Book Description
This title of Michelin's Green Guide covers two regions in one volume. The plains, hills and fields of Burgundy roll westward from the Loire to the celebrated vineyards stretching from Dijon to the southern hillsides of Beaujolais. Echoes of the Middle Ages are found in superb Romanesque churches and the heritage of the Great Dukes. The Jura mountains encompass deep forests, sparkling rivers, lakes and cascades, winter resorts ideal for cross-country skiing. Besancon and Belfort citadels reflect the struggle for supremacy over the eastern border of France, the historic Franche-Comte.
Customer Reviews:
Michelin Green Guide is still a most useful companion.......2000-03-13
Michelin Green Guides were the first guide books to be published about specific regions in France. They still are (for how much time?)useful for people who cannot spend too much time in Bourgogne or Jura. Michelin Green Guide is still valuable. Especially when you visit Burgundy and Jura. Both famous areas for gourmets from all over the world. Because Michelin forged its reputation on restaurants, it is wise to use both Michelin Red Guide 2000 Edition for France and the local green guide for Burgundy and Jura. Those who plan a visit to Switzerland should also buy it. Jura is the other side of the Leman Lake. By the way, some of the most beautiful Alpes and Mont-Blanc landscapes can be viewed from the Jura slopes above Geneva. Because they are concise; because they have explicit propositions Michelin are always to recommend to the one-day or two-days visitor.

Sixteen-year-old Margaret Rose Nolan, newly arrived from Ireland, finds work at New York City’s Triangle Shirtwaist Factory shortly before the 1911 fire in which 146 employees died.
Sixteen-year-old Rose Nolan and her family are grateful to have finally reached America, the great land of opportunity. Their happiness is shattered when part of their family is forced to return to Ireland. Rose wants to succeed and stays in New York with her younger sister Maureen. The sisters struggle to survive and barely do so by working at the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory. Then, just as Rose is forming friendships and settling in, a devastating fire forces her, Maureen, and their friends to fight for their lives. Surrounded by pain, tragedy, and ashes, Rose wonders if there’s anything left for her in this great land of America.

The main reason to read this book would be to pique your interest in the time period. You will learn a lot about immigration in the early 1900's, the Triangle Shirt Waist Fire, sweat shops, life in New York. The story doesn't have much of the ring of emotional authenticity. I don't doubt that the author's facts are true and her topic is well-researched, but I don't get much of a deeper understanding of who these characters are and why they behave the way they do. I have the sense of the author behind the scene pulling the strings to make the story turn out the way it does. The parallels drawn to 9/11 are eerie, but the fire was a very different event.

In the book Ashes of Roses, by Mary Jane Auch there was a family of six comng to america from ireland in 1911 and when they got to america the youngest of the four children is diagnosed with an eye illness and is not allowed to comce to america, so the father takes him back and the three girls and the mom stay in americ, then the mom get homesick and takes the youngest daughter with her back to ireland and leaves the two oldest girls in america on their own. The two sisters make it through the teriangle waist factory fire and lots of discrimination torwards them. This book is an overall book of loving sisterly kindness, and i would highly reccomend it for readers of all age.
Ashes of Roses.......2006-05-15
Ashes of Roses is a very interesting book. It has lots of historical reference to the Ellis Island immigration period, and is very well written.
The main character, Rose Nolan, makes the long voyage with her family to New York City from Ireland. It is a terrible, harsh voyage, and when they finally arrive, are forsed to make a horrible descision. The baby boy of the family is examined, and found to have a minor disease called Trachoma. Her father must take him back to Ireland, and Rose and her sister and mother are left to fend for themselves in the city.
When they arrive at their uncle's house, it is made very clear that they are unwelcome. His two daughters act snooty and spoilt, and I can feel Rose's anger and pain as if I were actually there with her. She is forsed to maintain a painstaking job making paper flowers for little pay just to help her small family get by.
A very nice book, but it drags on a little in certain parts. Over all, I would reccomend it.
