Customer Reviews:
dissapointing book.........2007-09-24
I was looking for a good lightning book and got this one because of the relativ good reviews. BUT BUT.. i dont even think the authors are pro photographers - just have a look at their web site - a joke!!. Anyway this is not a book with images done by them but by other pros. But it is their text, one must assume, made for every lightning setup and it is lacking everything. Just diagrams - sometimes with up to 9 umbrellas / heads for one shot without any further explanation. Totally waste of money - for learning; get cristopher greys " master portrait lightning".
Solid Book, Some Silly Setups.......2007-09-10
This is a good book, definitely not for beginners, and some of the setups shown are ridiculously overimplemented.
Ok book.......2007-08-03
This book is better to give you ideas and lighting help anything else. not techinical enough for me though.
Cool book!.......2007-01-19
This book is such a great way to find out how to shoot a wide variety of incredible portraits, with easy-to-understand diagrams and the equipment used listed. Gerat book to add to any portrait photographer's bag of tricks.
A wonderful book.......2007-01-10
I am delighted with the purchase of this book. It is more of a picture book with a photo outline of how each photo was created. It basically shows you how to set up the lights, background and camera for the effect you might desire. The great part about this book is that it can give one ideas how to improve portraits. I highly recommend this book as a good addition for your photo library.
Book Description
Photographing People: At Home and Around the World is the 6th volume in a series of instructional books first started by internationally acclaimed photographer Freeman Patterson. Here, Andr Gallant, Pattersons longtime teaching partner and co-author of Photo Impressionism and the Subjective Image, offers clear instructions for photographers who want to capture the free spirit of a child, the extraordinary life of a grandparent, or the mysterious draw of a stranger who compels the imagination. This edition features 100 stunning photographs with extended captions that include valuable technical guidelines for both film and digital photographers, and illustrates the superb craftsmanship behind beautiful photography.
Customer Reviews:
A little disappointing.......2006-04-08
This book is the sixth in the excellent series. with Freeman Patterson responsible for most of the previous volumes. "Photographing people" is aimed at the photographer without much experience. If this is you, you will enjoy the book. The photos themselves are certainly good, and the text covers all the common-sense issues encountered when photographing people.
If you are looking for a book that gives advice about complex lighting setups for portraits (eg multiple flash units and/or reflectors and diffusers), then this book is not for you. And personally I did not expect yet another book to tell me what kinds of camera equipment I need. This section covers roughly a third of the book.
Book Description
People always will be the most popular photographic subject, but dramatic advances in equipment, along with new images from the art world, are creating a revolution of possibilities even for beginners. Master the latest in technique and composition, through the advice of a world-traveling, award-winning expert, and capture images of people you never thought possible. Simple sequences, illustrated by breathtaking examples, take you through the new breakthroughs in the basics, from exposure and depth of field to controlling light and color. Communicate mood and perspective in photographing boisterous crowds, romantic and erotic scenes, and original setups nobody has seen before.
Customer Reviews:
A wonderful book on portraiture.......2006-03-13
This book has it all. If you are interested in a primer of photographing people, from travel portraiture to nudes. This book covers it. The author divides the book into various photography techniques and themes giving helpful suggestion and tips as he explains them. I would consider it a must have for you photo book shelf. Also the include photos are great and the paper stock of the book itself does the included photos justice. The book will tell you just about everything you ever wanted to know about photographing a person (as opposed to an object) and also give you some great ideas on directions you can take you photography in.

This is a well thought-out book with excellent photos.......2000-04-02
There are plenty of photography books out there, but one would expect a book from the Editors of Eastman Kodak Company to be special. This one is. There are well laidout sections on seeing humor, capturing moods, weddings, portraits, sports, children, as well as solid advice on film, lenses, filters, and lighting. This is a well thought-out book, with excellent photos on every page.

Customer Reviews:
Full of Creative Portraiture Ideas, but..........2005-10-16
I found the main text of this book to be rather repetitive and lacking in scope and depth. Most of the real meat is in the photo captions. The photos themselves -- which have a good balance between color and black-and-white -- show a staggering range of ideas for creative portraiture. The back cover blurb brags about the book being "packed with technical information [on] choosing cameras and lenses", but you'll be hard pressed to find anything on these topics. On balance, I enjoyed this book and learned a lot. Just make sure you study the examples closely and read the captions.
not too great.......2002-10-28
this book is not too good of a book. it has mostly black and white images and it does not have much of the basics. i highly recommend (if you like this author) john hedgecoe's new book of photography, and john hedgecoe's photography basics. if you want to try and read something different from him then you should read john hedgecoe's camcorder basics.
Good guide to getting started taking people pictures........2001-08-07
This is a very well illustrated and logically organized book about the art of portraiture and good snapshots by a master photographer-educator. I have read several books lately on photographing people, and this is the best. Others start out with an introduction and then take one to far-off places for a portfolio composed primarily of peasants and rustics of foreign lands. Many of these portraits are quite interesting and, if you travel a lot, very exciting. Hedgecoe doesn't do this. He sticks close to home for pictures of people whom we can relate to, albeit they're English. Can't have everything, I suppose. What's really missing and would be very worthwhile is how he goes about gaining access to his subjects, which are really quite varied - from English peasants to Queen Elizabeth II. Past immediate family members and a few friends, I find it difficult to find subjects, not having the credentials to gain access to celebrities and the rich and famous.I would like to read more on the human aspects of this.

