This is quite a good bookfull of explanations of why the priest wears purple in Lent and green in July and other liturgical facts and fancies. A tour de force for Episcopalians. We thrive on this sort of stuff.

Can you tell the difference between the ICEL and the ICET? Does a Lay Reader perform the Laying on of Hands? Do you know what EDS, CDSP, ETSS and 'General' have in common? What is fair about Fair Linen?

The answers to these and many other questions can be found in this book, 'An Episcopal Dictionary for the Church'. It is an encyclopedic dictionary, spanning nearly 600 pages of text (many dictionaries are more of a handbook variety, with brief definitions and far fewer pages). This dictionary has a roster of over thirty contributors from the length and breadth of the church, and a bibliography that is well over a hundred items in length.

Even with the number of pages, there are a few omissions. There is no entry for lavabo, for example; there are many definitions and descriptions that relate to vestments, church elements and architecture, music and liturgical elements, but every so often I find a term that is not included. Despite this, the book remains perhaps the most comprehensive single-volume dictionary available for Episcopalians and other Anglican types.

In addition to the more dictionary-definition types of entries, there are brief article-style entries on major concepts and theological issues. These are often not of concern to Episcopalians alone (terms such as 'baptism' and 'salvation' are included as entries), but these are set in a more Anglicanised context. There are also brief biographical entries on major figures in Episcopal history, broader Anglican history, and yet broader Christian history that ties in more closely with the Anglican heritage (this includes a good number of saints from the early church).

Because of its encyclopedic quality, it is very readable and holds the attention well. Although the entries aren't directly cross-referenced, they do lead well into one another, and invariably I find that whenever I am looking up a term, person or thing, I spend a great deal of time reading and skimming, learning yet more that I didn't know before.

So, if you want to be certain of being able to tell your apse from your Elohim, this just might be the book for you. It is a valuable reference tool for any Anglican or Episcopalian, and I find new things in the book each time I open it.

I found this to be a great reference book, with well written articles across a broad variety of topics on the Episcopal Church and Christianity in general. Ive already given away my first copy, and I can't wait to get more copies.

5 out of 5 stars Superb resource for new and lifelong Episcopalians.......2006-08-17

John Wall's revised, expanded and updated Dictionary for Episcopalians is the perfect reference for parishioners new and old, a guide for clergy and a must for members of the Vestry. The new and larger format is appealing and Philippa Anderson's illustrations continue to enhance the text. Lloyd Childers, Senior Warden, Holy Trinity Episcopal Church, Hampstead, NC.

5 out of 5 stars Can you say e-pis'-co-pa'-li-an?.......2004-05-30

This is a very handy guide, not just for Episcopalians, but for members of any liturgical church, for the Episcopal church does not have a monopoly on many of the things defined herein, but rather shares these with the larger body of Christendom. Granted, there are many things uniquely Episcopalian, but the appeal of this book should not be limited to that audience.

John Wall, the author, and Philippa Goodwin, illustrator, have put together a very handy guide for learning what's what in the church. The vestments worn by bishops, priests, deacons, and other ministers in the liturgy are very specific and almost everything worn has an historical background. Many terms are derived from the Latin, owing to the shared history with the Western Catholic church. Despite the general Anglicanisation of the church, these Latinate terms endured.

In some respects, Anglicans seem to speak a foreign language. First time visitors to the church are often lost, as one must juggle books, learn when to sit, kneel, stand, process, and then listen in as the commentary around them may begin to take the form of a secret medieval code. 'Oops, the acolytes forgot to put out the lavabo again.' 'My, would you look at that tattered tippet? It must always get caught on the sedalia.' 'I was sorry to miss the exsultet, but the curate dropped the cruet in the sacristy, and I couldn't make it back to the narthex for the start of the procession...'

Yes, all of these terms and more are explained in plain English in the alphabetically arranged entries of the dictionary. The illustrations help in terms of vestments, 'furniture' pieces, various postures, and more. The discussion is very practical, more in terms of 'what' than of 'why' - the theological underpinnings are also rarely discussed, as that could take volumes, and goes beyond the scope of this work, which is meant to be a handy reference and easy-to-follow guide for the newcomer, the new acolyte or ministry helper, or the general member of the congregation who wants a bit more understanding of his or her surroundings.

