Customer Reviews:
Lacking a few things.......2006-07-28
I've recently returned from a few weeks in Tibet. One of my group had this phrase book and we tried to use it to speak with our driver. A few things: First, a pronunciation guide would have helped. Second, we found some common words missing, or at least were not able to find them the way the book is laid out. We ended up drawing pictures on Post-Its to communicate with our driver and learn words from him in this way.
Invaluable When Traveling Individually in Tibet.......2006-02-22
I've been to Tibet five times now, and each time I have carried my now well worn copy of this phrasebook with me. Without it, I'd be at a real loss. It is has proven wonderful for communicating with locals - not only in Lhasa, but also in far more remote parts of the country. It is safe to say that using this phrasebook has enhanced my experiences in Tibet many times over.
If I did have one criticism of it, it would be that while it does have a brief English to Tibetan Dictionary in back, it would greatly benefit from a Tibetan to English Dictionary as well. So many times Tibetans have picked up the phrasebook from me and searched in vain for a word that they are trying to find.
But that criticism is minor. If you're traveling in Tibet on your own, this phrasebooks is a must. Depending on how long you're going to be in the country, you may want to consider the LP Mandarin Phrasebook as well.....
Probably the best you'll find for what you need.......2005-12-23
As a small language book that is only meant to give you the basics this is a great book.
A warning though... This book attempts to educated the reader in a "standard Tibetan language". They mention the three main dialects of U-tsang, Amdo, and Kham and claim that great interaction between them is leading to this standardization. It has not be my experience nor have I seen other scholars even mention the existence of such a standardization. From what I have learned the three dialects are quite different to the point of mutual misunderstanding. I do not feel that this book prepared me to speak Amdo, nor would it prepare anyone else to speak either Amdo or Kham. If that is your goal, good luck finding any book that can do that. But, for most people this is irrelevant. Most interaction with Tibetans by Westerners is with central U-tsang Tibetans. I never thoought about it before, but most of the Tibetan exiles are central/U-tsang.
Upon further consultation with some Tibetans I have come to the conclusion that some mishmash of the dialects does exist in the Tibetan diaspora in India. So this book would be more useful there. Keep in mind though that the original exodus into India consisted mostly of Central Tibetans and so this new amalgamation likely favors that dialects sensibilities.
Oh, what a great little book!.......2005-05-29
I just love this little book. I haven't got to travel to tibet as of yet, but I do attend teachings at a Drikung Kagyu monastery where I interact with a few native tibetans. I must admit, I usually chicken out when it comes to trying to really speak. But it is soooo fun to be able to find words and phrases that I already know from practices and be able to see them in other usage.
A terrific book! Ok, one thing, the print, especially the tibetan script is tiny, but then there is so much info crammed in this pocket-sized book, who can really complain. if you have a hard time with little print, throw a little reading magnifier strip in your pocket with it :)
Excellent.......2003-05-28
My main objective was learning to speak some Tibetan on a conversational level, and not just a traveler's level. The book teaches the writitng system and enough grammar to be able to correctly speak Tibetan as we speak everyday English. Nothing too deep and technical, but nothing too brief. The small book is absolutely jam-packed with words and phrases. It suits the need of both the traveler and one who wants a basic conversational ability in Tibetan. It's value exceeds the price greatly!

Book Description
It's the championship game against Hara Commercial High, and Nate Torres has sunk a 25-footer at the end of the first half to give Johnan a commanding lead. The second half, however, remains to be played Hara's defense has gotten them this far, so there's no reason to think that they wouldn't be bringing their "A" game with them in this final game of the season. But anyone who knows Harlem Beat should be familiar with the skills that Johnan's Shurman and Kobayashi bring to the table. And now that Nate Torres, with his amazing "high-loop lay-up", has come into his own, you can be sure that Johnan will play a tougher game in the second half as well.

The Best Ever.......2005-03-04
I was always interested in viewing Harlem Beat, but I never got around to it being young and a new emerging anime fan through the Sailor Moon genre, I spent all of my money or Rayearth and Ranma. Now...7 years later, I must say, manga on a much more realistic level, such as this, is like a breath of fresh air. I got interested in Harlem Beat through reading Rebound in my local library. Since I had already gone so far into Rebound, I decided that I wanted to get back at it's roots and look into Harlem Beat, and I must say, this series keeps me smiling. We know in real life that there's not always a happy ending and the guy doesn't always get the girl or vice versa. The very reason for me why romantic comics get quite boring after a while and feel like a waste of money. Harlem Beat seems to parallel life on a lot of aspects. Me and my sister find Harlem Beat quite inspriring to the point where we quote it. I think it's one of the best series to look into, unless your preference is more towards super powers and romance. In addition to being funny, and having a variety of well developed characters, it can teach you some good lessons to apply to life.
Yahhhhh!!!!!!!!!.......2004-05-09
Hmph. Why are people comparing Harlem Beat to Slam Dunk!?!?! YOU SHOULDN'T!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Anyway... I LIKE Harlem Beat. A LOT. Okay, the art may seem strange at the start but soon enough you'll learn to appreciate it. Can you see all the detail? And how the movement is shown? I don't play basketball so I don't know if these moves are impossible but I don't give a darn! Harlem Beat gives great inspiration to bench-warmers and can teach nearly anybody teamwork is what makes a team win.
so cool.......2003-10-16
I first read it in the library because I was so bored. I just happen to pick it. It stunned me right away. I have watch the animation of Slam Dunk, I thought Slam Dunk is the best. But now I am not sure about it. Harlem Beat is so cool. If u luv basket ball, better get Harlem Beat( and Slam Dunk, it's also a great one.)
I LOVE THIS!.......2002-05-06
On my country, this comic has it's own place in the heart of me and my pals. Even though I read some critical text that says it just not worth in this page, I know it's worth it. Natte soon will be going strong. And I already buy and read volume 1 until 27. I think it will be ended at volume 29, and I am really sad about that. The art work getting better through the timeand personally, I am never see something more like it. The story line will be better, and It is the best manga you'll ever read. Just buy it because it is funny, entertaining and it is all you wanted
No where near the SLAM DUNK level.......2001-08-10
Although this book is a funny read, the art is horrible. The impossiblility of the moves is one thing, but to have such horrible form when shooting is another. The artist obviously doesn't play bbasketball, or he just hasn't bothered to watch and see how it's really done. The plot is pretty well thought out, but it's very hard to tell characters apart just by the art. The only variables, it seems, are hair, eyebrows and slight differences in the eyes. Overall this comic is not worth it.

Love this Manga.......2001-06-06
This story has helped me w/ the determention w/ my basketball. The story is about Nate Torres a 15 year student that was a a bench warmer. Intill he started playing hoops. He was able to over come this by hearing a quote from Johnan's number player. He said that when you sink your first shot, it feels like the best thing on earth. I am so waiting to get money and buy number 7. And I can't wait till Harlem Beat 8 comes out! Hope this helps you. Buy Harlem Beat!
Beginning To Look Alot Like "Slam Dunk".......2001-03-31
This is a new beginning for the series' main character, Nate Torres. In the first five volumes, we saw how Nate grows to become a hero in Street Basketball. After all the excitement of the previous volumes, this newest edition tones down the excitement alot! However, volume six brings it to the next transition, High School Basketball! And Nate starts to learn the intricacies of Team Basketball. It's not as well developed as "Slam Dunk", but be patient! Like the first five volumes, Nate will overcome!! And it's half the fun watching him develop into the next "Shoe"!