Ashes Of Roses is one of the greatest books out there.......2006-02-04
Rose is the main Character of Ashes Of Rose. Rose is the oldest of 4 kids in her family Maureen, Bridget, and the Baby boy Joseph. Yes of course sense she's the oldest she had to take care of the all of the kids when her parents are gone or even there but and busy. When they get into America they have to go to through test and the baby Joseph has a dieses called Trachoma and Pa has to take him back to Ireland to live with the grandma and when he's better that they can come back and bring him to live in America. Pa and Joseph come back a moth later. Rose is 16 and works at the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory. She has to have a job to help keep the house and everything they had by getting the money and the family needs. Rose hasn't been living in America for a little while now but still misses everything from Ireland. Just to add on to missing everything and wanting to go back the Triangle Factory catches on fire and everything inside is gone. Rose is strong enough to realize that she couldn't have done anything about it and that she has to go on with her life and just remember all the good things that happened in the time of her life. So Rose goes out and try's to find a new job. Rose and her family are getting back together because her baby brother and dad are back in the United States and back to see them, because when they came to America Joseph couldn't get in because he had a dieses called Trachoma. Realizing it has only been a month they can't wait to see Joseph and Pa. Now knowing that the family can come back together Rose is happy again and is glad to still be living in America. If you want to read a great book and feel like you have gone through and the stuff Rose has then I would recommend the book Ashes of Roses by Mary Jane Auch.

A Rose From the Ashes
by: J.N. Graham
Sometimes a novel touches your soul. The scenes are real. Your senses awaken. You can smell the aromas and feel the warmth of the rising sun as it shines on your skin.
A Rose From The Ashes is such a book. J.N. Graham takes the reader back to pre-Vesuvius Pompeii in A.D. 79. Within the pages the reader meets rich and poor, slaves and free, believers in Christ and non-believers. The struggles the characters face will touch with familiarity. The world may have changed, people may have changed, but the trials of love and faith are timeless.
Fabia Crescentius, young, creative and independent is already considered an old maid at nineteen years old. She is a painter of frescos in a society where a woman has no stature and certainly is not encouraged to pursue art. She finds faith through tragedy, love through faith and abundant blessings through following Christ in a world where that also is unacceptable. And as Vesuvius erupts and destroys all that she knows, she finds faith grown stronger in desolation. Her faith and her love bring beauty in devastation like a rose growing out of the ashes.
J.N. Graham painted a beautiful word fresco in the characters of this story. She blended history, faith and romance into a picture in the heart of the reader. A picture of God's abundant life even in the midst of destruction. By the end of the book you realize the fresco of your life is made more rich for the timeless Truth in the pages.
This is a rich historical romance. Clear your calendar, you will be drawn into the story on page one and not want to put it down.
Customer Reviews:
An Extremely Well-Written Mystery.......1999-07-02
The first thing I look for in a mystery is a well-crafted character; I find this in the works of the greats: Raymond Chandler, James Lee Burke and Walter Mosley. The second is a believable and absorbing atmosphere; again, one finds these in abundance in the works of these writers.
Karen Rose Cercone is now another author I can add to the list. "Steel Ashes" is a wonderful book, and its sequel is even better. As a professional social worker who works with the poor, it is very gratifying for me to see a heroine who is also a social worker (something she denies in the book's sequel, but is nonetheless) at the very dawn of the social work profession. In the character of Helen Sorby, Cercone has crafted a heroine who is admirable and very real; not a few readers will, I suspect, fall head over heals for her.
The book's context illustrates the injustices of industrialism at the beginning of the twentieth century, reminding us that economic change (with which we are always contending) always brings with it human suffering. By placing the action in a time when few people believed that such suffering should be alleviated by the government (much like our own time), Cercone is able demonstrate the misery that occurs when such inaction is tolerated. These are the kind of injustices that brave reformers like Helen will not tolerate.
Helen's idealism is tempered by the worldly-wise Milo, a policeman who has had to conceal his Armenian heritage in order to become a cop. Milo is, like Helen, a victim of the prejudice of society; but like her, he refuses to be content with whining about it as an excuse for inaction. Even so, the differing responses of the two protagonists -- and their irresistable attraction to each other -- are what give the series its dramatic tension. The fact that then, as now, the book highlights very real and very current social problems is what makes it, like the work of Burke and Mosley and Chandler, more than just another mystery.
