Too bare bones for my needs.......2007-08-29
Perhaps I have been spoiled by Christopher Kendris' "501 French Verbs, 4th edition", a very lush edition in the 501 verbs series. Prior and Wohlberg's "501 Latin Verbs" seems rather bare bones. Compare the front cover listing of each of these book's contents.
Helpful features I find missing from the Prior-Wohlberg text are:
- the rules of formation for the verb stems, verb tenses, noun cases, etc.
- common expressions showing each verb's usage in various meanings.
- the translation of these and other phrases.
- summary of when the various tenses and moods should be used, again hopefully with translations.
- helpful grammar (when to use the subjunctive, sequencing verbs, orthographic changes, which prepositions are appropriate and how they impact the verb meaning, etc.).
In the "501 Latin Verbs" I would also like to see some explanation of deponent verbs. Pronunciation would be helpful. How does the long mark over a vowel change the pronunciation? Why do we care if a vowel is long or short?
The high frequency verb "sum" (to be) has I believe (I am in the early stages of learning Latin) an error in its conjugation table, p. 441. The active, present, indicative, first person, plural is given as "eramus." I believe this ahould be "fueramus."
I also cannot confirm one Prior - Wohlberg definition of "precor" as "pay" in any of the Latin dictionaries I have access to. Most likely a typographical error of "pray" but my confidence in the text is diminished by these two errors.
Prior and Wohlberg do provide "compounds and related words" for most verbs, and show some alternate orthographic forms (without explanation).
I found the Betts and Franklin "The Big Gold Book of Latin Verbs" a more useful verb text, and a dollar cheaper. For example, high frequency verbs get lengthened usage explanations with examples of various meanings. All quotations are translated, with an explicit citation reference. There are 5 translated example sentences for each verb. A lengthy introduction examines each tense, its formation, and if/how it differs in meaning from English language parallels. Additionally, Betts and Franklin provide detailed discussions of moods and tenses, and three pages or so on the subtleties of the subjunctive.
A must for the Latin student!.......2007-05-02
I purchased this book after borrowing it from interlibrary loan with its usual limited lending time for our emerging 14-year-old classicist. He uses it day in, day out! A must for any Latin student.
Helpful resource for the beginning Latin Sudent.......2006-11-10
This is a great resource to help beginning Latin Students get a grasp on the many verb forms of Latin.
De Riguer!.......2006-04-23
An absolute must-have for anyone learning Latin. In case you don't know it yet, Latin is a language in which most verbs have, no kidding, more than 130 different forms each. There are rules, of course, but the sheer volume of things to memorize can really fracture your brain. This book is my constant companion while I do homework, and I'd be lost without it.
Excellent Reference Resource.......2005-12-24
with the list of 'similarly conjugated verbs at the back' this book covers a lot of ground.
are great companion to Prior's new Verb Drill book

