As always - Footprint Guides are the best!.......2007-05-26
I love Footprint! Since I began traveling I've used these books. Everyone has their opinion, but I trust only these. I'm moving to Mexico in a few months and this is the only guide I'm bringing with me. Very detailed, readable, with good maps and contact info.
Very good!!!.......2007-03-08
Many usefull information in this addition!!Easily to understant!!It helped me to plann all my trip.
I didn't find this useful........2007-01-11
It's big and current but it stayed in my suitcase while I traveled with my backpack. Part of that was due to its weight and part that it was not detailed enough to be helpful to me.

Need More for the Driver and Camper.......2005-11-09
We drove to Panama and back in our RV using Lonely Planet's "Central America on a Shoestring" and the Footprint "Central America and Mexico" guides as our main references. Both are written primarily for the backpacker taking public transport and staying in hotels, but we found Footprint had more information for camping. Both were helpful, but ultimately we ended up finding our own camping places and writing our own book more focused on driving and camping. If you are spending time in one country and not just passing through, it is better to have a Footprint or other guide for each country. For example, we found some camping places in a Panama guide which weren't in the Central America guide.
Perfect.......2004-07-23
I drove to Panama with a friend of mine this last summer, using this book as a guide. It was accurate, useful, and led us to many places that we would never have found otherwise. I cannot speak highly enough of it. If I am traveling anywhere else in the future, I am buying a Footprint guide. The maps in the back proved accurate, too, succesfully getting us all the way to Panama. I looked at a Lonely Planet guide to Panama once I was there, and found that it was not nearly as accurate or useful. If you are traveling anywhere in Mexico or Central America, this footprint guide is all you need. Buy it.

Highly recommended.......2001-03-16
From Planeta Journal - The Handbook looks better than ever. This new edition of the Mexico and Central America guide provides reliable information about general tourism as well profiles of national parks and reserves. Explore the ruins of Copan in Honduras, Oaxaca's beaches or Belize's cayes. This is a terrific guide. The format is easy to follow. Colorful pictures and maps compliment the text. Highly recommended.
a tourists best friend.......2000-01-01
I used the handbook for a 6 month motorcycle trip along the transamerican highway (from Canada to Peru) and it has proven to be very accurate and reliable. Its like a bible for tourists.
Handbook Series.......1999-12-23
I'm a big fan of the Handbook series; I began using the Latin America Handbook in 1972, have used it over many years, and have used any of the rest of the series that I could find, whenever and wherever I have found them. I used the 1996 edition for Mexico and Cuba, and it confirmed my opinion that there is no better guidebook available for Latin America. I'm headed for Central America in a few days, and unfortunately haven't been able to get a copy in time, so I've had to get another - O.K., but I will miss the thorough coverage of the Mexico and Central American Handbook. It's good for places to stay at all levels, for services, for transportation, and gives good general information such as history, current situations, and most importantly, is updated every year.
Highly Recommended.......1998-04-13
Our company, AmeriSpan, sends thousands of people to Latin America every year. This is the book that we use AND recommend to our clients. It is updated annually and is simply the best. -John Slocum, President of AmeriSpan

i traveled through mexico to costa rica with this book over a period of three years (1992 edition). stayed in every type of living arrangement, travelled by nearly every type of transport, and it had the info that i needed to make it. one book for 7 countries you can't beat it. just got the updated edition for my next trip.

Buy the Rough Guide.......2002-07-24
Having used rough guides for years we wanted to reduce the books we were carrying on our travels through mexico and central america.
This is our first experience of the footprint series and we are very disappointed with it. We spent a frustrating morning in mexico city recently trying to find shops listed in the guide which proved not to be there or in the wrong street. Its understandable that places will move or close down but the sheer number of mistakes we{ve found indicates that the publishers have rushed out the 2002 edition without fully checking facts. The guide also lacks the wit, verve and accuracy of the writing in the rough guides and doesnt make for particularly interesting reading.
Brilliant guide!.......2002-05-31
I must have purchased 10 or 12 different guides to Central America/Mexico in recent times and was rather loathe to buy yet another - but I am glad I did! This is an excellent guide offering really up-to-date information and worthwhile recommenations. No one guide give you all the info you need, but couple this with Knopf Guides' Route of the Maya, and perhaps Lonely Planet's Guatemala, Belize and Yukatan Guide and you need no other! VERY highly recommended!

