Book Description
Meredith Mitchell is delighted when an old friend from her consular days, Toby Smythe, turns up on leave between foreign postings. But Toby has a problem---or rather his relative Alison Jenner has---and Toby wants to enlist the help of Meredith's fiancé, Detective Superintendent Alan Markby. Alison has been receiving anonymous hate mail in which reference is made to a time twenty-five years earlier when she stood trial for the murder of her aunt, Freda Kemp, but was acquitted. Who is the writer, and how does he or she know about this secret in Alison's past?
Markby is reluctant to become involved, not least because Toby is hardly his favorite person. Besides, he and Meredith are planning their wedding, and distractions aren't welcome. But inquiries into a poisoned pen campaign soon turn into a murder investigation.
With the help of Inspector Jessica Campbell, a new member of Markby's team, and the non-professional but enthusiastic assistance of Meredith and Toby, the inquiry unravels a twenty-five-year-old mystery and its dreadful legacy of violence.
Customer Reviews:
Looking for a solid mystery with really good characters, pick this one up!.......2007-03-20
The most interesting thing about this book is the very natural and realistic relationships between the people and the events that unfold as a result of these relationships. The characters act out because of their shame, fear, loyalty, envy, ambition, sloth, etc. They all have unique characters and world views and all act accordingly. It seems an odd thing to say, but it seems very organic and believable. I think Granger must be a great student of human nature.
I quite like the main characters, too. Meredith Mitchell works for the Foreign Office and her fiancé Alan Marksby is in the police. In their 30's and 40's, they are a strong couple who are willing to compromise to be together and tolerate each other's baggage. Like Toby Smythe, a friend and co-worker of Meredith's who Alan doesn't care for, and who gets them involved in their current unpleasantness - poison pen letters which are being sent to his aunt.
Another thing I liked about this book is that Granger doesn't have Mitchell and Marksby competing to solve the crime before the other does. I find it so annoying when the unofficial detective messes up evidence and conceals information from the police. Instead, she investigates background information that the police don't have the time or inclination to pursue and then turns over what she finds to Marksby. It is a pleasing, cooperative effort that doesn't grate on the nerves.
Did I guess it? Sort of. If you are looking for a solid mystery with really good characters, pick this one up. This is a long series and I plan to go back and read the others, too.
Enjoyable.......2006-01-28
Agree with Laura Pressler regarding the grammatical errors/typos. It's really said when you pay for a book and the entire story line is disruped with these errors.
Very Enjoyable Read.......2005-03-15
I was eagerly awaiting the next installment in this series, and I was not disappointed. This was a very enjoyable and satisfying read, even if, as others have pointed out, the ending was a little rushed. If you haven't read any of the earlier Mitchell and Markby mysteries by Ms. Granger it may take you a little while to understand the relationships among the repeating characters, but that won't detract from the story and shouldn't stop you from starting with this book. I suspect that when you're finished you'll want to read the earlier ones as well.
I'm looking forward to the next book in the series, and hope there's not as much time between books as there was between this and the previous one.
I have just one quibble. Did others notice the several typographical errors throughout the book? I think editors and proofreaders are relying too heavily on computerized spelling and grammar checkers, and not enough on carefully reviewing the actual text.
A village mystery that has some realism........2005-03-01
Detective Superintendent Alan Markby and his fiancé Meredith Mitchell have been asked to look into the source of some poison pen letters by Toby Smythe , a friend and colleague of Meredith's . Meredith and Toby have been friends for years and both work for the Foreign Office. Toby's uncle, Jeremy Jenner's second wife has been receiving hateful letters alluding to a murder trial in which she was the defendant twenty years ago. She was cleared of the charges, but it seems someone wants to embarrass her. Before Markby and Merideth's investigation has barely started, Jeremy Jenner`s daughter is found murdered made to look like the murder so many years ago.
Ann Granger can be counted upon to produce a really good cozy mystery. Her characters are a bit more realistic and dimensional than the traditional cozy. The plot was well constructed. The clues came at a quick enough pace to keep suspense high without it being a book that could not be put down. I look forward to the next Markby and Mitchell mystery.
3 1/2 stars: enjoyable in spite of the rushed ending.......2005-02-10
Meredith Mitchell is rather looking forward to her upcoming marriage to Detective Superintendent Alan Markby, and their moving into the old vicarage. But first comes the packing, renovating of the vicarage and selling of both their current abodes. And in the meantime there is Meredith's old friend, Toby Smythe's return to England to enjoy. But Toby has a problem -- or more exactly a relative of his has. Alison Jenner, Toby's cousin's wife, has been receiving poison pen letters. About 25 years ago, Alison's aunt, Freda Kemp, was murdered, and Alison was tried for the crime. She was, however, acquitted of the charge. But now, she's receiving letters accusing of the murder and threatening to make her pay for her crime. Alison is near breaking point, and so Toby asks for Markby to talk to the Jenners and listen to their concerns. And although Markby is understandably reluctant to get unofficially involved in anything, he agrees to meet the Jenners. But before he can even start an investigation into the poison pen letters, Alison's stepdaughter is murdered in a manner similar to Freda Kemp. Is the murderer and the poison pen writer one and the same? Are the two murders, separated by 25 years connected at all? And what is Alison's part in all this? Is she innocent of all that is happening around her? Or is she hiding a darker and more sinister character? Detective Superintendent Markby must ask himself all these questions as he considers all the angles of this case...
This latest Mitchell & Markby mystery novel while enjoyable and intriguing, still felt a little off mainly because of the manner in which it suddenly culminated -- things were unfolding at a sedate but satisfactorily manner, when things suddenly picked up at a dizzy pace and clues and suspects came out of the woodwork for the explosive end. All very well, but I did still feel a little shortchanged -- perhaps if the real culprit could have been more than just a sinister suggestion in earlier chapters? All in all however, this Mitchell & Markby mystery novels was wonderfully engaging police cozy that was well written and loads of fun to loose oneself in. And in spite of my faintly aggrieved feelings, I did enjoy reading "That Way Lies Murder" quite a bit