Testament to its popularity, the dictionary has gone through several editions and revisions - the first edition I have is one from the early 1980s, and the latest from 2000, in a wide-book format. A must-have for any Episcopalian, it is also useful for those in other churches. It is also a good reference book to have by Episcopal churches.

5 out of 5 stars Quick! What's a "dossal"?.......2004-01-03

On the surface of things, there might seem something a bit precious about a dictionary that explains "churchy" terms. It smacks of private language and esoteric, self-enclosed culture--two characteristics frequently ascribed to the Episcopal Church. But in fact John Wall's (revised & expanded) dictionary is a gem for at least three reasons. First, it helps the average Episcopalian to get in better touch with his/her tradition. Two thousand years of practice are embedded in the Eucharist and other religious liturgies, and it helps to heighten appreciation and celebration when the richness of that practice is better understood. (The priest's washing of hands is called "lavabo," from the Latin for "I will wash," and dates back at least to Jewish ceremonial ablutions.) Second, any Episcopalian who will ever serve on the altar guild or vestry or as a lay eucharistic minister is going to run across terms that are unfamiliar--paten, pall, centrum, burse, etc. In fact, people in the pew who play no other role in church are likely to be confused at some terms: for example, concelebration, collect, rood, proper. So the dictionary is incredibly helpful from a purely practical perspective. Finally, it's simply very cool to learn that objects in the church and acts in liturgy actually have names: cincture, solemn vs. simple bow, orans position. Believe it or not, this is one dictionary you'll read straight through.

By the way: a dossal is the "large piece of fabric, often decorated with symbols, hung on the wall behind the altar. The term is derived from the Latin word for 'back'" (p 45).

5 out of 5 stars Excellent--and illustrations are beautiful.......2003-08-01

I agree with the reviewers below that this is THE essential book for newcomers to the Episcopal church, or even for lifetime Episcopalians who just never got all those terms straight. Also a great gift for someone's confirmation, or for a wedding where one spouse is an Episcopalian and the other isn't.

The illustrations deserve special mention, too--they're clear, crisp, and elegant. These, and the lovely design of the book, really enhance its gift-giving appropriateness.

5 out of 5 stars Describe every imaginal Episcopalian word..........2002-09-17

I have to say that I loved this book/dictionary. For someone who did not come from a litergical background, this book illuminated so much for me. Every Episcopalian church should have this available for new members.

This dictionary provides the right amount of detail needed for a new Episcopalian to make their way. It's not so detailed though that one becomes bogged down.

            5 out of 5 stars I was one of Willoughby's victims.......2006-02-01

I was one of Dan Willoughby's victims. I didn't meet him until after he went to prison, and I bought into his lying manipulating mind-set. I believed everything he said. It wasn't until he accused me of getting in touch with his jury consultant, whom I never even knew was being considered, that I realized that this guy is a person who has to have someone to blame for everything that goes wrong in his life. Always.

I now believe that he cultivated the relationship with Yesenia, only so he could set her up to take the fall for Trish's murder, all by her/himself.

Mr. Henderson's book tells the facts of the case in an easily readable, and truthful way.

5 out of 5 stars Motherless daughter, who thinks of her & misses her daily.......2004-05-28

to the gentelmen who said that he did not think that Dan did it. Think what it would be like to walk in on YOUR mother, Yes this is the oldest daughter. This book was very well written, very true. Jim stuck to the facts, and to the truth of the story. Just makes you think how can someone involve their children. I had a hard time getting through the book, but on the other hand it was hard to put down. Dan is a very evil man, and the hurt he has caused us all will never go away. We just have to get on with our lives. I know that I sleep better knowing that he is in prison and will be there for a long time. He is very minipulating, that comes across in the book.

