5 out of 5 stars A Must Have Guide.......2007-06-07

If you are going the Nepal to trek, this is an invaluable guide. I was in Nepal for three weeks and I used this book everyday. Stan Armington knows Nepal better than anyone. He has help from people like Jamling Tenzing Norgay and many others. This is an essential guide to the trekking in Nepal.

4 out of 5 stars Been there, Used it.......2004-09-14

I used this book during my six weeks in Nepal spring 2004 (trekking in Lantang, Helambu and Annapurna regions), and was glad to have it. In fact, I have my copy sitting in front of me right now! It gives detailed information on many of the better-traveled treks, along with some that are more out of the way. Plenty of information, including topo maps, to help you plan your trip or your day. Before I bought it, I sat down with several other guidebooks in an actual bookstore (yes, they do still exist!), and really felt that this one was the winner.

The most major component that I felt lacking was that there are many small guest houses or tea shops along most routes that are not mentioned at all, or that have sprung up since publication. But I soon figured that out on my own, and simply asked locals and other trekkers for advice. Overall, I definitely recommend this book. Enjoy your trip! I can't wait to go back!

*Note: Kathmandu has some great bookstores in the Thamel (tourist) district, and many (not all) books are cheaper than in the US (maybe pirated??). If you can wait, consider buying there.

3 out of 5 stars inspiration, please.......2002-08-01

Typical Lonely Planet in that it gives you all the facts, but very little inspiration. Basically for those who have already made up their mind and know exactly where they are going. That said the guide is incredibly detailed, it certainly doesn't leave out much of the nitty gritty kind. Then again, you don`t really need all this info as there are outfitters in Pakistan (forget the US/UK ones) that will take care of all the logistics for you at a price you can't beat, not even doing it all yourself.

4 out of 5 stars very good guidebook, but don't make it your trekking bible.........2000-02-26

this book was a great help in introducing me to the world of trekking, in terms of all the equipment i would need and the things i could expect while on a trek in nepal... it made the idea of trekking in nepal very feasible to me, and gave me confidence... but once i started trekking in nepal, i only used it as a light reference, mainly to look at the maps and see how far along i was on the trek, and perhaps to gain some information about the areas i was going through... as the author states, the suggested itineraries are not absolute, and, according to how much time and money you have, should only be used as a reference; some suggested days were too long for my group, and on other days we trekked longer distances than suggested... it's not every year you get to go to a place like nepal, so i suggest you give yourself plenty of time to enjoy your trek, take some extra rest days, and not make your trek a race...i needed more money than what this book suggested i would need; prices change... and also, especially on the annapurna trekking route, many lodges are being built every year and it's impossible for guidebooks such as this to keep up; i often thought it unfair for books like this to name specific lodges, while other lodges, some of them new, with better food and people, go unmentioned; talking with guides, porters, or other trekkers would be a good way of finding quality lodges... i think this book does a very good job of preparing you for a trek in nepal, but once you're there, keep your mind open for other sources of information, and use this book as a reference guide and not your one and only trekking "bible"... you'll get more out of your experience in nepal that way...

1 out of 5 stars Nice only for the armchair traveller........1999-12-02

I've used this book for 2 treks in Nepal and it was a disappoinment (the book, not the treks). As mentioned above, the book provides a plethora of trekking essentials (preparation, etc.) and background info. To use it as a guide on the actual trail is altogether another matter.

The maps are too general and is NOT suitable for actual guidance. The suggested itinerary varies too greatly for the average trekker. Some suggested trekking days that are way too difficult to complete or way too short. Things are changing quickly in Nepal...and the book does not keep up with this adequately.

I've meet many people on the trail that were also dissapointed in the misinformation regarding festival dates. The Nepalese use a lunar calendar so it is easy to see why the dates can be off from year to year. It is unfortunate if someone plans their vacation by this. There are too many misleading information here...and for a foreigner/tourist/traveller/trekker, this can prove disappointing and costly.

Take it from someone who's been there, use this book to entertain yourself, not to trek with.

5 out of 5 stars The greatest trekking guide to Nepal.......1999-05-15

I bought it when I was planning to travel to Nepal. Unfortunately, I couldn't go, but the informations on the book helped me a lot to get in contact with nepali culture and details about trekking in this interesting country.