Customer Reviews:
Extremely concise and accurate: the best "alternative" to other guides........2007-08-20
Some years ago I solo travelled (backpacking) all through Central America from Panama to Yucatan Peninsula (Mexico). I tried Footprint guides for the first time and I was absolutely amazed.
This guide is absolutely great. I do agree with other reviewers: the paper is very thin (how to place so much info in a handy guide), maps could more precise and in a huge guide there may be some mistakes (I assure you that, for instance, the guide was really concerned about safety in El Salvador, and that was totally right).
BUT... it is concise, precise and realistic. I have enough of this kind of comments that you may have read in other guides: "the hostel is run by a Danish former sailor called Jürg and his wife Ingrid who will make you feel like at home. She cooks delicious crêpes and are very helpful and you will enjoy their anecdotes, etc, etc, etc". Thick paper, tons of photos and tons of rubbish like that: you get to the hostel, there is no Danish sailor, no crêpes, no anecdotes and lots of noise in front of a road. By contrast, Footprint says: noisy, avoid the rooms overlooking the bus station, not that clean, but cheap and very well located. Safe area. That is real, but other guides avoid such comments because they are too much diplomatic.
When you have to read a guide while sitting in a yellow former American school bus in an extremely potholed road, you need that language: direct, precise, concise and avoiding those unreal idylic stories.
I carried two guides: CentralAmerica in a "Horshoe" and Footprint. They cover several countries, so sometimes one may provide more information than the other on a certain field. But, no doubt, Footprint was much, much better and the best guide I have ever had. And, please, do not mislead people: IT IS ABSOLUTELY BUDGET TRAVELLER GOOD.
Now, I will be going to Malaysia and, apparently, Footprint does not publish such "country/region guides", but only about cities, maybe thanks to comments like "this is not a budget traveller guide..." : oh, no, it covers a whole underdeveloped region, but it is intended for rich people going to stay a week in an expensive resort in the Mayan Riviera... Come on!
I feel sorry about that, so as many other times I will have to buy the typical guide with nice photos, which is ok, although not that good since it is too politically correct and provides so much absolutely unuseful info. But, even if not up-to-date, I guess I will buy a used 2002 Footprint edition just to compare again...
Central knowledge for the full experience........2005-12-11
It covers Mexico, Belieze, Honduras... basically all the contries in CENTRAL AMERICA and MEXICO. The massive bonus is it covers them all really well. It's the ultimate trip; I started in Costa Rica and dipped into every country along the trail to Mexico. All you need is one guide book to lead the way, and look no further than this one. Accurate, thoughtful, humorous, knowledgable... who needs to hire a Mexican guide for the day when you've got this baby in your pocket. if you wanna know the history or just somewhere to stay quick, or where you can get a good local bite then read on...
Don't be fooled by the excess of snazzy photography in the Lonely Planet et al, this company have done their research and really well. Whatever you're desires from Central America and Mexico; whether it be a bull fight i Mexico and take away burritos, or dinner over looking the white sands of Roatan, you won't regret purchasing this for your travels. And rememeber... what's the point of just buying the guide book for Costa Rica? Even if that is your only intended destination, once you've sampled the fabulous food and vibrant lifestyle of this part of the world you'll be back to venture into the other countries soon enough...
Pura Vida.
INFORMATIVE,GREAT BUT............2003-07-19
First of.. don't even begin a trip without getting this book. I found that out on my first trip to Mexico and Belize after constantly borrowing other travellers editions. So it's as comprehensive as you'll get in a multiple country handbook (if you're planning on spending a lot of time in one country get the footprint guide for that country-as this book will have it's shortfalls if that's what you're doing); with some good info and if you're really looking to get down to the nitty gritty of the country then this book is for you. However, I found that sometimes the author was a little too critical of places and towards the end of our trip when we decided to kick our heels and say goodbye to the bus trips and backpacking and head off to a resort town for 3 days before heading home, the book was really lacking. The Frommers Guide more than made up for this and I think that next time I go back to travel around Central America and decide to spend some time in Mexico do yourself a favor and get the Frommers guide and travel with both.
A very impressive guide which I strongly recommend........2003-06-08
I used this guide during my three weeks in Nicaragua and enjoyed the excellent writing style. His accommodations and restaurants recommendations are up-to-date and reliable. I found his recommendations to always be valid and that says a lot about a guide.
Hutchison's writing is succinct and unencumbered by the superfluous. He gives you a solid mental picture, within a paragraph or two, of what to expect and how you can enjoy it. I also enjoyed his "Further Reading & Cinema" sections that he has with each country.
Because this guide covers all of Central America and Mexico, the history, economic, culture and environment sections are abbreviated and you may wish for more. Thus, if you are going to visit just one country, as I did, you may want to buy only that country's guide. For Nicaragua I also bought "Moon Travel - Nicaragua". (see my review)
The guide could improve it's weak, mediocre maps. Also frustrating, in all Footprint guides, is the use a price guide for accommodations. Instead of just stating the price per room, Footprint gives you a cumbersome group of letters that correspond to the cost of the room. The problem is that you may forget that LL=$... and up. Or that the letter "A" next to a hotel means it costs around $... So you have to find the legion again and figure it out. You would think that as many years as FootPrint has been around, they would have realized that just quoting the cost of the room in dollars is the best way.
Also, there was no mention by Hutchison regarding the rising problems with crime and gangs in Managua (Capital of Nicaragua). In fact he recommends seeing the old Cathedral "at night" and, for the past few years, this is and has been, a dangerous area for violent crime. In fact, when I asked to go to this area in the daytime, even then the taxi driver told me be careful using the words: "peligroso, peligroso". While I was there I talked with the Cathedral's resident shoe shine man and he also told me the area was very dangerous at night, and he leaves every day at 5pm because "me gusto mi vida."
That said, this is a very impressive guide which I strongly recommend for those going to various Central American Countries. Strongly Recommended 4.5 stars
The best book among the South American guides but..........2003-05-02
If you compare this book to the other guides available it deserves 5 stars. It is the one definitely providing more information, also if compared to books on only one specific country. However the way data are presented is a little confusing and far from the Lonely Planet clarity. In Mexico, most of the hotels described as clean where not exactly like that. Moreover, many times it happened that excellent hotels (some with surprisingly low prices) were not even mentioned while a lot of space was given to overpriced and/or not so good places (is the guide really up-to-date?). Last note: it would be nice if the pages were a little thicker/sturdier (again Lonely Planet is the reference), but that is definitely less important.
Book Description
Footprint's Mexico Handbook is packed with the practical travel advice and unrivalled background information. It is the most up-to-date guide available for everybody, whether travelling independently or in a group. It includes highlights of Mexico illustrated with colour photography, comprehensive practical information on where to stay, what to eat and drink and keeping healthy, a special feature on the Aztecs, Maya and other Precolumbian civilisations, useful Spanish phrases plus colour maps to help plan a trip.

