Book Description
From Âchzen (to groan) to ziehen (to pull), 501 of the most commonly used German verbs are presented alphabetically with translations. The arrangement is one verb per page in easy to comprehend table form. Each verb is listed with its principal parts and followed by complete conjugation in all tenses. Additional material includes tables of strong verbs arranged according to pattern of change, and a section on prefix verbs and model auxiliaries. An added feature in this edition is a set of 27 verb tests with answers explained. Language students will also find weather expressions as they are used with impersonal verbs, a selection of German idioms and proverbs, and a concise review of rules for verb tenses and moods. This book, with its emphasis on grammatical form, makes a fine classroom supplement for beginner, intermediate, and advanced courses in German.

FANTASTIC........2007-10-06
This is one of my favorite German books. Great for reference, goes hand in hand with a dictionary, and EXTREMELY USEFUL in College Level German.

Good, not great.......2007-04-18
The examples and conjugation lists are quite useful and accurate. Lacks of important verbs and contains loads of inutile ones. Nichts besonders.
501 seem not to be enough!.......2007-03-31
I'm somewhat dissapointed with this book because of its lack of some important verbs. It seems that 501 verbs is not enough. Hopefully they will add some verbs to the list in the revision if it ever comes out.
Indispensable.......2007-01-03
This is a great book. I was first introduced to this series with the French book in high school. The German book is just as good. Absolutely indispensable for anyone learning a language.
Extremely Useful.......2006-11-11
This book has been great. I'm currently taking German 101 in college and while it might not be necessary for that class I've used it a great number of times. It is very well laid out and it is easy to find the correct conjugation of the verbs. It even has separable-prefix verbs. I'd recommend this book to anyone that would like a quick reference on how to conjugate some of the more common verbs.
Book Description
The most commonly used 510 German verbs are arranged alphabetically in a table format, one verb per page with English translation, and conjugated in all tenses and forms. The bookÂ's additional features include common idioms with example sentences to demonstrate verb usage and a grammar review. This book includes a bonus CD-ROM enclosed at no additional charge. The CD-ROM presents valuable exercises for students in German sentence completion, word completion, word matching, and conversational dialogue, with answers provided for all exercises.

A perfect reference book for German class.......2005-10-16
Just how many verbs are you going to use in class?
This is an excellent reference and as a side benefits it helps with an understanding of English with the Tenses and moods in German and English equivalents. It is written in a form that you can recite the tenses in you mind before speaking.
Your next purchase for class should be The Oxford-Druden Pictorial German-English Dictionary ISBN: 0198645023
Achtung!.......2005-02-04
Henry Strutz was an associate professor of languages at State University of New York in Alfred, New York, when he put this book together. The volume I have has a publication date of 1972 - this is, however, the kind of book that doesn't really go out of date. Language does change, but the basics of languages remain steady over several generations in general, and German is no exception. The basic core of the language remains constant, so this book holds up over time. Subsequent printings of this book may add a verb here and drop a verb there (given the title, it will always try to stay at 501 verbs), but the vast majority will remain the same.
I studied German at university almost 25 years ago, and first purchased this book to go along with my studies. While German is fairly standard in the patterns of conjugations for most verbs, German like most languages has exceptions to many rules, including exceptions to some of the most frequently used verbs, such as the verb constructions for to be (English is the same, with this being one of the most difficult verb constructions for non-English speakers to learn). The verb sein (bin, bist, ist, sind, seid, sind) is one of the most important verbs; haben is another important verb, given its `helping verb' status (true also in English), as it occurs in constructions with other verbs.
There are 501 verbs here, one each to a page, arranged in alphabetical order. From achten (to pay attention to) to zwingen (to force, compel), most of the verbs found in eighty percent or more of regular conversation and general writing are to be found here. Each page is laid out in a logical order, with indicative forms (the most common and simple forms) on the left, and subjunctive forms (primary and secondary, as appropriate) on the right. It steps through the various verb tenses: present, past (imperfect, perfect, and pluperfect), future and future perfect. Rare is the verb that doesn't follow these patterns - some verbs, such as geschehen (to happen, to take place, to come to pass) have simplified patterns given the use in parts of speech (rare is the sentence in English or in German where someone would say, `I have come to pass...').
Strutz has an introduction of 45 pages (not numbered along with the verbs, but rather using Roman numerals, so that the 501 verbs can correspond to 501 text pages). This introduces a very basic grammar, a discussion of the verb tenses and their uses, different kinds of conjugations, and sets out a pattern page in English to aid users in following the German pages of verbs.
In discussing word order, Strutz quotes Mark Twain, who once said of the German language, `The German goes to bed with his subject and wakes up with his verb.' According to Strutz, Twain is once supposed to have refused to leave a play, despite its being dreadful, because he was waiting for the verb. Strutz injects humour into the serious aspect of language study such as he can (how much can one do with a simple listing of verbs?), particularly in the early pages with grammar discussion. He also addresses pronunciation issues, and looks at particular forms that are regionally different. Knowing his audience is largely academic/student readers, he draws examples from literature, philosophy (Nietzsche), and music.
Despite this good introduction, this book should not be confused with being a German grammar or language study. This introductory material is but the briefest of introductions, intended primarily as a refresher for those who have studied German before, or are studying German concurrently with using this text.
Strutz has several indexes. There is an English-to-German index of words represented in the text; there is a German-to-English index in the same pattern. Many `prefix verbs' are conjugated on the primary pages - words like ankommen (to arrive) and bekommen (to receive); however, there are others for which only the basic verb is conjugated - prefix formations are included in the index in parenthetical form. Finally, there is a brief index of verbs identified by infinitive form, given that some verbs change sufficiently in various conjugate forms to not be intuitively obvious for the beginner to understand which word it is.
I'm trying to recapture my reading German this year, so that I can do some theological research using various German texts in the coming academic year. I find this book invaluable - it is perhaps of more value when one is trying to write than when one is trying to read, but it is still very useful, so much so that the binding on my copy has cracked from use.