5 out of 5 stars What the Nepal trekker needs to know: it's all here........1999-03-05

This latest edition of Stan Armington's guide to trekking in the Nepal Himalaya (note the lack of an "s", as in "Sierra") provides a panoply of information for both the trekker and the armchair traveler. First traveling to Nepal in the mid-sixties, Mr. Armington has lived there since 1971. He has been in the business of organizing treks longer than almost anyone. He knows the country and the people and writes from a wealth of first-hand knowledge.

Whether one treks solo (not recommended, really, but certainly possible) or with a trekking company, this informative book provides ALL the information one needs to have a successful, delightful, and authentic trekking experience in this ancient and remote kingdom. (Nepal is a Hindu kingdom, with a Hindu king.)

As Mr. Armington acknowledges, trekking is neither a walk in the country nor a climbing experience. Hence, he goes into great detail to prepare the adventurer for what will for most people be one of the major vacationing events of their lives.

Nepal is one of the poorest countries in the world. A visitor must know how to take care of oneself and also how to have a minimal impact on the environment and social structure. Mr. Armington covers all these matters excellently.

The trekking routes are there, too, almost all of them walked--and measured (with a GPS)--by the author to ensure complete accuracy.

Armchair travelers will enjoy the color pictures and the descriptions of the land and its people. Travelers and trekkers will want to devour the information, basically cover-to-cover.

For someone planning a trek to the Nepal Himalaya, this book is an absolute essential. It should be used through all stages of planning and carried in the rucksack on the trek. It's that good, and that necessary, and that complete--a distillation of a adult lifetime of experience in the region by a world-reknown travel professional--in a word, a real bargain.

        Book Description

From the lush green hills of their homeland to the cramped ghettoes of industrialized cities an ocean away, from the famine-ravaged fields of Ireland to the community dance halls in America, the Irish documented their history through song.

Far from the Shamrock Shore tells the story of Irish immigration to America in words and lyrics, with an accompanying CD further illustrating the journey through song. The Irish-American folk and popular songs featured complement the text, highlighting issues immigrants faced and the social conditions they experienced from the 1700s to the early twentieth century. They tell of the backbreaking task of survival in the New World; the battles waged for fair treatment and fair pay for the work done by these immigrants on railroads, on canals, and in mines, construction, and factories; the success that they ultimately attained in politics, business, and society; and their continuing influence on American life and culture.

5 out of 5 stars Gain Insight into Celtic Music.......2004-08-03

You will love Mick Maloney's warm voice lovingly pouring the poetry of Irish music into your ears. This is not the overused "Danny Boy," but a tremendous exploration of traditional ballads that will open your eyes and ears to Ireland's rich history and music.
I recommend first reading the boxed sections in the book for each song. Then listen to that selection on the CD while reading along with the lyrics. Finish with absorbing the 2-page history lesson that accompanies each song.
Later listen to the whole CD, just soaking in the evocative Irish music. The background from reading the book really enhances your enjoyment of the music.

        5 out of 5 stars A great gift!.......2003-03-07

This wonderful book tells the story of the Irish immigration to North America through the songs that they sang. Accompanied by a CD containing sixteen songs performed by the author and his band. The songs are wonderfully performed, making the CD worth the purchase price alone. Each of the songs is accompanied by a two to four page write-up that explains the song, and what was going on in the immigrant Irish (Irish-American and Irish-Canadian, though mostly the former) community at that time.

This book is very handsomely made, with lots of information, interesting pictures, and the CD. Indeed, I would highly recommend this book as a gift. I enjoy having this book, and think that anyone interested in the Irish-Americans will enjoy it as well. I highly recommend this book.

        Customer Reviews:

        5 out of 5 stars Diary of a Disaster.......2007-07-06

An outstanding book! This series has been a wonderful source of information concerning the more obscure air combat scene in the Asia/ Pacific warzone. The day-to-day accounts of allied air activity combined with personnel insights and photos provide a stark picture of the war's early days. British, Dutch, American, Aussie, and Japanese accounts of the signifcant early battles are compared and contrasted, highlighting the "fog of war" and the abilities of both sides to grossly overestimate their combat results. Volume one was so outstanding that I ended up purchasing the remaining books in the series immediately after finishing it. You will not regret purchasing this or any of the other books in this series. Volume 2 contains some minor corrections for Volume 1, as well as a chapter that was originally intended for the first book.
I find Christopher Shores one of the best aviation writers out there. This book is really better then 5 stars; the illustrations earn it a 6!

