    Book Description

Have you ever asked yourself. . .

    - Why should I wait for marriage to have sex?

    - How far is too far?

    - How do I say "no"?

    - What if we really love each other?

    - How do I find the right spouse?

    - How do I start over?

    - What about safe sex?

    - How do I know if this is love?

These days, virgins may be embarrassed by their lack of "experience" while non-virgins may feel that it's too late for them. Men and women of all ages feel compelled to "take their relationships to the next level" - meaning they think it's time to have sex, not to try on wedding rings. Chastity author and speaker Jason Evert addresses these issues, and dozens more, in "If You Really Loved Me: 100 Questions on Dating, Relationships, and Sexual Purity."

The questions in this landmark work are the most common ones Evert is asked when speaking about the virtue of chastity in hundreds of Catholic, Evangelical Christian, and public schools. His humorous, friendly, and blunt approach opens hearts and minds to a topic often either rejected out of hand or misunderstood.

Teens will find this book a useful guide to starting a relationship, deciding one's vocation, one day finding a potential spouse, and maintaining purity - without forsaking love. This book will give parents and educators new insights to help teens know the difference between love and lust. They may even look at their own lives differently, because as Evert explains, chastity is not only for singles; married couples must practice this virtue as well.

"If You Really Loved Me" gives readers straight answers to tough questions. Addressing the relationship issues that today's young people face, Evert explains the often-misconstrued virtue of chastity - not as a rejection of human sexuality, but as an affirmation of authentic love.

5 out of 5 stars A must-read for every teenager, and every parent of teenagers!.......2007-07-23

Jason approaches sexuality from a biblical perspective with such respect and insight. Every question is real, every answer full of compassion and wisdom, straight from God's word. We're building a purity class based on this and his video. Both are worth every penny.

5 out of 5 stars If You Really Loved Me: 100 Questions on Dating, Relationships and Sexual Purity.......2007-01-17

I gave this book to my 22 yr old daughter and she really loved it. There are some very good analogies in this book and the author has a very gifted style of writing. HE is also a great speaker. His style is very entertaining and insightful.

1 out of 5 stars End the Pain.......2007-01-04

I couldn't stand this book. I strongly disagree with some of the things he says.

5 out of 5 stars The answers to "why...".......2006-12-13

As a "cradle catholic" I always heard "no..." but I never got the "why". As you get older (esp. with hormones in the mix) it gets harder to follow rules when you don't know "why". Deep down we know right from wrong but his book puts into words what we all know to be true in our hearts. The author has a great way of directly answering questions that you have always wondered about but didn't know who to ask. He clearly answers the questions and backs it up with several sources. I gave a copy to all the young people in my life, including my brothers who are 17 and 21 years old. This book would be great for parents trying to find the words to explain all the "no's". I think that his book is also a "must read" for anyone who would like to date or have a happy marriage. (Everyone!) Get two or more copies...you'll want everyone to read it.

4 out of 5 stars Good Research but too conservative.......2006-01-31

It was a very good read but leaning to an extremism that borders on pre-19th century thinking. Dont get me wrong I agree with most of what the author says but it is also important to take on these issuses on a more progressive, modern way of thinking. Regardless, this is still a must read for everyone seeking to deepen in their personal sexual maturity.

    Book Description

There was only one way to please her father: Murder his wife....

David Brown was the consummate entrepreneur: a computer wizard and millionaire by age thirty-two. When his beautiful young wife was shot to death as she slept, Brown's fourteen-year-old daughter, Cinnamon, confessed to killing her stepmother. The California courts sentenced her harshly: twenty-four years to life. But in the wake of Cinnamon's murder conviction, thanks in part to two determined lawmen, the twisted private world of David Brown himself unfolded with astonishing clarity -- revealing a trail of perverse love, twisted secrets, and evil mind games. A complex and often dangerous investigation suggested a horrifying scenario: Was the seemingly bland David Brown really a stone-cold killer who convinced his own daughter to prove her love by killing for him? A man who turned young women into his own personal slaves, who collected nearly $1 million in insurance money, and married his dead wife's teenage sister, David Brown was a sociopath who would stop at nothing...a deadly charmer who almost got away with everything.

