MidwestReview of Traveler's Handbook on Tipping.......2002-02-02
Poorly written. What little information there is has no significant value.
Only conceivable use would be as a reference/journal for an 8 year old when planning a trip.
Would be 0 stars, if it could be.......2000-07-07
Totally worthless. This book is mainly blank pages. What content is there is thin and uninformative.
Little Content--Lots of Filler.......2000-04-19
Only 5 of the 43 pages contained actual tipping information. 20 pages were Tipping Record forms. Another 6-8 pages listed the 15% tip chart. Another 10 pages or so listed each state's Chamber of Commerce info. This book was totally bogus ()

Book Description
Quantum mechanics, which describes the behavior of subatomic particles, seems to challenge common sense. Waves behave like particles; particles behave like waves. You can tell where a particle is, but not how fast it is moving--or vice versa. An electron faced with two tiny holes will travel through both at the same time, rather than one or the other. And then there is the enigma of creation ex nihilo, in which small particles appear with their so-called antiparticles, only to disappear the next instant in a tiny puff of energy. Since its inception, physicists and philosophers have struggled to work out the meaning of quantum mechanics. Some, like Niels Bohr, have responded to quantum mechanics' mysteries by replacing notions of position and velocity with probabilities. Others, like Einstein and Penrose, have disagreed and think that the entire puzzle reflects not a fundamental principle of nature but our own ignorance of basic scientific processes.
Sneaking a Look at God's Cards offers the general reader a deep and real understanding of the problems inherent to the interpretation of quantum mechanics, from its inception to the present. The book presents a balanced overview of current debates and explores how the theory of quantum mechanics plays itself out in the real world. Written from the perspective of a leading European physicist, it looks extensively at ideas from both sides of the Atlantic and also considers what philosophers have contributed to the scientific discussion of this field. Sneaking a Look at God's Cards sets out what we know about the endlessly fascinating quantum world, how we came to this understanding, where we disagree, and where we are heading in our quest to comprehend the seemingly incomprehensible.
Customer Reviews:
Best book on qm for general audience.......2004-04-24
This is the best book I've seen on quantum mechanics. It's probably too hard to follow without some scientific experience on the part of the reader. But it is the only book I know of (and I'm aware of most) that really covers the conceptual issues of the entire subject in an open-minded non-romantic, non-mystical and realistic way. Very refreshing. A gem.

Book Description
Alexandra Pelosi, creator of the Emmy award-winning film Journeys with George and of Diary of a Political Tourist, makes her literary debut with an intimate look at the frenzied and grueling underbelly of presidential campaigning and the puppet role of the media. Pelosi went along on the campaign trail in order to, as she puts it, "document the absurd hazing rituals that our presidential candidates have to go through." With this savvy, well-connected, and fearless guide, it's a rollicking, breakneck journey unlike any other.
Pelosi's one-on-one time with the 2004 presidential candidates affords an up-close perspective on the highs and lows of campaign life: the genuine thrill of seeing America, the unrelenting grind of endless campaign stops, the hope and heartache of poll results. While the candidates try to stick to tightly constructed scripts, Pelosi's nonnetwork angle makes for revealing portraits of the men who wanted to be president.
But even more, Pelosi's approach reveals fundamental flaws in the media's election coverage. A former member of the campaign press corps, she turns her gimlet eye on the media, which are busy enacting their own election-time rituals: "Every election cycle journalists defy the theory of evolution, living sequestered on a bus, with no sleep, few showers, and tons of junk food, going town-to-town listening to the same speech over and over. You're stuck in this dysfunctional relationship between the news organization that has you there to do their bidding and the campaign that is trying to co-opt you."
And herein lies Pelosi's driving point: politicians and journalists don't trust each other, and so, in election coverage and in politics in general, the press is utterly hamstrung. Since the candidates never say anything unscripted and the journalists have to make nice in order to maintain access, modern presidential campaigns have become little more than media events. Politicians and journalists alike are going through the motions, and the voters have no idea who the candidates really are.
But Pelosi says the public are not fools: "Everyone knows that the media do not give them an accurate portrait of a person." No wonder people are apathetic. But whose fault is it? Are the candidates driving people away from the political process, or are the media keeping them out?
Probing, insightful, and lively, Sneaking into the Flying Circus exposes the election process for what it is: a three-ring gala production that comes to town every four years. As a nation and an audience, we're often willing to suspend disbelief -- and we often can't resist when the clowns try to get us in on the act. It is, after all, the greatest show on earth.