5 out of 5 stars Slightly Flawed But Excellent.......2005-07-06

Let me first say that both volumes in the Bloody Shambles series are excellent and far superior to ANY other text on the subject of air warfare in the first six months of the Pacific War that I've ever seen.

Nonetheless, having conducted extensive research into the role of the Royal Netherlands Naval Air Service (MLD) during the Japanese invasion of the former Netherlands East Indies (NEI), I can tell you that both volumes of Bloody Shambles contain some fairly substantial errors on the MLD. However, this can be overlooked somewhat given that the role of the MLD in the Pacific War is not particularly well covered in English and there is very little information available for the non-Dutch speaking historian. It is unlikely that I would have noticed the errors in question had I not spent 11 years researching my own manuscript on the naval air war in the NEI.

But from what I can tell though, the rest of the information detailing the air war in the Philippines, NEI, Singapore and Burma appears to be incredibly accurate. Having grown up hearing and reading stories about how the "invincible" Japanese blew through Allied air defenses with nary a loss, these texts go a long way in educating the reader that in many cases, the Allies gave just as much as they received from the Japanese.

All in all, a must read for anyone interested in learning more about the true nature of the air war in the first six months of the Pacific War.

4 out of 5 stars invaluable for the historian.......2002-12-28

Christopher Shores is an international treasure, a man who has made it his task to suss out the truth about aerial combats in far corners of the globe, usually with the assistance of a fellow historian or two from the countries most involved. In this particular case, he is one of the few who have accessed Japanese records, and he compares them with Allied accounts on a day-by-day basis. This is great stuff, especially for those of us who already know something about the campaigns. My particular interest is the Flying Tigers of Burma, and I was delighted to have Shores's version, especially since he gives equal time to the RAF squadrons that fought alongside the AVG. But I confess that it took a great deal of concentration for me to slog through the Philippines campaign, about which I knew very little. So my conclusion is this: the more you know already, the more you will learn from this account. -- Dan Ford

        5 out of 5 stars Christopher Shores/Brain Cull.......2002-03-08

This book, yet another in the wonderful series of air war accounts done by Christopher Shores and Brian Cull is a great review of the early air war in the Pacific Theater. Mr. Shores and Mr. Cull use interviews with the participants as well as the actual unit reports to bring an idea of the constant struggle that the air war represented. Rather than being dry, these books are easy to read and a great resource.

        Product Description

DRIFTING TOO FAR FROM SHORE is Michael Spalding’s autobiographical account of 50 years of life encumbered by undiagnosed Attention Deficit Disorder. Born in Britain in 1949, the son of a famous scientist, his initial schooling was an abject disaster. So, as a teenager, he was sent away to a unique coeducational boarding school in Yorkshire, returning to London four years later, considerably happier, yet still woefully undereducated. However, the distractions of 1960s England undermined any further educational endeavors. Several trips to Russia expanded his horizons but not his credentials. Alcohol and treachery combined to destroy his engagement to the beautiful Curate’s daughter. Working and drinking in London and Paris, one ludicrous episode followed another. At twenty-three, he decided to escape city life and hitchhiked off to a hippie commune on the backside of a Greek Island in the Aegean Sea. Nine months later, the lure of the family business pulled him from the beach back to London. But not for long. Soon he was off again, this time to Corsica and a flirtation with the French Foreign Legion. Then to Italy for encounters with a novice nun, a stigmata-plagued Priest and a werewolf. Later in Stockholm, Sweden he callously discarded the love of a young Scandinavian girl. From old world to new, he rambled on from the ivory tower of Harvard to the plain old ivory of Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan and down to the jungles of southern Mexico. When he rejoined the family business, the success of the global enterprise brought with it family conflict, ultimately pitting father against son. With fortunes at stake, squabbling escalated into multi-million dollar lawsuits. From out of the aftermath came enlightenment. Attention Deficit Disorder was uncovered, diagnosed and addressed, ultimately leading to university and success.

