Strong for the beginners.......2007-09-23
Long familiar with the Gotham Writer's Workshop, I expected more from this work, but passed it on to several others and they found it helpful. I believe its strength lies in the organization it brings to your outlining and writing, carrying over to all phases of work. If you're just kicking off the life-long desire to write and are not schooled formally in creative writing, I highly recommend this.
Excellent Guide.......2007-08-05
Of more than a dozen books on the craft of writing fiction I've read, this is the clearest introductory book. Edited by Alexander Steele, it comprises eleven chapters, each by a different writing teacher. At first, this raised my concern: so many voices. Not to worry -- the book has been superbly edited to hold together.
Alexander Steele, the author of the first chapter, engaged me right away with his amiable and highly informed voice. Subsequent chapters sustain this voice while presenting remarkably clear expositions of basic constitutive elements of fiction: character; plot; point of view; description; dialogue; setting and pacing; voice; theme; and revision. These chapters include numerous brief excerpts from outstanding contemporary writers such as Jane Smiley, Arundhati Roy, and Milan Kundera. Moreover, the book thoroughly analyzes a classic contemporary short story, Raymond Carver's "Cathedral." The story, in full, appears in the appendix. Also in the appendix is a 2-page "cheat sheet" highlighting the key points of the entire book. The concluding chapter, "The Business of Writing" offers many valuable tips.
Five star book.

Advice that summarize the art of writing fiction.......2007-05-06
This book helps me to remember the most important rules when writing a novel. It is described in a very pedagogic manner. Still it is very hard for me to understand how to use different perspectiv but I am on my way with what is written here. Anyhow the book is not for for advanced writer but is great for beginners and almost beginners.
well written with practical exercises.......2007-04-08
easy to follow with practical exercises. Good for the beginning writer looking to build confidence and practice in the art of building characters and stories

Piano pieces for Everyone!!.......2006-11-01
Very good for beginner who want to start playing piano. Favorite and famous songs for all time.
Fun to learn and play the music. Not only for children!
An old classic.......2006-03-06
I started my piano lessons about 20 odd years ago...this book was what I played for fun and didn't underestimate my "talent". Sadly I lost my original copy about 6 years ago, what a joy to finally get it back...untouched.
Brilliant book.......2003-07-18
I have the 1934 edition. The pieces are graded from 1 to grade 4 and the quality and range of the music is fantastic, fair better than the rubbish simplified versions nowadays.
Book Description
Everybody Loves Pizza is a celebration of America’s favorite dish — its history, its versatility, its staying power. It delves into where pizza came from, where it’s going, and what it means to American culture. Thanks to food writers, pizza insiders, and ordinary, pizza-loving Americans, it also reveals where to find 540 top-notch pizzas across the country, plus recipes from the familiar (Pepperoni or Barbecue Chicken Pizza) to the adventurous (Shrimp Pizza with Tasso Ham, Goat Cheese, and Spinach or Prosciutto Pear Pizza).

Yum.......2006-10-08
This book is a cross between a history book and recipe book. Although it doesn't have that many recipes it is very interesting, all the recipes are tasty and the pictures in this book are great. There is also a restaurant guide in the back.
Best in a crowded field.......2006-04-07
I'm not a pizzeria owner or a book reviewer, just a guy who loves pizza. It seems like there are a lot of books about pizza out there these days, but this one covers more ground and is more entertaining than the others. There's no New York snobbery going on here - just a clear-eyed, authoritative approach to all styles. This book gives equal time to Chicago, New Haven, California, NYC, and all the others.
And the photos make me hungry.
It's strong on the history of famous indies and pizza chains, and the recipes look good - and they throw in a lot of fun blurbs here and there to keep things moving along ("best pizza moments in movies," "ten great pizzeria names," even a funny sidebar on "Seinfeld"'s apparent obsession with pizza).
There's a top ten list of the best pizzerias in the country, and I can't say I totally agree - where's Zachary's in Oakland? - but I guess that's the point of these things. Besides, the directory of 500+ great pizzerias has all of my favorite local (and national) places.
If you buy one pizza book, make this the one.
This book makes a great gift . . ........2006-01-07
I gave this wonderful book as a gift for the holidays, and plan on giving it for housewarming and birthday gifts in the future. It is a fun read, and a sure crowd pleaser. Everyone can find something in this book to like - the recipes for someone who loves to cook, the pizza restaurant listings for your favorite traveler (there is a restaurant in every state!), and the history of pizza for the non-fiction readers. It has wonderful photographs and illustrations, and will make you want to order pizza for dinner.
Fun-facts and mouth-watering kitchen ideas for pizza aficionados everywhere.......2005-11-06
Beautifully illustrated with color photography throughout, Everybody Loves Pizza is part cookbook, part restaurant guide, and part trivia fun book all about the delicious and popular food of pizza! Chapters look at the origin of pizza in Italy and its evolution in American culture, featuring recipes from expert chefs, from Barbecue Chicken Pizza to Prosciutto Pear Pizza, Rosemary Red Onion Pizza, and much more. A directory of 500 top-notch pizzerias in the United States fills out the best locations for traveling gourmets to visit rounds out this "must-have" book of fun-facts and mouth-watering kitchen ideas for pizza aficionados everywhere.
superb compilation of pizza knowledge, will make a great gift.......2005-10-06
Everybody loves pizza is a real pleasure -- it takes a light-hearted but thorough approach to pizza, with plenty of history, restaurant reviews, stories of pizza personalities, and recipies. Will make a great gift for all the pizza lovers among us.