Highly recommended.......1999-05-13
A delightful first mystery by Cercone on the Steel City and some of its less than wealthy residents at the turn of the century. The mystery was suspenseful but more to my liking, the sparks really flew between Helen Sorby and Milo the police officer. Definitely awaiting the sequel.
Fantastic.......1998-08-27
This was a fantastic book. It was different and fascinating because of the year it took place and what you learned about early Pittsburgh. It was great because of the wonderful characters, and it was fantastic because it was a mystery that kept you guessing until the very end. I would highly recommend this book.
Sharp new mystery in a realistic historic setting.......1998-01-14
As a Pittsburgher, I really appreciated the accuracy and love of the city portrayed throughout the book. Cercone really captures the spirit of the immigrant populations, as well as the day-by-day details of Pittsburgh's industrial past. Delightful characters and a clever mystery just make the read more pleasant. A must-have for historical mystery fans AND for Steel City dwellers who love this place and its past.
Interesting, engrossing and well done........1997-10-24
I read this book more than once and continually look for a sequel. The characters are likeable, the dialogue is smart and funny, and a potential romance is suggested between two of the main characters. Violence is minimal but suspense lurks around every corner, steadily builds throughout the story, and drops you into the ending where you are unable to put the book down until you know for sure how everything and everyone turns out. Highly recommended.
Book Description
The first English translation of a signature work by one of the greatest living Arab poets.
In this noted anthology, the poet Adonis evokes the wisdom of Whitman's Leaves of Grass (which he liberally excerpts and remolds), the modernism of William Carlos Williams, and the haunting urban imagery of Baudelaire, Cavafy, and Lorca. Three long poems allow him to explore profoundly the human condition, by examining language and love, race and favor, faith and dogma, war and ruin. In the lyrical "This Is My Name " and "Introduction to the History of the Petty Kings, " Adonis ponders Arab defeat and defeatism. In "A Grave for New York, " he focuses on Vietnam-era America. Originally published in 1970 to widespread acclaim, the collection has been reprinted often but has never before appeared in English. Enhanced by Shawkat M. Toorawa's bilingual edition of the Arabic and English on facing pages, an afterword, and assisted by a critical bibliography of Adonis's works, this book is a crucial reference for all students and scholars of modern and Middle Eastern poetry and culture. Noted Syrian intellectual Nasser Rabbat offers a compelling foreword.
Customer Reviews:
A welcome contribution to Arabic Culture Studies.......2005-06-12
A Time Between Ashes And Roses brings to the attention of a Western readership the poetry and prose of Adonis (Ali Ahmad Said), a controversial writer in the Arab world who provocative thoughts are grounded in traditional poetic styles. Very ably translated into English by Shawkat M. Toorawa (who also provides an informative Afterword), A Time Between Ashes And Roses is a bilingual edition and a welcome contribution to Arabic Culture Studies. A freedom fighter traces his name in fire, and in the frozen throats/He dies/Jerusalem traces her name:/The State still exists/The State still exists.//Even so, the butchered river flows:/All water is the face of Jaffa/Every wound the face of Jaffa.
Book Description
Rose Price has held audiences captive with her riveting story for decades, but not until now has she unfolded her life story so completely. This book contains the gripping details of Rose Price's childhood in Skarzysko, Poland, her harrowing experiences in Nazi concentration camps, her liberation and the twists and turns of building a new life in the United States. The true story of how this Holocaust survivor came to believe in Jesus and became a spokeswoman for reconciliation before huge audiences in Germany is a drama of epic proportions - yet it is personal enough to speak into the life of any reader who has struggled with unforgiveness.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent story, excellent example of how lucky we in America are to be free........2007-06-16
I really enjoyed this book, I read it through to the end in one sitting, I just couldn't put it down. I was very inspired by her ability to forgive. I hope to become more forgiving myself. We are so lucky here in America. I hope to be able to meet the author, as I go to church with the granddaughter of Jonathan, her husband. Adrienne Walsh, Franklin, TN
Priceless.......2007-06-15
I found the story was easy to read and it held my attention. The story was inspiring and gave insite to what the jewsish people must have gone through physcially, emotionally, and spiritually. Her personal account was a wonderful testamonial for those who parished and the power of forgiveness. Mrs Price having the strength to forgive such horrendous treatment is a shining example to us all.