Book Description
A legendary trailblazer, Arlene Blum defied the climbing establishment of the 1970s by leading the first all-female teams on successful ascents of Mount McKinley and Annapurna and by being the first American woman to attempt Mount Everest. At the same time, her groundbreaking scientific work challenged gender stereotypes in the academic community and led to important legislation banning carcinogens in children’s sleepwear. With candor and humor, Breaking Trail recounts Blum’s journey from an overprotected childhood in Chicago to the tops of some of the highest peaks on earth, and to a life lived on her own terms. Now with an index, additional photos, and a new afterword, this book is a moving testament to the power of taking risks and pursuing dreams.
Download Description
"Arlene Blum is a legendary trailblazer by any measure. Defying the climbing establishment of the 1970s, she led the first teams of women on successful ascents of Mt. McKinley and Annapurna, and was the first American woman to attempt Mt. Everest. In her long, adventurous career, she has played a leading role in more than twenty expeditions and forged a place for women in the perilous arena of high-altitude mountaineering. Breaking Trail is the story of Blum's journey from her overprotected youth in Chicago to the tops of some of the highest peaks on Earth. Chronicling a life of extraordinary personal and professional achievement, Blum's intimate and inspiring memoir explores how her childhood fueled her need to climb -- and how, in turn, her climbing liberated her from her childhood. Each chapter in Breaking Trail begins with a poignant vignette from Blum's early life. Using these as starting points, she traces her evolution as a climber, from a hilariously incompetent beginner to an aspiring mountaineer to a successful, confident, and world-renowned expedition leader. Along the way, she takes us to some of the most extreme and exquisite places on the planet, sharing the exhilaration, toil, and danger of climbing high. Blum also relates the story of her scientific career, which, like her mountaineering, challenged gender stereotypes and was filled with singular accomplishments, including the banning of two cancer-causing chemicals and the initiation of an important area of biophysical research. Writing with remarkable candor and introspection, Blum recounts her triumphs and tragedies, and provides a probing look at what drove her to endure extreme physical discomfort -- and even to risk her life -- attempting high, remote summits around the world. In her story, she shares intimate insights into how and why climbers persevere under the harshest circumstances, cope with the deaths of their comrades, and balance their desire for adventure with their personal lives. Complemented with breathtaking personal photos and detailed maps, Breaking Trail is a deeply moving account of how one woman overcame adversity to become one of the world's most famous climbers, and a testament to the power of taking risks and pursuing dreams. Customer Reviews:
A Journey of Spirit and Determination.......2007-08-22
Arlene Blum has not only written her own story, but bared her soul in doing so. Her honesty in describing relationships and feelings in her quest for equality on the mountaintop and in everyday life is unusual in a memoir. Her passion for climbing high summits, both physical and metaphorical, blends with a compassion for the well-being of all who share her journey. You may have to read between the lines of her modestly stated life to catch the far-reaching impact of her accomplishments, but we are all better off because of the trail she pioneered. Her book stands alone on the summit of personal memoirs.