5 out of 5 stars CRIME DOES NOT PAY..........2002-03-30

This is a well written, true crime book. It tells the story of a self absorbed, sociopathic personality. It is the story of a married man, Dan Willoughby, who, during a mid-life crisis, decided he wanted to marry the sexy, wanton, and amoral Yesenia Patino with whom he had been cheating on his wife. Instead of simply divorcing his wife, Trish, the mother of his children, he decided to kill her, motivated soley by greed.

Masquerading as a hard working, devout mormon, family man for many years, Dan Willoughby was nothing more than a con man, gulling all those whom he knew. The ensuing investigation of the murder revealed Willoughby to be a real bottom feeder. A liar, a cheat, a thief, and, ultimately, a murderer, Willoughby would not escape the long arm of the law, as his dead wife's family would not let the matter rest in their pursuit for justice.

Dan arranged to commit the brutal murder in Mexico and planned an elaborate charade that included using his children in his murder scenario. He ensured that they would be the ones to find their dead, blood soaked mother. He went to all this trouble so that he could get some insurance money, his wife's share of a thriving business, and the freedom to marry the person with whom he had become obsessed, Yesenio Patino. Little did he know that his wife would have the last laugh from the grave, as the police investigation revealed that Ms. Patino was a transsexual who had once been a man and had had a sex change operation! It was a fact that Ms. Patino had conveniently neglected to tell Willoughby.

The author paints a compelling portrait of the personalities involved in this matter. It persuasively lays out the details of the events that propelled Willoughby to the consummate finale. The police investigation and courtroom drama is succintly summarized. The book is neither a police nor courtroom procedural. What the author attempts to do is provide a portrait of those who were in some way involved in this matter. In that, it certainly succeeds. Persuasively written, the book leaves the reader with little doubt as to the guilt of Dan Willoughby and his accomplice, Yesenio Patino.

The book provides sixteen pages of photographs of the parties involved in this tragedy. It is a compelling and absorbing read that will keep the reader turning the pages. Those who enjoy reading well written books in the true crime genre will enjoy this one. It will certainly appeal to fans of Ann Rule and Jack Olsen.

4 out of 5 stars Reader from Ogden, UT........2001-05-04

I thought this book was very good. Dan Willoughby is an arrogant hypocrite. He sheds his skin like a snake. I hope he goes down in flames with his new trial along with his playmate. I stand totally behind Thera Huish and her family!

            1 out of 5 stars Whitewash Job.......2001-02-09

The gaping holes in the prosecution's theory of this case are conspicuous in this book by the fact that they are totally ignored. The book has no legitimacy because the author uses no critical judgment whatsoever in analyzing the evidence. He just gets on the prosecutor's bandwagon and leads the cheers.

The author also turns a blind eye to prosecutorial misconduct and outright criminal activity by the district attorney, preferring instead to ladle in more and more embarrassing information about the defendant. Instead of an analysis of a murder case, what we wind up with is a modified version of the Kenneth Starr report: 300 pages of smut and no evidence.

If you want to read hero worshipping of the cops and the DA, this is the book for you. If you want a real analysis of the crime, get another book about this case.

I don't think the man did the crime.

"Notorious Alonzo Crane had been dubbed ""The Motion Picture Bank Robber"" by the press because he modeled the bank robbery after a Steve McQueen movie he'd seen. His partners in the crime got away but he was caught when he stayed behind to free his girlfriend struggling with a security guard. The authorities offered him a deal if he'd roll over on his accomplices. He refused, so they gave him twenty-five years to life. Ten years into his sentence, he's offered a chance to secretly leave prison by a corrupt warden in league with ultra-violent prison gangs. All he has to do is retrieve an all-important trunk from the penthouse of a high-rise luxury hotel. If he takes possession of the trunk for the warden, the rest of his prison record will be wiped clean. He'd be a free man again. Back on the streets, Crane hooks up with Duffy-- a former cell mate now small-time hustler with big-time ideas and a penchant for violence--and Trixie, his flirtatious, drop-dead gorgeous girlfriend with a cocaine habit and eyes for the wrong man. Crane fashions an elaborate plan--again, based on old movies he's seen. He doesn't let his accomplices know what they're really after, and Crane doesn't know what he's going to get. Damaged Goods is a pulse-pounding, heart-stopping heist story in the tradition of genre masters such as John D. MacDonald and Elmore Leonard, but uniquely expressed by Roland S. Jefferson, whose professional experience lends special insight and authenticity to this brilliant page-turner. "

