5 out of 5 stars The "Bible" of Identification for the Carribean!.......2007-10-15

This is a must-have set for the SCUBA diver who is serious about knowing "exactly what is that fish/creature/coral" . And, even for the recreational diver, the books are laid out in a format to allow one's curiosity to help one to learn more about what exactly one can see while diving. Just about every live-aboard dive boat that I have been on counts this as a staple amongst its reference library. It is a nice set to have at home to review before or after diving - or even just to learn more about possibly what one MIGHT see on a future dive!

4 out of 5 stars Identifying things underwater in the Caribbean........2007-08-26

I am a Brit who has been travelling to the Caribbean to dive with a Rotary group on an annual basis for the past 5 years during which we have dived in the North, East, West and Southern areas. One of my diving colleagues brought along the Reef Set and having looked at it, I was so impressed that I decided to buy a Set for myself - a great reference work for someone who is keen to put names to the things they see underwater.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful.......2007-08-15

I was working as a scuba instructor down in Grand Cayman when the first edition came out. I can't tell you what an impact the reef fish identification guide had. I have the whole set and it's wonderful.

5 out of 5 stars The best in print.......2007-08-11

If you dive, this is the guide you must have to identify what you see. Indespensible for any trip.

5 out of 5 stars The Best Guides in the Ocean.......2007-05-21

This set makes identifying fish, creatures, and corals possible for anyone. The authors developed a revolutionary grouping system to help the user focus observations, from which one can then refer to the book to make a positive identification. The photos are fabulous, and in the Reef Fish book, the authors even tell you where they were taken. Information is geared to those who spend time underwater (both the "Reef Fish" and "Reef Creature" books tell readers how organisms react to divers). Although one can use these books by thumbing through the pictures alone, there is much valuable information in the concise writing leading up to the photos, especially the authors' notes and explanations of the identification groups. Descriptions accompanying the photos help one learn subtle differences and sharpen observations further. In all, these three books are "must haves" for those who want to know what they're looking at under the ocean.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Great book, but 2nd ed. and not the 3rd!.......2007-10-05

This is probably the best reef creature ID book out there for Florida, the Carribean and the Bahamas, but buy the third edition instead. Semi-hard cover.

4 out of 5 stars Awesome guide!.......2007-07-19

I bought this item for my trip to the Caribbean. I'm a marine biologist by training, and I loved this book because it gave information above and beyond just identification. It also tells you how likely it was that the critter you saw was the one pictured in the book. Then there are lists of all the species in the back, with space for you to record when and where you saw it. I had so much fun combing this book after snorkeling to identify all the organisms I had seen! What a great investment! I also like this book because it arranges species by their scientific classification. It could have been a bit more thorough, though--i saw plenty of organisms that aren't mentioned in this book at all.

5 out of 5 stars interesting and educational.......2007-05-23

i think its a really good book because it tells you almost every thing you can see in the ocean. I really like it.

5 out of 5 stars Thankful diver.......2007-05-09

This book is a great resource for anyone interested in marine invertebrates from Florida, Caribbean and the Bahamas. It is a especially useful reference for divers because of the great underwater photography depicting the animals as one would while diving. This guide also has information on the taxonomy, popular and scientific names, size and depth, as well as visual id tips, abundance and distribution, habitat and behavior, reaction to divers, and additional information of interest. In some cases, there is information on effect on divers if the species is known to cause a negative effect or potentially dangerous. More than 50 researchers contributed to make the book as accurate as possible. I am a marine biologist, I am very happy with my purchase and highly recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars A Great Underwater Identification Guide for the Curious!.......2005-09-30

I highly recommend this guide, as well as the whole "Reef Series" by Humann & Deloach, for Divers, Snorkelers and anyone who is curious about living things beneath the sea! H & D are highly respected for their ongoing work, identifying, cataloging and photographing underwater critters that many of us may never see! Reef Creatures, along with its companion books in the series are top notch. The authors are comprehensive in their scope, intelligent in their presentation -- they provide us with generous amounts of information to identify and learn about the various creatures, without turning their book into a scientic tome -- AND the photographs are gorgeous!
As a diver, I find the whole collection invaluable, and I usually take this particular book with me on dive trips. I also take along its condensed, waterproof companion in my B.C. pocket, and can make instant identifications underwater! If you are interested in the creatures of the sea, don't hesitate about this book. Humann & Deloach are the leaders in this field, and their books are the best you will ever find for visual identification purposes!

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars great reference book.......2007-01-09

For scuba divers, these volumns are unparalleled. There is so much to see under the sea and so many corals look very similar. Paul does an excellent job of helping you differentiate among species. Of course you have to use your memory or your camera to compare it to the guide book after the dive, cause the book does not tolerate depth very well. ;) Highly recommended book!

