Need some information on Internet access while abroad.......1999-09-15
We used your books to travel to Great Britain, Spain and Portugal in August '99. We found your books quite complete, except in one area. With the advent of Internet, more and more travelers abroad need to find places for access to their e-mail. "Internet Cafe"s are springing all over Europe, but none of your books mention them. These cafes are places that have computers available to the public, where for a nominal fee one can get an increment of time (1/2 hr., 1 hr. ...) to log on the Internet and access their e-mail or conduct any other business they need. We found these cafes in London, Barcelona, Lisbon and Madrid, but it takes some digging to find anyone who knows where they are. I am sure every major city in Europe has them, and it would be very useful if you could list some, or even mention that they exist and where to find information about them.
Could be a lot better.......1999-04-29
Uneven book. Too much detail in some cases (to see such and such turn left, then right, etc.), and not enough in other cases. Accomodation listings quite poor, with no mention at all of youth hostels, budget hotels, or alternate arrangements. No mention of important 1999 events, such as World Athletic Championships in Sevilla. In all, rather disappointing, and I wish I did not buy this book. I am now looking for another book that has more comprehensive accomodation listings.
Suggested itineraries, transportation, hotel info. all great.......1999-01-26
This guide is jam-packed with information about transportation, travel tips, restaurants, hotels, great itineraries and local customs, etc. My only complaint is that the book isn't better organized or at least more selective about the info. printed. You really have to work to decipher the truly important info. on sights, museums, etc. from the voluminous listings of hotels and restaurants. I also thought the writing style leans a little too much towards objective. As a first time visitor to Spain, I would benefit more from a more subjective discussion, even rankings of museums, sights, cities, regions, etc. about

Customer Reviews:
Inspiring, insightful book.......2001-11-27
If you have the "instinct" for working with children who have emotional and behavioral difficulties, this book is for you!! In the format of an experienced E/BD teacher's "thought journal," its short anecdotes touch your heart and remind you that even though sometimes your best is not enough, it's all that you can give these tough kids. I, too, keep this book within easy reach and give it to all my friends, student teachers and aides. (Additional suggestion: I also have been known to give it to those folks who don't "get it" in an attempt to bring out that empathy gene -- works well with administrators and grumpy regular ed teachers.) GREAT BOOK!!!
I am a brand new Behavior Disorders Teacher!!!!!.......2001-03-05
This book has brought me peace within the first part of my journey of educating emotionally disturbed teenagers. I am grateful to have purchased this book and read it every night before I go to bed. There are many things the author says that are just "food for thought". I find that these 'morsels' really apply in terms of dealing with my students. I recommend this book to ALL teachers, both new and veteran who work with emotionally disturbed children.
Insightful reading on a difficult subject.......2000-09-14
This is a book that is easy to read but has a lot of helpful information on a difficult subject. There aren't a lot of "answers" in this book but it gave me a lot of food for thought in dealing with difficult children.
Silly and not very useful.......2000-06-27
I'm amazed such a serious subject is given this cutesy treatment, but then, this is just the sort of book educators love to write. Nothing really practical here, just sweet little anecdotes about kids who fight over the swingset at recess and inner musings of the author on how much he "admires" the passion of abused children. The format is about one paragraph per page, so if you're looking for detailed instruction and explanation, this book ain't it (it's also a shameful waste of paper). A nice book for those who want to keep the subject clean and simple, but not recommended for those who desire real information or understanding. Silly and slightly insulting.
Excellent for All Teachers.......1999-12-01
This is an excellent book to have at your desk. I give a copy to every student teacher I supervise once they've completed their training with us. It's anecdotal format makes it easy to refresh yourself quickly and the information is useful for kids grades k-12. I highly recommend this book. It's the best $16.00 I've spent!