5 out of 5 stars Truly Exceptional Book.......2007-10-03

This is a tremendous book by Ann Rule-- a complete true story. I am from Garden Grove, and my father's parents were the first owners of that home on Ocean Breeze where Linda Brown was shot. My family had owned it from the mid-50s and had moved out in the early 70s-- but many of the same neighbors remained through 1985. Some of which are mentioned in the book.

This is a must-read. There was a "made for television" move about these events, called "Love, Lies & Murder," but it is NOT based upon Ann's book.

If there's ever "just one" of Ann's book I would recommend, it would be this one, "If You Really Loved Me."

5 out of 5 stars Sinking to the depths of what real monsters can do.......2006-12-24

Every now and then I pick up one of Ann Rule's true crime accounts. I like figuring out puzzles, and mystery novels are especially tempting as they let me try to figure things out on my own end of things. But true crime books have an additional factor to them -- I enjoy seeing the monsters that inhabit the world around us get justice, and sometimes it helps to know that I am not alone in my own little pocket of misery.

If You Really Loved Me dips into the psychology of a family, and the man who was the head of it. To all appearances, David Brown was an ordinary looking fellow, overweight, acne-scarred, but very successful. He had developed a means of rescuing lost data from computer disks right at the start of the big computer boom of the eighties, and had made quite a bundle of money. His home was in an prosperous part of Orange County, California, and his marriage to Linda Bailey was a happy one on the surface. They had a newborn daughter named Krystal, and he had invited not just his daughter from a previous marriage, Cinnamon, but also Linda's sister, Patti, to live with him. The home was tidy and well-furnished, and the two teenage girls were average, high-spirited girls, especially Cinnamon.

But on a March night in 1985, Linda died from two gunblasts in her chest. David Brown had gone out for a drive, and had come home to Patti crying and holding the baby, and Cinnamon was nowhere to be found. EMTs and the police came, and Linda's life could not be saved. And a search revealed Cinnamon huddled in a doghouse in the backyard, covered in vomit, and clutching a note scrawled on a piece of cardboard.

Dear God, please forgive me, I didn't mean to hurt her.

To everyone involved, the solution appeared very clear -- Cinnamon was tried for the murder and sentenced to twenty-five years to life, and only fourteen years old, was sent to prison. Life returned to normal for the Browns, and Patti stayed with David Brown, raising Krystal, and eventually giving birth to a child of her own, Heather.

But to the police and prosecutors involved in the case, there was something a little too smooth about the murder. And there was something about Brown that bothered everyone -- but the only way to reopen the case would be if Cinnamon spoke, and for nearly four long years she remained silent. Then one of the original investigators, Jay Newell, recieved a phone call, and the truth began to be slowly uncovered...

It's a chilling tale of mental and emotional abuse, murder for hire, manipulation and the man who was at the center of it all. Using interviews, photographs, and transcripts of the case, Rule gives a glimpse into a family that was deceptive, and with David Brown as the man who ran it all. He was charming, and would marry no less than six times, usually to very young women, and each marriage would fail in some respect. What was most disturbing was just how close David Brown came to getting away with everything -- investigators discovered that he would run insurance scams, make grandiose claims, and always seemed to find someone else to blame for everything that was questionable in his life.

For me, the hardest thing to read what Brown did to his own daughter, and the abuse he put Patti through. Out of all of his women, it was these two teenagers that went through the most trauma. Brown viewed women as things, put on the earth to gratify him sexually, and it didn't matter if they were preteens or not -- it was these sections of the book that made me physically ill, and helped me to recognize that predators lack the moral integrity that stop most of us from acts of terrible horror.

While Rule does get a bit repetitive in her account, the story is compelling enough to continue reading through to the end. She delves into the psychology of a sociopath, the hell that survivors of abuse go through, and the lives of the lawmen who worked to bring justice, finally to Linda Bailey and Cinnamon Brown.

This is not a book for children of any age to read, and that would go to most adults that I know. The violence in this is particularly disturbing, made all the more so in that it actually happened. For me, the hardest part was to read about the words and actions that Brown used to control the women in his life -- my own mother and grandfather would use very close to the same phrases to twist my own thinking into believing that what they were doing was my fault, not theirs, and there were times when I had to set the book down and walk away for a while to get my own equilibrium back. Despite this, it helped me to understand more of what I had gone through personally, and so, that made the book worth reading.

