extremely detailed, well organized, good read.......2007-10-14
Before I read this book I didn't know anything about composting toilets, except I had heard that they are 'green' and I am building a 'green' cabin so I decided to find out what it's all about ... when I first started the book I was not sure if I was up to having a composting toilet. I continued to read and laugh about 'skid marks' (I mean laugh out loud, there are funny parts in this book) but by the end I have decided that it is something I can do and we are going to do it. He made it understandable, he wrote about the details in an understandable way, and he explained why it is safe (big issue) and why it is environmental. So I am very happy I bought this book and I feel that with this referrence I can do this. And it was a fun read.
Most complete and credible book on the topic.......2003-01-04
After reading a couple of books about composting toilets and graywater systems that were either suspiciously poetic or a little too humorous, I was happy to find this book.
As someone who needs a variety of systems for a variety of high-use sites, I was glad to find a book that deals with this topic in technically and responsibly (in terms of public health). I showed this book to my local health agent, and he was far more amenable to permiting an "experimental system" afterwards, saving me a lot of money.
Also, after experimenting with various systems over the years, I am aware that some systems still described in books and magazines just don't work well. The authors of this book have apparently had the same experience, and I appreciate their researching this so completely.
The best book out there.......2002-11-15
I would venture that the authors have forgotten more about toilets than most of the rest of us will ever know. There is no possible toilet configuration that does not receive at least cursory discussion. I only have 2 complaints about the book, both of them minor. First there were a couple of systems that I felt were described incompletely and critiqued a bit unfairly. Second, much of the book seemed to be a compilation of other writings without a lot of editing. Consequently there is significant repetition, and a presentation of information that is sometimes slightly disorganized and confusing.
I definitely think that the book is worth reading.
Impressive, comprehensive, reader friendly, practical........2000-04-06
The Composting Toilet System Book is an impressive, comprehensive, reader friendly, and practical guide to choosing, planning and maintaining composting toilet systems for those seeking an alternative to traditional sewer and septic tank systems. David Del Porto and Carol Steinfeld collaborate to explain the technologies, sources, applications, graywater issues, and regulations relevant to a composting toilet system for the home, whether manufactured or site-built. Highly recommended.
The Definitive Composting Toilet Book.......2000-01-01
Del Porto's book is the definitive composting toilet book at this time. There is nothing even close. His book covers all aspects of composting toilet systems and touches on graywater issues as well. He treats the composting toilet as part of the home system. If a person is seriously interested in installing/having a composting toilet, this book can save him/her all of the mistakes people usually make. He even (carefully) explodes some of the advertising myths that the purveyors of composting toilets would have us believe. The book covers ready-made systems as well as home built sytems. As trite as this sounds, the book truly is a must for someone considering intstalling composting toilet.
Book Description
Zones of social abandonment are emerging everywhere in Brazil's big cities--places like Vita, where the unwanted, the mentally ill, the sick, and the homeless are left to die. This haunting, unforgettable story centers on a young woman named Catarina, increasingly paralyzed and said to be mad, living out her time at Vita. Anthropologist João Biehl leads a detective-like journey to know Catarina; to unravel the cryptic, poetic words that are part of the "dictionary" she is compiling; and to trace the complex network of family, medicine, state, and economy in which her abandonment and pathology took form.
As Biehl painstakingly relates Catarina's words to a vanished world and elucidates her condition, we learn of subjectivities unmade and remade under economic pressures, pharmaceuticals as moral technologies, a public common sense that lets the unsound and unproductive die, and anthropology's unique power to work through these juxtaposed fields. Vita's methodological innovations, bold fieldwork, and rigorous social theory make it an essential reading for anyone who is grappling with how to understand the conditions of life, thought and ethics in the contemporary world.
Customer Reviews:
THIS BOOK WILL CHANGE YOUR PERCEPTION OF MADNESS.......2005-09-07
Destined to become an immediate classic, Joao Biehl's Vita: Life in a Zone of Social Abandonment unfolds like a mystery and reads like a novel. Extraordinary is the way in which the author examines a single, tragic woman as a lens through which the ills of society become visible. With compassion tempered by acuity, Biehl introduces us to Catarina, an impoverished migrant in the Brazilian city of Porto Alegre who pedals feverishly in a static bicycle within the confines of Vita, a clinic of sorts where diseased and insane people are abandoned. Catarina is struggling to become part of life, regain affection and recapture social connections after more than 12 years of erroneous diagnoses and perilous medicalization. Is she really insane? To give out the answer would betray much of what makes the book extraordinary. The reader is led into a world of market forces, inefficient bureaucracies and decomposing family ties in which no one and everyone is responsible for Catarina's fate. Although the book focuses on a Brazilian city, it's lessons transcend national boundaries--it is as meaningful in the U.S. as it would be in Turkey. Other authors have masterfully written about the poor and excluded but very few have been able to etch in detail a life worth living while at the same time unmasking the larger forces that shape ndividual fates. With this book, Biehl joins a small number of ethnographers who have successfully achieved that feat.

