I'm going to Southeast Asia next month. I wasn't quite sure how to pack, so I consulted various travel guides: Lonely Planet, Moon, Insight Guides, etc. Open Road's Thailand Guide was the only one to give me detailed, practical informatin on what to bring.

3 out of 5 stars Generally Good, but sometimes messes up some of the details.......2005-08-24

My fiance and I recently spent a couple of months touring Thailand with this book in tow. For the most part the book served its purpose. However, there were times when the book was unnecessarily frustrating.

For example, those cities in which no map is provided, the descriptions of the cities are virtually worthless for navigating. In more than a few cases, restaurants or accomodations listed in text are not included with the corresponding map. We often got the impression that first-hand research was not done for some of the activities or accomodations - mostly for southern Thailand. For example, a describedly tedious 1-hr "rocky jungle" walk from Ko Phi Phi's Thon Sai Village to Long Beach actually takes about 10-15 minutes, mostly on a fairly wide dirt road. This leads me to believe the researcher took the word of a longtail boat driver, looking to sell a fare, instead of doing the needed first-hand research. More commonly, it became apparent that rather inconsistent reviews of accomodations were likely done either superficially or lifted from previous versions of this book.

Overall, the book is better than Lonely Planet for budget travelers (which is too broad). LG does lack in background information concerning many of the sites. However, it is a pretty good guide about how to travel around and where to stay. Some of the side trips are nice (Wat Phutok in Northern Thailand is a must if in the neighborhood). Even when there are times when a little more attention to detail, consistency in reviews, and correspondence between maps and text would have been appreciated. This book will generally get you to the right parts of town, in the right part of the country, for about the right price, and with a decent map for many towns. Where it can be frustrating, well, mai pen rai.

4 out of 5 stars Not as good as other Let's Go books.......2005-08-20

I have traveled to over 25 countries and Let's Go has been my guidebook of choice for nearly all of them. It gives a lot of information without being too comprehensive.

I have been living in Thailand for 6 months now and have referenced this often. Its descriptions are right on the money. It gives you all the pertinent information that you will need. The places it recommends are accurate to their description.

THe only thing I wish this would list is the Thai script for the places it recommends. You will pronounce everything wrong because it is written in English the way a Thai person would read it and not the way a native English speaker would.

I can speak Thai and try to say where I want to go according to the spelling in this book and the people have no idea where I want to go. I have to rethink how Thai people would read the English and try pronouncing it that way. I can't imagine how difficult it would be to travel with this if I didn't speak Thai.

5 out of 5 stars Best Thailand budget Guide you'll EVER read!!.......2005-05-19

I found this guide to be fantastic!!

I have just returned from a two month trip to Thailand and would have found it much harder without this book! Every place you would think to visit (and a lot you wouldn't!) are in this book.

Where this book differs though is that it isn't afraid to drop a few opinions. I found that while travelling you havn't got time to go everywhere and find everything out for yourself so it's nice to have an opinion to consult. Lonley planet tends to tell you where you can go and stay but doesn't give you much infomation to base your decision on. I had this book and a lonley planet at one point and quickly sold the lonely planet.
There are some vital pieces of information for Thailand that just aren't in the lonely planet, for instance if you wish to extend you visa by crossing a border (the cheapest way!)Let's go tells you how to do this and what you'll need for every available border crossing, information just not in the Lonely planet.

This book realy centres on the budget concious, with prices for rooms and typical meals included. Although there are a few mentioned, if you want to stay in more upmarket places, buy a different book!!

The maps in the book could do with improving, however I didn't find this to be a major problem.

I don't normally write reviews for books I buy, but I was so impressed with this book that I felt I had to. An excellent budget guide, and with a number of interesting articles, actually a good read!! Buy it if you're thinking of going to Thailand.

      1 out of 5 stars Shallow.......2005-03-15

This is a book clearly oriented to the backpacker, but so much so that it neglects more peripheral areas or upscale areas that a backpacker may occasionally be interested in. Its attention to nightlife, one of the more enjoyable aspects of Thailand, is dismal. There is a political correctness strewn througout the book, to the point of completely omitting major locales and activities, that is distressing. Thailand is not a politically correct country by any stretch of the imagination, but it is what it is, and as such is one of the most fascinating and enjoyable places on earth. The Moon Handbook, Lonely Planet and Footprint are far more complete and helpful.

4 out of 5 stars This is the #1 guidebook for those on a super tight budget........2005-02-23

Let's Go is the budget back-packers handbook. Of the three guidebooks I have just reviewed on Thailand (Lonely Planet, Rough Guide), I found that Let's Go excels at helping you find the best of the "cheap" restaurants, and bargain basement hostels and hovels (occasionally hotels). Also, if you are considering camping in Thailand then this guide excels in this category.