A hidden gem.......2006-09-16
Lisl Dennis wrote this in 1985. On-location portraiture gives you a wonderful sense of the person in their surroundings. For example, a person with their collection of hats, or a little girl with her collection of dolls. There is even a portrait of Carly Simon with a great story about how Lisl got the shot for Town & Country magazine.
It has some great examples of how to bring out the person in their element.
For those situations where additional lighting is used, it has actual lighting diagrams, and most of the lighting setups use umbrellas (inexpensive) rather than fancy photo-strobe units.
A few of the images are too busy for my tastes, but that reflects the person in their element.
Topics Include:
Location portraiture
Styling elements
Personality of color
telling environments
still-live
creative composition
impromtu basics
thinking fast
...
kids
family
and many more...
A great gem for the price.

Amazing Adventures Of TINTIN.......2007-08-24
Since I was a little boy I liked to read TINTIN's adventures. Years later, that habbit hasn't changed at all.
reliable .......2007-03-11
I am satisfied first-time buyer. my seller agreed to mail my books to an alternative address. Kept in touch with me and kept me informed until I provided the address. mailed the books on time, and i am happy, so is my 13 year old. Thanks again, those books are not available in Trinidad and Tobago, they are great for reading.
A rich part of this bilingual Canadian's heritage.......2006-09-09
Among my very early memories is as one of several children sitting on the sloped lawn between two of my neighbour's houses, each of us reading a different story - and so, in no particular order - from "Les Aventures de Tintin." This was my introduction to the most extraordinary comics world ever created, a part of my French-language heritage, though the series has been translated into many languages including English. My goal with these reviews (one for each volume) is to explain to an American audience why Tintin is such a phenomenon in the rest of the world.
I'll be skimpy as to plot details so as not to give any spoilers. I won't even give the gist of the adventures. For those who don't mind spoilers, further details are abundantly available in other reviews or by simply Googling "Tintin." Any value judgements I give are, of course, subjective.
Volume 1: Tintin in America (1932), The Cigars of the Pharaoh (1934), The Blue Lotus (1936). This is the first instalment of my reviews of each of the seven volumes.
The seven-volume series contains 21 of the 24 adventures, omitting the first two -Tintin in the Land of the Soviets and Tintin in the Congo - and the last, incomplete one - Tintin and Alph-Art.
There is a leap forward from the Congo adventure with Tintin in America, further maturity with Cigars, and the series is in full bloom with The Blue Lotus. The first of the three is still amateurish and quite childish, but fun nonetheless; we see Chicago, Al Capone (the only appearance of a real-life character in the entire series, though Hergé does draw himself and some real-world people into the occasional panel, without giving them any identities), the plight of the Indians, and a ticker tape parade.
The Cigars of the Pharaoh introduces the recurring characters Rastapopoulos and the buffoonish Thom(p)son twins, gives us the first of the many mind-bending dream sequences in the series, and takes us to Egypt and to the India under the Raj (the story predates Indian independence) with a mystery that segues into the superb The Blue Lotus, which takes place in China under Japanese occupation. Already, after three adventures, children are enthralled by the exotic locations and adults are amazed by author Hergé's painstaking research and attention to detail.