            5 out of 5 stars Excellent Read.......2007-02-05

From beginning to end I stayed captivated page after page. I am very familiar
with the author's limitless talents having read three of his five books, and I was not at all surprised that Damaged Goods kept me turning the pages. This novel in steaming hot and envelops you from the very first page. I felt like I was there with the characters, sharing in their anger, pain, lust and every other emotion in between. Five star book, five star story.

5 out of 5 stars Captivating from the first page.......2006-06-14

I thought this novel was provocative from the beginning to the end. I love books that show how greed and lust rule the lives of so many people. This book explored that natural behavior and the author did a fantastic job with character development and making a complicated storyline seem easy to write. Kudos to him.

4 out of 5 stars Twenty five to life.......2006-03-28

The eminent Alonzo Crane is incarcerated at Marion Federal Penitentiary after a botched robbery ten years prior. The "Committee," comprised of three gangs that run the prisons have asked Crane for his assistance in retrieving something that belongs to them. In return they agreed to grant him his freedom. With still fifteen more years to give, what man in his right mind would refuse?

Harold "Duffy" Andrews, Crane's former cellmate and only ally in the streets has nothing but admiration for "Godfather." Duffy is a small time hustler. He sells dope, jack cars, gang bang, shoplift, steal, forge, and pimp girls. He was more of a perpetrator with big ideas.

Trisha Jean Tyler a.k.a Trixie was more than an investment than anything else to Duffy. Wise beyond her 21 years, Trixie recognizes the inevitable bond that she and Crane share. Willingly she invites the unavoidable.

Crane was hoping that his former crew would be willing to repay the time that he served on their behalf. Instead he was met with resistances. Blackmail and cold hard cash would have to direct their paths.

With plan in place, Crane can no longer hide his feelings for Trixie. Caught up in a web of passion and double cross with crooked inmates, a crooked warden, and crooked guards Crane's survival from day to day becomes shorter.

Damaged Goods is a creative, action-packed drama that will have readers trying to predict what will happen. Very engaging read.

Doing 25 years in prison for a failed bank job, Alonzo Crane is allowed back on the street by the prison warden to go steal a secret cargo from the Dept of Justice. (Oh, of course!) He tries to go back and put together a gang that will be able to overcome a heavily guarded building. The plot, such as it is, gets muddier when he develops a crush on his buddy's cokehead girlfriend. If you think that that's contrived and over-simplified, stay tuned if you can. I found this something that would appeal to someone without a high school diploma.

5 out of 5 stars Is Anyone Ever Really Free.......2005-08-09

Due to a botched bank robbery, the notorious Alonzo Crane finds himself doing twenty-five years in federal prison. Dubbed the "The Motion Picture Bank Robber," has earned Crane not only props, but also the recognition of some of the deadliest cliques known within the prison system.
Ten years into his sentence, in league with the prison gangs the warden summons Crane to his office where he is then propositioned by every attending gang member to retrieve a mysterious and heavily guarded streamer trunk. If Crane is able to pull off his assignment it means his freedom, if not it could mean his death.
With his life on the line, Crane devises a ploy to enlist the aid of his ruthless former partners in crime, who no longer feel any particular alliance to him. To pique their interest and regain their loyalty, Crane assures them that the heist he is planning will yield millions. Does Crane himself have his doubts that he can see himself out of this tight spot? You are inclined to believe so when one of the first things he purchases is a cemetery plot complete with coffin. Crane is definitely playing a game of Russian roulette, but is he destined to lose?
Not that I was not interested in the characters themselves and curious to find out how their story would end, more often than not, I found myself distracted, marveling at Mr. Jefferson's skillful use of words. There is a power in his style that I do not often see. His prose is not melodic, but still the same, the words have been carefully chosen to compliment one another. Urban literature would not be my first choice when curling up with a book, but I so enjoyed Mr. Jefferson's style that I intend to read his other works.