Extremely impressive is the section titled "Alternatives to Tourism" where scores of NGO (non government organizations) are listed. Of the three guidebooks Let's Go has the best source for volunteering in Thailand. Conservation organizations, medical organizations, urban and rural development organizations are all listed. If you want to study in Thailand this guide has many school listings. Also, its history section is succinct and stellar.

Where the guide runs third is in the quality and quantity of maps, it has fewer accommodations and restaurants recommended, and its description of sights that you will be seeing is cursory.. For example the famous, must see, Bangkok Wat Phra Kaew (Temple of the Emerald Buddha) and the Grand Palace received only 3 paragraphs in this guide, Rough Guide gives you five pages of description. Extremely tacky are the ads found in the guide that promote everything from clothing to guesthouses. Bad.

If you are strapped for cash and going to travel Thailand on the `cheep' then this guide along with "Travels' Tales Thailand' (see my review) should be in your knapsack. Recommended 3.5 stars

Or worse -- what if her father embarrasses her in front of Stan? Jane has finally met the boy of her dreams. Is she ready for him?

        Customer Reviews:

        5 out of 5 stars "Today I'm Going to Meet A Boy.".......2007-03-31

Jane Purdy is a fifteen-year-old girl live in a fifteen year old world where the coolest girls are the ones wearing cashmere sweaters with blonde hair and tan skin. Jane Purdy wants luck to be on her side and...it gets on her side right away. She meets Stan Crandall. He's the perfect guy! He's even tall enough for her to wear high heels around him!Yet Jane is nervous...is she ready for Stan Crandall?

I think every girl can relate in some way to this book. It's a great read, filled with romance. So do yourself a favor and pick it up!

        4 out of 5 stars Boy Crazy.......2007-03-05

This story is and older time story about a girl named Jane Purdy. She is a girl who isn't noticed all the time and spends most of her time babysitting. One day when she is babysitting a little naughty girl who is going to dump ink on the white rug runs into the Doggie Diner deliverer who is totally cute. Later he calls her and they start dating. When the school dance comes he says he is going with someone else and she is devastated. Is Stan like someone else? Read this book to find out what happens.

        3 out of 5 stars a very girly story.......2005-03-01

Jane Purdy is a girl who really just isn't noticed like Marcy Strokes, who is known by all. While Marcy is going around with boys in converertibles, Jane is babysitting. Jane dreams of the day when she has a boy to take her to dances and the movies. One who is not too short to let Jane wear highheels and is old enough to drive.
That day feels like it will never come, but it does sooner than she thinks.

One day, Jane was at her wits end while is babysitting a little girl who was about to spill a bottle of permant ink on a white designer rug. Totally unexpected, the boy of Jane's dreams walks through the door. Through finding a boy Jane finds herself.

The dating style of a 15 yr. old in the 1950's is very different from dating today. This is a incredibly clean romance for preteens. But like most of Cleary's work there are dull and boring parts which want to make you put the book down. I would recommend this book if you like a very girly story.

4 out of 5 stars What its like to be 15??!??.......2005-03-01

First off, let me tell you that I really liked this book. It was a little old fashion because it was writen in the 1950's, but it still had the same meaning.

Anyway, this book is about a girl, Jane, and her wanting to meet a boy very much. She keeps telling herself that she will meet this hansome boy thats around 16 and, they will fall madly in love. Well, it does happen for her, but just not in that order. She meets a boy while baby-siting for a little girl. They start to go out, but then he doean't ask her to the first high school dance. She is very hurt, but then he tells her its just one big mistake. Its really just about a girl going through her teenage years.

Overall, I really enjoyed this book. Great work from Beverly Cleary!!! Two thumbs up!! Read this book!!!

        5 out of 5 stars excellent!.......2004-09-12

This book is one of my favorite books in the whole world! The plot, story, and characters are great even though this book was written a long time ago! So what are you doing reading mine and everyone else's reviews when you could be ordering and enjoying this great book? Hurry up and buy this book NOW before anyone else buys it and all the great deals are gone!!!

        Book Description

Catherine Cookson was one of the world's most beloved writers. Her books have sold millions of copies, and her characters and their stories have captured the imaginations of readers around the globe. Now, available for the first time in this country, comes one of Cookson's earliest and most stirring historical romances: The Fifteen Streets.

John O'Brien lives in a world where surviving is a continual struggle. He works long hours at the docks to help support his parents' large family. Many other families in the Fifteen Streets have already given up and descended into a dismal state of grinding poverty, but the O'Briens continue to strive for a world they are only rarely allowed to glimpse.