Very good story for children and aldult as well

Customer Reviews:
Graphic SF Reader.......2007-09-03
Tintin ends up in yankeeland, and as soon as he arrives, runs afoul of your garden variety 1930s Chicago gangsters. They want to get rid of him, for sure.
Of course, he has to end up in the Wild West, where multiple tries to have him lynched don't work, let alone the dog. This allows him to get to the bottom of the plot.
Probably Tintin's weakest book.......2007-07-15
Tintin's third album, originally published in 1931, is probable the weakest in the series. The young reporter goes to an America that looks like the standard Amerika of the European left: set in Chicago and the American West, the country is a commercialized hell populated by gangsters (whose leader is Al Capone himself, the only time a real person appeared in the whole series), greedy capitalists, uncultured rednecks and exploited redskins. As in the early albums, Tintin seems to escape from sure death at almost every page. Still, for those who accuse early Tintin books of being extremely right wing, it's interesting to see in page 29 how the expropriation of Indian lands for the exploration of oil is denounced. Also, in page 41 there is a very amusing satire of proto - radical environmentalism, as an old lady that is a member of an animal protection organization protests a mountain lion attacking a deer.
I love Tintin.......2007-05-13
Huge childhood fan of these books - they're even more comical when I read them now.
Dumb, camp or fun?.......2007-04-04
When I read this Tintin as a child I thought it was pretty dumb, especially (ARRGH!) that Wild Western-style lynching. Surely they didn't do things like that in America in the 1930s. Only the poor Negroes got lynched by that time.
Looking back at the book I found it more enjoyable. The lynching still aggravates me but it gets hilarious when the first man fails to lynch Tintin twice and they fall over themselves to do it. The plot gets silly and contrived in places but it seems to have an appealing camp quality. And I really love the scene when Tintin is rescued in the nick of time from being run over by the train. That is my favourite scene from that book.
However I like the Nelvana adaptation much better than the original book. The plotting is much tighter, focussing on the gangsters. Much of the silliness has been cut out. And I am very glad they deleted the Blackfeet tribe and (thank goodness!) the lynching.
Weak early work........2007-02-28
Herge, Tintin in America (Methuen, 1932)
The first of the canonical Tintin works (the third written; the other two, out of print for decades, are finally being brought back into print in 2007), Tintin in America has served since the forties as an introduction to Tintin and Snowy for generations of fans. It's an odd little volume, not as smooth nor as funny as the later works got, and it still contains some pretty nasty stereotypes (the reason those first two adventures have been out of print for so long) about ethnic minorities as part of the background humor. If you're a Tintin completist, obviously, you'll need a copy of this one, if you've never read it; otherwise, I'd suggest starting with one of the later adventures and coming back to this one once you're already a fan. ***
Book Description
Tintin is a world famous series with 75 years of staying power! It has influenced generations of comic artists. These Spanish editions feature some of Tintin's most memorable adventures! In La oreja rota, a museum statue has been stolen, and then returned. But Tintin realizes that the returned item is a fake and that there is a deeper secret behind the robbery. His investigation into the mystery of the missing statue leads him on an adventure in South America. In El secreto del unicornio and its sequel El tesoro de Rackham el rojo, Tintin joins Haddock and Professor Calculus on a hunt for pirate treasure, with the aid of a shark-shaped mini-submarine.
Customer Reviews:
A breath of naive air.......2007-03-23
Since this is the Spanish version of the "Broken Ear" (L'Oreille Cassée), this review will go in Spanish.
Cinco estrellas bien merecidas.

Tintin catches gangsters in the big city and the wild west.......2004-11-23
Tintin and Snowy are kidnapped by Al Capone immediately after arriving in the United States. Of course they escape - and spend the rest of the book rounding up gangsters. They chase Mr Smiles from the big city to an Indian reservation and through the wild west, so you get a good variety of American adventure landscapes. Finally they return triumphant to the city and Snowy gets kidnapped. There is a sequel so you know things end happily.
This is probably my favorite Tintin book. It has a lot of ironic moments: in the first pages of the book Tintin succeeds in catching Al Capone but no one believes him, the discovery of oil turns wilderness into big city in a matter of hours, and an animal rights activist is upset that a puma is eating a deer in the wild.
Tintin comics are good for reading at a German 2 level, if you are reading this to help learn German. There are a lot of words that aren't basic vocabulary (like "indian reservation") but it is still easy to follow the story because the writing and pictures tend to reinforce each other.
Deschalb seht man viele amerikanische Landschaften.
Entschuldigung fur mein Duetsch.
quite okay.......1998-07-24
This book is quite interesting but compared to the others which are realistic, I feel Tintin has a lot of narrow escapes and strangely escapes unhurt in every one of those which are not too realistic. The time he escaped from a sealed off cave through the passage of oil is too lucky and doesn't happen often, considering that Tintin stories are almost believable. Herge's reason for the stoppage of the train that almost killed Tintin, was a very remote one. I still cannot understand how Snowy could talk to Tintin in the beginning.

For American students of Chinese, I don't recommend Tintin as a way to practice Chinese. In this case there is a whole lot of manga available and trying to find videos in Chinese with Chinese subtitles may be a better way to practice. That said the story here is nice and I like this comic so reading it for fun is not a bad plan.

It has a lot of ironic moments: in the first pages of the book Tintin succeeds in catching Al Capone but no one believes him, the discovery of oil turns wilderness into big city in a matter of hours, and an animal rights activist is upset that a puma is eating a deer in the wild.
Tintin comics are good for reading at a Spanish 2 level, if you are reading this to help learn Spanish. There are a lot of words that aren't basic vocabulary (like "Indian reservation") but it is still easy to follow the story because the writing and pictures tend to reinforce each other.

Customer Reviews:
Tintin catches gangsters in the big city and the wild west.......2004-12-06
Tintin and Snowy are kidnapped by Al Capone immediately after arriving in the United States. Of course they escape - and spend the rest of the book rounding up gangsters. They chase Mr Smiles from the big city to an Indian reservation and through the wild west, so you get a good variety of American adventure landscapes. Finally they return triumphant to the city and Snowy gets kidnapped. There is a sequel so you know things end happily.