The plot has more holes than Swiss cheese! The characters, particularly, the hot shot car dealership owner are the typical 70's stereotypes. Victoria seems to end up hating herself after having a sexual experience .. all in all very poor writing!

5 out of 5 stars a superb Who book for adults.......2005-02-21

This was a great Doctor Who book, but it is not for kids. This is the Doctor Who you read when you've grown up--the R-rated Doctor Who. The story includes references to cocaine, alcohol abuse, child prostitutes, swearing children, gay men hooking up at the park, and very graphic descriptions of violence and gore. These references do not detract from the story at all. In fact, it makes one even more pulled in to the reality of Davies world. It makes this one of the most believable Doctor Who stories I've ever come across. The gripping edginess of this realistic, harsh world makes the final battle all the more believable even though it is wildly fantastical. Davies writes a great Who book, and it's shame he didn't write more than one. But we can be thankful he is the producer of the new 2005 TV series:) Thanks, Russell!

5 out of 5 stars Damaged As Folk.......2004-03-29

Despite the continued release of massively restored old adventures onto DVD, over the course of the next twelve months DAMAGED GOODS will almost certainly be the Doctor Who story most revisited by fans. The reason is obvious. When author Russell T Davies wrote DAMAGED GOODS in 1996, he was simply a promising newcomer who had some relatively impressive television credits to his name. Since then, his career has done nothing but rise. He produced, created and wrote QUEER AS FOLK, TOUCHING EVIL, and THE SECOND COMING, was nominated for Sainthood, saved the humpbacked whale from extinction, caused the breakup of the Spice Girls, tricked a Martian invasion fleet to fly into the sun, and was named Producer of the still unseen Doctor Who TV revival. For Doctor Who fans, the last of these accomplishments is naturally the most important.

I never got around to reading DAMAGED GOODS when it was first published; as with many of the books of this era (through no fault of their own) I found myself simply far too busy to get around to it. I knew of its impressive reputation and was pleased when I eventually secured a copy. So when I finally opened the cover I already knew that this Davies guy would be The Producer, The Writer And Main Pooh-Bah Of Doctor Who. I found myself giving the book more scrutiny than I otherwise would have, simply to see if I could find clues as to what sort of series he will create based on what he had written here.

Upon completion of the book, I realized that this approach is, of course, absolute nonsense. What I didn't get out of the book was that the new series will feature two ex-cops as companions, or will take place in a London housing estate, or will feature big, evil monsters from Gallifrey's past. What I did take away was the book's fabulous attention to detail, Davies' ability to create sympathetic, flawed, interesting characters, and his talent for pulling them all into an engaging plot that gives each person an important part to play.

Doctor Who on television almost always worked when it had interesting and believable characters. Whether the characters were realistic was another matter entirely, and while the concepts sometimes dovetailed, this, I feel, was rare. Sharaz Jek (to pick an example totally at random) is a fascinating creation whose obsessive behavior is believably conveyed. But you couldn't imagine him at the far future's equivalent of a supermarket, because within the actual story of THE CAVES OF ANDROZANI it made more sense to have a collection of archetypes rather than someone you would expect to meet on the street (or in any place outside the confines of the story being told). Davies manages to express both in his only Doctor Who novel (so far), which is a fantastic bonus as far as I'm concerned. His characters are interesting, believable, and also realistic. This formula certainly wouldn't be appropriate (or possible) for every Doctor Who story, but here it works, and thanks to Davies' skills, it works extremely well. DAMAGED GOODS is fantasy grounded in realism, which can't be an easy thing to successfully pull off.

