ever book I've ever read in my whole entire life. It is spectacular!! A story about a boy named Daniel, a sister that will not leave the house, a bunch of outlaws, and Roman soldiers. The book also includes Jesus. Elizibeth Speare carefully weaved the truth of Christ in this book. It is very emotional at the end. I cried while telling my mother what happened at the end. It truly impacted me. It makes me want to follow Jesus and please him.
You must understand when I say "the best book I've ever read", what it beat. Here are some books I've read that this book outshined.
The Hobbit
Harry Potter
Shannara
Les Miserables
Narnia
Hittite Warrior
Cat of Bubastes
The Golden Goblet
...and lots more. Notice the last three book titles. Those are also fabulous books. Bronze Bow, however, is wonderful. I can't decide which words to use. You would have to read the book yourself to know what I mean. You will like it, trust me.
Bronze Bow.......2007-04-10
An excellent book for teenagers, and also for adults who want to discover the social climate of Jesus time. The discriptions around the Lake of Galilee lets one feel as if there are there. It's a fast read and one that you don't want to put down. We distributed approximately 30 of these books during the Lenten Season, excellent reports returned.
To Bend a Bow of Bronze One Must Forgive (by a 13 Year Old).......2007-01-22
The Book, "The Bronze Bow" is the best book I've ever read. The Book is about a young Jewish boy living in the time of the Romans; he despises and hates the Romans because they killed his Father and caused the death of his mother and permanently scarred his sister. He becomes part of an outlaw gang to try and get the Romans out of Israel in whatever way possible. While recruiting men and boys he sees a carpenter teaching people to put down their weapons, help one another and to love your neighbor as yourself which he thinks is ridiculous. But, will this humble carpenter, teach him that to love your enemy is the true way to happiness, not revenge?
An Adventure In Galilee.......2007-01-22
The Bronze Bow is a historical fiction book by Elizabeth George Speare. The Bronze Bow is about Daniel, a young man who lives in Galilee and despises the Romans; he would like nothing better than his sword to taste the blood of one. When Daniel is a boy he runs away and joins a group of outlaws who have no other purpose then to rise up against the Romans and destroy them. While Daniel is in the camps headquarters on the mountains he sees an old friend of his, Joel with his sister, Malthace, but wishes he hadn't because it made him think of why he ran away from home. Weeks later Daniel decided that he wanted to word recruiting members for Rosh (the outlaws leader) so he can go in the city and see his friends, while continuing helping in the fight against the Romans. While in the city Daniel becomes great friends with Joel, forms a band of members to work for Rosh, takes up the bronze bow as his symbol and even meets Jesus. Daniel keeps saying to himself, "He trains my hands for war, so I can bend a bow of bronze." Soon Daniel feels so much anger and hate for the Romans that he gets counseling from Jesus who teaches him that, "Only love not strength can bend the bow of bronze."
I think the moral of this book is that we cannot repay love with hate we must repay love with love; we cannot hold a grudge. This book would appeal to both women and men as it has important characters of both genders. If you like faced paced, books with a lot of adventures this is the book for you, however, if you enjoy only slow paced romance novels then you probably shouldn't ask to read this book. I think this is an excellent book suitable for any age, which I give two thumbs up.

Great study guide!!.......2006-01-16
My 6th grade son, 9th grade son and I read the Bronze Bow and went through the entire study guide together. The study guide was an excellent tool to help us understand the underlying theme and messages the author is trying to communicate. I highly recommend it. It is especially great for use in 1:1 and group discussions. Our appreciation for The Bronze Bow increased two fold because of this guide!
