Taking pics.......2007-09-13
There seems to be a lot of good info in here but its not easy to get to. A lot of the book is still dedicated to 35mm film photography and it's format is not very easy to use. I would have preferred a book with ring binding or something and maybe heavier construction for field use.
Very simple and obvious, 80% of the book is not useful.......2007-08-25
In case you look for a very basic list of basic things related to photography, this book is probably useless for you. It has a lot of content related to non-digital cameras, which probably is irrelevant to most readers today. And it is very superficial. I only take away a few tips on low light photography, but that is not worth the price of the book.
Nice to have.......2007-08-14
This is a good book to have as reference. I bought Lonely Planets Travel Photography and they are almost the same. This book is thicker and cover other topic the other does not. Its nice to have though.
Advice is simplistic and there are superior resources, perhaps a decent single book for the reader on the road.......2007-05-21
Richard I'Anson has been a professional travel photograph for two decades now and has become a familiar face in the Lonely Planet series through his collaborations with Tony Wheeler, Lonely Planet: Chasing Rickshaws and Rice Trails: A Journey Through The Ricelands Of Asia & Australia (Lonely Planet Pictorials). His book LONELY PLANET TRAVEL PHOTOGRAPHY first appeared at the turn of the millennium, and this second edition followed in 2004.
I'Anson's book covers all the basics of photography, such as choice of lenses and film, setting of such variables as shutter speed and aperature, and when to use a tripod and when not. The book's points are illustrated with dozens of I'Anson's own photographs, mainly from the Indian subcontinent, and the instruction is coloured by his own tastes, such as using natural light as often as possible and avoiding flash. The book succeeds as a general introduction to photography, and I think that my photos are at least slightly better now than before I purchased the book.
However, I'Anson's advice is extremely simplistic, as other reviewers have pointed out. There's little here that's specifically about travel photography, and so any other introduction to photography would cover the same group, perhaps even more economically. In fact, on one of the last pages I'Anson gives a list of URLs to websites with publicly available guidance, which turn out to be even more in-depth than LONELY PLANET TRAVEL PHOTOGRAPHY.
The book's production is also unideal. It's annoyingly typeset completely in sans serif. That makes it hard on the eyes, and only in a roundabout way did I discover that the author's surname is I'Anson (with i) instead of l'Anson as one might assume. The book is also printed entirely on plates, which is a necessary evil of a book aiming to display full-quality photographs, but which means that the book will add significant weight to your pack.
Advance hype was that the second edition of the book would include the world of digital photography. Unfortunately, digital very much seems an afterthought here. The advice is meagre, simplistic ("make sure you insert your digital camera card properly"), and generally in those spheres of digital that would go out of date most quickly and did. The manual that came with your digital camera probably gives better advice on taking good photos that I'Anson does, especially when so much of the text is taken verbatim from camera manufacturers.
All in all, I would recommend LONELY PLANET TRAVEL PHOTOGRAPHY only for those travelers who are going to spend a long time on the road and unconnected, who need all the info packed into one single volume. However, you're going to get through the material very quickly, and wonder why you got such a pricey and heavy book for so very little benefit.
Best concise travel photography guide on the market.......2006-07-04
This gem of a book is probably the best concise guide to photography on the market (and I've looked through most of them over the years). As I am an advanced semi-pro and sometime pro photographer, it would be hard for me to judge how useful this book is to an absolute beginner, but for me it is a handy reference to review before a major trip, reminding me of things I might forget about that are not part of my everyday shooting in Coastal California (such as the advice on ways that you may inadvertantly expose your film to too much heat, and the caveats about damage from sand, humidity, etc., as well as specific exposure and filtering considerations in some of the extreme conditions one encounters overseas).
I own the 2000 edition, which I find perfectly well organised, but plan to look at the updated edition this week to see what changes have been made and if the quality has been fully retained or if the guide has been "dumbed down". What I find particularly useful in the 2000 edition is the moderately well annotated comparison shots. Most photography guides provide silly and useless "comparisons" of different focal lengths from the same standing position, or "artistic" renditions that I personally despise such as soft focus portraits, slo-mo waterfalls, etc. This guide is the best I've ever seen for picking appropriate subject matter and shooting conditions for showing the best use of specialised filters (such as 81 series and 82 series) as well as summarising Best Practices and pitfalls of graduated and Neutral Density filters.
The book spendds little or no time on subjects such as Black & White, Infra-Red, Ultraviolet lighting, etc. Other subjects are left uncovered as well, and this is entirely appropriate for a book that focuses on the likely types of photography that even a professional photographer would probably engage in during extensive travels. There is an implicit emphasis on the practical considerations of what one brings along on a longer vacation (such as three weeks or longer).
My only criticism on the advice is one that is common to most modern photography books, and that is the advice for people to buy zoom lenses. Although the more high-end zooms are now capable of producing sharp photographs and delivering adequate light, those zooms tend to be as heavy and expensive as the fixed lenses that they replace, and my experience with moderately priced variable aperture zoom lenses is that they are unable to deliver the requisite amount of light or minimum focus distance required by most "best light" shooting (i.e. two hours before sundown in the temperate zone, or half an hour to one hour befolre sundown in the tropics). Also, learning to use a few ideal focal lengths (such as 24, 35, 50, and 105) greatly enhances the development of one's technical and artistic skills; whereas using zooms tends to make one lazy in using the zoom to frame the picture vs. thinking in terms of aspect ratio and which shooting position delivers best lighting.