Like no other-triple wow!.......2007-05-23
There are just a dozen or two books that I've read and treasured, not only for their excellence, but also because they're like no other. This is one of those rare reading experiences. Blum is a female mountain climber writing about her successes and failures, her highs and lows. You don't have to be a crusader for women's rights, nor do you need to know or care the first thing about mountaineering to be entranced by this magical book.
Blum has an amazing story to tell, and she tells it like Scheherezade--every episode leaving the reader impatient for the next chapter. In the end the book is about the triumph of the human spirit, and you don't need to be a climber to appreciate it. Buy it and open it--Blum will do the rest.
An Inspiring Tale by a Remarkable Woman.......2007-04-25
Arlene's life and accomplishments are as remarkable as the story in which she details them. Breaking Trail is a compelling read for many reasons. It is written with disarming honesty, giving us the opportunity to understand a complex woman whose determination and talent allowed her to succeed at passions that were atypical for women - mountain climbing and physical chemistry. Her journey included many obstacles, including the deaths of numerous close friends, sexist stereotypes from members of the climbing community and academia, as well as a childhood that was less than ideal. But her story not only inspires others to persevere in spite of hurdles, it also brings to life the beauty of exploring the mountains for both outdoor enthusiasts and armchair adventurers.
WOW.......2007-04-24
What a great book about one women's adventures in the alpine world! I don't know what makes a person attempt such dangerous activities, but clearly she was driven to follow her own course in life and battled the male dominated climbing establishment on her own terms. Well done!!
Mountain Memoir.......2007-04-12
This memoir about climbing some of the world's highest peaks is one part narrative and one part mystery. You'll be inspired and entertained.

The Authors Deserve Chapters of Their Own.......2006-12-21
This well-edited paperback is nicely designed and printed. Purchased as part of an effort to become familiar with the work of Upstate New York authors, I had no idea how fortunate I was about to become.
Upon beginning the read, my interest level wasn't very high. The stories didn't seem all that remarkable. Then, fifty pages or so in, they did -because by then I'd realized that the women whose stories this volume contains are exactly, precisely the kind of women I find most admirable. Before, names like Kate Field, Inez Milholland, Jeanne Robert Foster, and especially Orra Phelps meant nothing to me. Let me tell you, here are some women. And the list keeps growing; Grace Hudowalski, Miriam Kashima, Anne LaBastille and more. I am so thankful for this book, but it's two chapters too short. I want to know more about the authors. I have a hunch each of them belongs here too.
Art Tirrell, author of "The Secret Ever keeps", 978-1-60164-004-8, from Kunati Books April 2007.
Breaking Trail is the story of the American woman.......2006-08-07
If you think this book simply tells the story about Adirondack women, you are mistaken. While Breaking Trail: Remarkable Women of the Adirondacks details the lives of Adirondack women, these stories speak volumes about the struggles and achievements of American women in the "frontier" territory we know as the 6-million-acre Adirondack Park. From Jeanne Robert Foster to Joan Payne, Grace Hudowalski and Anne LaBastille, the lives of these women span from the 1800s to the present. Their successes are chronicled by two other remarkable women, author Sandra Weber and folk singer/songwriter Peggy Lynn, who are leading the way in the celebration of the American woman. They are role models for all young women in the United States, and this book should be mandatory reading in schools for both boys and girls. Breaking Trail continues to be helpful while I research my "New York State's Mountain Heritage: Adirondack Attic" book series about the artifacts from the Adirondack Museum's collection. This is not only a joy to read; it is an essential book for my Adirondack library.

Book Description
Becky has always lived with her family in a log cabin in the Yukon, but when the fur market dwindled away, her father, a dog musher and trapper, had to quit trapping and she and her family moved into town. Now her father is depressed: he doesn't laugh or talk to anyone. He tires easily and can't stand any noise or stress. Worse, he has lost interest in sled racing — a love that he and Becky once shared. When spring comes, the family decides to go back to their cabin for the summer. Becky's mother hopes that going back to the mountains will cheer up Dad, but Becky has another plan. She's going to train her own dog team to race in the Junior Quest, a challenging five-day dog race across Alaska, in hopes of making her father happy.
The journey to the cabin will be a test for both Becky and her dogs. Will they make it to the cabin before the ice breaks? Will her mother give up on her father if he doesn't get better soon? And will her parents discover the secret that she has been keeping from them?
Customer Reviews:
Excellent Book!.......2005-07-04
This isn't the kind of book that I normally read; I usually lean more towards fantasy, (CS Lewis, JRR Tolkein), but this was very well written.
The book is set in Yukon, Canada, and is the story of a young girl who dreams of mushing dogs. The imagry is beautiful, and the storyline is clear and captivating.
If you're looking for something to read to your children, any age, this is definitely worth looking at.
The reason for the four stars (as upposed to five) is that it IS a children's book, and not something I would normally read.
Great book.......2005-07-04
Normally this isn't the kind of book I read as I'm more into fantasy, but I really enjoyed this. I loved the characters who were very realistic. The reason I took off a star is because as I said up above, I like books to be a bit longer. I'd definitelly recomend this book to anyone who is looking for a good read.

