Customer Reviews:
Interesting.......2006-01-27
The bit of info this book offers is interesting, as well as valuable in getting to know the people & culture. My knowledge of both areas is increased. The reading is interesting enough to maintain one's interest. I didn't want to put it down until I finished the little book, once I started to read it.
Get some culture, Hispanic-style!.......2002-09-19
These 73 "points" on Hispanic Culture give insight in areas you may have puzzled over. The alphabetical arrangement of points may seem awkward, e.g., the second point is "Approaching strangers in public to ask something," but it does yield a pleasing eclecticism.
And there's a fine index to zero in on particular topics along with a helpful bibliography. The emphasis is on "little-c" culture -- those subtle elements of behavior in daily interaction that can add to culture shock if not understood. The points pertain to the entire Spanish-speaking world, and distinctions are often made between different countries. This will be a great help to you if you are traveling in a Spanish-speaking land.
Passport has put out other books in this series: The Russian Way, The German Way, The Italian Way, The French Way, etc. I've gleaned fascinating tidbits from several of them, but haven't found them intriguing enough to make part of my home library as I did The Hispanic Way.
Great little book!.......1999-06-18
I work at a Spanish language school in Costa Rica (ilisa.com) and we give this book to students on special occasions. It deals with and explains a lot of issues that people encounter when learning Spanish here. If you deal with Hispanics a lot or are going to live in Latin America, get this book!

Customer Reviews:
My lil' dictionary and I.......2004-12-25
I'm a guy, ok? I got this insuppressible urge to become a Vegetarian and cook gourmet vegetarian cuisine. It could happen to anyone. But it happened to me. I have probably 15 veggie cookbooks and try to prepare at least three new recipes per week. I can't remember even once being stumped by some arcane ingredient or bizarre description with this life saving dictionary in hand! The phonetic pronunciation of most entries is very gratifying as well. What more is there to say? Except that I'm now thinner, smarter, faster, more virile, high blood pressure is gone and I'm crazier than when I was a carnivore! But that's off topic. Long live the revolution!
Well worth the money.......2004-10-13
If you need a quick reference guide to look up culinary terms, or techniques, this one is great for the money. The book is some what small, about 1" thick, and light paper is used, which makes this book VERY convenient unlike most references book that are overly burdensome.
I'm currently in culinary school and as a student, I use this book all the time; it has yet to dissapoint me! Quality work here. A must for any foodie
Great reference book for culinary careers........2003-09-03
This book contains not only English and French, but other languages from around the word. I am an student at the Las Vegas University studying for a four-year degree in culinary science. It's tough and you need a lot of guide books. Three I highly recommend is the Study Guide for Baking and Advance Baking. These books I found on Amazon.com and marketplace. They help me alot getting through my courses. Another tough course that involves a lot of science is Sanitation. The Study Guide for the National Servsafe Exam is also an excellent guide.
An excellent basic culinary reference book.......2002-07-26
This friendly volume is crisp, concise (tens of thousands of entries in just under 500 pages), and attractive. It is not only inexpensive, but possibly one of the best culinary dictionaries available for the home cook who simply wants a decent resource for occasional questions.
My basic test for a culinary reference book is to look up "falernum" (a by-product of rum distillation which is used as a flavoring in fruit desserts--sort of along the lines of grenadine). Well, "falernum" isn't in here, but so much other stuff is that I'm not complaining.
The pronunciations are a little iffy on foreign language terms, and the definition brevity is sometimes confusing (kiu is listed as "an ancient Chinese beer." OK. Does that make it a beer from ancient times, or a really old fermented brew that's currently available?). Still, these are minor quibbles for an admirably complete book.
Good reference book.......2002-02-27
This book has been very helpful to me. Unfortunately there have been a few words I tried to look up that weren't in there. Maybe their next edition will be more complete.

The Ancient Mediterranean

Customer Reviews:
A dictionary of *classical* place names.......2002-07-28
Michael Grant has assembled a valuable dictionary of the classical world. It is one that I often refer to first when I want to know not only the location of a site but some of its history as well
For example, there is a two-page article on Thessalonica. The city was founded c 316 BCE by one of the successors of Alexander the Great. Grant continues his history through the late 5th century CE and ends with a mention of a 1978 earthquake.
Grant's more than 700 page book includes a series of maps which are found at the beginning of the book. There is also a list of ancient sources found in a bibliography at the end of the book.
Readers whose interest focuses upon the Ancient Near East will find that Grant focuses primarily upon the Greco-Roman world. Grant sets a timeframe which usually begins with the first millennium BCE.
And though there are articles on Elephantine, Syria, and Babylon, there are no articles on Sumer, Mari, Israel, and only a handful on any site whose name begins with Tel. Also the short two/thirds page article on Egypt is under Aegyptus.
It's a valuable dictionary. However if one's interest focused upon the Greco-Roman world, one would find Michael Grant's _Guide to the Ancient World_ even more valuable than I did.
Another Indispensible Guide from Grant.......1999-02-09
Michael Grant proved himself many times over to be a master of the ancient Mediterranean world. The depth of his knowledge was astounding. This guide, like many of his others, offers scholars and laymen alike a comprehensive guide to the ancient Mediterranean world: cities, towns, rivers, countries, mountains, etc. But us goes beyond simple data listings. It is replete with insights into their origins and surrounding history and events, people associated with, the later impact of, and myths and legends of each and place in the book.
Thank goodness Michael Grant was so very prolific and loved to share his immense knowledge with the world. We owe him a substantial debt.

