5 out of 5 stars Great travel guide.......2007-10-07

I bought this exact lonely planet guide for a friend a year ago and now I need it myself, it's great! It's very practical, it allows you to be prepared, it's easy to read and it makes travel so much easier. (I'm hooked; each time I travel I get the lonely planet guide for where I'm travelling to first).

This was sent via USPS and I never received it! I urgently needed it. I would've thought that Amazon would've used a shipping company that requires a signature at least!

Just like the rest of the Lonely Planet tour guide books - it's awesome! Everything is the same in this book as the others, except it's about South Africa. So, if you liked their other tour guide books, as I do very much, you'll like this one too. Check it out!

1 out of 5 stars Disorganized and a waste of money.......2005-05-03

SUMMARY OF MY REVIEW: Save your money and get free guides at the Cape Town tourism office instead!!!

Lonely Planet guides usually rate pretty good in my view, but this guide to Cape Town has made me re-think my devotion to Lonely Planet books. The one positive thing I have to say about this book is that it is small and packs easily, and that is why I think this guide deserves even one star.

The book is a very disorganized rambling description of Cape Town and neighboring communities. The guidebook begins with a historical overview, which is appreciated, but then is divided into sections that defy logical order. One of the first sections in the book, for example, is about wineries. Why is this section near the front of the book? Shouldn't more essential Cape Town items like lodging and dining come before wineries? Some destinations, such as the wine country, have different descriptions in more than one section of the book, making this book even more frustrating to use.

Additionally, there are very detailed descriptions for things like how to buy a car in Cape Town (how many vacationers are actually going to buy a car and then resell it while on their vacation???), but descriptions of more touristy things like Table Mountain or the Kirstenbosch Gardens are lacking.

Speaking of lacking, when you're in a new city, good maps are essential. So why are the maps in this guide so lacking in detail? The free maps at the Cape Town tourist office are ten times better.

It would be a much more effective guidebook if (1) it were organized in a more logical fashion, and (2) gave readers a clearer picture of what is a "must see" versus something not so good. Frommer's has a pretty good guide to South Africa in general, but I bought this one because it was specific to Cape Town and because it was small and portable.

Bottom line is that if you go to Cape Town, avoid using this as a guide. I'm sure there are better guides out there. If not, the tourist offices in Cape Town are EXCELLENT resources.

5 out of 5 stars Deals with the city well.......2002-04-20

This book deals with a complex city in an understandable manner, and was very helpful in the planning of our trip. I would recommend it, though get the latest edition

3 out of 5 stars Well written, but out of date already.......1999-07-07

This guide covers many things that a tourist would like to know. But a year old is too old for fast-changing South Africa.

It is nice to see Lonely Planet adding web pages - but I wish there was an index somewhere rather than having to search through the book looking for them once I'm at the computer!

1 out of 5 stars This book is incorrect, poorly written, unreliable.......1999-06-26

This thick book is worth its weight in water if you're planning to venture to Africa's southern region ... as 30 percent of all visitors to Africa do. Whether you want to hike through South Africa's stunning Drakensberg Mountains or the rolling hills of Malawi, admire Namibia's vast red sand dunes, dive on Mozambique's pristine tropical reefs, experience the majesty of Victoria Falls, or just wander the streets of Cape Town, Africa the South can take you there. More than 170 maps help you navigate your adventure around Botswana, Lesotho, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, South Africa, Swaziland, Zambia, and Zimbabwe. The book offers extensive coverage of world-renowned wildlife reserves, comprehensive food, lodging and activity recommendations, a language section, and an illustrated guide to the region's birds and animals--including lifesaving tips on how to avoid undesirable encounters with wild animals:

"Lion, though rarely interested in humans, have been known to attack on occasion. If you're camping out in the bush, be sure to zip your tent up completely and if you hear a large animal outside, lie still even if it brushes against the tent. Lions don't really know what to make of tents and normally leave them alone. If you encounter a lion while walking in the bush, try to avoid an adrenaline rush; whatever you do, don't turn and run. If you respond like a prey species, the lion could react accordingly."

4 out of 5 stars Lonely Planet Africa: The South: Travel Survival Kit.......2000-05-03

A must-have if traveling through one of the most exotic parts of the world. Our family's journey took up the Matubu River in Bostwana and back across the wild plains of the Jelowi Game reserve in South Africa. There wasn't a day which went by, where my dear daughters did not consult the guide for local cultural tidbits and useful, if not a bit tiny, georgraphical maps. Other than a few dated portions, namely the prices and hostel locations, we highly recommend this book to first time travellers and returnees. Wonderful pictures, if not small again, and consice descriptions of the natural history. Once again, well done Lonely Planet!

    3 out of 5 stars They're getting there..........2002-01-23

I used the 3rd edition of this guide on my first trip to South Africa in 1999. Back then, this guide would recommend places to stay in the most dangerous streets of Jo'burg, and guarantee the readers that the area was even safe to walk around at night. A taxi driver in Jo'burg told us he was appalled at their reccommendations on where to stay and where to go out, saying they were simply too dangerous, especially for white backpackers. The guide also had an aggressive attitude towards any predominantly white bars or clubs dismissing them as "artificial"... as if the only option was to go out in Shebeens.