Another fantastic three in one classic.......2007-10-11
Many of us grew up on Tintin and love them for their great nostalgia value, and reminisces of childhood, as well as the brave values of a simpler, more clarified world of yesteryear.
This volume brings together three of the best loved Tintin classics in one handy volume- and for not much more than the price of one.
They are:
Land of Black Gold
An oil crisis breaks out, leading Tintin to the Arab Emirate of Khemed. There he works his way through a series of escapades in the desert and the cities of Kemekhal and Wadesdah where Tintin must deal with the thuggery of the local Arabs . Tintin meets with Emir Ben Kalish Ezab and agress to rescue his kidnapped son Prince Abdullah leadfing him to confront his old enemy Dr Muller, as well as the impossibility of dealing with his charge, the young Abdullah. Quite fast moving and without the flow of some of the Tintin books, this adventure is nonetheless jam-packed with action. We discover that behind all the troubles are agents of a foreign power (Most likely the Soviet Union, whose menace had finally been recognized by the West when this book was first written, in French, 1950. As usual the rest of the gang such as the fiery Captain Haddock and the disastrous Thompson and Thomson add to the brew!
Destination Moon
First written in 1953, 15 years before the first real moon landing in 1969!
I like these books because of their nostalgia value, good old-fashioned values of heroism, adventure good vs. evil. . I first got hold of copies of 'Destination Moon ' and 'Explorers on the Moon' when I was ten, and I was fascinated by the world which they opened up.
Tintin and Captain Haddock fly to the uranium-rich Balkan State of Syldavia, to work with Professor Calculus on his project to send a rocket to the moon, using the mountains of Syldavia as a base. You learn a lot about the fantasyland of Syldavia, and about the unusual perception of the world of his time, by the author, Herge.
This work is amazing in its futuristic scope. The super-modern (for when it was written in1953) Sprodj Atomic Research Center, and the details of the rocket where quite an amazing concept when the book was first published, 16 years before the first real moon landing by Neil Armstrong in 1969.
It is full of adventure, such as when Tintin is wounded while surprising villains at the ventilator grid in the picturesque Syldavian Mountains; and much humour such as escapades with Captain
Haddock's pipe and Professor Calculus' hearing aid , and the famous scene of an enraged Professor Calculus `acting the goat'.
It is a great adventure for all ages, a wonderful album to have.
Explorers on the Moon
This science fictional comic , written in 1954 , 14 years before the first actual moon landing , fails to disappoint , after the precedent set by its prequel , 'Destination Moon'.
This adventure sees Tintin and friends successfully go to the moon and back , defeating such problems as a rapidly depleting oxygen source and villains who have followed them into space .
I read it when I was ten and it led me to become interested in space.
I remember sitting on top of the roof of my home , reading it , and seeing a shooting star fly by. There is something intriguing about these comics.
Fantastic little collection........2007-06-27
Don't be fooled by the size of this little book. Other readers have stated how the pictures seem much to small in this more compact version of the comics we loved as children. These are just as visually stunning as the original size comics. Best of all, it is hardcover and will not get damaged (a problem I had with the originals) and they are compact enough to take on a car ride. My son is now as much of an addict as I was at his age. Happy reading!
Love them.......2007-03-09
If you are a Tintin freak, this one is for you. Just buy them
A rich part of this bilingual Canadian's heritage.......2006-09-09
Volume 5: Land of Black Gold (1951), Destination Moon (1953), Explorers on the Moon (1954). This is the fifth instalment of my reviews of each of the seven volumes.
Land of Black Gold makes little use of Captain Haddock (it actually took form before The Crab With the Golden Claws) and is, subjectively of course, the weakest of all the Tintin adventures created after Tintin in America.
The third of the three double adventures, Destination Moon and Explorers on the Moon show an amazingly detailed lunar effort, 15 years before the real moon landing, using Syldavia vs. its communist-style rival Borduria (see King Ottokar's Sceptre) as the backdrop. We see a side of Calculus that we had not suspected, a great deal of slapstick from Haddock, highly convincing moonscapes, somewhat drab colours however, but an effective layout; the moonscapes are outstanding. Tintin's friendship with Haddock requires a little tough love. Great stories, and yet exceeded by the last two in the preceding volume and the three in Volume 6.
Land of Black Gold / Destination Moon / Explorers on the Moon (3 Complete Adventures in 1 Volume, Vol. 5).......2006-08-31
Very good story for children and aldult as well
Book Description
The Rogue Warrior has come to Moscow to investigate the assassination of Paul Mahon, U.S. Defense attaché in Russia. Marcinko knows who killed him -- Andrei Yudin, a godfather in the Russian Mafia -- and he wants to know why. Instead, he finds a cabal of corrupt, mob-linked russian politicians. The revelation gets him yanked back to Washington, where orders come down to disband his elite team of SEALs.
But even as the Pentagon's chain of command becomes a noose around his neck, Marcinko begins to cut and slash his way to the truth behind Mahon's death. More about survival than revenge, his mission soon leads him to a black-market network peddling terrorism in Paris, sinister trading in the Middle East, and a devil of a deal that puts American's safety up for sale....

There are 2 kinds of trash my mother always said..........2003-12-04
good trash and trashy trash. This is unfortunately the latter. The plot is okay. The dialogue is terrible. And it may be the worst read book on tape I have ever heard. Why authors read their own books instead of hiring a pro is a mystery to me.
Marcinko delivers yet again.......2003-10-26
Well folks what can be said about Mr. Marcinko that hasn't been said a million times already. What you have here is a man who did his time with the Navy, and a true patriot. Unlike his first book, these for the most part, are fictional stories. However they are being told from the point of view of the warrior that is carrying out orders that mean nothing to the people that issue them.
As a member of the military (Navy) I know many of you may feel my opinion is biased and I suppose it is. Yet even for non military members The Rogue Warrior series is a excellent way to enlighten yourself on what those select few do day after day.
Could have been better........2002-03-04
Nowhere as good as the first two or three in the series. If he would have stuck to the main story and not put so much opinions, the book could have been better. For every two sentences of the story, two pages were his personal opinions that we have heard before.
exciting from start to end.......2002-02-08
i have all five rouge books and it's like being there with
him on the missions i now have seal force alpha a great one
echo platoon haven't read yet and option delta nor read that yet i got these books for a birthday gift
Another Marcinko Classic!!!.......2001-12-11
Marcinko gives some dirty Russians some lessons in SEAL tactics!!! Great read, as with all of his books!!

