3 out of 5 stars Very Disappointing!.......2007-02-15

I bought this book for my wife who is a native Spanish speaker that learned English by speaking and not from classes, so her English vocablulary is limited. So I thought that this book would have several words she didn't know. Going through the entire book, I was only unfamiliar with less than a handful and we felt that that it did not give anything more than my basic Spanish/English dictionary. Another complaint is that Amazon sells it for $3.99 which along with the shipping makes it cost over $ 6.00 but the book itself is marked $2.00. Also, in many instances a word has more than one meaning but the author was lax in not providing all meanings as a good dictionary would.

The good thing about it is that it simplifies culling out of a dictionary for the beginning student, some of the very common words. As I would prefer to have a pocket dictionary with me I think it is an unnecessary expense to have to also add this book.

5 out of 5 stars Great for ESL Students.......2005-07-24

I teach English in Buenos Aires. I bought this book for my students. It is a great book because it explains the English slang in Spanish so they can relate to it.

3 out of 5 stars lacks pronunciation guide.......2005-05-13

I found this book helpful, it is more than comprehensive in terms of its scope and the categories make it easy to navigate. My big problem with this compilation is that there is no pronunciation given in the definitions, so there is no way to know how each English word is to be pronounced. This is so important because English pronunciation is very irregular. I had some of my ESL students just throw this book out because they couldn't make anything of it.

5 out of 5 stars Words you can rely on!.......2003-08-09

This book is very practical. It contains a good selection of commonly used words in the English language. It is a handy book that you can take anywhere with you. It is indeed a very useful, thin dictionary that not only provides the meaning of each word listed, but also gives you a sentence using each word in its right context. Good value as well.

5 out of 5 stars This is a wonderful book.......2002-04-29

When I first purchases this book, I did so because it was only a [price] when I purchased 501 spanish verbs for my Spanish II class. I figured, "Why not?" When I recieved it I was suprised and impressed what a wonderful learning tool it is. For any begining spanish students, there are very useful words that you won't find in 1st and 2nd year textbooks that are quite important. The sentences they use really do bring quite a bit of clarity to the use of the word. Also the sentences themselves have many words to help increase your vocabulary. Buy this book. It is very much worth it.

2 out of 5 stars Caution, parents.......2007-06-08

The cover and title of this book are fun and enticing and immediately caught my eye at the bookstore - thinking of my daughter who is completing her senior year of high school. I flipped through some pages and the quotes and suggestions seemed thoughtful and interesting. When I got home, I took a closer look and noticed the chapters titled: "Going out, hooking up, dating and sex" and "Parties 101: How to have fun and be safe". I immediately flipped to these chapters to see what advice would be offered to my teen and was surprised to find - as is stated in the editorial review posted on this sight - not only mixed messages, but a real sense that drinking and hooking up were natural parts of the college experience. Of course, reality is that these things do tend to be part of the college experience, but as adults, producing books for guidance for teens, it would seem we would serve them better by presenting a message of discouraging these activities. This book does not do that. In fact, one message sent in the book is "As long as you're staying on top of your work, you're not partying too much". Hmm...not the attitude I want my daughter to learn. While I did find some parts of the book interesting and sometimes amusing - I will be returning this book and looking for one that provides a better message to my daughter.

It's fun to read and is a good resource from real students who have been through their college freshman year! I've already bought it for four recent high school graduates. I think it's the perfect graduation gift.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome book. Easy read........2006-04-18

It's great to get so much advice from people who have recently gone through freshman year of college (much better than books written by school counsellors or authors who haven't been in college for 20 years).

This is the best gift for a high school senior. The new one is even better than the last edition....

Book Description

You Lose Some, You Lose Some authors Lou Harry and Eric Furman continue their preoccupation with failure with In the Can — a look at fifty major movie stars and their biggest critical and box office duds. Some stars’ lowest moments may be obvious, while others take a bit more digging. Sections include:
• Bury It (or, Go Directly to Video/DVD): Including Jerry Lewis’s legendary (and never released) The Day the Clown Cried and Jim Varney and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar in Slam Dunk Ernest.
• Out of the Vaults: Forgotten movies that get dragged into the spotlight when a star hits it big, like Kevin Costner’s Sizzle Beach U.S.A. and Sylvester Stallone’s Party at Kitty and Stud’s.
• Oscar Jinx: You’d think an Oscar would lead one to better projects. Sometimes you’d be wrong. Think Jane Darwell after The Grapes of Wrath or Marisa Tomei after My Cousin Vinny.