Racial issues apart, they seem to be reversing this trend, and have been doing constant progress. This edition recommends mostly well-located places and acknowledges that some areas are just too dangerous to stay in. Otherwise neglected entertainment areas are being put into this guide too.

But the issue is that this guide is mostly useful in planning your trip, by telling how to get from one city to another, and what are the costs like, etc. It is also more useful in smaller towns than the larger ones. The fact is that there isn't a 100% reliable guide to South Africa, but this update is about as good as it can get.

          Book Description

Have you ever felt like you were the only one in the crowd who didn’t get the joke? The joke was told with great delivery...but the punch line just flew over your head? The Christian life can be a lot like that. We’re told that God has a great sense of humor, but sometimes His irony leaves us gasping instead of giggling. In his new book, I Love God’s Sense of Humor; I Just Wish He’d Let Me in on the Joke , Stan Toler addresses the awkward moments of life and the silence that fills the air after trouble or tragedy has occurred. With humor and insight, Toler revisits the lives of biblical heroes who struggled to find the humor in horrifying situations yet found the courage and faith to overcome the obstacles in their lives. He helps you learn to deal with some of life’s most pressing problems--while still managing to keep a smile on your face. I Love God’s Sense of Humor ...will remind you that you don’t necessarily need a great sense of humor to get God’s punch lines. You just need a great sense of faith--the ability to see that God will get you to Jerusalem even if you have to go through Cleveland to get there. In I Love God’s Sense of Humor ...you’ll learn to overcome: Obstacles Disappointment Temptation Anger Fear Inadequacy Doubt Hopelessness Failure Loneliness

2 out of 5 stars A Book for the Religious Reader.......2000-06-17

"My Wish List" is a book for those of us who prefer to stick to a religious bases when reading. If you like a book with good character development and an interesting plot, this book is definatly not for you. I would say this is more of a Christian religion book that you would find in a school, rather than a modern-day masterpiece. It mostly explores the ideas expressed in the Catechism and how to lead a more filling life in the path of Christ.

            Book Description

When Anne-Marie first meets Brother Jackson at tabernacle, she feels the change come over her instantly. She's tired of being labeled an underachiever, of bad grades that won't let her graduate from high school on time, of fooling around with creepy Richard Boe. With the preacher's guidance, she can throw off the old Anne-Marie and redeem herself. And life does change fast for Anne-Marie once she finds herself pregnant with Brother Jackson's child, then transported three hundred miles to Camp Shaddai for "spiritual redemption." Isolated from home, she empties herself of everything she's ever cherished--her family and freinds, her body, even her name. Sister Ruth-Anne is a whole new person now, ready to surrender.

4 out of 5 stars Good start, Bad ending.......2004-03-31

I had to read this book for an english report. I thought that the plot of the book was good. The characters seemed realistic to me but then again I dont know many teenagers that would be attracted to a man like Brother Jackson. I was excited to be done with the book thinking that everything would turn our great for Anne-Marie, but I was wrong. After I read the last sentance of the book, I was very disappointed. The ending wasn't anything I had expected it to be. In my opinion, it would be a 5 star book if the ending didnt turn out the way that it did!

            2 out of 5 stars Not good.......2004-02-09

If I hadn't promised to review this book for our school library, I would have stopped reading after the first chapter. This book is not well written, nor are the characters or subplots believable. I can't think of a single student I have ever had who I would recommend this book to. Very disappointing.

4 out of 5 stars They didn't live happily every after.......2004-01-08

Faith Wish is a great book that mature teenaged girls can relate to. AnneMarie, a beautiful, 17-year-old underachiever, has been put on an academic contract and will not graduate with her high-school class - to her dismay. When she attends a tabernacle meeting led by Brother Jackson, a charismatic, handsome self-proclaimed minister, she becomes a true Christian. After discovering she is pregnant with Brother Jackson's child, she turns to him for help, and he takes her to a spiritual redemption camp to find guidance. There, she sheds her old skin and past sins, including sex, drugs, and smoking. Unfortunately, all does not end well, as she struggles to find answers to her dilemna.

5 out of 5 stars Great positive message.......2007-01-07

Through the power of her faith and refusing to let go of her dream, De'asha gets her wish for snow. This teaches children that; even if something seems impossible, if your faith and belief is strong enough and you want something bad enough, you can make anything happen. What a wonderful lesson for children to learn. The beautiful artwork and colors pull you into the story and make you feel as if you are right there with the people of the village. I would definately recommend this story for anybody with small children.

            5 out of 5 stars FANTASTIC!.......2005-05-05

I read the book and thoroughly enjoyed it myself. Then before getting around to reading it to my 11-year old daughter, she read it herself and told me twice later in the day that she really liked the book. I plan to order one for each of our two kids so that they can have one themselves, and also one for the nieces and the nephews too. Not only was it well-written with a wonderful message to kids, but the illustrations were great too.