Close to Home.......2006-03-08
These 44 stories had me grinning, then chuckling, then laughing out loud so much that my wife and children wanted me to read it to them. We've spent the last several evenings reading these tales and have enjoyed them immensely. Callaway's style is not just funny, he has a point to every story. There were times I had to quit reading because I teared up, but more often I had to quit reading to laugh. This book has been such a blessing in our home. The book centers on the things that really matter and shows us that there's hope - something we as parents desperately need every single day.
Book Description
A woman's decision about what kind of childbirth experience she wants to have is central to her politics, identity, and personality. Today's moms and moms-to-be are better informed about their options than ever before, but, perhaps not surprisingly, they confront rigid judgment from women who choose a different path. Women who opt for home birth are criticized for being reckless—what if there's a medical emergency? Women who opt for elective C-sections are considered selfish—their life is so busy they have to schedule an appointment to give birth?
Deliver This! provides a thorough overview of today's options: home birth; birthing centers; vaginal birth in a hospital (with or without anesthetics); elective and medically necessary C-sections. Author Marisa Cohen, who delivered both her daughters in a high-tech hospital, is both engaging and curious in her quest to understand why women make alternative choices—and why they feel fiercely defensive about them. In interviews with over one hundred women, Cohen listened to the debates over the best birthing experience, and explored creative solutions that bridge seemingly conflicting goals.
Smart, appealing, and personable, Deliver This! is equally valuable for first-time moms and those who are pregnant with their second or third child.
Customer Reviews:
Great!.......2007-06-18
I bought this book when I was starting to think about and plan for labor. It does a great job reinforcing that a successful birth is one that results in a healthy baby. I had been reading books on natural child birth and so many of them seem to have the bias that a medicated birth or a C-section is a lesser experience.
Reading this book prepared me to expect the unexpected during labor and to not feel bad for asking for drugs or feel devastated in the event of a C-section.
The personal stories from women who have had babies all sorts of ways are a great resource when one is sorting through all the material out there.
Enjoy Your Baby's Birth and Do it YOUR Way........2007-05-01
Confused when friends tell you to "..just get the epidural as soon as you can.." while others are ecstatic over their "orgasmic" natural births? This book helps you sort out your options by using witty, judgement-free story telling as well as examining how and why women make the choices they make. Deliver This! is the perfect example of presuming that every woman is smart enough to follow her heart, gather the information or stories she needs to make her decision, and then decide what is best for her and her family. Marisa Cohen is an excellent writer and is able to take a values and judgement-laden topic and deliver her information without, well, values and judgement. Nice wit and humor as well. Fabulous!
Great, informative read.......2007-02-07
I'm not even expecting, but I thought this book was a great read. My husband and I are at the point of figuring out when to have a child, and a friend loaned us Marisa Cohen's book, "Deliver This." It sure opened my eyes to the world of birthing! I had no idea how many options were out there, and it was interesting to read from all different perspectives. I also enjoyed the writing of Marisa Cohen -- easy to read, easy to relate to. The closer we get to deciding when to have a child, I'm going to re-read this book.
Funny and reassuring.......2007-01-14
Since I am expecting, I figured I should figure out how I want labor to go. As far as I could find, this was the only book out there on childbirth options. The book was funny, I esp. enjoyed when the author told us she hissed like a demon at her husband before she got the epidural. She educates you about the options - the arguments for and against the options and reasures you that all will be ok. She also gives helpful tips about how and what to discuss with your Doctor, midwife, doula, etc.
Very informative - covers ALL the options without judgement.......2007-01-12
My wife and I are expecting twins this spring so we both read Marisa Cohen's book and found it extremely informative and engagingly written. There's really nothing else like it out there. And now I even know what a post-partum doula is! I will be miles ahead of all the other fathers-to-be at child birth class. Whatever decision my wife makes for her delivery, Ms. Cohen has given us the real scoop on all the available options, from all-natural home birth to elective C-section, and everything in between.

A teacher we can all learn from.......2005-07-25
I've had the privelege of not only reading this book, but working with the amazing teacher who wrote it. After reading this book every parent would want their child to have been taught by such a wonderful person.
A Must Read For All!.......2003-08-19
While the title and cover of this book may seem to speak to those in the educational profession, its messages reach much further. Whether you are a teacher, a coach, a parent, or someone just searching for an inspirational read, this book will touch your heart and inspire you to touch the heart of a child.
The life lessons and biblical references make this book a must read even for those who feel they have little opportunity to affect the lives of children. Through amusing and humorous everyday occurrences Hawley reminds us all of the way that God wants us to live each day.
Strikes a Chord.......2003-06-18
Steve Hawley's book is a collection of short stories that center around the question, "What then is this child going to be?" People at all levels of society have been and will continue to be interested in what will become of our children. Hawley's book shows that while the answers are different, many of those answers are profoundly influenced by teachers, family, and faith.
The author utilizes decades of experience as a son, brother, student, teacher, coach, and Christian in each of the 25 easy-to-read chapters. Each chapter contains observations based on individuals and/or events that affected that author. Hawley's passion for people and his keen perception is evident throughout What Then Is This Child Going to Be?. Perhaps the book's greatest strength is its ability to "strike a chord" with its readers in a number of ways-reflection, inspiration, humor, nostalgia, optimism, and wisdom.
As the author asserts in his acknowledgements--"this is a book about what we learn as we grow up." While told from one man's perspective, the book really does show what WE learn or can learn as we grow up and does so in a way that will leave you wanting to read it again and again.