2 out of 5 stars Disappointning, underresearched effort.......2006-06-03

This book sounded good: An alphabetical listing of nearly all recent movie stars with a discussion of each star's worst film. To qualify, a film had to be both a commercial and critical disaster. Only problem is the authors appear to have written the book over a long weekend. The entries are very short -- usually a page, sometimes less -- and contain almost no background on the films, apart from their box office take and, occasionally, quotes from reviewers. We all know Halle Berry's a fine actress and Catwoman was a bomb. Why not tell us how she came to make the film, what problems the film encountered in production that made it so bad, and so forth? The authors did essentially no research that might have enabled them to discuss these issues. Instead they provide a brief summary of the actor's career before and after the bomb under consideration and make a few smart remarks about the movie itself. They would have to be far wittier than they are to pull this off. In short, if you are movie fan, you probably already know everything you will read in this book. For a much better book on the same subject, check out James Robert Parish's Fiasco.

5 out of 5 stars A great idea...and a fun, informative read.......2005-10-06

The authors seem to have had a very rough job while researching this book--it consists of nothing but big, big Hollywood bombs. I never thought it would be this fun reading about Battlefield Earth, Surviving Christmas, Mary Reilly and other tanks by Hollywood's biggest stars. Lots of interesting information. It's a page-turner.

    Book Description

Three socially mismatched teens are trapped in the school darkroom during a violent earthquake. Despite being raised in the same church, they consider themselves far too different to be friends - until they discover God had other plans. After being rescued, Tiffany fears she will be permanently blind, Josh that he'll be handicapped, and Mo that he'll never speak again. Upon awakening in the hospital the following day, each of them discovers that in addition to being healed, they have been given supernatural gifts. Tiffany can see people's darkest, most painful moments, Josh can identify those in need, and MO cannot stop himself from spouting scripture and encouragement. Individually, they may feel they are going crazy, but together they are an evangelism task force that cannot be stopped - until the gifts are abruptly taken away. These teens must learn real-life lessons of unity, servanthood, and the power of the Holy Spirit.

5 out of 5 stars Spiritually Encourged and Special Gifts.......2004-07-16

I really enjoyed this book because, I fully understood that the teens did not like each other. But when the earthquake happened they all pull together the christian beliefs and prayer and left behind the anger. A lot of us are afraid to talk to others about God. We need to become a little more christian like and share the joy that God has given us. There are ways that we can speak to others so we share the gifts that God gives us. I thought it was very inspiring to give one the gift to lead the others to someone that needed help. The the girl had the eyes to see what situations that others were needed help with. Then the other teen was able to speak to all in a way to get them to join and be saved. This book has inspired me to talk to others about the good things that come when you come to Christ. There are even some things that I read that help me to give someone else a word that will help them to come join with us to be saved.

This book should be read by all teens. There are words of wisdom, faith, hope, charity, love and prayer.

We are all given gifts that we should share with others

      Product Description

Anyone who says that youth is wasted on the young never met Erik & Isabelle The two best friends, a year older and a tad wiser, return to Foresthill High to commence their Sophomore Year in the second book of Kim Wallaces groundbreaking series for gay and lesbian youth. Sophomore Year picks up on the first day of school, launching the protagonists into a flurry of new adventures. Erik finds himself at the center of more than one young mans attention as he reaches out beyond the closet and embraces the joy and sorrow that life has to offer. Meanwhile, Isabelle continues to propel her conservative town towards acceptance as she exercises dramatic flair to impact the minds and lives around her. Ripe with the angst and comedy that embody high school life, these memorable characters prevail with optimism and hope that will resonate in young people everywhere. Once impressionable freshmen, Erik and Isabelle are now the ones leaving the impressions as they aim to make their Sophomore Year at Foresthill High an unforgettable one.

3 out of 5 stars Back for another year..........2006-05-16

Erik & Isabelle are typical high school sophomores. Erik runs on the school's cross country team while Isabelle prefers to work on the latest project for their drama class. Like most students, they hate homework and love school vacations. But unlike the other students at Foresthill High, they're both gay.

In Erik & Isabelle: Sophomore Year at Foresthill High, the best friends start off the school year with a bang. The twosome, along with Isabelle's newest friend Maxine, make a pact to find some way to make their sophomore year amazing. After deciding to hold a race for charity, the three friends launch themselves into preparations, not realizing the year will be more unforgettable than they think.

But all is not well in the town of Foresthill. Erik still hasn't told his parents about his true sexuality, afraid of what his conservative military father will think. When his boyfriend Jeremy commits suicide because of depression, Erik must find a way to not only deal with his grief, but who he is. Afraid to tell his parents about the true nature of his relationship with Jeremy, Erik slips into depression himself.