A great destination indeed.......2007-04-18
Most people, when they think of California, probably think of Los Angeles, San Francisco, perhaps San Diego. But the bulk of the state remains more or less unspoiled wilderness, farmland, and charming small towns, and this guide takes you through what may be one of the most accessible examples of that fact. (There are currently 20 more volumes in the Great Destinations series, which you can see at http://www.countrymanpress.com.) The so-called "Central Coast" stretches from Santa Cruz (now almost a bedroom community for the Frisco Bay area) down through Santa Barbara (unfortunately the book doesn't include much information on the latter) and is notable for its scenery, wineries, history, quirky shopping opportunities, and delicious eats. The authors live and work in the region and their expertise is obvious. They begin with a look at the history, fauna and flora, and general geography and character of this 300-mile stretch, then devote separate chapters to the principal divisions of the southward drive--Santa Cruz, Monterey Bay, San Luis Obispo and the Santa Ynez Valley--plus one on the wineries that have recently come into prominence there. Each chapter includes a local map, lodging suggestions (mainly small inns and B&B's), idiosyncratic places to dine (with prices ranging from "inexpensive," up to $15, to "very expensive," $50 or more), bakeries, coffeehouses, farmers' markets, and purveyors of frozen desserts, a long section on culture (architecture, cinema, gardens, historic places, walking tours, kid stuff, museums, music, nightlife, and stage), another almost as long on recreation (beaches, bicycling, bird-watching, boating, fishing, golf, hiking, surfing, tennis), shopping (everything from books to fashion), and seasonal events arranged month-by-month. There are phone numbers for everything that has one, and many websites listed too. A closing chapter provides general information on things like banks, hospitals, and the general trends of the weather, plus a bibliography of suggested reading. There don't seem to be a great many guides that focus on this oddly out-of-the-way (considering that it lies smack-dab between the state's two most famous cities) region, but if you want to find a place in California where you can enjoy a laid-back, relaxing stay, this is the book to get to plan your trip.
Book Description
The authors give delightful, definitive reports on breathtaking Pacific vistas, serene redwood forests, the finest vineyards, unique architecture, and all the best shopping, surfing, dining - and where to reside while doing it all.

Colorful account.......2003-09-18
While making no claims to be objective, this colorful account of Gold's 2 years in Haiti and dozens of trips in the 50 years since then, captures all the wild contradictions of the magical but suffering country.
Haiti.......2001-08-30
This is an amazing book. I have traveled to Hait 5 times, my longest stay being four months. This book made me feel as if I was back in the country I love so much. I would recommend this book to anyone who's heart has been grasped by this country.
Haiti, A Nightmare You Can Sleep Through.......2000-10-20
This is one of the most compelling book that I ever read about Haiti. Mr. Gold is funny and objective. One could feel his love for Haiti popping out of the pages; he is not just another foreigner out to make a quick buck. Although his experiences in the book were limited to the capital, he gave a vivid account because he was in the thick of things. When I checked with family and friends on the veracity of some of Mr. Gold's claims, he seemed to have hit right on the money. I would recommend this book to anyone who loves Haiti.
Haiti is better than what the author had writen in his book........1999-08-25
First of all your ideas are not well founded since you did not live in Haiti long enough to place a judgement or an opinion.Your grounds are very weak when you see only one part of Haiti. Being like a horse on a race track, the author is only focusing on what you may consider the worst, I would like to know when writters are going to start publishing the right stuff about a third world country.
Highly amusing, informative &, sometimes, touching........1999-07-09
I just had to respond because the only response posted is so off the mark! Gold clearly has a deep love & respect for Haiti & Haitians. He also has a wicked sense of humour & he apparently does not feel the need to whitewash what he sees. We must have read two different books!

so so.......2002-03-07
If you take white Fang by Jack London and then butcher it this is what you get. The story was extrodanaire but the writer's writing skills were mediocere. She often boasts her vast knowledge of the klondike in her writing which stands out like a sore thumb. Thier are a few twists and turns, but not many even then. This is a book that is hard to put down while painstaking to read. I was to read this book for a school report and i thought it was below my reading level that might be why i give it such a poor rating. The book includes a love story which leaves you hanging like in the movie the castaway. Other than the love story and a few other things it pretty much remains the same as white fang. If your looking to read a good klondike based novel look into Jack Londons novels or anywhere else but here. The book is about 200 pages which makes for a short read. The book is meant for 5th graders in my own humble opinion and could make a great class read along. There are only a few books which I reserve for my "not worthy of being in my book shelf" section that i have read. I still only wish a worthy author could have taken on such an impressive storyline. The charcters in the book are very good and have such depth to each specific one. The executive publisher should have spent more time on this certain novel to improve the quality of the writing.Good luck on wether you choose or not to choose to read this book, you may need it.
Bilimptious Book........Must Read!!!!!!!!.......2002-01-12
The book that i read was Destination Gold! It is about a boy named Ned Turner who travels up to the Klondike. Up there he has a lot of new experiences with a lot of new people. He has a sister named Sarah. She decides to go up there also. There she has tragic events and memorable experiences She meets a girl along the way named Catherine. She is haunted my the nightmare of the day her dad bet her in a poker game and lost. The story is about a young mans journey to persue his dreams of getting gold and happiness for his friends and family. I recommend this book to you because it has a good and interesting plot. It is action-packed, educational, and a very good historical fiction or class-wide reading book.
