Really mediocre.......2007-05-17
This dictionary is intended for people who don't need a dictionary. It is just so poor, half of the words I look up I just don't find them.
OK... But could be better.......2006-05-08
I recently traveled to Mexico with this book, and with the small paperback edition of Webster's New World Spanish Dictionary. I found that the Random House one is surely a Spanish English dictionary that works both ways, It is a reasonable size to take on a trip (for me, I travel kinda heavy), and I don't have a major complaint, but I found the Webster's to be better, more of a joy to use (I'm not sure I can explain how it can be more of a joy to use, but that's the way it struck me), and it had some words more clearly and applicably defined.
No real complaints for this book, it's just "not the way Mother used to cook!"
Very happy with dictionary.......2006-03-16
I'm very happy with the Sp/Eng dictionary. It's just what I wanted.
Excellent Resource.......2000-12-03

Sorry its out of print.......2007-08-25
I've worked for nearly 6 years as an interpretor and 10 within the immigrant community w/trip to the DR, Venezuela, Costa Rica, and Nicaragua. This is a great dictionary for the backpack. There are obvious limitation based on its size. Its strongest when going from English to Spanish, largely b/c it offers alternatives to the generic stand in words. It has has a wide variety of medical and construction terminology (though hardly exhaustive). I translate primarily for Mexican, Guatemalan, Honduran, and Dominicans. I am very sorry this book has gone out of print.
Regarding those frustrated that it does not have enough Mexican spanish: 1.) I have yet to find a dictionary that addresses the myriad vocabulary of each Mexican state. Each state has a unqiue vocabulary that many other states do not understand. When I see a Mexican from Piedras Negras talking to someone from Jalisco I know there be a bount of confusion as to what means what.
2.) Mexico stands apart from the rest of Latin America. They are Mexican before they are Latin. The unique blend of Indian, Spanish, and German influences is what makes them Mexican. Their accent is different from Spanish to the point that even Guatemalan and Honduran have at times difficulty understanding them. This is a not an insult to Mexicans. Its simply to point out that they tend have an isolated vocabulary.
Very disappointing.......2004-09-06
I bought this book thinking it would be useful for my work with Mexican Spanish. I was amazed to discover that my very tiny University of Chicago Spanish Dictionary was frequently superior, although that book does not claim to be specifically tailored to Latin American Spanish. On the whole I found this dictionary to be very disappointing, lacking many commonly used words in Mexico and other regions of Latin America, and very often insufficiently explicit regarding the countries and regions where non-standard or non-European variants are used. I really wondered how the book was written; my impression was that it was a rather old dictionary spruced up with a pretty cover, new typeface and the hasty addition of some regionalisms. It's also much heavier than the U Chicago Dictionary. Despite my every effort to like the book, I feel I wasted my money.
Excellent small dictionary.......2003-02-23
I am not sure what the other reviewers were expectly for 6 bucks but at this price it is quite a bargain! It is excellent for looking up common mainstream words and i have seldom failed to find what i have needed to find in it. And yes it does give the part of speech for each word and example sentences for it too! It is cram packed with usful information and a must have for any beginner to intermediate learner of spanish. It is not the only dictionary you will ever need but it is a great start. For 6 bucks and what it offers it is a definite 5 star item!
Great idea, could be better executed.......2002-06-10
Never failed me, not once, on two recent trips to Mexico and the D.R., but from it's size it is clear that is lacking many entries. Also, each entry could use a few more usage examples, especially for those countries whose Spanish is most widely varied from Castellano.
It's a start.......2001-12-29
When I first learned of this dictionary, I was very enthusiastic. Finally, I thought. Well, not quite, gringo. See, the problem is that most dictionaries are not written for the vast majority of English and Spanish speakers. They utilize British English and Spanish from Spain. This is immensely frustrating as anyone can tell you when they looked up a word only to find their Mexican or Chilean or Venezuelan friends looking at them quizzically because they'd never heard of it. We need a dictionary that employs American English and Latin American Spanish. Why is that so hard? There are more than a quarter billion Americans and several hundred million Latinos. WAY more than Spain and England together.
Regarding this dictionary, it is acceptable for beginners and intermediate users, but advanced speakers will find that it simply does not have enough words or idiomatic expressions. If you want a quick reference to look up words, it's fine. But if you are looking for a REFERENCE as in an exhaustive list of all expressions regarding poner (for example), then keep shopping. What kills me is it that if Random House took this dictionary, expanded and deepened it, it would rock the house. But as it stands now, it's limited in what it can do for most bilingual speakers.

Muslim Child: Understanding Islam Through Stories and Poems
ASIN: 0773760164 |
Customer Reviews:
Must read.......2005-01-05
This book is a must read for every muslim child growing up in the West and for everyone who is trying to understand the American/Canadian Muslim experience. It truely captures the humanity of a muslim girl growing up in the west. it shows how she has the same problems most kids have, the bossy older sister and trying to be popular to how she feels outside because she is a Muslim and an Indian. every middle and high school in america should have this book on thier libraries shelf.
Amazing!.......2002-09-17
Hello All,
I just finished this scintillating story dealing with many issues that a young adult may face in school, in one afternoon. Yes one afternoon! I found the story so gripping that it was hard to put down. Not a young adult myself, I thank the author for showing me a way of understanding and developing empathy for what teenagers go through.
A must read for yourself and your kids!
the bully bites the dust.......2002-02-14
Well, I am not a young adult, rather a middling adult, and I very much enjoyed this book. In fact once I was past the middle, I couldn't put it down. Zainab's trials with peer pressure, belonging, friendships and siblings took me back to grade and highschool... very realistic and multifaceted. None of the characters are one-sided, and behaviour is not overly simplified (possible exception: the bully Kevin, who doesnt seem to have any redeeming features at all).Zainab's progression from desperate to please, to fully self-confident in one school year is a bit optimistic... but this book belongs on the shelf next to most adult non-fiction self-esteem books. The messages of being yourself, standing up for your values, forgiving oneself's little failings all come out clear, and in a non-preachy manner. The foreshadowing of abusive female/male adult relationships in the relationship between Kevin and Jenny(and the rest of his "harem") is rather ominous, as are the results of the abuse... realistically portrayed without being melodramatic. All in all a very engaging and worthwhile book.
Coming of Age in a Different Culture.......1999-12-19
Zainab is a 14-year-old with typical problems - the wrong jeans, a bossy older sister, a friend with big breasts. Add to that the drama contest, and she's up to her humming ears in problems. I loved this character - she's funny and flawed and trying to figure out how to deal with the world. Add to that her Pakistani background and Muslim beliefs, and the book becomes more than just a typical coming of age YA book. Her problems were relatable no matter what beliefs the reader might have, and yet her struggle to make decisions within the guidelines of her values made for a thought-provoking book. My 14-year-old and 11-year old daughters read the book, as well, and it provoked a real family dialog about tolerance, understanding and collaboration. Good story, with 3-dimensional characters and funny, realistic situations. I'd recommend it for middle and high school readers. (And as an adult, I enjoyed it, too.)