Three scoops, please: a travel book, a cookbook and a pop culture history all in one, Everybody Loves Ice Cream is the most complete treatment of the subject a reader can find anywhere. Whether you're looking for a great ice cream stand nearby, a recipe for rocky road, or an explanation for what makes an ice cream "super-premium," you'll find it here. It's true that everybody loves ice cream, and this book tells you why.
Customer Reviews:
A real treat of a book!.......2005-10-12
So far, this book has garnered only five-star reviews, and I absolutely agree with all the raves the other reviewers have given this book. I bought it for a research project along with quite a number of other food history books, and this is probably the best of the lot. It's more than history and facts - yes, it teaches you more than you ever wanted to know about ice cream, but it's fun and entertaining at the same time. The pictures and graphics are fantastic, and make the whole reading experience extremely enjoyable. The book is crammed full of the most interesting facts from what must be hundreds of different sources (for example: Did you know that your favorite flavor may indicate what your personality is like? Or did you know that there is a portable non-electric ice cream maker that makes ice cream after being attached to any moving object or person for forty minutes?)There is also a complete history of ice cream, ice cream recipes, reviews of top ice cream shops, and much, much more. Plus, if you haven't had enough at that point, there's even a bibliography in the back for you to find even more information about ice cream.
My only complaint about this book is that it gave me VERY intense cravings for ice cream - not good for my diet!!!
Everything you've always wanted to know about Ice Cream.......2004-09-14
This is by far the most complete book about ice cream I've ever seen. It's ideal for both adults and kids with fun facts. For example, here's one of the entertaining Did You Know? entries: "In Newark, New Jersey, it is illegal to eat ice cream after 6 P.M. without a doctor's note." The ice cream making tips and recipes make it a wonderful resource for an activity the whole family can enjoy at home or you can visit top ice cream parlors in the U.S. Check out the state-by-state listings included in "Everyone Loves Ice Cream." You'll happily refer to it again and again.
You just can't put it down........2004-07-23
I opened this book with a few free minutes while sitting on my front porch and was still looking at it long after my family was asleep. It's good clean fun. It's so much more than a tribute to ice cream, I swear I couldn't stand it any more and tip-toed downstairs to see if I had peanuts to make a "tin roof" before picking it back up again. The first thing I'm going to do is have great family fun by letting my kids make "Coffee Can Ice Cream". This book brought back such great childhood memories of cranking the old rock salt & ice machine we had all those years ago. In addition to the great text in the book, the graphics and photos put you back in another place and time. I almost feel like taking that trip down old Route 66 after looking at it.
This book will not get stuffed into my crowded bookshelf - it's going to be a great, often-reached-for, home decoration for my kitchen island from this summer forward!
A tasty treat for the ice cream lover in you.......2004-07-20
This book is the most comprehensive guide to ice cream. It's a history lesson, travel guide and recipe book all scooped together deliciously! I found the writing fun and engaging. Arnold brings ice cream to life in a way that had me wanting to chant "Ice cream! Ice cream! We all scream for ice cream!" Makes a great gift along with a pint of a favorite flavor. Highly recommended.
Ice Cream Lovers Look No Further!.......2004-07-20
This book has it all! It's a recipe book, a travel guide, a history manual, and a fun filled fact finder for every ice cream. Easy to read and fun to flip through. Don't miss "Flavors Worth Finding," "Get Sauced," and "Phosphates Preserved: Great Ice Cream and Soda Fountain Museums." I don't know how I survived so long without this guide to my favorite food! Note to My Relatives: Expect to receive this book for all holidays in the upcoming year!