Then John O'Brien meets Mary Llewellyn, a beautiful young teacher who belongs to that other world. What begins as a casual conversation over tea quickly blossoms into a rare love that should have been perfect. Fate steps in, however, when John is accused of fathering the child of a local girl, and Mary's parents forbid her to see him. The couple begins to realize that the gulf of the Fifteen Streets between them is a chasm they could never bridge-or might they still find a way?

In these pages Catherine Cookson displays the irresistible plotting, scene-setting, and characterization that have made her a recognized master of historical and romance fiction. Fans of her novels, with their larger themes of romantic love and class conflict, will be delighted to find that even at the beginning of her illustrious career, Cookson had the power to captivate audiences. Filled with passion and compelling drama, The Fifteen Streets is a rare treat for lovers of romantic fiction.

THE FIFTEEN STREETS are slums filled with abject poverty that usually leads to its residents giving up on the future as the hard work destroys the dreams and hopes for something better if not for themselves at least for their offsprings. A drunk sired John O'Brien, yet the lad once believed that hard work was the avenue out. However, his toil on the docks has left him with deep doubts and the realization that the odds are he will end up just like his dad.

Upon meets his younger sister's teacher Mary Llewellyn, John renews his belief he will make something of himself because now he has the impetus to become a better person. Mary comes from a higher class than John yet prefers working with the children of the FIFTEEN STREETS in the belief that education is the ticket out of destitution. As John and Mary fall in love, the pressure increases to end this forbidden relationship that binds two people from opposite sides of the tracks.

Although the class differences blocking a relationship seem antiquated, this reprint of a classic Catherine Cookson book stands the test of time due to the ageless themes that survival and intelligence is inadequate without love, passion, and hope. The descriptions of the FIFTEEN STREETS neighborhood are sadly realistically horrifying then and now yet brilliantly interwoven into a powerful plot. Fans will admire Mary and root for John to overcome the impossible, which is why the deceased Ms. Cookson remains a favorite.

I read this book years ago... about 17 years ago in fact, but I still remember it as one of the funniest books I have ever read.

The part where Kobie crashes the car into the garbage cans was so comically written it made me laugh out loud and I still smile when I think of it today.

It is a very good and entertaining book.

        5 out of 5 stars Kobie's at it again..........2003-06-07

The last entry in Ransom's fantastic Kobie series. (Ransom was once quoted as saying her brain stops at 15 and that she is a grown-up by default.) Here Kobie suffers tonsilitis, embarrases herself in fromt of a cute teacher, has to deal with the likes of Sandy Robertson and an unlikely new crush. For the initiated, you know how good this series is. For the unititated, boy do I envy you for getting to read this for the first time.

        5 out of 5 stars 15 Reasons.......2006-06-03

My husband is deployed and we have a 4 year old son who is just learing to write his letters. This is the perfect gift for Dad for Father's Day! Can't wait to hear how much he enjoys it!

1 out of 5 stars Cant get it shipped.......2006-03-03

I would like to review this from an owners perspective, but I ordered it 4 months ago and have as yet not had it shipped. Once a month, I get an email saying the ship date has been extended yet another month. Sadly I was going to send this to my husband in Iraq for Christmas.

1 out of 5 stars Not as good as it seems.......2005-12-06

I bought this book for my 4 and 2 year old sons to fill out for father's day. I must say the concept of the book is great but...the pages are laminated in such a way that crayons don't color and child safe markers smear. Also, my children and I found many of the illustrations creepy and disturbing. I was ask several times "Mom what are they doing in that picture?"
You could make a nicer book yourself from scratch.

5 out of 5 stars Fabulous for adults too!.......2004-02-10

My adult sister, brothers, and I completed this book for my father for his birthday. We added family pictures and notes he had written to us through the years. A wonderful way to show your father how much he means to you.

        5 out of 5 stars What a wonderful gift for a dad.......2002-02-16

15 Reasons I Love My Dad may appear to be for small children but it is a book that people of all ages will enjoy filling out. I know because my teenage sister completed the book for our dad and he loved it. The book gets your creative thoughts flowing with fill-in-the-blank sentences like "I love my dad because he can ________" and "I love my dad because he is the best _______." The illustrations are attractive and fun and there are many pages in the book for the "co-author" to draw pictures or add photos of them and their dad. My dad smiled as he read through the book, laughed a few times and even got teary-eyed on one page. Parents love gifts that are created by their children and that's just what this book is. Once finished, each book is unique and personalized for the special dad in someone's life. What I want to know is when the book for MOM will be ready!