Getting to the book itself, one of the first wishes I have is that hopefully with the new series in production, Davies will find some spare time to write some more novels (or novelisations), because his prose is wonderful. His sense of timing, his ability to effectively pace the story, and his sense of setting the proper atmosphere is superb. A scene with a dead corpse returning to life is exactly the right amount of creepy and sinister. It's nicely evocative of those Hinchcliffe-era horror stories without containing anything that feels like a retread or a copy. Pieces of it reminded me at times of the psychological horror/thrillers that Stephen Gallagher wrote in his post-Doctor Who days.

Although the story is great from cover to cover, I found myself most enjoying the little things that the book did. Little moments of humanity liberally scattered through the sections of pure horror... and, of course, the novel's themes. In DAMAGED GOODS, the dead past never really leaves the living present. Apart from the obvious zombie rising-from-the-dead parallels, there's a depressed middle-aged man who talks to the voice of his dead wife in his head, and secrets from character's pasts that never quite seem to go away. Constant and subtle repetitions of the book's themes go a long ways towards making the book coherent and powerful. The "damaged goods" of the title conveys a theme that is shockingly horrific. The more I thought about the book's content, the more I appreciated it. Revelations towards the end echo subject matter introduced earlier, making me gasp not only at the twist, but also at how deviously it subverted and built upon the seemingly innocuous prior passages.

So, what can we take from DAMAGED GOODS to look towards how the new Doctor Who series will turn out? The subject matter, the number of continuity references, the balance of humor to drama? No. At the moment, we just can't make meaningful predictions without making them so general as to be worthless. The only important thing to take from DAMAGED GOODS is that Russell T Davies is a damn good writer, and if he writes half as well for Doctor Who today as he did eight years ago, then I expect to be very pleased with the results. If you had told me six months ago the new producer for TV Doctor Who was named "Russell", I think I would have been ill. But reading DAMAGED GOODS has given me a lot of hope that Davies is the right Russell for the job.

5 out of 5 stars Tragedy, Depravity and Vampiric Waveforms in 1980's Britain........1998-06-16

The Doctor is on the track of something alien which is hitching a lift with some cocaine heading for the Quadrant in Thatcher's Britain. When he finally catches up with it he discovers a wealth of human tragedy and a half-mad weapon about to be unleashed on the unsuspecting inhabitants. This book is one of the best of the series and is a continuation of the psi-powers arc. Characterisation is spot on with Chris getting involved with one of the natives, Roz champing at the bit to engage the enemy and the Doctor knowing more than he's letting on. There is also another dirty secret from Gallifrey's past lurking in the shadows. This is a brave experiment by the author - mixing real-life scenarios and characters with science fiction and ending up with an emotionally-charged action adventure which will leave you breathless at the sheer pace of the story.

The reason is that I know people that knew Ms Crowder when she was a student at K-State Unvs in Manhatten, Ks & they have a slightly different view of her. Just wondering why she left that part of her life out of the book. Not a bad book, but not a great one either.

            Book Description

I was so anxious to lose my virginity that I never thought of all the consequences that came with it.

In this titillating personal account, Damaged Goods, author O. Persaud sums up the sultry sex life of his main character, Chris, from his first intimate experience to finding a woman that he truly loves.

The “every man for himself” mentality has corrupted Chris' ideals, whether regarding friends, family, material possessions, or women. When he makes a move, he never takes other people's feelings into consideration. Therefore, he can never stay true to anyone to whom he supposedly commits. Chris believes that others are only here in this world for his benefit, and he is willing to deny peoples' needs—including his own—to obtain what he wants.

Nowhere in his life is this mentality more evident than in his romantic involvements. Chris soon finds himself questioning his behavior: “Why do I cheat? And how did I become the unfaithful man that I am today?” These questions serve as the basis for his next quest in life, one that may lead to true love—if he can only find the answers.

Damaged Goods provides a fresh, interesting look into the life of a young black male and his search for the nature of love.

DAMAGED GOODS is a story of a young man's sexual journey. Chris loses his virginity to an older woman and learns the hard way about love and loving women. Chris has a warped mentality when it comes to his treatment of women. He is the love `em and leave `em type of guy, and finds it very hard to commit to one woman. He spends years on a self-destructive path and it isn't until he is hurt that he starts to search deep within himself to find the answers he is so desperately seeking.