Recommended.......2005-10-23
This book starts out by introducing basic concepts such as exposure, composition, lightning and how this effects landscape photographs. It then continues with an in-depth description of how to approach various landscapes and weather conditions. The text is clearly written and each concept emphasized with illustrative examples. The book can be followed by novices, but the large amount of tips and tricks should definitely attract more experienced photographers. Also nice about this book, is that the description of camera gear is done in a very general way, omitting examples of todays hardware (outdated tomorrow). Reading this book has strengthened my technical background and given me a lot of ideas that I'm eager to try out. I have no trouble recommending it.

Customer Reviews:
Great book for Urban Travel Photography!!!.......2006-11-28
In my opinion, this is a wonderful guide book for an Urban Travel photographer. The section on what to take is the most useful and it tells you what kind of subjects an urban travel photographer (as opposed to wildlife travel photographer or landscape travel photographer) should look out for.
[...]
I do not profess that that my photographs are great, but I feel that this book has helped me tremendously during my trip.
Contrary to what the previous reviewer mentioned, I do not find statements like this to be useless:
"Successful images have a point of interest"
"Skyscrapers are often covered in glass, which provides reflectons of the buildings around them"
"Fountains are often the centerpiece of city squares or traffic islands."
These are words that set a thinking photographer's mind to think - you can see the result of these words at my photo-site.
All in all, I am very happy to have read this book before my trip. It couldn't have been any better.
What a waste.......2006-07-22
I was looking for a book that might offer sound advice on shooting architecture and they seem surprisingly rare. When my search on Amazon turned up this book, it seemed a fair bet that urban travel photography would include shooting buildings so I gave it a try.
The first chapter covers equipment and the depth of coverage is limited to telling you that there are SLRs, advanced digital cameras, and rangefinders. The author is also kind enough to tell you that there are zoom lenses, prime lenses, and that some are telephoto while others are wide angle. He does not tell you which of these might come in most handy in an urban environment. He does not discuss the pros and cons of lighter, smaller, but slower lenses compared to the bigger, heavier, but also faster lenses that cost a lot more money. He doesn't really tell you much of anything beyond acknowledging the existence of basic equipment. If any of the above is news to you, then this book will be a real treasure trove but most will find it so elementary as to be utterly useless.
Unfortunately, the chapter on equipment is exactly like all of the following chapters in the book. I have culled a small sample of the amazing revelations this book has to offer.
"Successful images have a point of interest"
"Skyscrapers are often covered in glass, which provides reflectons of the buildings around them"
"Fountains are often the centerpiece of city squares or traffic islands."
These gems are a small sample but there are many similar "tips" to be found. There is a chapter that covers all aspects of photographic technique including exposure, composition, depth of field, and light in 14 pages that is mostly photographs. You can imagine the depth of coverage this allows for the various topics.
It's almost hysterically funny that the book is published in digest size, presumably so that you can carry it in a hip pocket. What's lacking is any information or advice that you would actually find useful to bring with you.
The book's one asset is that it is filled with various travel photos and some of them are quite nice. Unfortunately, the digest size of the book prevents them from being seen to their fullest potential.
Since there were no reviews at the time I bought this, I've "taken one for the team" and am posting this so you won't have to waste your money like I did.