Once, they had shared a love-but that love was now forbidden. For everywhere Travis searched he found dead ends-and dead men.... For Travis, Erin was his Christmas miracle. But now he'd placed her in danger... and there could be no silent night, no peace on earth, until he made her safe again

Book Description
There once was a king with a glorious castle and splendid clothes, and yet sometimes he felt lonely and sad. There once was a woman who sailed ships and found buried treasure in caves, but her heart yearned for something more. One day the two met and married. They ruled the castle hand in hand, danced through the nights, and went on adventures together. After some years they gave up their gold and castle for something much sweeter: a baby. Now they end each day with a warm, tender kiss, saying "What could be better than this?" With a perfect read-aloud cadence and luminous fantasy scenes, this book is a love-filled treat for the whole family.
Customer Reviews:
Perfect for New Parents: A Beautiful and Meaningful Book!.......2007-02-07
What a wonderful story! The talented and prolific Linda Ashman has created yet another family favorite: an imaginative and beautifully-written testimonial to the biggest adventure of all - parenthood. The illustrations are lovely and beautifully capture the excitement of the text. My son has enjoyed seeing himself through this book, as someone whose life and growth are such a joy to his parents that no experience "...could be better than this!"
I've given four so far as gifts and counting-- but..........2006-12-31
I love this book because it simultaneously shows a child that their parents had exciting and full lives before the child came along, and that the child is so very, very loved and wanted. The illustrations and text are lovely, and with the mother-to-be racing after pirates and rescuing the father-to-be prince, it gives a wonderful sense of equality and partnership between parents.
I have given this to several of my dearest loved ones, who had full and busy lives doing amazing and worthwhile things-- slaying the dragons and making the conquests of today through anti war protests, environmental advocacy, social work, librarianship, overcoming the hurts and dysfunctions every family seems to have, creating brilliant social and literary lives -- or who have full and rewarding gaming lives, slaying menacing creatures and going on quests in World of Warcraft.
I reckon it's perfect for parents to share with little ones about one year old to five years old.
Every parent is a hero to his or her child. I remember trying to get my mind around the idea of my mother and father when they were young, as the revolution of the fifties and sixties was going on all around them-- my mother seeing the Beatles as a teen, my father shipping off to Viet Nam, and then later navigating the waters of marriage, the social revolutions that continued in the seventies, creating a home, a roof over our heads, a safe and thinking childhood for their children. I remember taking every little thing I learned about each of them so very seriously as a small child, and now that I'm older and have some perspective on that time, for my family and for our society, it's even more interesting and precious to me.
Every parent works hard to slay the dragons of economic or emotional want as best they can. Every parent builds, or longs to build, a safe and lovely home where the family can enjoy each other. This book is a beautiful artistic rendering of the joy and hard work and adventure and desire and love that goes into parenting, whether by a two income working poor family, or a royal couple. It's an opportunity for parents to begin the work of helping children understand the social and emotional context into which they were born.
This is a gorgeous work, make no mistake, but I must voice my only complaint.
I implore children's publishers to finally get it, and make their heroes more ethnically diverse, and/or of mixed/indeterminate race, like the reality of our American and global society today, so that every child, not just white children, may look at a gorgeous work like this and see him or herself in the imaginative landscape, and begin to grow a love and understanding for every kind of beauty, not just caucasian.

Book Description
Tomorrow is not promised to any of us... We have heard that phrase time and time again, some of us leave our children money and a will with warm words but is that enough? I don''t think so. This book is my "goodbye" to my daughter. If I died right now, then this is what I want my daughter to know, about me, the situation between her mom and I, as well as life. I am her father, and there is much she should know. So much... I also wrote this book for any child who wants knowledge, the fundamentals. The rules in this book never change. This book is for all youth and parents, as well as my daughter. I hope you can appreciate the humor in it, as well as the lessons throughout. Tomorrow is not promised to any of us, and children are the future of this world. If you died today, what would you want your child to know?
Customer Reviews:
A MUST READ!!!.......2005-03-19
This book is incredibly ingenious!!! A man with undying love for his daughter writes a book for her. Can it get any better than that??? Well yes, it has all the elements of a great book: love, comedy, life lessons, sympathy and inspiration. It also is straightforward and very comprehendible. This book is one of those books that you won't want to put down just because you want to know what he has to say next. He gives us a window seat into his life. There are times where you would cry of laughter from not believe what just written, then there are times when you just want to cry because you can feel the pain in his words in your bones. This book is reaching and it grasped me mind, body and spirit. It teaches us that time is to short to take people and the important things in life for granted. Give all your heart to your passions. Love your children. Play with them. Imagine if you were unable to speak with them everyday or see them especially when they live five minutes away. That is what the author goes through, and in result to his situation he wrote a book. How many people can actually say there father wrote a book for them. I know I can't.
Here are the words from the back of the book.