A little disappointed.......2007-08-23
The photos are lovely but I was disappointed by the lack of historical photos. I wanted to see earlier costumes and dancers instead of the same costumes on different dancers and the same dancers in different costumes. I also thought there could have been more historical text - what was included was a little sketchy.
a huge disappointment.......2007-02-03
My sister was a Rockette and I was a Rockette myself for 21 years.I was looking forward to getting this book and after checking it out I was ready to return it.The costumes are great, most of them I had worn but with all the costumes the Rockettes have worn through the years each girl could have worn something different.
The photo archives, what happened to them.Though it was great to see the photo of the four gals on the trolly in San Francisco and I worked with them, that made me proud.
One more thing, the Rockettes are a group, the individual photos bothered me,the magic is in the group of women.
Rockette Book.......2007-01-16
Was expecting a hardcover book but that is my fault b/c I didn't double check and just assumed it was but all in all it is a very neat book! I gave it as a Christmas gift to a friend that is auditioning for Rockettes this year and thought it would be a cute keepsake but again, it would have been a little nicer if it was a hardcover b/c I'm afraid that the edges will bend easily.
Rockettes ROCK!.......2007-01-10
I wish this book were 750 pages, because then more and more pictures of all the dancers could have been included! I got this very neat book for my thirteen year old daughter as a Christmas present, and she loved it! After seeing the Christmas Spectacular together at Radio City Music Hall a few years ago, the whole family loves the Rockettes. But no one loves them more than I do. I just have the biggest smile while reading this book as I imagine how the performances would appear in each of the many different costumes shown in this fun book! I especially like the way the dancers are presented individually, in a full-body portrait, as they model a variety of costumes from the history of their spectacular performances... its almost like being introduced to them all! The Rockettes ROCK! and if you are their fan, you'll really have a lot of fun reading this book.
Unflattering photos UGH!.......2006-12-27
As a former Rockette, this was at the top of my Christmas List. I couldn't wait to get my hands on it. Boy, was I disappointed. The vintage and candid photos are GREAT, but they are few and far between. The new photos of the Rockettes are horrible; the photos are poorly lit, their faces are shadowed, some of the poses look awkward and uncomfortable. I have worn some of these costumes and seen them up close, and this book falls way short of showcasing the masterpieces of Erte, Bob Mackie, etc...
I am shocked that Radio City Rockettes would approve such photos. Most of the new photos have REALLY BAD LIGHTING, and make the Rockettes look old, tired and the costumes dull.
I was surprised this book was photographed by an acclaimed photographer. With digital photography and photoshop being all the rage these days, I would have expected so much more.
I love the Rockettes and I am proud to have been part of such a legendary organization. I am disappointed that this book didn't showcase the dancers in the way in which they deserve.

Book Description
Galaxy groups and clusters provide excellent laboratories for studying galaxy properties in different environments and at different look-back times. In particular, the recent detections of high-redshift cluster candidates, only possible with the current high-technology instrumentation, add a new dimension to the problem. Along with the ever increasing computing power and sophisticated algorithms to model clusters of galaxies, it may help us to understand the origins of today's groups and clusters, as well as of their member galaxies. These workshop proceedings provide a snapshot of the current research in this subject, covering the observations, theory and numerical simulations relevant to galaxy evolution in groups and clusters. In this book, intended primarily to researchers in the field, particular emphasis is given to the recent impressive progress in the field, on important new results, and on the future prospects and open questions to be tackled.

I received my book in a lengthy time, and it was in excellant condition.
Book Description
Including practical advice and a list of accommodations for each day’s stage, this guide covers the increasingly popular Portugese Route.
Customer Reviews:
San Miguel Says............2007-06-27
Very thorough review if the Portugues Way. Will test it's accuracy next Spring. The French Way is much more frequented and pilgrim's catered for, so a good guide for this less popular walk is essential. John Brierley's work 'A Pilgrim's Guide to the Camino Portugues' will be my bible for the journey.
Superb -- this is all you need!.......2006-06-20
I used this book and the similar Fisterra book for my pilgrimage in April 2006. They are both superb. I followed Brierley's suggestions pretty much to the letter. The book contains excruciating details as well as a longer and spiritual view.
I think of the book as a personal gift to each of us pilgrims. Brierley obviously loves his work and the Camino. He kept me on track, put me to bed early and awake early when it was important, encouraged me to appreciate the wonderful people and sights along the camino. He offers history lessons, lists of practicalities, maps and directions. This book is all you need!