Useful, concise.......2007-03-10
As the previous reviewer says, this may not add anything over other books, but I found it a good read. Lots of tips on what to bring, how to shoot, and how to look beyond the obvious shot and make something interesting. It's also small enough to squeeze into a bag and take it with you. Also has tips for digital and film photographers.
My friend owns a copy and I'm thinking of getting my own. The photographs are fantastic and gave me plenty of ideas.
SAME OLD INFO.......2007-01-10
I wish the font size would have been bigger. Most information has been written about in other books.

Wow what a book.......2005-11-20
There I was thinking I knew about taking photograhs, but I learnt such a lot, and the sample pictures demonstrate with great clarity what the focus should and can be.
As a result I am now looking for more books from Michael Coyne.
some useful tips..........2005-09-21
I bought the lonely planet travel photography guide a few years ago and absolutely loved it! I learned a lot of the basics and really improved my "photo taking" skills. Therefore I was very excited when i found out about the publication of this book. However this people photography guide was disappointing. It provides some useful tips on taking photographs of people but the photos inside the book are not particularly inspiring. Some are good but many are just so-so. (whether one likes a photo or not is very subjective, in my view, but the photos inside this book are really not that exciting. may be i was expecting more from an expert in the field)

A sure way to go blind.......2007-04-10
The text of the book looks like it's printed in font size 7 or smaller, and some of the text is printed in a light shade of grey, which make reading doubly hard. What's particularly annoying is that some captions are printed at a 90 degree angle to the rest of the text, and printed in the margins of the book to boot. The text is also printed too near the book binding, so you have to really force open the book, and in the process, break its spine, in order to read the text on the inside. What, is the publisher trying to scrimp on paper?
For a book on photography, the examples of photos shown in the book are nothing to shout about, and the pictures are also miserably small, which make it even harder to appreciate the already-mediocre pictures.
While the techniques explained in the book are clear and easily understood, they only skims the surface of photography, and may be at a level suitable only for beginners. Those wishing to hone their skills beyond beginners' level may be better off getting Bryan Peterson's series of excellent photography books on exposure, protraiture and seeing creatively.
For the type of information found in the book, it is not worth wading through the unreadable text and layout.
Well worth the small price.......2005-02-18
A book really aimed at young SLR users which covers definitions and the basics in a clear writing style that avoids jargon (example: depth of field covered without having to talk about "bokeh"). Goods technical tips and travel photo craft although few will be able to reproduce the quality of images that he, as a professional, has included without the early morning starts, carrying the tripod, taking trips to prime locations with cab drivers etc.
However, the whole point of the book is to give amateurs more confidence, reduce wasted shots and take better pictures when on that special adventure and on this level it succeeds.
Great Book for beginners on travel.......2002-10-17
I just went on holiday for a month to Indonesia with my girlfriend. She gave me this book about photography because I want to do more with my minolta then just making quick snapshots. I fell completely in love with it and the way Richard explains thing to the reader. You immediately feel that he is not just a professional photographer who stands above you with his experience and let you know he does. No, you really feel instantly that he talks to you as a friend who's gone through the same experiences and made the same mistakes the reader is making. And the images are stunning too.
This book was a real workbook for me during my travel through Indonesia and I'll recommend it to anyone who want to make more of his travel pictures. Thank you Richard L'anson.
handy and informative.. a must buy!.......2002-02-28
well written and useful accompanying technical notes showing the aperture and shutter readings.. excellant for a quick and informative read to boost your basics of photography.
This is a guide to taking better pictures..........2001-12-30
Well, what can I add? ... what my fellow readers haven't mentioned yet... and I concur.
Why am I giving only 4 stars you may ask? (I would have given 4.5, but this option is not available.) Well, I rate books with four stars when the book is very well written, good quality in word and print AND will be used over and over again.
I am a hobby photographer since many years, have taken thousands of photos... and may therefore be the wrong audience. Someone said "a beginners guide", I agree. I was wondering what I don't know, going through the book twice, comparing the images and advice with my own experience. He is right. I have read it, will put it aside and most likely not look at it again.
But if you are new to the field of photography, reading this book will save you rolls of film and will let you learn a lot, in either case: in digital or conventional photography.
The book is very nice, a compact format and what I've realised later (when reading it a second time) that this is a Lonely Planet book. Another or an added bonus. They have great photographers (Richard is one of them) and the travel guides are brilliant... so is this guide.
The book also revealed the answer to a very important question I had: It's the 24 mm lens, which gives you the most action and coverage. (Just to give you an idea: 30% of the images have been taken with a 24mm lens, another 26% was shot with a 100mm lens. I found that interesting.) A finding which influenced my desire to get one.
Happy reading.
Regards,
Max