John Brodigan for a Better America
"In politics, you have to remember that it isn't what is actually happening - it's the perception that's out there." - George H.W. Bush
Voters don't trust the candidates because they are phonies who are never honest. Candidates can't be 100% honest, because if they slip up the press will be all over them. The press will be all over them because the only thing voters seem to care about is the trivial nonsense they claim turns them off of politics.
It's a never-ending cycle that Alexandria Pelosi tried to get to the bottom to in her book Sneaking into the Flying Circus - How the Media Turn our Presidential Campaigns into Freak Shows. Honestly, she didn't really get to the bottom of anything, other than the fact that the process is all stoogats. The journey on the other hand, was a very entertaining and informative one to read.
One thing I found really interesting was I never realized how much of a "deck of cards" Howard Dean's campaign was. This book made it sound like most of his success was a media creation, because none of the other candidates were giving them anything exciting to write about. They saw crazy ol' Howard and his crazy ol' supporters, and thought, "we can sell this."
And I admit it, I fell for the hype. I admired the way he was running a "different" campaign and that he wasn't afraid to speak his mind. What I didn't realize at the time was that most of his minions were the same strain of Internet dork that I hated dealing with when I was editing the wrestling magazine. Gov. Dean turned out to be just another wack job claiming his "being a Washington outsider" qualified him for the Presidency. In the immortal words of one Bugs Bunny, "What a maroon."
They also, apparently, created Sen. Kerry's resurgence once they were bored of Crazy Howard. He was barely breathing until right before the Iowa Caucus, when one paper decided to write and article calling Kerry "The Comeback Kid." Then everyone decided to do the same, because they didn't want to miss out if he actually happened to win. Once the papers started calling Kerry the front-runner, the voters figured that he must be the front-runner so they all voted for him in Iowa. Then New Hampshire figured, "eh, I guess since everyone else is doing it." All this, just because one paper decides to write one article, and the rest of the media are a bunch of copycats. As far has his campaign went, you could almost hear the author asking herself, "Is this really the best we can come up with?"
Back to the campaign coverage and the most telling sign that the way we do things is dumb? There's a chapter focusing on an argument Ms. Pelosi had with her little niece and nephew about why she wasn't allowed in the John Kerry fundraiser. This was easily my favourite part of the book and worth the cost of admission alone. I won't spoil it here, other than to say the argument ended when the author ran out of answers and they all decided to look for a cookie.
Other highlights in the book include "The Top 10 Things You're Not Allowed to Say on a Presidential Campaign," "Top The Lessons Learned," a chapter on the protesters in NYC, and a list of off the record comments from the press corps.
The candidates are already starting to identify themselves and the real free for all starts right after the midterm elections in 2006. Will 2008 be a remake of 2004, where the actors are different but the story remains the same? Like I mentioned before, the book didn't offer a solution. It did however analyze the problem. The trick now is to do something aboot it.
Amusing, Intelligent and Honest .......2005-06-02
Alexandra Pelosi, best known as the filmmaker behind "Journeys with George", has written a very entertaining and absorbing account of her time on the Democratic Primary trail. I strongly recommend it to anyone interested in the media, politics and the intersection between the two.
A book like this certainly has the potential to be heavy trudge - "a book that's good for you" - but Pelosi manages to write about important things without falling into the trap of self-importance.
I found Pelosi's writing crisp, and her wit and eye for detail as sharp as in her work on video. This time around though, there's been an obvious seasoning in her perspective - she's literally seen it all before. Her ability to compare her experiences with Bush in 2000 vs. the Democrats in 2004 makes her a great "traveling companion", and guide to the ways of the campaign trail.
When the next Presidential primaries roll around, I'll be sure to read this one again.
About The Mainstream Media's Coverage Of Campaigns.......2005-05-15
This book is about how presidential campaigns are covered from the perspective of one reporter sitting on the bus. This is an inside the bus look at the campaigns. The book, I believe, achieves it purpose of exposing what goes on in presidential campaigns. It is not a pretty picture. In fact, it is a very ugly picture of sound bites, scripting, fatigue, painted on smiles and even boredom. Most Americans have not been to a presidential campaign rally and probably would find them very distasteful. The way a candidate wins the race is to say very little and to say the same thing day after day with a smile painted on his/her face. A real candidate such as Howard Dean who speaks more than just a script will lose. Our democratic system is not bringing us the best people to be our president because the truth is too elusive and too easily distorted.
Part of the "media".......2005-05-10
Unfortunately, this book is just part of the "media" that is its subject. Take a look at the index before you buy it, and look at what it covers; you'll notice that it's quite similar to the way the "media" covered the 2004 elections.
For example, this book continues the media blackout on Ohio Rep. Dennis Kucinich, who finished second in the Democratic primaries but still failed to gather mainsteam "media" coverage.
If you're looking to read more about the Dean Scream and everything else that the media has already covered, this is the book for you. The book also contains a lot of interesting anecdotes and experiences, but again, it's nothing revolutionary or independent from the "media".