Rule is able to stay detached from her subject in this, and lets the reader decide guilt or innocence on their own. One thing that I appreciated was that she included several afterwords to update the readers on what happened to the Bailey-Brown families and the others in the story after the trials were over. There is also an insert of black and white photos of the people and places in the story as well.

If you have a strong enough stomach to deal with the crimes that Rule brings to life here, go on ahead and read. But I would not let this book be read by a child, or anyone who is emotionally sensitive to this sort of thing. Handle with care, and it still gets five stars from me for the writing and the skill that Rule uses to bring this story of evil to life.

    Recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Sick, Sick, Sick.......2006-12-19

I can't believe that David Brown really did this to his daughter, his own flesh and blood!! He manipulated his 14 year old daughter into killing his wife so he could collect the insurance money!! There are no words to describe how demented this "man" really is. Then he tried to have his daughter killed from prison! Unbelievable! This "man" deserves to rot in hell for all eternity~

5 out of 5 stars I remember this book like it was yesterday..........2006-11-20

I read this book about 7 or 8 years ago and i recently made an account on Amazon and i can tell you this book was one of the best books i have ever read about. I remember this entire book like i read it yesterday! What Cinnamon Brown went through as a pre-teen...the manipulation, the pressure she had on her and then to have to go to jail for this man, David Brown was just absoultly sick. I couldn't believe with the pressure she was put under by Brown that she would have to do any time at all and was repulsed when i read on and found out what they gave her. She is free now but still. It must have been hell on a kid that was practicaly forced to do something like that to someone she had to secretely love, and we know as a child she secretely loved her step mother.

    Shocking, sad and unfortunatly...so true...

5 out of 5 stars An evil mind, devoid of conscience, full of evil to the brim.......2006-11-06

    By: Marisol Cervantes (Real Name)
The story of a man who suffered in his childhood but made anyone he met pay for it, especially young girls, especially his own first daughter at fourteen; anyone who ran into him had to suffer for it. A masterful recount, psichologically deep, and recreation of how complete lack of conscience ravages and defiles everything in his way, treading ruthlessly on innocent lives. Unbelievable as it may seem, this convoluted tale of evil defies any master thriller writer, and Miss Rule creates the ambiance that goes with it, the anguish those girls had to live, many times from their very infancy. I must say, to write this review I cheated a little, saw the end of the afterword (to this morning I've read three fourths of it), of course I'm not telling. Suffice it to say that at this moment I have a lot of translation work to do, and I've been sneaking to this book for a week to see what continues to happen... I'll only say if I were an authority in Orange County, the criminal would certainly be gassed, or hang, or whatever it is they do in California. But I'm not telling if: she?, he? it? hung.
A masterful reconstruction of an evil mind, full of evil, devoid of conscience.

The author tries to portray Lauren refusing to give up her abstinence, but the line is drawn WAY TOO FAR!!! Though the book was well written, I hated it because the author doesn't really prove her point because Lauren is barely a "technical virgin". If you are a parent wanting to get this for your teen daughter, DON'T!!! It's a bad influence.

I THINK THIS BOOK CAN GUIDE TEENS TO MOTIVATE THEM TO WAIT UNTIL THEY ARE MARRIED TO HAVE SEX. THE BOOK OVERALL IS A GREAT BOOK I THOUGHT IT WAS A GREAT GUIDE FOR TEENS.

      5 out of 5 stars GREAT.......2001-10-15

I thought this book was great. I read it when I was 13, and at the end ( I wont tell what happens) I cried. I could not believe Tyler did that to Lauren! But I think its very realistic and it made me want even more to wait for sex

4 out of 5 stars This book is alright!.......2000-10-11

I think this was a really good book. I think that Lauren did the right thing by waiting and I also think that she should forget about Tyler he is no good. I just wanted to say if you read this book you might be kind of dissapointed in the end it leaves you wanting more!

2 out of 5 stars true to life, but kind of cheesy.......2000-09-29

This book hits home for most girls as we all grapple with the issue of sexual relations before marriage. But, it seemed as if the author was trying *too hard* to be "hip" and "cool" and use slang that kids use now days. Nice story line, but a little more than a tad cheesy for my taste. In some areas, it was so cheesy it was painful while other times it flows along nicely. An okay read if you need to (I read this title for a report on STDs and teen sexuality) but I definitly wouldn't recommend this.

