This book is a must have for travelers, hobbyist, do-it-yourselfers,or anyone who wants to have a quick reference to a wide range of subjects. Just flipping through the pages is enjoyable.
PROS: This is an extremely well put together reference: portable, informative, broad-range of information.
CONS: None really, but the only thing I would expect it to have that is does not is a sign language alphabet chart.

I, incredulously, bought this book not expecting to refer to it because I know everything ( ;-P ). I have found that it a most invaluable resource. If you know (and love) Apache, this is the synopsis you need sitting on the left hand side of your keyboard.
Perfect volume for the price........2001-10-10
A large system of configuration commands and syntax is a useful and powerful tool for allowing people to easily control complex pieces of computer software.
Large configuration files have one major problem; you tend not to look at them often enough to get the language and syntax down pat. You find yourself making too many tiny errors in command name or syntax and struggle with one window editing the file and one or more windows open displaying the documentation.
With Apache I have this problem in spades. The configuration system may be well designed and the syntax as easy as possible, but most people will still struggle to keep every detail in their head. I know what I need to do, have a fair idea how to do it, but the details elude me.
That's where this little volume comes in immensely handy. I have several of O'Reilly's pocket references and find the PHP, Apache and Perl ones never stray far from my computer. This one provides a wealth of reference information packed into a small, inexpensive little volume. It has enough information about the exact name and sytax of the Apache configuration directives that I donýt need to go to a larger book or delve into the manual.
Oh, and for those that want this volume to lay flat. I ran my copy through a paper cutter and trimmed the spine off. After punching holes in the pages I then had a loose leaf version that allowed me to add my own pages of notes in various spots and lays perfectly flat. It only took a few minutes. Sorry, O'Reilly - but it is more useful if it can lay flat and being able to add notes is great.
Good info, good price, ok binding........2001-05-22
For material that's mostly already online, this book is a good investment. I get really tired of window-switching references, and sometimes I like to sit away from the computer while I'm looking up stuff on directive syntax or whatever. For that, this book is worth the price.
I'd still like a more suitable binding for a small book with a font chosen for density. Lord, won't you make me said book so it will lay flat? That would make this dealie a five-star pick for me.

This little book covers the latest version of Apache, and was packed with info for its size. If you're already familiar with other releases of Apache, then this is the perfect book for you - and all you'll ever need!
Finally ... just what an Apache admin needs.......2000-07-12
I own several pocket references on various topics, but this is the first one that I can say is truly helpful every time I've opened it. I no longer have to dredge up archived configuration files or hunt things down from other machines to find the syntax for an option or a trick I once used. This book is more than just bullet points and mnemonics; each command or configuration option has enough detail to set you on the right track if not actually provide you with the answers you were looking for. It certainly won't teach you how to administer Apache, but if you find yourself venturing to the Apache Project web site for reference very often, this book can save you those trips.

Poor editing on a book of this nature........2003-01-21
This book would get five stars,but, it has a fatal error in my opinion. On page 64 of I/O interfaces, it lists that USB 2 has a bandwidth of 480 megabytes(MB) per second, which should say 480 megabits(Mb) per second. It makes one wonder what other mistakes there are, and kinda defeats the purpose of this book. This book is to provide solid facts on the spot, when you need it. So if someone, not very tech knowledgable, needed vital data on the specifications of USB 2.0, they would be left with wrong information.

Could be much better.......2001-09-07
I am editing this review after having owned this book for several months to LOWER my original rating. I was originally disappointed because it was somewhat out of date. This disappointment has increased as I have realized that it has almost nothing of value to offer with newer equipment. In fact, I find that the only reason I ever reach for it is because I've made important notes in the flyleaves.
Original review follows:
Just got the "hot off the presses" 11th edition (hot as I write this anyway). While it's somewhat updated and the best yet, it leaves a lot of room for disappointment. Perhaps its time to replace the resistor color code tables with summaries of the IEEE and ITU standards, certainly someting more needed in the 2001 world of PCs. When was the last time anyone changed a resistor in a PC other than at the component manufacturer site? And it doesn't yet contain a power supply wire color code, which would be far more useful than resistor codes. There is info on Win98 but not on Win2K or ME (or even NT). The processor and socket list is expanded (long overdue) but still hopelessly out of date and incomplete (and wrong in at least a couple of places). Fixed disk drive lists are way behind the times with only the most minimal information to help keep the confusing IDE/SCSI/EIDE PIO 1/2/3/4/5 ATA33/66/100/133 drive, BIOS, MB chipset and cable standards straight.
This is a good book for troubleshooting, repairing and maintaining the older PC, but it is not even treading water well in a world of P4 or Thunderbird processors, multi-gigabyte drives or 400Mhz RIMM memory. Still, I have to give it four stars (would be 4.5 if Amazon allowed) because there simply is nothing better out there except keeping file folders full of manufacturer specs, white papers and web page printouts.

This is just what the title promises: a pocket guide. As such it is high class, printed on glossy paper and profusely illustrated with high quality color pictures taken in the field. It takes the reader through the several vegetation zones of Hawai'i and presents the noteworthy plants, category by category. I can well imagine that this booklet will give visitors to Hawai'i much pleasure.
I am not so sure about this "reading beforehand" the other reviewer mentions: this will be a pretty brief read. Also too concise to serve as a field guide, with pictures that are awfully small. It really is a pocket guide only, but as such it is a gem.
The guide you should have.......2000-06-18
A truly superb guidebook; it is the one you should have to make sense of the profusion of exotic flora on the Islands. Other books show small selections of the trees and shrubs, with the result that the particular one in front of you is often omitted. Pratt has solved the problem for us; his book is comprehensive, beautiful, and easy to use. If you are planning a trip to the Islands, I recommend getting this book ahead of time. There is so much worth appreciating, it is time well spent getting oriented ahead of time. This guide is sure to become a classic.

Extremely well written handbook I keep in the glove box for finding Drive-in's wherever we are at. Actually I consider this a great history book as well, capturing a disappearing piece of Americana, that lately, has seen increased interest.
Being a route 66 buff (having driven its length in Illinois and out west), this is a great addition to my collection of memorabilia.
Don't leave home without it!

This makes for a cute little stocking stuffer to give someone who is your best friend in life; not exactly something you'd want to give acquaintances. Like it the product description says, it is a pocket book and therefore is very small, small enough to put in my pocket.
Everything in the book is a play on the words. It uses 'Yule' in place of "you will'. For example "Yule always make loneliness a distant memory" and "If I have my wish, Yule grow old together with me".

This book has any technical information you could imagine using. I bought it for use in technical theatre where welding temperatures and material weights and other such info is important. But, heck, the EXTENSIVE measurement conversions at the back are useful around the house for cooking and even getting the right oil/gas mixture in my lawn mower. Every carpenter, geologist, mechanic, etc. must have this book!