Book Description
"My life was interrupted, I became selfish, and then I learned how to love unconditionally
all because of a little boy named Elijah."
This isn't a tale of postpartum depression, nor is it one written by a pediatrician, psychologist, or any other doctor. This is a tale from a mother's heart. A heart that wasn't ready to become a nurturer. A heart that was nowhere near having the responsibility needed to raise a child. A heart that has become molded from all the ups and downs of motherhood.
Customer Reviews:
A Beautiful Story.......2007-02-19
A compelling "From the Heart story" of how the unconditional love of a child can be life transforming for his mother in countless ways.

Could not put it down.......2006-12-04
A wonderful story about a mother having to grow up fast and finding a true love with her son.
Hooray for Nina and Elijah Duran!!! .......2006-10-01
I loved this book. Nina's story of love and redemption is powerful and inspirational. After opening the book I just couldn't put it down. I read the entire book in one sitting. I guess that is part of her genius. The pictures of Nina and Elijah are so poetic.
Unlike so many other dense books, Nina chose to inspire us by giving us just enough. She is definitely a writer on the rise. You won't be disappointed with this purchase.

Book Description
"Everyone deserves to experience that one great, all-consuming, passionate love, at least once in their lives. And every day, we could all use just a little more love, whether we're on the prowl for a brief fling, been married for decades, or something in between. And we can look to the stars to help show us the way."
Andrea Valeria, author, radio personality, and professional astrologist has found throughout her career that the questions she's asked most frequently have to do with love--how to find it, how to hang on to it once you have it, and how to get more of it. She wrote this book to help everyone find the path to a little more love, no matter what their sign, or the sign of their beloved.
"I believe each of the twelve astrological signs has their own language, history, associated myths, and legends--all of which appear the moment we are born. Since the begining of recorded history, people have looked up to the stars and found answers to life's deepest questions. I hope that A LITTLE MORE LOVE will help you understand yourself, and your partner, a little bit better, and let you get that little more love in your life that we all deserve, every day."
Customer Reviews:
Insightful, warm, and so helpful!.......2005-09-09
I had bought and loved Valeria's The Celestial Fortune Cookie, so when I saw she had a new book I snapped it up--and boy, am I glad I did. It's so insightful and warm, but better than that, it's extraordinarily helpful. It guides you into finding the love you want, whether it's with someone you are already partnered with, or someone who is still out there waiting for you. Beautifully written, sparkling with insights, this is a book I'm also buying for friends.