5 out of 5 stars Informative delivery of a horrific crime........2006-10-27

The subject matter was so horrific that I just had to buy this book. I read it from cover to cover in one day. I feel the author gave a well-rounded account of what happened. There was no need to sensationalize as the facts alone were almost incomprehensible in and of themselves. Of the greatest interest was the author's inclusion of a question and answer section, done in letter form, with one of the girls. Sadly, the other girl was unable to participate as she was still a minor at the time this book was written. I believe that this story will always stay with me. Even 20 years from now I will still be interested to see if either of the girls are released. Buy it. Read it. It will leave you wondering "Why?" There really didn't seem to be an explanation of this brutal act. This is what leaves you unsettled. Good Job!

2 out of 5 stars Missing Real Depth.......2006-09-14

"If You Really Loved Me" was a somewhat disappointing read. While the true crime story itself was somewhat unusual (two teenage girls kill the grandparents of one girl so that they can continue their lesbian relationship)and certainly should have provided an interesting and in-depth read, something was missing from the story. The author, Kevin McMurray, does provide some background information on the victims, Carl and Sarah Collier, but mainly over the course of a page or two. I found similar treatment on the background of the two girls, Holly Harvey and Sandy Ketchum. Maybe it was this skimming that caused the book to feel so lightweight, but I felt that McMurray really cheated the reader, and the Colliers, by providing such skimpy detail. We can understand that together the two girls made an explosive combination, but what exactly drove them to kill?
An additional issue I had with this book was Mr. McMurray's seeming sympathy toward Ms. Harvey and Ms. Ketchum about midway through the book. Reading of such gruesome murders, and committed against the people that cared for and reared Ms. Harvey for much of her life, I had absolutely no sympathy for either teen girl and I found it angering that Mr. McMurray seemed to have more for them than for the people they killed, or even the Colliers' son.
All in all, what could have been an interesting read into the dark and depraved minds of two teenage girls, and their violent outcomes, was instead more like a People magazine read. Disappointing.

1 out of 5 stars This book is too confusing.......2006-08-03

My wife is the big true crime reader. I read mainly fiction. And since this crime happened about 30 miles from where we live I thought I would surprise her and give her this book. She handed it back to me the next day and told me it wasn't any good. She told me to read it and I would know why. She was right. This book was very confusing, in that it jumped around a lot. I found myself having to look back through the chapters to keep up with who was who. I had hoped the author would have gone into the psychology of the criminals, but he kept to the surface material which was a little more than found in the newspapers. Like the other people who gave their reviews, I would not recommend this book as a good true crime book. I guess I've learned my lesson. It's best to stick with writers that you know something about.

        1 out of 5 stars A Huge Disappointment.......2006-07-06

I live in the Atlanta area and followed this story in the newspaper. When I heard a book was being written about it, I was excited. Finally, I would get all the facts of the case, I thought, but I was sadly disappointed. The book
reads horribly, it is confusing, and leaves a lot of unanswered questions about the realtionship between Holly Harvey and Sandy Ketchum. At times, the author is critical of the police and Bruce Jordan, then he is praising Jordan. The author should have divided his story into two sections: Before he talked to the lawyers and after he talked to the lawyers. It seemed as if his opinion and the story's perspective changed drastically after he talked to the lawyers. Save your money, and wait for a better book. Right now, I am reading An Hour To Kill by Dale Hudson, and highly recommend this book. Good story, good author!

3 out of 5 stars Something Is Missing.......2006-07-05

This book does not offer anything from the eyes of Holly Harvey or Sandy Ketchum. Surely these two had strong feelings for each other, and there really didn't seem to be any good reason for why they were separated in the first place. The book fails to mention that girls can fall in love with girls and it has nothing to do with not having boyfriends, or showing signs of trouble. They were 16 and 15 years old and that is a typical age for teens to date, have sex, smoke or drink. I think that if the book would include the relationship from the girls' perspective, the reader woulld be more likely to see what may have been going through their minds. I did not think it was right to separate them just because their relationship was a lesbian one. Does that mean the grandparents deserved to die? - NO!! There is no excuse for the heinous crime they committed. I think that the reader should be given an opportunity to get a good understanding of the people who are involved, and I do not feel that this was achieved in this one-sided view of the crime.
