Horrible Map.......2007-06-13
I don't know much about creating maps, but I know that it should reflect real cities and towns, and it should reflect the actual distance between the those towns (using a scale, for example, 1:10). This map does not do any of that. The only thing that is correct on this map is the roads. The raods are actually there, thank God. I would give this map 0 stars if I could.
I just wonder if the people who created this map tryed using it. I do not recommend using it.
Excellent map and current.......2006-05-12
I bought this map before taking a driving trip in the Yucatan in April 2006. It is an excellent road map and has current road information which is important because older maps are missing roads. Signage in the Yucatan can be very poor. I highly advise buying a road map if you're driving around the Yucatan at all! It saved us a few times from long backtracks after we missed turnoffs due to poor signage.

Way Too Technical for the Average Beach Bum.......2007-07-20
I was looking for a book for our kids and us to use to identify marine life we found and to learn a little about it. This book reads more like a graduate school textbook. Also, a few color pictures would have been nice; this book has only ink drawings whick are dull and not very helpful in distinguishing different creatures with subtle variations. There is nothing fun about this book. A friend who is a marine biologist looked at it and agreed with my assessment.

A Wonderful and Useful Book. Makes you want to get out and Explore!.......2007-04-01
As a New Mexcio native I have seen and owned a number of books about the mountains of the State. This book is well organized and laid out and it invites you to take time and learn about all the various mountain ranges available to us in NM. The photography is first class and inspiring in the their own right. I particularly like the organization and format of the book. The size is just right and the information is presented in a way that is fun and just enough to answer all the main questsions without going into an overload of detail. A high quality folded two sided map is included in a back pocket and the map augments the information inside the book. This is a great gift fo people who appreciate the wonders on NM and want to to learn and explore more. Mike Butterfield and Peter Greene have done a great job with the book. Five stars are not enough.

Good for Trinidad, Bad for Tobago.......2007-08-16
As one might expect, every book, and in this case, map, for Trinidad & Tobago emphasizes the larger of the sister islands, Trinidad. Granted, this is probably where most visitors go - but as we are only visiting Tobago, we were hoping for a qood quality map of the smaller island. This map was not the answer. If you are looking for a good map for Trinidad, this will be for you. The size is large, the color and detail is good, and the material is relatively durable yet flexible (specially coated paper to make it water resistent, but it's not laminated by any means - and might tear eventually). Unfortanately for us, the map of Tobago was relegated to the top corner of the Trinidad map. I was quite disappointed to see that the map was completely blank on one side; a horrible amount of wasted space - and opportunity. It seems that one side could have been used for Trinidad and the reverse side for Tobago. This would have allowed the map of Tobago to be large enough that more details, more roads, more village names, and more landmarks, etc. could have been included in a format that would also be easier to view. Bottom line: if you're looking for a nice map of Trinidad - this is a good option, perhaps the only one we've seen. If, like us, you need a nice map of Tobago - keep looking.
A good map.......2007-03-22
This map was helpful, though it didn't include a close-up section for POS which hurts.

friendly and factual.......2006-01-16
I found this book to be most helpful on a quick jaunt into this lush, charming area. The information and guides for Campeche and environs were most precise, including the most sophisticated and elegant restaurants, hotels and day trips. What I felt was strong research helped lend an air of authenticity and credence to the areas we visited, steps above other books that seemed to be mostly backpacking guides to this lovely area.
Book Description
Newly revised and updated, this comprehensive field guide describes the four deserts of the American Southwest--the Great Basin, Mojave, Chihuahuan, and Sonoran--which together stretch into nine southwestern states and Mexico. The topography, geology, and climatic conditions of these arid lands set the stage for one of the most fascinating of ecological studies: the survival and adaptation of animal and plant life in the severe, often extreme desert climate and terrain.
Abundantly illustrated with line drawings, maps, charts, and diagrams, The Deserts of the Southwest offers both the outdoor adventurer and the armchair naturalist a clear and detailed portrait of this complex, beautiful, fragile wilderness.
Customer Reviews:
The Southwest Deserts Come Alive.......2000-05-13
We camped for a week in the Davis Mountains in west Texas in a section of the Chihuahuan desert last summer. This was not our first desert experience - we have hiked and camped across much of the Southwest over the last twenty years or so. This was an unplanned trip as we were headed toward southern Colorado, but we became fascinated by the Chihuahuan desert and somehow we never drove any further.
We were similarly quite lucky to find a copy of the first edition of Peggy Larson's Sierra Guidebook in a bookstore in Alpine, Texas. She presents the deserts of the American southwest (and northern Mexico) in a literate and educated fashion. She manages to discuss individual plants and animals in some detail while painting a large scale, beautiful portrait of the four major deserts of North America. Detailed ink drawings - landscape, geology, plants, and animals - are scattered throughout the narrative and add considerable value. She knows her subject and shares her knowledge in an intriguing fashion. She effectively uses scientific names of desert plants and animals interchangeably with common (but less unique) names without intimidating the reader. This is not a novel and it is quite possible to skip to selected chapters of personal interest, but I highly recommend exploring all chapters, all topics. Peggy Larson's style is really quite good.
If you are already familiar with the American deserts, you will find "The Deserts of the Southwest" a rewarding visit with an old friend. If you are somewhat new to the deserts and possibly have only sampled the deserts from a highway perspective, I suspect that after reading Peggy Larson's book you will likely change your travel plans to include a personal visit to an American desert.