New to the literacy scene, Omar Persuad does an excellent job with DAMAGED GOODS. While portraying Chris' character, in a fast-paced manner, there are many lessons to be learned throughout the book. There are vivid accounts of the numerous sexual experiences Chris endured, from losing his virginity to trying to find the one true
love of his life. The story told is one that so many young men face in today's society on their journey to becoming a man. It's interesting to learn just what goes on inside of a man's mind. How they really view women and love. DAMAGED GOODS gives insight on the risks taken in life and the importance of treating others with respect. A must read for males and females alike.

There is a perpetual sullenness that belies a true romantic, a theme that pulses like waves through SNAFU and Net Love and As The Worm Turns, and before long you're ready to snuggle up to the writer with your favorite passages highlighted in pink marker. Over the next sixteen stories, you'll meet little lost girls and heartsick gentlemen who find solace in porcelain; he'll take you to the circus and then to London and then leave you someplace between a damp wall and an army of eight-legged adherents. He's mean like that. But it's hot, and you want him to do it again.

I'll admit- I know him personally. I've petted his cats and flustered an ex-girlfriend of his on at least one occasion. I had to work hard to put aside all of this and judge the book by its content, not from what I know of the author.

Kind of reminded me of early Harlan Ellison. Good voice, good style- if he keeps up in a similar vein I can see Rob getting more of a name as a 'modern fantasist' or whatever label they use nowadays.

            5 out of 5 stars A good read.......2007-03-15

Damaged Goods is described by Callahan on the title page as "a collection of mostly short mostly stories". Some of the stories are funny like the opener Fruit Fly the Magician in which an apartment dweller is displaced by insects that take over his place. And then there's The Tarantula King -- a spooky tale of a young man who has some hairy friends with lots of legs.

But my favorite is a story of romance. Messed up romance, to be sure -- but it has some serious authenticity. SNAFU sums up the main character's idea about the relationship with the following two sentences:

I don't know if this constitutes true love. I don't even know if there is such a thing. I'll admit I don't know much about love, but I know what I like.

Callahan's many trips into the fantastic -- there are 16 stories in all -- are packed with extreme people or situations that illustrate truth. Or pain.

Or maybe, to paraphrase William Goldman: "Truth is pain. Anyone who says different is selling something." Callahan has something to sell here: he's got a voice and style that makes it clear that he's done some hard living but retains a sense of humor. And he wraps it all up in a tight writing style that is edgy and clear. (And remarkably free of cliche`.)

The dialogue rings true; I have a feeling that he has lifted some lines directly from people he's had actual conversations with. There's nothing wrong with that -- good writers do that all the time. SNAFU, especially, had a few lines that most of us have either heard or said at different times in our lives.

Damaged Goods is a very fun read. Rob Callahan does not waste words -- he brings us right to the good stuff right away. And whether the story is silly, or absurd or heartbreaking, there is a lot of good stuff in this collection. Give this book a try!

Over the course of my little life I have read more than my fair share of books. Some I have re-read, though most I have not. Some stories have stayed with me, though most have faded to the recesses of my mind long ago. That being said, 'Damaged Goods' was an incredible find by a fabulous up-and-coming author. If you have read his stories that you can find on-line, or even his personal blog, you will find mention to some of the stories contained within this collection. I feel it unnecessary to mention those particulars again, although they are quite good. The one story from this collection that I have not yet come across mention of is 'The Box'. I know the end of this story will keep me smiling many moons from now. Due to the fact that the other stories are written so well, and offer such variety, I know this will be a book that I will read again. And again. And so on and so forth. If you enjoy writing done right, this collection is worth owning.

Homophobia, sex, desire, longing and liberation mark the terrain of these terse, often unsettling poems. From the unwelcoming streets of Kingston, Jamaica to the parks of Brooklyn, New York, G. Winston James skillfully chronicles new times in black and gay history. The Damaged Good is one of the bravest, most authentic collections of poetry in years.