        1 out of 5 stars Is this a man or a jellyfish?.......2006-06-19

What a narcissistic, poison pen account of a misspent life biting the very hands which fed him. He attacks his father for every misfortune in his life. Yet by the author's own admission he acknowledges his father supported him for most of his adult life. One questions the veracity of the "facts" of Mr.Spalding's supposed experiences as the author did not seek, nor did he receive any releases from the people he mentions by their actual names. The author blames his parents and ADD for a wasted life. By the time one is in their fifties it is a bit late to blame one's parents for their own shortcomings and problems. As an adult one is responsible for the life they lead and the choices they make. Not once does the author own his actions. He is drifting alright---like a jellyfish stinging all those who cared for him to the best of their abilities, and then blaming them for his shortcomings. Sadly it appears this man is trying to simultaneously ride the coat tails of his brilliant and widely respected father whilst blaming him for his ADD. The sad fact is this man obviously lacks a conscience and has written a book which attests to this fact. Just a typical vanity press publication---totally self serving and an injustice to those who truly suffer and endure ADD every day without the advantages Mr. Spalding has had at his disposal for most of his life. Don't waste your money.

        5 out of 5 stars a unique experience.......2005-12-12

"Drifting Too Far From Shore" is a true story that reads like a wild ride of fiction. Michael Spalding shares his life story to date, and how he dealt with Attention Deficit Disorder before it was even a recognized condition. Growing up in the 50's and 60's proved to be a challenge that children today are blessed with escaping. If there had been treatments for Michael earlier, he might have led one very different life.
The stories he tells are fraught with great difficulties in school, a father who couldn't understand why his son couldn't comprehend, mischief galore and so much more. The days of his early adulthood were one blur of gallivanting trip after trip, bedroll partner after bedroll partner, and lack of direction or goal. Michael's stories of his adulthood to date are tales of continuing troubles with his father and their business, his wanderlust, temptations of alcohol, and his eventual return to school. It is a life story that is easily recognized as a struggle, but he also had a lot fun along the way.

The purpose here is to shed some light on the reality of ADD, as well as tell an interesting story. You will come to know how it feels to have it and also come to understand those who deal with it a little more. Mostly, readers with come to know Michael and will find him an irresistible character, who just happens to be real.

The book is written in first person and reads well. I enjoyed seeing the world through Michael's perspective and trust that other readers will find it a unique experience. I recommend "Drifting Too Far From Shore," but warn that it is not a book for young people due to its adult content.

        Book Description

When first published in 1980, Far from Shore was hailed as unique and innovative. Author Kevin Major broke new ground in a young adult novel by using a multinarrative structure - five different voices - to tell the story of a troubled youth.

Fifteen-year-old Chris Slade lives in a small coastal community on the island of Newfoundland. Faced with instability on many sides, he searches for direction in a family broken apart by unemployment. Even his easy-going, humorous attitude fails to steady him as he stumbles through the summer after tenth grade: he's failed his year, he can't find a summer job, and he's incredibly bored. So the first thing he heads for is trouble - trouble that ends in a confrontation with the law. Work as a counselor at a summer camp offers the challenge of a fresh start, but it is here, amid new responsibilities, that he encounters his toughest test as a young man.

Far From Shore by Kevin Major

Kevin Major pulls you in the book at once. The book begins when Chris, the main character, is at the Christmas dinner with his mom and sister when his dad walks in drunk. His dad usually does this, so it is nothing new. Chris's family is poor and when his dad moves away for the summer they have no way of making money.
When ever his dad goes away he gets mad and starts to hang out with the wrong crew, and ends up getting drunk and damaging school property. Chris mom is getting tried of his be attitude and decide to send him to a church camp hoping to straight in him up. When Chris arrives at the camp the rev. stick with an 11 year-old kid who wants to go home because nobody he knows is there. Chris gets very close to him and ends up saving his life. Chris then learns how hard it is to keep up with a "child".
When I first started to read this book I knew it would be good. It was a good book and I enjoyed every reading session I had with it. I advise you to read this book if u love action packed book.

            Book Description

When God created the world and all that is in it, he brought the concept of time into eternity. But with the entrance of sin and death during the fall of mankind, another form of time entered as well. This type of time is not attached to eternity, but it is a counterfeit production of Satan in his attempt to be God, and he's offering the temporal-a deceiving place with no time.

God's eternal life promises joy, peace, and life everlasting. However, Satan's temporal time is a place where there is never enough time in the day-no time to reflect, meditate, or pray. Only by forcing ourselves away from this time-trap can we hope to see and hear God. Author John Stamos Parrish examines time as it relates to commonly pondered topics, such as:

The purposeful collection Far From the Shores of Galilee provides the opportunity to pull back from time. Each story is like a rest stop along life's journey-a place to pause, reflect, and pray-a place where you can disconnect from the world and reconnect with God.