5 out of 5 stars Extremely essential!.......2004-07-12

A field guide to coral, especially by Paul Humann, is essential to your collection of ocean field guides. Hundreds of coral species are listed, including: sea fans, hard corals, soft corals, and mushroom corals. The book also explains the many diseases that possibly afflict many species. The coral entries have excellent, detailed explanations beside them, concerning species depth, range, and abundance. The photograph transfers are above average, showing enough of the coral for identification purposes. The photographs are of course very beautiful, containing various, colorful hues of these animals. Buy the waterproof, annotated version of Reef Coral ID to bring along in the ocean on a scuba diving trip. The book has been updated twice since it was published, with the original print still floating around here on Amazon.com. The second edition is far superior, containing many more listings and more beautiful photos. Completely essential field guide for a private collection.

5 out of 5 stars The Best Guide Available.......2002-04-22

This Reef Coral Identification book is THE definitive guide. In brief there is not a better guide out there. It thoroughly covers each type of coral and gives identification information as well as full color photographs. In addition to all the corals it covers other plant life likely to be encountered while snorkeling or diving. These include grasses, weeds, algae and coral diseases. With a plastic cover and the pages treated to resist water it can be taken to the beach or onto the boat without much concern about the water damaging the book. For each item the book also discusses any danger to divers that the particular coral may represent (such as fire coral).

This book can also be purchased as part of a three part set that also includes the Reef Fish Identification and Reef Creature Identification texts, each of which is equally as excellent as the Reef Coral Identification book.

5 out of 5 stars The Coral Reef Bible.......2002-01-11

Don't take my word for it, go to a handful of dive shops and this author's name will come up more than once. An excellent book, I haven't come across anything I like better. The others in this family are just as good.

5 out of 5 stars WIthout a doubt, the BEST identification book out there........2001-12-06

This is a fantastic book, and along with the other two books by this author you should be able to ID any marine creature you encounter!

The book lists virtually all types of corals including Algae, black corals, brain, lace, cactus, cup, boulder, fire, fleshy, etc.

Each entry has an excellent picture, the name, family, size, depth, and other information.

The pictures alone are worth the cost of the book!

This is definetely the book you want to have with you when you dive or snorkel. Buy it today, you won't be disappointed!

    Book Description

This up-to-date and comprehensive electronic book on two CD-ROMs provides vital information on government research and conservation efforts for coral and coral reefs, including locations in the Pacific Islands, Hawaii, Florida, Gulf of Mexico, Virgin Islands, and elsewhere.

Over 95,000 pages of informative and colorful illustrated documents and papers from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), the U.S. Coral Reef Task Force, the Coral Reef Conservation Program, Coral Health and Monitoring Program (CHAMP), Coral Reef Early Warning System (CREWS), EPA, NASA, and other federal agencies provide the best collection available anywhere of detailed information on coral reefs and their endangered ecosystems.

Coral reefs, and their associated systems of mangroves and seagrasses, are the world's most biologically diverse marine ecosystems. Reef building corals contain tiny cells of symbiotic algae that convert sunlight and nutrients into fuel for coral growth and production. Other types of corals that do not require warm water or sunlight are found in deep water, providing important habitats for commercial, recreational and other species. Boulder and massive corals, like the boulder star coral, are the "builders" of the reef. A coral head is a colony of small animals called polyps. These corals provide the reef foundations that is home to millions of reef species. Over 4,000 species of reef fish have been described so far. Elkhorn coral is a branching coral. Branching corals grow in the shallow areas of the reef crest and serve to break up the wave action as it comes onto the reef. The branches of elkhorn coral resemble an elk's rack of antlers, thus its name. Pillar coral forms numerous heavy cylindrical spires that grow upward from an encrusting base. Unlike other hard corals, which feed at night, pillar coral extends its polyps to feed during the day. Fallen pillers may give rise to new upward growing spires.

    Topics covered include:

Environmental and Anthropogenic Threats to Coral Reef Ecosystems
    Climate Change and Coral Bleaching

Based on the hit television show produced by Columbia TriStar Television.

                The road calls...

Joey and Jen totally need a Dawson-free zone, so when Jen's wealthy cousin invites her to an elegant Sweet Sixteen party in New York City, Jen coaxes a reluctant Joey along. Meanwhile, Dawson and Pacey are hot on their trail, dying to know what the girls are up to. The guys hit the road. And the road hits back....

Is high society ready for Jen's ex-boyfriend Billy, and Danny, a sophisticated senior who's totally into Joey? And two sleepless gate-crashers? It's party time....

                Joey, Dawson, Pacey, Jen.

Four fifteen-year-olds ready to take on the world.

They're learning about life, and learning how to love.

4 out of 5 stars The creekers hit new york!.......2000-08-28

I liked this book i thought the Jen and Joey story line was great but the dawson story line wasnt vewry interesting and the Pacy one was non existant! He was just thrown in here and there. But this was made up by the Jen and Joey one. This book has a different atmosphere to the other dawsons creek ones i think thats because its set in new york so it goes from quiet Capeside with the usuall dawson and Joey solemates story lines which are still there but there not the whole story, to all new ones. I think thats wg=hat makes this book good.

5 out of 5 stars It would be a great episode!.......1999-06-29

This book would make a great episode! Joey was almost happy! It was the first time that you could really see how desperate Dawson is, and how persistant Jen is to win Joey as a friend. Tihs book provides all of the usual conficts of a "too old" group of teens. I would recomend it!

                5 out of 5 stars I loved this book........1999-05-05