strain your brain. Jr. Detective.......2004-02-17
With just one question, the supersmart Leroy (a.k.a Encyclopedia) Brown will solve each mystery as he has for the past thirty years, using his superior logic skills. And because readers love to match wits with him, this series will endure for many more years, it is certain. Teachers can bedevil their students by reading a mystery each morning (they take about a minute each) and then letting the class try to solve it before the end of the day. When I did this, I had to hide the book in the trunk of my car because the kids were desperate to figure out the answer. Delightfully innocent, wonderfully tricky, all ages will love these quick vignettes with answers at the back of the book. Would also be good to use with seniors!
Encyclopedia Brown and the Case of the Jumping Frogs.......2003-11-13
Boy detective, Encyclopedia Brown returns as a parody of himself. What can you expect from a boy who's been 10 for 30 years? The stories (cases) takes place in a parallel time not the past and not the present. It's a time where kids have names like Herb, Rupert, and Wilford and a foil named Bugs Meany. You can still hire a boy detective for 25 cents a day and preteens say things like, "stop beating your gums," and "keen for the green." There is something appealing about heroes being called "goody goods," by their foes and being told to, "go adopt an egg." It's good innocent fun. As for the mysteries, they are as clever and incomprehensible as the earlier books in the series--many will try, but few will figure them out. Solutions are in the back of the book.

A hit with my 4 year old daughter and 7 month old son!.......2000-04-26
I took this book out from the library originally and my daughter and son loved it. It is a must have. The little tadpole wants so badly to jump. He meets up with various animals that can. He asks them all to jump and they all Boing (jump) for him (my son's favorite part) Then the tadpole says, But I want to jump now!" (my daughters part). All the animals teach him to be patient for his time will come. The tadpole grows into a frog throughout the book. Finally when he meets up with the big bad fish who eats tadpoles he BOINGS himself back to the lily pads and is safely home with his mother. He is also now a frog.

An essential reference for paperfolding enthusiasts.......2001-07-11
The art of paperfolding has been one of my interests for many years and one I enjoy sharing with my students. This book is a great reference, first of all because the illustrations are very clear and easy to follow. The projects range from simple to somewhat advanced, but none are too difficult to make once you understand the basic folds. My students are always particularly fascinated by the figures that "do things" such as the "Chinese Balloon," which you can blow up and toss around, the "Bird with Flapping Wings," which really seems to fly, and the "Snapping Alligator," which, well, you guessed it. Other paperfolds from this book that never cease to amuse children as well as adults are the "Money Fold Bow Tie," and "Jumping Frog." If you are not sufficiently amazed with your finished paperfold as it is, the author gives additional options and uses for each. Paperfolding is beautiful, magical and tons of fun. This book is a must have if you enjoy the art as much as I do.
useful for beginners.......2000-09-27
Very useful book, especially for beginners. Unlike some of the Japanese origami books, this assumes no prior cultural knowledge, so you can knock off some easy projects quickly, and do some quite complicated ones later. Recommended!
Fun & Easy to learn.......2000-03-31
This book is amazing! It has many interesting projects to do. Unlike other origami books, this book teaches you easy methods of folding. It doesn't take long for you to become a master at origami and you'll have fun too. Invest in this book soon and you won't regret it.

Can frogs really be "THAT" big?.......1999-01-23
Yes - they can. At Heights Elementary in Pittsburg California back 35 years ago or so we would have a jumping frog contest every year in the circles used for kick ball. All the kids would bring giant frogs and let them go from the center of the ring. OH MY! It was so much fun - all because of this book (I am still scared of frogs to this day) but I love the book and every kid should read it.
excellent.......1998-07-28
"Jumping Frog" is a wonderful, hilarious story (among a group of several other great ones) that my father read to me as a kid. If you love Twain, get it.