Great for beginners.......2005-07-03
I purchased this book for my son. He really is having fun with his keyboard and likes the songs in this book. He is working on getting me to try to play also...maybe. I have purchased a few books by this author and my son has liked each one because they are written so he can understand them.
Great book for kids of all ages.......2001-12-05
I picked up this book because I considered myself a kid, at least in the realm of being a music beginner. It has a great progression from overly easy to reasonably challenging. I ordered a second one for my girlfriend's kids so that I could have mine to myself. Also, the keyboard/note chart on the last page is a great help.

Good straightforward recipes.......2006-12-10
Shrimp is the most popular seafood in the U.S., next to canned tuna fish. Yet most of us have a limited repertoire in cooking it. This modest cookbook, written by the always-reliable Rick Rodgers, is a collection of recipes that you really will make... or, at least, I certainly do.
It's separated into appetizers, salads, shrimp from a pot, shrimp from the skillet, shrimp with pasta or rice, shrimp from the grill, shrimp from the oven. Most of the recipes are very fast to put together -- thanks to the fast cooking time of the main ingredient -- and they're pretty darned simple. That doesn't keep them from being good eats for an ordinary weeknight dinner. I've had very good luck with Moroccan-spiced shrimp on fruited couscous; with corn, shrimp, and feta salad with chili-lime vinaigrette; and coconut shrimp with easy peanut sauce. All of which are very fast to make, require no weird ingredients, and generated no leftovers.
Several "one ingredient" cookbooks have 40-50 good recipes and then a lot of filler. I haven't found that to be true with Simply Shrimp, though admittedly many of the recipes haven't appealed to me enough to pull out the skillet. The overview gives a lot of good tips about choosing shrimp by size, and many recipes encourage you to create a stock from the shrimp shells. (It works so well that I've learned to save the shells in the freezer to create a big batch all-at-once.)
Very nice book. It won't blow you away, but you'll reach for it often.
Quick Recipes for Favorite Seafood.......2001-06-24
Flash-frozen shrimp is a staple in my freezer pantry because I can use it for a fast family meal or for a snack for drop-in guests. I wanted to try some new recipes, so I bought "Simply Shrimp" by Rick Rodgers. This high quality paperback combines the basics, such as choosing shrimp by type (warmwater, coldwater, freshwater, wild-caught, farm-raised, fresh, frozen), by size (cocktail pinks to super-colossal), and preparation (peeling, deveining, and brining), with simple recipes for shrimp stock and cooked shrimp. I discovered that this favorite seafood is not only low in fat, but, according to the cited recent Rockefeller University study, shrimp is also a heart-smart food because eating it increases the good HDL cholesterol, with no increase in the bad LDL cholesterol. This study's shrimp diet also showed lowered triglyceride levels.
So far, I like these recipes: "Scandinavian Vodka-Soused Shrimp"; "Grilled Shrimp Caesar Salad"; "Sichuan Shrimp with Cashews"; "Buttermilk Biscuits with Low Country Shrimp and Ham"; "Shrimp Diane"; "Grilled Shrimp a la Plancha with Romesco Sauce"; "Shrimp Peacemaker Sandwich." As well, the "Shrimp on Pasta and Rice" recipes I have tried are quite good. The section on grilling shrimp has seven marinade recipes. Also included are recipes for Shrimp Boil Spices and Chesapeake Bay Seasoning. The strength of this shrimp cookbook is the entrées, which are easy-to-make and delicious. However, I wish there were more appetizer and salad recipes, along with more color pictures. "Simply Shrimp" is a good cookbook for taking along on a trip or vacation where cooking will be involved.
Mouthwatering recipes in a beautifully compiled cookbook.......1999-01-07
I recieved this cookbook as a gift for Christmas and I know already that it's going to be one of my favourites. All of the recipes sound delicious and most use ingredients that you're likely to have on hand. The Spanish Shrimp with Red Peppers and Garlic sauce was superb as well as fast and easy to make. We're going to try at one recipe a week from this gem of a book!
Great recipes, Handsome book, good gift.......1998-09-03
This is an attractive book with mouth-watering recipes for shrimp-lovers of all types. It will certainly give you many menu ideas, from New Orleans Shrimp Ramoulade, to oriental coconut shrimp, to the elegant "Martini Shrimp Cocktail" pictured on the cover. I have enjoyed my copy so much that I have bought additional copies as gifts. Enjoy! Bon Apetit!