Customer Reviews:
"Sneaking In" is lacking realism.......2006-02-08
The storyline was excellent, and had all of the elements involved to make a great book: drama, humor, and suspense. In all, this book made for an excellent suspense builder for the subsequent books (#43, #44, #45, #46, #47) giving it a high rating. However, the "practicality" of the Clay DiPalma story left some major flaws which prevented it from a perfect score:
Issue 1: When Isabella had her accident and Nick and Dub were taking statements as to what happened, they found out a number of things: (a) Isabella was near Clay DiPalma, a man who Nick Fox, a professional undercover narcotics detective, could profile as a very suspicious, shifty character; (b) Jessica said she saw Isabella talking and fighting with Danny before she went off and started dancing with DiPalma;(c) both Jessica and Lila both stated that they saw Isabella with DiPalma smoking a "cigarette" (which Jessica then stated Isabella didn't smoke) then began acting incoherent before she started running away from both of them in a dazzed and confused mood; (d) DiPalma left the scene before police officials and paramedics arrived on scene to find out what happened. What does all of this add up to? Reasonable suspicion. Though the book states that all the police need is probable cause to get DiPalma (an eyewitness to where Isabella got the cigarette--namely Danny since he was actually watching her with DiPalma and taking the cigarette from him). All the police would have needed from Danny was a sworn signed statement (an affidavit) that he saw Isabella take the cigarette from DiPalma and smoke it. After which, the police could obtain enough info (probable cause) for an arrest warrant. And since Isabella was incapacitated, Danny was the only eyewitness to the giving of the cigarette. So there was no need for Nick to go and do the undercover sting, which only caused more harm than good. They could have ended the DiPalma story right then and there. But of course this is SVU so all bets are off.
Issue 2: Where is the common sense from the police? Interview all bystanders who saw Isabella with DiPalma (reasonable suspicion) then pick up leads from these statements and find a way to track him down. Nick Fox, a cop who was on leave, should have whenever he did find out how to get in touch and find DiPalma, did not relay this information to his former colleagues. His better judgement escaped him when he brought Jessica in on this. Didn't he learn his lesson from the chop shop deal?
Other than these flaws, the book was exceptional.
Sneaking in.......2005-08-28
I loved this book.Jessica has meet a new guy named Clay. What she dosent know is that he is very dangerous, and hes after soemone.....Nick Fox. Elizabeth and Tom are finally back together intil Elizabeth finds a box of comdoms under toms bed. Most of them gone. Did Tom sleep with Dana when Liz and Tom werent together?Isabella feels that her boyfriend Danny is to controling. Will Danny learn from his ways before something happens....soemthing deadly? This was a very good book and i would recomnd it to anyone
Cat and Mouse.......2005-04-11
Elizabeth and Tom are back together, but not for long,Tom has a secret that will break Elizbeth's heart for good. Nick Fox has gone from cop to College student, and Jessica doen't like it one bit,and she fell in love with a man who loves danger. Isabella Ricci, and the rest of the Thetas go to this Alpha Chi[I think] party where I forgot his name, gave Isabella ,who I can care less about because he doesn't have any brothers and sisters. a PCP laced cigarette, since she doesn't smoke, and she fell off the balcony of Alpha Chi house.
it was geart until...........2004-10-24
it was great until jessica set her sights on clay, which doesnt surprise me since jessica is a ho anyway. im serious. i mean, why didnt nick just punch them both? i mean, clay wasnt flirting with himself. but other than the jessica/nick situation, the book was fantastic.

Jessica Sneaks out to see Johnny Buck.......2005-03-14
Jessica wants to see Johnny Buck, but her parents won't let her twin sister Elizabeth or her see him, only Steven and his date. Some of the Unicorns aren't allowed to see Johnny Buck, either like Mary Wallace,Ellen Riteman and Tamara Chase. Jessica sees this ad in Casey's Ice Cream Parlor for dog sitting. She takes it. She meets Mrs.Bramble,an elderly lady with an elderly dog named Sally. She takes Sally to the Wakefield home when Mrs.Bramble is on Vacation, she takes good care of it untill Johnny Buck's concert. She sneaks out to Lila Fowler's house, she ties the dog up,then it got away,I thought It went after a cat who scratched Sally's nose.Lila and Jessica go to the Johnny Buck concert together, and she wants her hat, which Johnny threw to her a year earlier autographed. At Intermission,Bruce Patman and Jess go on a Coke Break. After the concert,Jessica gets a big surprise,It wasn't a one-of-a-kind-hat and Johnny has tons of them. The one autographing them are a fat man and a woman, not Johnny himself. Jessica lost 1 of the earrings for Mrs.Wakefield's birthday present. Jessica makes it up to Mrs.Bramble for her carelessness by walking the dog every Saturday and Sunday. Jessica met Brooke Dennis who kicked Sally when Jess was out walking her. What a Witch!
Jessica always learns the hard way.......2001-08-01
Jessica is so desperate to see Johnny Buck live in concert that she is careless in her duties as a dog-sitter and the sweet, old dog goes missing.WHOOPS!!There is big trouble for Jessica
OK.......2001-04-25
Jessica goes to a Johnny Buck concert without letting her parents know. She is supposed to be looking after a dog. Parts of this book were a little boring, but it was ok.
It's not the best in the series.......2000-12-17
The Sweet Valley Twins series is great! I've enjoyed it for a long time. It's too bad that these books are now going out of print! This book is not one of the best ones in the series, though. In this story, Jessica sneaks out to see Johnny Buck, her favorite rock star. I just don't think it's very realistic. Jessica honestly believed Johnny Buck remembered her from the third row of concert a few years back? That was hard to swallow. I didn't like how selfish and immature Jessica acted. But it's a fun story as usual and I recommend giving it a try.