Excellent Book from a Holocaust Survivor.......2007-03-13
The writter of this book is the best. I found I could not put this book down. Horrors Rose endured are heart breaking (she was a child when this began). How can/could mankind be so mean and cruel, so utterly mad with inflicting pain and horror on people? This book should be on a must read list. You will be glad you did!
Fan of Rose.......2006-09-13
Easy reading but hard going. It has an easy, flowing style with lots of human interest details of her life... outside of the camps. The Concentration Camp sections are difficult to read. This is truly a great lady, right up there with Corrie TenBoom.
Customer Reviews:
Good Read.......2007-08-20
I read the reviews for Falling for a Dancer which is the American title of this same book and saw the miniseries. The miniseries was very good. The book was also good and the above review is correct in stating you should read the book before you watch, it puts much in place. The only thing that I could complain about is that the main hero "Mossy" doesn't appear til page 120ish. Second, when the "good" comes of everything in the book at the end, it is rushed. Other wise a Mauve Binchy type read and very good.
Falling for a Dancer is the American Title.......2007-06-29
I saw the mini-series and fell in love w/the storyline. Naturally the book is so much better. Suggestion, read the book then watch the mini-series. So much more depth and insight on the current events/people of the day. The stigma of being a single woman w/child and what one must go through to save "face". Having to marry a man you do not love and be subject to him because it is your duty and you are his property. So glad those days are gone (at least in some places). An entertaining read.

Customer Reviews:
Eye-opening and moving.......2006-06-09
Connie's book opened my eyes to what goes on in the life of a cancer victim. She helped me to be a better friend to the ones that are in my life and fighting this never-ending battle. I was moved to tears as she led me through her journey from cancer victim to cancer survivor. I am so thankful for this book because it gave me the resources I need to care and minister to those in my life with Cancer. What a gift! What a blessing!
Cancer 101: A Crash Course on What to Say and How to Help!.......2006-05-23
This book is profoundly helpful--everyone needs to read it if they know someone going through cancer. I found myself saying the very words the author says not to say when someone has cancer. The author carefully weaves her cancer story in with helpful things to say and do--literally a crash course in "Cancer 101." The appendix is filled with helpful suggestions, even how to prepare for doctor appointments and what to write in cards! In the section on "things not to do"--the author writes, "Don't disappear!" I actually did that to my friend because I didn't know what to say and now I finally have the words. Thank you for writing this helpful book and for enligthening us "inexperienced" and sometimes "unhelpful" friends!
Everyone with cancer or knows someone with cancer needs to read this book!.......2006-05-12
I had the privilege of hearing the author at the Weekend of Hope in Stowe, VT. What an incredible journey she has chronicled for us in her book. Each chapter of her roller-coaster of emotions ends with a section on what to say and how to help. Everyone needs to read this book! Some of her anecdotes are humorous and others made me cry. She not only shares what "not" to say, but offers suggestions on what the cancer patient needs to hear! I found the appendix very helpful: How to Prepare for Appointments, and specific phrases to write in cards. Who of us hasn't said the wrong thing or have been at a loss for words? Not anymore! I'm making sure my doctor has this book in his office and passes it out to all his patients! The title is a little misleading: It should be what to say and do when someone you love has cancer. Thank you for enlightening us Ms. Pombo.
"Survivor Friendly".......2006-04-15
Recently I was at a survivor's conference and being a nurse and also a breast cancer survivor, I can wholeheartedly recommend this book! In fact, I gave my last copy away to a newly diagnosed breast cancer "survivor." The author's transparency and willingness to take us on her personal journey through the stages of breast cancer was very healing. I found the appendix to be especially helpful: things to say and do. This book has been added to our patient resource library.
Helpful for patients and doctors!.......2006-03-27
I heard the author speak recently at a conference and highly recommend this book to patients, their doctors, family and friends. It's an excellent resource, packed with very practical information--what to say and do when someone is diagnosed. I bought two and gave one away already.