Book Description
No one wants to ride the Divorce Express. Especially Phoebe. It means she has to leave her New York City apartment and boyfriend every Sunday night to spend the week in the country with her dad. It means she has to go to ninth grade in a new school, and see her father go on dates. It's a hectic life with hardly any time to feel she really belongs with the kids in either place. Then, just when Phoebe's got a handle on juggling the pieces of her life, her mother makes a decision that will change everything again. And it could be disastrous! "Danziger's light style laced with humor will continue to attract readers." -- Booklist "The specific problems -- and seeming resiliency -- of the children of divorced parents, as well as the general concerns of young teenagers, are ably evoked....A pleasure." -- The New York Times Book Review "The author has a sympathetic eye for the ups and downs of her characters and a quick ear for adolescent conversation." -- The Horn Book
Customer Reviews:
Divorce-Express-Reading Marathon.......2002-04-01
This title may seem a little weird for you but I'm going to explain why it's called Divorce-Express-Reading Marathon... Well, when I started reading this book I thought it would be kind of boring, but when I read about Phoebe's story I couldn't stop reading! Instead of taking a week to read this book I took 2 to 3 days, and I was traveling! Imagine if I wasn't... Well, there are a few reasons that made me love this book so much. First of all, I loved the story. It is about a girl named Phoebe that has divorced parents and lives with her father in Woodstock while her mother lives in New York. She makes lots of new friends in Woodstock, and together they organize a protest to improve the cafeteria food of their school. She also has to confront lots of problems during the story, including her mother getting married to another guy... Well, I think I already told too much of the story, and to know the rest you'll just have to read this awesome book!! Enjoy!
The Divorce Express.......2001-12-14
The book I read was called The Divorce Express. It's about a girl name Pheobe whose parents didn't start getting along until they got a divorce when she was thirteen. Now that she's fourteen she spends the weekend with her father in woodstock New York ,and commutes on the bus called the ''Divorce Express'' for weekends with her mother in New York city.
It seems to me that joint custody means alot to Phoebe, because her parents are not together. Phoebe hates the fact that she has to deal with all the crisesin both of her parents lives. Phoebe's life improves when she meet a girl name Rosie who becomes her friend. Phoebe meets Rosie in Woodstock where her dad lives. Also her life changes when a boy named Dave that she had a crush on for years while going to visit her dad ask to date her. Just when phoebe thinks she got everything under control ,her mother announces that she's getting married.
Yes, I would recommand this book to other readers, because it's helping others who want to learn about marriage in the future.
The Divorce Express.......2001-08-29
I enjoyed The divorce Express very much. When Phoebe's parents got divorced, she was forced to ride a bus which was nick-named the Divorce Express because of all of the children riding to and from their seperated parent's homes. On the bus, Phoebe met a girl named Rosie Wison. The two girls became good friends not only on the Divorce Express, but in school also. After living with her mother, Phoebe moved in with her father, Jim. Jim lived in Woodstock and Phoebe didn't like the idea of moving in with him. Yet after a while of getting used to it, she didn't seem to mind it one bit. She participated when her school decided to take action when they could no longer stand the lunches they were being served in the cafeteria, she made a lot of frineds, and really began to fit in. Rosie helped a lot. Phoebe was also very fond of Rosie's mother Mindy. Jim and Mindy had met several times and also got along very well. Then, just when everything was in her life was going just right, Phoebe's mother announced thar she was going to get married to a man that Phoebe didn't like at all. I have to stop here and not give away the ending. The divorce Express was a very good book. It only took me a week to read it and i just couldn't put it down. I hope you will enjoy this book just as much as I did.
Great book!!!!.......1999-04-04
I thought this was a really great book. If you're parents are divorced this is a must read for you. It is also very comical and also very sad at times. Enjoy!!!
The Human Yo-Yo.......1997-04-28
I read this book during the summer and it was one of my favorite books I read that summer. The sequel: It's an Aardvark Eat Turtle World is a great too