Book Description
Set in the picturesque landscape of the American southwest, the legendary jackalope comes alive in this appealing story of young Molly and a series of surprising and revealing adventures. Handicapped by only having one antler and ridiculed by the other jackalopes, Molly is aided through the intervention of the mysterious Grandal. Through him, she soon learns that the true source of strength is within. With that assurance and by using her own special gift, the little jackalope is able to touch the life of a lonely sheepherder and finds a mystical reward for herself in the experience.
The door to Molly's circle quickly widens to reveal her cousins, Priscilla and Abigail, the food-obsessed Jumbo, and an irrepressible magpie named Fraida. Enter also, Molly's newfound friendship with a ginkgo tree and a threat to its existence from some of Molly's friends.
A new test comes with Grandal's strange summons for assistance in aiding a trapped coyote, a fearful enemy of the jackalope clan. Adding to the danger on the mission is the proximity of the alluring, but deadly Matamor, an enchanting oasis. As the plot deepens, other jackalopes are drawn into the action, and Molly is increasingly confronted by her own doubts and fears. Driven by a sense of duty, but caught in the vortex of a powerful force at the end, she is swept to a startling revelation and conclusion.
Customer Reviews:
Great Book!.......2006-03-21
This is a delightful tale revolving around the legendary Jackalope in
the American southwest. I personally did not know what a jackalope was and if you do not either let me tell you. It is a mythical creature living in America's Southwest deserts. It is said to resemble a large jackrabbit with antelope like antlers. It is said that it sings and cowboys through the years have heard it during the long night watches of their herds. Interesting!
We meet Molly, a young sweet Jackalope who has only one antler. Because of this handicap she is often ridiculed by the others in her group but through a mysterious friend named Grandal, Molly learns the difference she can make in her world, as they take one adventure after another together.
We are also graced by meeting a really funny magpie named Fraida and a talking ginkgo tree along who will make an impact on Jackalope's future events.
One day Molly is in a situation where she must face her enemy the coyote and actually help to save his life, will she do it? And how will this one act set in motion a repaying of kindness? You will have to read this adorable story to find out.
I highly recommend this work; it is packed full of just the right amount of adventure, moral issues, true friendships and many lessons on just what is important in life.
A top of the notch read, one you and your child will enjoy sharing together. Excellent source of bedtime stories or just adventures to be shared anytime.
A contemporary Aesop.......2006-02-23
This is a set of stories or fables, focusing on a jackalope named "Molly." For those of you who might not know, a jackalope is a mythical creature of the America West's deserts, resembling a large jackrabbit, but with antelope-like antlers. The mythical jackalope also offers parents an opportunity todiscuss fiction versus reality with their children.
In the first story, "Song of the Jackalope," we meet Molly, who lost an antler when very young, following an unfortunate encounter with a cactus. Molly is growing into a sensitive, aware, thoughtful, and somewhat outcast jackalope, whose physical abilities are hampered by her impaired balance (having only one antler will do that). In this initial story, she meets Grandal, a very old and very wise jackrabbit, who befriends her. We also learn of the power of song in the lives of jackalopes.
In the next story, "Molly and the Ginkgo Tree," Molly makes a rather unusual friend, and issues of friendship and self-esteem versus vanity are neatly addressed.
In "An Unlikely Rescue," Molly learns how to look beyond her immediate situations, see others from their own viewpoint, and the meaning of altruism and charity.
In "The Crippled Coyote," we see Molly learn more about not making assumptions about others, and the concept of kharma or "what goes around, comes around."
"Many Years Later" is a brief, somewhat wistful, epilogue.
This collection of stories started as e-mailed stories from the author, Roy Campbell or "Baba Roy", to his granddaughter. They would make excellent bedtime stories for children 3 to 7, as well as read-along stories for children 5 to 7.
The stories are quaint, humorous, and clear, but subtle, in their lessons. They are well-written, and they leave you wanting more. I hope that Mr. Campbell will consider writing more jackalope stories, possibly featuring a young male jackalope, to connect better with boys learning to read.
I have mixed feelings about Grandal's occasional references to the Arthurian legend. They seem to be non-sequitirs, and cause minor interruptions to the flow of the reading experience. However, for some children, they might open the door of interest in the Arthur stories, and thus lead to further reading. For older children, David Clement-Davies' "Fire Bringer" might be a good book to follow "Song of the Jackalope."

Book Description
"Song of the Jackalope" draws on the image of a legendary animal whose history as a myth is not fully known. By one account, the first white man who claimed to see a jackalope was an old western trapper. As the legend grew, there were stories of cowboys hearing humanlike voices singing to them from lonely hillsides or prairies at night. The melodies, it was said, were those of the jackalope, a creature of remarkable vocal abilities and very fleet of foot. Now the legendary "critter" comes alive in an unusual book that is written as juvenile fiction, but offers adult appreciation as well. Its setting is in the picturesque landscape of the southwest; there are 76 hand drawn illustrations that bring the scenes and characters to life.
The story itself centers on a handicapped young jackalope named Molly who undergoes a series of surprising and revealing adventures. Possessed of a gifted singing voice, she is befriended by Grandal, a shadowy old jack rabbit of mystical origin. Other characters of interest enter the plot, and Molly finds herself increasingly challenged by unusual circumstances, moving to a finale which is unexpected but uplifting in emotion and spirit. Decidedly alegorical, there are some humorous episodes and character traits that most people will recognize. Fifth grade to adult.

Endearing book!.......2004-06-18
This is an endearing book. It presents many lessons to be learned and would be a wonderful book for any parent/guardian to share with his/her child. Molly is a gentle jackalope who shows respect and concern for other living things in her world. This book truly teaches kind lessons of humanity through its characters.