Meeting the buddha: on pilgrimage in buddhist india edited b
ASIN: 0898002443 |
Customer Reviews:
The most detailed guide available.......1999-12-26
This is probably the most detailed and thorough guide available to the sacred sites of Buddhism in South Asia, where it first developed. Today this land includes not only the various regions of India, but also Nepal, Pakistan, and Afghanistan, and "Holy Places of the Buddha" includes all of them. Each site is given a full description, including its place in Buddhist history and its condition today, and much of the text is accompanied by helpful maps and photographs. It would take a very long review just to list the many sites that are covered. The real value of this book is in providing a background understanding of the Buddhist holy places, but separate guidebooks (such as the Lonely Planet guides) will be required for instructions on how to get to each place. For anyone interested in Buddhism or South Asian history, and especially for anyone interested in making a pilgrimage to any of the sacred and historic places of Buddhism, I can't recommend this book highly enough.
where the Buddha lived the events and locations.......1999-09-25
This book was a friendly companion on my trip to India and Nepal. It fully describes events of the Buddha's life that occured at each location. In doing so it brings these Holy Places to life both then and now.

Book Description
Jessica Wakefield always thought Todd Wilkins was cute, but kind of dull--in other words, perfect for Elizabeth. But since Todd moved away to Vermont, he's been writing her letters, and they are anything but dull. At first, Todd just wanted to get the address of A. J. Morgan, Jessica's boyfriend, who was on the SVH basketball team with him. But Todd's letters have slowly become more and more romantic. Now, Todd wants to come for a secret visit to see Jessica. If Elizabeth finds out, she'll be furious. And A. J. will never speak to her again. Should she risk everything for Todd?

Jessica's Secret Romance with Todd.......2005-01-03
Jessica writes in her Diary about her secret romance with Todd, even secret Phone calls and letters. She even secretly Meets him.Elizabeth doesn't know anything about this.Jessica even pretends to be Elizabeth in front of Lila not to make Lila Suspicious. It is from Outcast to I can't remember.
Awesome book!.......2001-08-03
I loved this book! I just bought 2 of Elizabeth's secret diaries today. i recommend this book cause it is very suspenseful and a good book to read.
Best SVH Diary.......1999-11-26
In this one, Jessica turns down a chance at stardom because the movie producer seems more interested in her than her talent. She's too dedicated to her relationship with Sam to risk it all for 15 minutes of fame. Then (as all REAL fans know) Sam dies in a wreck.
It was an Awesome Book!.......1999-11-06
This book is one that will never get dull. I read over and over again and each time, something new stands out. It was just like reading my diary. I could really relate to the character's reactions and problems.

Customer Reviews:
Jessica's Diary.......2003-05-09
This one is one of the best of the secret love diaries.
Jessica tells the story in a quirky, quick and enjoyable way. ("I am not a baby monkey. I am not!") I loved the tests she takes. And her situations are.. realistic. For example, her situation with Duke Marin and the Devon thing. The reader thinks that Jessica was stupid about meeting Devon. But Jessica was in love with Devon in SVH so of course old feelings come back, and Jessica's feelings are understandable. But then... "Face It" wasn't continued by their diaries. But of course, the diary of Jessica is a fun, quick read. You won't be dissapointed.
What happened to Devon?.......2001-10-29
This book should never have been written, its really unbelievable and WRECKS Devon's character! Devon was one of my favourite characters in SVH, but in this book he suddenly becomes horrible in a really unrealistic way. Not worth reading, although I wouldn't say that about all the Secret Love Diaries, Elizabeth's is pretty good.
Really Good.......2001-10-01
Hey this is a really good book. I just wanna know what happened to a lot of the characters from svh. Also, what happened to the characters from SVH: Senior Year. I realize she started writing SVU before Senior Year but I think she should bring peopl from SY back into the SVU books. Although by the end of SY some of them could even be dead, not that we know that yet or anything but i think francine knows what she wants to happen in SY so she should bring back some characters to SVU like Connor, Jeremy, Tia, Will, Melissa, Andy, Evan, and more and from the SVH series Maria Santoni, and more. So Francine, if you're reading this, it would be a good idea to bring back a couple so we know what's happened to them!
Don't Miss This!.......2001-08-01
Other Sweet Valley Diaries are a big boring drag but the ones in the UNI line are fabulous. This is no exception.Let me tell you, that if you ever wondered the way that I did,yes Devon Whitelaw IS just a worthless bad person!Jessica also meets this great guy in it and I wish they had kept him in it.He was great.
Great Reader.......2001-06-26
Here is what I think: Devon: Total jerk. Idiot. I wish someone would through HIM over the side of a cliff. Jessica: Needs to wake up. Devon and her? Nuh-uh. Neil: Funniest guy on earth. Maybe it's because he's gay? He cracks me up. Sam: Stubborn. Adds more interest... Elizabeth: Is oblivious to everything. Can't she see that Jessica needs to tell her something??? The Scottish Guy (I forgot his name): Omg! He was so incredibly nice... and cool! Jess and him she stay together forever! GREAT book!