Excellent guide, colored maps, trail profiles, photos, accomodation guide.......2006-02-08
This guide follows the format of Brierley's Camino Frances guide: very pleasing to look at: glossy paper, colored photos almost every page, multicolor maps and trail profiles, parts of text set off by shading. It has the information the walker needs, where the alburgues are, how many beds, alternate choices. There is an introductory section with introduction, overview, followed by planning and preparation information. The main body of the guide follows, organized in 11 stages where each stage corresponds to a typical day's travel. Each stage has a map and a trail profile.
The planning section is very useful - detailed equipment list, travel info, essential phrases in Spanish and Portuguese and a short history of the Camino
.
This guide also makes a serious effort to address the spiritual or inner path side of the journey. In addition to the map and profile, each stage begins with three paragraphs - the Physical Path - a narrative overview of the day's walk, the Mystic Path - to awaken you to the spiritual potential of the day's walk, and Personal Reflections - a quotation from the author's reflections. In each stage there is a page with blank lines for the walker to write in their own reflections. The mystic path, and blank reflections page didn't work for me, but that is personal preference.
For me, the colored maps, elevation profiles and photos are the strong points of the book.
The Camino facilities change from year to year, and inevitably publications will have typos and errors of fact. Do future pilgrims a favor by emailing the publication's website if you find errors in the text.
a faithful walking companion........2005-07-11
As a frequent Camino walker, I have used many guide books. This book on the Portuguese Way from Porto to Santiago is a total "must" for a succesful pilgrimage.
The maps for each stage are clear, possible detours are included.
Also for each stage, contour outlines are given and the distances are adjusted for height.
Accomodations and restaurants are listed with phone numbers .
Description of each stage is broken down to "The Pratical Path, "The Mystical Path" and "Personal Reflections" Some might be skeptical about the last two but it adds an emotional factor to the walk, something I have not yet seen in any other guide.
Photo's are plenty. over 200 photos. The author suggest not to bring a camera because the photo's you need are already in the book. It saves weight......
With all the suggestions for planning of your trip, this guide will keep you on the right track.
Best guide I've seen.......2005-06-29
The "Camino Portugues" has managed to provide the most integrated and concise travel guide that I've ever come across (and I've used plenty). It manages to provide a complete picture of this lesser known pilgrimage route with an easy to follow step by step process complete with pictures and colorful maps. It loads up on all of this practical information and somehow doesn't become sterile. It's a great read as part of your pre-travel preperation. There are even places that I'm using for additional notes (reserved as "reflections" for those that want to use it as a summary journal).
There are no other updated English guides for this Camino, and as it turns out, with this book, you don't need any. It's the complete package.
Book Description
She's Not What She Seems
Shakespearean tragedy!
Jessica Wakefield has landed the starring role in Sweet Valley High's production of Macbeth, and suddenly she's too busy for anyone except Paula Perrine, a timid new transfer student who idolizes her. At first Paula spends all her time fawning over Jessica and helping her prepare for her role. But before long, Paula seems to be better friends with Jessica's crowd than Jessica is.
Jessica is pleased that her new friend is coming out of her shell, but when Paula falls to tell Jessica that she's been made her understudy, Jessica wonders if Paula is trying to steal not only her friends but her role as Lady Macbeth as well! No one else, not even Jessica's twin, Elizabeth, believes shy Paula could do such a thing. Can Jessica convince her friends of the truth before it's too late?
Customer Reviews:
All About Paula..............2003-05-19
Jessica Wakefield manages to snag a leading role as Lady M in the school's production of Macbeth.
At the same time, a new girl Paula, begins at SVH and quickly becomes Jessica's number 1 fan. Paula manages to infiltrate Jess's snobby clique and also become her understudy.
Jessica is more than happy to have someone at her beck and call and Paula seems more than happy to be this.
However, underneath Paula's meek and mild mask is a character who is just as devious as Jessica, in fact even more so, as she is planning on sabotaging Jessica's role and grabbing the lead for herself.
This book is strongly influenced by "All About Eve" but, is well worth a read and contains all the typical SV elements that makes the series so well worth reading, even if the books are pretty hard to get ahold of now.
encore!.......2001-08-03
This is a better Sweet Valley High book,in which a wicked girl is jealous of the amazing Jessica, and pretends to be shy and to be Jess's friends.Behind Jess's back, she is an extrovert who is planning to take Jessicas place in a shakespearan play.Jessica deals with this schemer in a noble fashion, and shines with class and dignity.
Jessica at her Dramatic Best.......2000-11-22
I first picked this book up in the sixth grade, when I'd first discovered the series. My passion for the theatre also began around that time, a combination which made this book the perfect match for me.
I can heavily relate to Jessica in this book too, seeing as I've had other actresses attemp to steal my leading role before.
Its a great read for rainy days, or just when you feel that urge to pick up a great SVH classic.