Spring Awakening (2006 Original Broadway Cast)
ASIN: 0520248333 |
Book Description
The University of California Press is delighted to announce the new publication of this three-act play by one of America's most important and well-loved writers. A highly entertaining comedy that has never appeared in print or on stage, Is He Dead? is finally available to the wide audience Mark Twain wished it to reach. Written in 1898 in Vienna as Twain emerged from one of the deepest depressions of his life, the play shows its author's superb gift for humor operating at its most energetic. The text of Is He Dead?, based on the manuscript in the Mark Twain Papers, appears here together with an illuminating essay by renowned Mark Twain scholar Shelley Fisher Fishkin and with Barry Moser's original woodcut illustrations in a volume that will surely become a treasured addition to the Mark Twain legacy.
Richly intermingling elements of burlesque, farce, and social satire with a wry look at the world market in art, Is He Dead? centers on a group of poor artists in Barbizon, France, who stage the death of a friend to drive up the price of his paintings. In order to make this scheme succeed, the artists hatch some hilarious plots involving cross-dressing, a full-scale fake funeral, lovers' deceptions, and much more.
Mark Twain was fascinated by the theater and made many attempts at playwriting, but this play is certainly his best. Is He Dead? may have been too "out there" for the Victorian 1890s, but today's readers will thoroughly enjoy Mark Twain's well-crafted dialogue, intriguing cast of characters, and above all, his characteristic ebullience and humor. In Shelley Fisher Fishkin's estimation, it is "a champagne cocktail of a play--not too dry, not too sweet, with just the right amount of bubbles and buzz."
Customer Reviews:
Delightful bit of Fun from Mark Twain!.......2004-10-13
I must preface my review with the truth that I am totally and hopelessly Twain obsessed. I won't say that only a Twain lover will "get" this play but it certainly wouldn't hurt! I enjoyed it immensely and laughed out loud many times. Theatre was one of Twain's passions and he struggled all his life to write a successful play with variable results. This effort is delightful!
I found the interactions between the two couples sweet and touching and the comeraderie between the group of artists was good natured and engaging. But the best part was the gender reversal which was the funniest part of the play. It is amazing that Twain wrote this upbeat and optimistic piece as he was clawing his way out of a deep depression after his daughters death. The introduction and afterward are fascinating, both produced by the excellent and much appreciated Bancroft Library Mark Twain Project. I can't wait to see what they publish next!!
Book Description
An adaptation of Mark Twain's wonderful story set in California's gold-rush days. This is the story that made Angel's Camp, California famous for its annual frog jumping contest. The story relates the hilarious escapades of Jim Smiley who would bet on anything (even if he had to change sides to get the bet going). There is "The Fifteen Minute Nag" (a horse that looked so bad the other horse owners would give her a head start) that could win any race, Andrew Jackson (Smiley's pet dog that could beat any dog until he came across an opponent with no hind legs), and the famous educated jumping frog by the name of Daniel Webster.

Book about the perils of translation.......2006-02-27
The Jumping Frog is an interesting tale, but this book is more about the difficulties of translations than about the Jumping Frog itself. You can probably find the Jumping Frog in other collection of Twain's books, so don't bother to buy this book if you are only interested in the tale. It is only a three-page tale.
To make a long story short, the Jumping Frog was translated into French with the objective of demoralizing Twain's humor. Obviously, the humor in this tale was more in between the lines and in the form it was written than about the story itself (which was silly and not funny.)
As Twain says, however, the translator "has not translated it at all; he has simply mixed it all up; it is no more like the Jumping Frog when he gets through with it than I am like a meridian of longitude." To prove his point, Twain proceeded to translate the French translation "back into a civilized language" [i.e. English] to show that the French translation did not do justice to his work.
This book has the original tale in the first pages, then the French translation, and then the English version of the French translation.
It is more a personal vendetta from Twain than a work of literature. But it is an important work for those interested in translation.
Quick, Lite Read.......2001-07-29
This is a little silly story about a man who has a rather humorous betting habit and focuses on the account of some bets he placed with a highly talented jumping-frog that he owned.
The story is not half bad and I understand that it became quite popular and was one of the first writings to bring Twain into the limelight. Even so, I do not feel that story - short as it is - stands the test of time as do other writings of Mark Twain. Don't be fooled though, the story is a nice quick and light read, especially if you want to divert your attention from the lull of boredom or any other times of inactivity.
Good tale for kids.......2001-01-29
I've decided to renew my interest in Mark Twain, having read and enjoyed "Roughing It". I found out that this was Twain's first success, and decided to give it a try. It's a very short, amusing and enjoyable story that adults should be able get through in a matter of minutes, and I should imagine that kids would enjoy: but I would not recommend experimenting on the local amphibia to test the veracity of Twain's story!

Customer Reviews:
My son loves it!.......2001-08-16
My 19 month old son just loves this book. I read it to him the first time and showed him how to make the frog "jump" from page to page, and now he makes it jump himself. (the frog on the front cover is a diecut that is attached by a short ribbon so it can move from page to page). The diecut is strong enough so if it ends up in his mouth it is not destroyed! It's a great interactive book for toddlers. It also describes different animals on each page and then shows them at the end all together so you can review them all on one page.