This book was a very good story. It had everything a snowmobilier would want to read. I'm not one to read alot of books but, after reading this book by Hetteen, I could read alot more from him. He's just a guy who never gave up. period. Thats all anyone needs to know about him.
Breaking Trail.......1999-12-06
An excellent account of a true entrepeneuer's struggles to manufacture and market his dream machines. Edgar Hetteen epitomizes the "find a need and fill it" vision that has made America the cream of the crop of the industrial revolution. From the straw chopper to the "bug-o-vac" to the snowmobile the book follows the life of a man who was definitely ahead of his times and his struggle to get the rest of the world to catch up. Great reading for motorheads, snowmobilers and modern entrepenuers. I highly recommend it.
Down to earth real life experience/adventure.......1999-04-10
This story is about the experiences of Edgar Hetteen and his desire to prevail over the many obstacles confronting him, to reach the vision he had for a new outdoor activity. This story is told in the words of a man who truely experiences life, the joys and frustrations that only life can give if your willing to grap hold and hang on. If you want to be inspired read this book!

Book Description
Growing up on the far corners of the furthest reaches of the Vernon reserve, little did Len Marchand - or anyone around him - realize that he would end up spending most of his life in Ottawa. The first elected aboriginal member of parliament in all of Canada, Len Marchand was involved in some of the most exciting, heady days of Canadian politics. Not only was he the first elected native person, he went on
to serve as the minister of various portfolios, perhaps his favourite being the Ministry of Environment. Here he was able to use his background and education to affect one of the most sensitive issues of the 20th century, the environment.
This is Len's story, and it is a story of courage and hope that should inspire us all. Len Marchand grew up in a society that said people of his background couldn't vote, couldn't buy liquor, couldn't do much of anything without the approval of the Department of Indian Affairs. Yet he overcame all odds and served Canada - this country which relegated his people to second class - faithfully, first as member of parliament and then as senator.
His collaborator, Matt Hughes, is no stranger to politics, having worked as a speech writer on both the provincial and federal level. He has written several books and currently is under contract with Warner Aspect of New York for two thrillers, one of which is completed.

WHAT A LIFE...WHAT A WOMAN...WHAT A MEMOIR..........2006-12-01
Having read and loved the author's other book, "A Woman's Place", I looked forward to reading this one, knowing that, at the very least, I could expect a well-written book. Well, it is that and much more. It is a memoir that kept me turning its pages, as it provides a peek as to how this highly intelligent and articulate, nice, Jewish girl became a mountaineer with which to contend.
In a macho arena, where women were considered to be mere appendages to the male of the species, when considered at all, the author is surely a trailblazer. With her world famous, women only, expedition to summit Annapurna, she put women on the mountaineering map, letting the world know that a woman's place is on top. Independent and singular in her desire to make her mark, the author has written a memoir that provides insight into her desire to climb mountains, as well as her development as both a person and a woman.
Set across the backdrop of women's changing roles in the social fabric, this memoir is an intimate and compelling look at a life well-lived and filled with achievement in a man's world, as the author is not only a mountaineer but a well-respected scientist known for some ground-breaking research that has had impact on the general public. Neither of these fields was initially receptive to the inclusion of woman, and the author's memoir details her travails in gaining acceptance as an equal, both as a mountaineer and a scientist.
Written with humor and insight, the author creates an intimate memoir that chronicles her development into the person that she became. This is a memoir that will keep the reader engaged and turning the pages of this wonderful book. Highly enjoyable, those who are interested in why one would climb mountains, as well as those who enjoy well-written, interesting memoirs, will love this book. Bravo!

Book Description
When he was a boy, Tom Morimoto saved up a dollar and ordered a book called How to Box so he could defend himself against the kids who called him "Jap." In fact, Morimoto has always been a fighter who went from working in his father's market garden to working with sheikhs in Dubai. If anyone should write a memoir it is Tom Morimoto, and he has done it grandly with Breaking Trail.
Morimoto lived through a historic period before the modern age changed the North forever. He describes his childhood growing up in Depression-era Fort McMurray and the town's characters: old-timer trappers, German barons, and bush pilots like Wop May, and R. B. Bennett's dipsomaniac brother, George.
As a young man, Morimoto worked on an Athabasca River scow and as a radio operator for Canadian Airways before travelling to Yellowknife to stake gold claims and work in the Negus gold mine. His next adventure found him serving as a signalman during the Second World War, and surviving Juno Beach on D-Day. Later, Morimoto became a chemical engineer, a pioneer in the burgeoning gas industry in Alberta. He eventually managed a gas plant in Dubai.
Breaking Trail is a rich memoir from a man who has experienced much of what the twentieth century offered northern and western Canada. It is not only the story of a life well-lived but also a wonderful tale with the characters and places common to the most opulent of novels.