            Book Description

Mia thinks boys are immature. They only talk about cars and sports. They only think about sex.

Will has no idea what girls talk about. He wishes he were a fly on the wall. He wishes he had a tape recorder and a hidden microphone ....

Fifteen Love is a funny up-and-down story about a boy and a girl, a viola and a tennis racquet; about family and friends, flirting and true love.

4 out of 5 stars Corbet's Second Serve is an Ace.......2005-12-11

Robert Corbet's first serve into the literature world Passenger Seat, lets face it was pretty average, and that's being nice. He didn't give up though and has picked up the ball and continued his career match and hasn't just written a book that is good with his second literary serve but is in fact an ace. For those of us who have also read his third book Shelf Life we know that he now knows how to hit the writing ball properly and that Fifteen Love wasn't just a fluke.

Fifteen Love is the story of two fifteen year olds who have noticed each other at school but have either been too afraid to approach the other or don't want to upset their social standing. It is cleverly written in a style that jumps between the narrative of Mia and Will for each paragraph in the same style spectators near the net in a tennis match have to keep switching their vision back and forth between the two ends of the court to where the action is. A very entertaining light read.

3 out of 5 stars Light contemporary romance.......2005-11-27

Corbet serves up a light contemporary romance that focuses on the difference between guys and girls, only to discover they have common insecurities. Mia Foley, a quiet and pretty violist, begins falling for tennis player Will Holland just as he is starting to fall for her. Narrative volleys from Will to Mia as they move from superficial stereotypes to distinct personalities.
There humor plus romance style may appeal to fans of Sonya Sones and Ron Koertge, although the writing and themes are not as mature.

            5 out of 5 stars Fifteen Love.......2004-07-27

Will and Mia make more mistakes on their path toward love than Shakespeare characters. FIFTEEN LOVE will drive readers crazy with its near misses and crossed signals. There is even friend and family interference to keep the two main characters apart.

FIFTEEN LOVE provides a good picture of a boy's point of view about crushes and dating, even if the girl's side is less interesting. The book flip-flops between the two points of view, making them seem even further apart. Author Robert Corbet has a great male character in Will --- believable, vulnerable, human. But Mia is less likable. She does not seem like a three-dimensional girl with deep feelings. For example, Mia learns that her father is unfaithful. She commits an act of vandalism in retaliation, but the effect is muted.

Sometimes minor characters steal the stage. At times, Will's brother Dave is more interesting than the two main characters. Dave becomes a paraplegic after hitting his head on the bottom of a swimming pool four years ago, at age 9. He and Will battle over things Will can do that Dave wants to do. Dave gets jealous over Will's social life and gets involved in the drama over Mia. There is no easy solution to this problem, and readers will care about how the two brothers sort through their relationship.

Social misunderstandings happen to everyone, especially in high school. Readers may care enough about some characters to stick it out to the end through this tangled story, but it's a bumpy ride.

5 out of 5 stars An amazing book.......2003-10-23

"Fifteen Love," by Robert Corbet was a great book. I enjoyed every thing that was in it, from the tearful tragedies to the jokes and the comedy. Once I started to read it, I couldn't put it down. The way Corbet blends humor with sadness, confusion with sanity is just remarkable. This is a story of two teenagers who like each other, but are confused and hurt by the world around them, and don't feel ready for many things yet.
As the book starts, it gives Mia's and Will's thoughts, formed like a diary. The reader can feel the heaviness of the troubles in their families. Mia's dad is having an affair and she doesn't want anybody to find out. Will's brother is in a wheelchair, and his parents are pressuring Will to become a tennis star. Mia's friends are the two most popular girls in school and yet she is so different from them. Will is lonely and confused with his life.
Later, Will invites Mia to a tennis match where he will be playing, just as friends, but he hopes for something more. Mia doesn't feel ready for a boyfriend, but she does like WIll, and is not sure of herself. She arrives, but has forgotten her glasses and can't see that he is on the tennis court, so she is annoyed and thought that he stood her up. She goes home, but on the way, she sprains her ankle. The next morning at school it's announced that Will has won his state championship tennis match and is a tennis star. He becomes popular and Mia thinks he is immature and shallow like all the other boys.
After many run-ins with each other, they stop talking to each other for a while, and Mia's friend, Vanessa goes after Will. Since she's popular and he wants to get Mia jealous, Will and Vanessa go to a party together. Mia goes too, and sees them together. She is very depressed and sad. Later, Mia and Will run into each other outside of school, and finally have a long talk.
It is a remarkable book and touches the heart of anyone who has experienced those things, and most have. I recommend it to anyone who is confused, needs to relive moments of his or her coming of age, or anyone who needs a good book.