Meanwhile, Isabelle and Maxine decide it is time to promote tolerance in Foresthill. Using her talent for the dramatic, Isabelle concocts a scheme to help other teens be more accepting of each other. Can she pull off the plan while helping Erik overcome his pain? Will Erik ever be able to come out of the closet? Will Maxine ever be able to tell Isabelle that she loves her? And why is the school's star quarterback following Erik around? You'll just have to read the book to find out.

The best thing about this book was the fact that it dealt with the problems every teen faces in high school. Erik & Isabelle may be gay, but they struggle through homework, cliques, relationships and uncertainty just like other teens. Short chapters and an easy writing style add to the merits of the book, making it a fairly quick read. Although it can be read without reading the first one (Erik & Isabelle: Freshman Year at Foresthill High) , I recommend reading the other one first so some of the situations make more sense.

Recommended for high school age teens, especially those interested in GLBT books. A caution to younger readers: this book does contain some sexual scenes, although they are not overly graphic.

      3 out of 5 stars only half a year.......2005-09-17

I enjoyed the characters and the story in SOPHOMORE YEAR... Erik struggling with an absent military father and a passive mother... Isabelle thriving as her art is expanding... Both navigating the confusing waters of young love. The premise is a great one and I look forward to the rest of the series. In many ways, I feel that Miss Wallace is truly compassionate with her characters, she writes from a place of truth, either her own or her students. I know this. because this story is similar to my own coming out story. My biggest criticism of this novel is that it ends at New Year's Eve... It's an incredibly romantic scene, but am I going to miss out on the next six months until they go back to school? Kim, don't do that to me...

      5 out of 5 stars A must read!.......2005-08-24

When I picked up this book I found it almost impossible to put down. E&I draws the reader in and keeps them wanting more. I enjoyed watching the characters develop through out the book. The author doesn't shy away from the hard topics that GLBT youth (and adults) are dealing with. I know that this book will have a huge impact on GLBT people of all ages and I think that all people should read this book. I can't wait for the next book to come out.

      5 out of 5 stars Saving Lives.......2005-08-22

How long have we waited for someone to come along and provide a positive book series for young people dealing with their sexuality and the many issues of 'growing up'? Finally, it is here! In the GLBT community in particular, most teens have very little material to relate to, other than magazines, that share their journey of life that most have traveled when dealing with their sexual orientation and being and feeling 'different'. E&I gives young people hope; that they are not alone and that there are others 'just like them' out in the world, dealing with the same issues, wanting the same things in life. It reminds us that ultimately we all simply want someone to love us just as we are, and someone to love. We believe this book will save lives, allowing young people to know that there are others out there who care and are sharing their journey.

2 out of 5 stars much better than the previous one........2005-08-20

i am forever facinated with the rave reviews these books are recieving. having read over 30 books on emergent female queerness aimed at adolescents, these easily fall into the most preachy and condesending books. but, at least people are enjoying them, and it is great that there are a wider variety of GLBT teen books becoming available; even if some of them are extremely conservative.

what facinates me is how every single reference to drinking is accompanied by 'badness.' not that i am encouraging teenage binge drinking, but honestly, it's hardly realistic. but, i digress.

the writing of this book is far, far better than that of erik and isabelle freshman, and at least the author is attempting to tackle real issues that effect glbt youth, such as teenage suicide. the characters are growing, although in a highly contrived and didactic manner, and i find the preoccupation with christianity a little confusing. but, like i said, still good to see that there are more books like this out there.

            Book Description

"War´s Wake" is an ethereal re-creation of an obsessive romance in the aftermath of World War II. On a university campus bulging with ex-GIs, a traumatized combat veteran and a sophomore fell madly in love. Years later, the long-dead sophomore, invading his computer as he tries to make a novel of his life, lures him back to reprise what went wrong. Their bittersweet reassessments and besotted indulgences provide a wacky tour of Truman-era, greatest-generation morality, a sobering look at postwar USA, and a passionate time-travel love story about memory, commitment, and decisive decisions that frame our lives.

Set on the campus of a western university and a magical island—a sort of Garden of Eden—in a nearby city park, War's Wake is a bittersweet story of lost love. As the tale plays out it is also a bit of subtle spoofing of compulsive romance and the manners, mores, and politics of the greatest generation's immediate postwar period. For the old infantry sergeant, reentry into civil society was not all beds of roses framed with white picket fences.

Lost love, however, is not always to be lamented, particularly when transformed to a fairytale in the blurred light of a bygone time. Drawing upon imagination stimulated by a bevy of old photographs from his high school and college years before and after World War II, the author has created a seductive novel of autobiographic fiction taking the reader into fantasy worlds that never were but might have been. The photographs, appearing at the end of the narrative, give a powerful authenticity to the fiction, making it almost believable amid all of its bizarre fancies and contradictions. We accept because who among us has not envisaged lives different from those we have actually experienced?
